Jaune handed Nora an apple beneath the table as Professor Port went on how he had once hunted down a pack of Beowolves. The girl squealed in glee before grabbing the fruit. Jaune had offered Ren and Pyrrha the same thing but both had refused.
First day of class and already Jaune had already screwed up as a leader. If he had been more mindful of them time, they'd all be able to have breakfast before class.
Granted they weren't the only team who skipped breakfast ( Blake reached a hand over Nora, motioning for him to give her an apple and Yang shot him a pleading look) but it was not an excuse.
To reprimand for this, Jaune forced himself to pay attention to the lecture. Lucky for him, Professor Port has chosen to present his experience as a story. Jaune loved stories, Billy taught him loads of stuff as stories. He just needs to find the moral of Professor Port's.
He got some good notes in before class ended on the Boarbatusk hunting pattern. And some extra ones watching Weiss fight as demonstration. While it was public knowledge, not many people knew of the Schnee's family semblance of Glyphs. Billy, in some past research, did find some description of it in history books.
They were one of the prominent families fighting for Atlas in the Great War, known for having one of the most versatile semblance, especially when paired with dust. Although near the end of the war, due to lack of supply the Schnee turned to the mining business. Then Atlas lost and the Schnee most of their money.
" I used to think that the Schnee semblance was another form of magic." Billy said, and Jaune could feel him studying Weiss' movement. " I had never seen a semblance with such a wide range of abilities. Summoning, boosting one's speed, controlling the elements."
"But?" Jaune whispered, had he written down some ideas for spells.
"I figured out that magic was independent from aura, but Glyphs clearly utilize aura so it can not be magic."
Weiss stormed out of the class room after she slayed the Boarbatusk. Jaune shuddered at the temper. Good thing he didn't have her for a partner.
Lunch couldn't come fast enough. After two class periods and several apples eaten, team JNPR was ready to get some actual food in their stomach. Not before picking up Ruby from the chicken den to have lunch with them.
Although it was very much like Blake to seek out solitude, Jaune could see why Weiss would not want to hang out with Ruby after their earlier class. He wasn't sure why Yang wasn't here, had it been his sisters Jaune would probably spend the first day of lunch with at least one of them.
The point was Ruby was moping and Nora was trying to cheer her up by doing some kind of Mistralian dance by shoving chopstick up her nose. As Ren wrestled the chopsticks out of Nora's hands, Jaune tried to distract Ruby.
"So what do you have for electives this semester Ruby?"
The girl stopped poking her gnocchi. " General Hunters Regulations and Advance Weaponry."
" Cool, I got Hunters Regulations this semester too." Jaune double checked his class schedule on his scroll. " Do you have it in the fourth period?"
" Yep, Professor Humbert ?" Jaune nodded and Ruby brightened. " Alright, I won't be alone in that class!"
" Blake's in that class too, you know." Jaune informed her. "It would be a good time for you two to get to know each other. Blake's a bit antisocial but she's nice."
"Excuse me for interrupting. But isn't General Hunters Regulations a remedy class?" Pyrrha hesitantly pointed out. " Does that mean…"
"That I never went to a combat school? Yes." Jaune finished for her. " I'm self trained, couldn't afford to go to a combat school."
Ren, who was still trying to stop Nora, only nodded. "It's understandable, I've heard that combat school in Vale is much more expensive than Mistral."
The other boy wasn't wrong, Mistralian culture favored strength, with fighting championships being a common sport, so the kingdom had much more combat schools than the others. Which was probably the reason why tuition was cheaper ( Billy doubted it would be that much cheaper than Vale).
" Not that we know, of course." Nora pouted when Ren finally took away her chopsticks. "Ren and I got in by scholarship."
Jaune eyes went wide. He didn't know much about scholarship in Mistral, but in Vale scholarship students are rare and students maintain their scholarship's status for four years of combat school even rarer.
Ruby's jaw dropped open. "Really?"
" Oh yeah, you're looking at Luminar's valedictorian and one of its best fighters." Nora wiggled her eyebrows as she pointed between herself and Ren.
"Now I'm nervous for combat class."
" Aww, don't worry Jaune. You're my friend now, I'm not gonna break your legs."
" Thank you?"
"What about you, Ruby?" Pyrrha turned to the said girl."I thought you went to Signal ?"
" Ummhmm, I skipped a few years though so I have to take some remedial classes." Rubby admitted.
" You skipped?" Jaune asked. "That's awesome."
"I guess," Ruby's shoulders droop. "But apparently skipping three years of combat school means I'm behind on school work. So much school work."
"Perhaps you and Jaune could study together?" Ren suggested.
Jaune nodded."Yeah, a few of the core subjects are taught in public school so I can help you with those and since we're both behind on the hunters stuff we could help each other."
Ruby seemed to be a bit cheered up by the suggestion. " Really? You want to study with me?"
"I mean, us leaders gotta stick together, right? Sides we're friends aren't w-" Jaune cut his speech short when he noticed Nora had got her hands on another pair of chopsticks.
"Nora, no!"
