The Unyielding Will

Naruto lays still in the dark. Every breath they take tires them, yet each breath was shallower than the last. They cannot hear their heart anymore, but it must still be beating if they are alive. Perhaps they had already gone deaf?

They blink. Did they blink? Or did they take a nap? They can no longer tell. Memories, regrets, and moments of joy flash before their mind's eye, a montage of a life lived to its fullest. Naruto fought and fought, and they loved and loved, despite the hurt and the loss.

They should be content. Or maybe not? Why are they dying again? Are they old? Did they lose a fight? Is anyone in danger? Their thoughts are too fuzzy. They are not even sure if this is real or a dream.

They laugh a burst of silent laughter, despite how it feels like a fire-style technique is being lit in their core. They refuse to die.

That was it.

Nothing grand. Nothing heroic.

They just refuse.

Naruto refuses to accept defeat and refuses to bow down to the darkness. They have faced death before, and today will be no different. They welcome the burning pain in their belly, sides, and chest. What burns them is now their fire. The pain is not a hindrance but an anchor.

Every fibre of their being fights against the darkness edging into their vision. And at that moment, they find it. Their last drop of chakra.

Despite how unwise it is, they channel nature energy. If they weren't dying before, this would be their doom. They don't have enough chakra to counterbalance the nature energy entering their system. Already, they are turning to stone.

But it is of little concern. A moment is all they need.

It is an old thought. It is a thought they have never pursued before because it is simply ridiculous. Chakra is a lever. A tool to exercise their will in the world.

Nature energy is the world's tool. It turns people into stone because it is imposing nature's will, or the closest equivalent to it, on the person gathering it. Sage Mode is so potent because nature energy is a really long lever. It is a force amplifier. But as the sage uses this lever against their enemy, nature uses this lever against the sage. Chakra is a balancing force.

Or maybe they should just accept that they are crap at chakra theory. They're sure the experts would laugh at their conjecture.

But it is this errant thought that they use to claw themselves out of the pit of death.

Right now, he has a tiny lever. It probably doesn't amplify anything. They are trying to lift a mountain with a lever the length of a toothpick.

But it is irrelevant. Because they'll win anyway. Their tool is small, but they are strong enough that it's irrelevant.

Nature is a kage wearing the latest and greatest ninja gear. Naruto is facing it completely naked with only a bent senbon as a weapon. They'll still win. The gap is just that large. Beyond all other advantages, which Naruto no longer has at the moment, they still have the most important one. Their will.

And so Naruto's force of will slams against that lever and shoots that mountain into the sky.

Overkill.

Beyond overkill.

Instead of simply staying alive, Naruto's soul pierces through the fabric of reality.

Naruto, through sheer force of will, lives. But in this world, all that is left is a stone statue.
