It's Roman who brings them back together, after three whole months. Kendall gets a call from his younger brother late one night, sobbing like he did at the funeral. "Ken, I need you."

"What's happened? Rome?"

"I need you to come over, right now. I'm at home. I think I might do something—"

"Rome. Slow down. Do you need an ambulance?"

"No. No ambulance. Just come, please?"

"Okay. Okay. I'm on my way."

When he arrives at Roman's apartment, the door is unlocked. He finds his brother sitting on the couch, looking surprisingly fine.

"Good, one's here."

"What's going on?" Kendall takes a step toward him. The door is still open behind him and when he turns around Shiv is standing there, her phone in her hand, looking huge compared to the last time they met.

"Oh, I don't fucking believe it," she says, glaring at Roman.

"Well, I'm going out now," Roman says cheerfully, jumping to his feet. "Enjoy my non-suicide, guys." He kisses both of them on the cheek and skips out the door, closing it behind him.

They look at each other, then Shiv turns to leave. "I can't believe I fell for that."

"Wait," says Kendall. "We should probably talk."

Shiv shuffles over to the couch and sits. He sits on the other couch, as far away from her as possible.

"You look… big," he says finally.

"Thanks," she says. "It's a girl, by the way."

Kendall smiles bitterly. "Still no grandson for Dad then, huh?"

"Come on, Dad loved Iverson. You know that."

More silence.

"I tried to jump, you know," Kendall says abruptly. "I went to the river and I tried to jump. Colin stopped me."

"Did you know he was there?"

"Yeah. Maybe it was a half-assed attempt at suicide."

"Yeah, that's pretty pathetic, Ken."

He smiles despite himself.

"Do you think," she asks, "we can ever go back to how we were before?"

"Probably not." He shakes his head. "But maybe that's a good thing."

She holds out a hand and he takes it.

"You know, Roman's gonna be really annoying if he finds out this phony suicide thing worked."

"Yeah. We should keep up appearances."

"I still really hate you."

"I still really hate you too."

They sit like that, holding hands and not looking at the other, until Kendall says conversationally, "You know, Kendall can be a girl's name too."
