Chapter 7
At 9AM sharp Jane knocked on Maura's door.
Maura opened it, and she was wearing a sunny summer dress and comfortable wedgie sandals.
"You look lovely…" Jane offered, kissing her lightly on the lips.
"Good morning to you too…" Maura replied in a smile.
Jane had opted for capris, t-shirt and sensible sneakers. She had an insulated backpack on her back.
Hand in hand, they moved to Jane's car.
Jane drove them to the crossing for the Hains Point Loop Trail, where she had in the previous evening reserved an electric bike online. Jane was taking advantage of the breathtaking cherry trees blossom season.
She had anticipated Maura would opt to wear a dress, so she had made a point of reserving a model with a comfortable backseat.
She stored the insulated backpack on its compartment of the e-bike, before helping Maura to get comfortable and getting comfortable herself. Maura sneaked her hands around Jane's waist, and Jane drove them around the trail, stopping to explain to Maura the different cherry trees and their history around this place – there were seven different types of cherry trees only on that trail – plus a few other types of trees.
Jane had done that trail when she had moved to DC, and Maura appreciated how thoughtful Jane had been in making sure she had all the information to share on everything they were stopping to see. They would stop, walk around the trees, take pictures, before continuing.
They finished the loop around lunch time, and so they sat by one group of trees to have a delicious picnic with the perfect view of the Potomac River.
Jane retrieved cheese and fruits and sandwiches from the insulated container, as well as a light wine that had been kept chilled, and water. They ate and drank calmly, enjoying each other's company, and enjoying the view. Maura laid her head on Jane's thigh, while Jane fed her grapes and lost her hands on amber tresses, and Maura pointed to the cloud shapes in the sky, and the guessing game of shapes and forms make both laugh lightly.
Then, they returned the e-bike and boarded a small boat that Jane had booked for them. It was an open-bow boat, and the views from the city and from the river were stunning. The captain was also the guide, who was used to being discreet whenever he had couples onboard. And this was a very romantic couple. Maura was by Jane's side, Jane's arm around her shoulders, and they were enjoying the scenery, the view and each other's company. They kissed and touched often, but they were playful, and happy, and relaxed.
It was almost 3.30PM when the cruise finished and dropped them back for Jane to drive them back home.
Maura was super excited about all they had seen and the fabulous pictures they had taken of the landscapes and their selfies, as well as a few the boat captain had snapped of them with their phones.
When they arrived at their apartments, Jane kissed Maura lightly on the lips.
"I will pick you up at 7PM. I know it goes without saying to you, but dress nicely…" Jane teased.
Maura raised her eyebrows in surprise and opened her mouth to speak or ask a question, but Jane kissed her before she could speak.
"Don't ask, it is a surprise. See you in a few…" Jane said before dodging Maura and entering her own apartment.
When Jane ringed Maura's bell precisely at 7PM, she was not prepared to the view in front of her. It was Dr. Maura Isles in all of her dressed up glory. Jane had not seen her dressed like that since before the shooting, since the dress code in the agency was very low key and Maura tried to keep to a style much simpler than the one in Boston, her new persona. But tonight, she was back in full bloom.
"You are breathtaking." Jane offered, after having to clear her throat twice, her mouth suddenly dry seeing the stunning woman in front of her.
"And you look gorgeous…" Maura offered, kissing Jane on the lips and boldly running her hand from the side of Jane's breast to her hips, satisfied with Jane's choice of dress and heels and accessories.
Jane took Maura's hand, and they walked to the car. Jane drove them to the restaurant, and Maura looked at her, impressed by the unusual choice.
"What? You told me weeks ago you wanted to come here…" Jane blushed.
"I did, but I didn't know you were paying attention…"
"I always pay attention…" Jane kissed her lightly on the lips, before leaving the car to open Maura's door and offer her hand.
Dinner was fabulous, food and wine pairing perfectly, the restaurant was deserving of its Michelin classification.
"Oh, Jane, this was incredible… Thank you for bringing me here…" Maura was so happy as she was sipping her wine after their shared desert.
"I am glad you enjoyed it." Jane smiled back.
"Enjoy it? I loved it… You were not exaggerating when you told me this would be the best date of my life..."
Jane gave her a smug smile, placing a hand on top of Maura's thigh for emphasis. "Oh, and the date is far from over…" Jane whispered on the shell of Maura's ear, before Jane leaned over to kiss Maura lightly on the lips, a lingering kiss with the promise of so much more to come.
And she felt Maura shiver with anticipation under her touch.
"Shall we go?" Jane stood, offering her hand, after she paid for their check.
Maura just smiled and nodded, hooking her arm with Jane's before walking with her back to the car.
Jane drove to the Mall, where she had arranged for a horse-drawn carriage to take them through the monuments at night. DC was a completely different city at night.
"This is lovely…" Maura was mesmerized by the view, cuddled by Jane's side in the cushioned benches.
"It is not as beautiful as the harbor views, but it is a close second…" Jane admitted, knowing how much Maura enjoyed the Boston harbor views at night.
"It is perfect…" Maura whispered before kissing Jane longingly.
After they completed the circuit around all the monuments, they returned to the car to drive back to their building.
