A/N: Happy Sweet 16 Miku! I had an old OTP writing prompt sitting in my drafts that I wanted to post on Miku's anniversary last year but I just kind of forgot about it. But I didn't want to miss Miku's sweet 16 so I HAD to post something today! With major health issues that left me hospitalized over the summer, I've really fallen out of my writing funk. I am challenging myself to do one writing prompt a week here to get my writing mojo back. Not all prompts will be ship-related, I'll just pick whatever speaks to me. For now please enjoy this little drabble of mine!
For most people, your birthday would be a day to relax and take some time for yourself. Not for Hatsune Miku. She somehow became even busier on her birthday.
While her girlfriend, Luka, usually was busy on this day, she found some time off and decided to surprise Miku.
The plan seemed perfect on paper. Luka would wake up early, use the key Miku gave her to get into her apartment, and hide in her closet. While this might sound creepy to some, Miku had done something similar once, hiding behind Luka's shower for their anniversary. While Luka wasn't one for surprises Miku had enjoyed them. Even if she was told a surprise beforehand Miku would play into it anyway. So Luka wanted to surprise Miku as she got changed that morning before going to work.
But Miku didn't come to her closet to get changed.
"Wake up!" The Kagamines burst into Miku's room to wake her up. Miku groggily sat up in bed and rubbed her eyes to see the two blondes in front of her.
"You guys are more effective than an alarm clock," Miku said, slinking out of bed. Luka didn't know how to feel about popping out of the closet in front of Miku's roommates, Rin and Len, but Miku would come soon so she'd have to prepare herself! Or so Luka thought.
"We wanted to give you your present as soon as possible!" Rin said, ripping a teal present bag out of Len's hands.
"Thank you!" Miku said with a gracious smile as she took the bag. "A new dress~" she cooed.
"We thought you could wear it to work with us today," Len said. Oh no.
"I picked it out!" Rin said as Miku ran her fingers over the silky smooth, black and white dress.
"She could probably tell. Black and White are your colors Rin," Len retorted back.
"So? It'll help her long teal hair stand out today! Wearing blue and green all the time totally washes you out~" Rin explained herself. She never really held back.
"Alright I'll get changed then," Miku said, grabbing the dress.
This is bad! If Miku is wearing a new dress then she might not come to her closet. Come on! Don't you need socks or underwear? Luka thought. However, those things could be found in a dresser and before Luka knew it Miku had walked out of the room.
Shit.
Luka couldn't come out now and surprise her now. Barreling out of Miku's room might be taken out of context by the Kagamines if they saw her first. Miku might not open the closet door today but she must come back in before she goes to work! Luka decided to crawl under the bed to wait for Miku to come in.
She waited...and waited… and waited until she heard the sound of a car peeling out of the driveway. Everything went silent. They all went to work.
Luka dejectedly went back to the closet. Miku always came home for lunch. Luka would wait until then. Noon came and went. Nobody came. Miku gets off at 3. A mix of Luka's anxiety and stubbornness was keeping her in the closet. 3 o'clock came and Luka could hear someone returning. She could hear Rin and Len chatting, but not Miku.
4 o'clock, 5 o'clock, 6 o'clock... The time ticked on by. Finally, at around 7 pm, Luka heard Miku come in. She could faintly hear Miku in the kitchen talking to Rin and Len
"I'm seriously worried-"
"She's probably fine-"
"-Won't answer me!"
Eventually, Miku returned to her room. Yes! Now open the closet door! As Luka peaked through the crack in the door she could see Miku's eyes were red. Had she been crying? She looked exhausted.
Miku flopped on her bed, picked up her phone and began to dial... Bringggg…. Bringggggg…. Bringggggggg…
"No answer," Miku sighed as she sat up and rubbed some new tears away from her eyes. She then began to dial a new number, this one picked up.
"Hello?" Miku always kept her phone volume so loud that even from here Luka could hear it was Gumi's voice on the other end.
"Have you heard from Luka today?" Miku asked. Huh? Luka tilted her head to the side.
When Miku let out a worried sigh and hung up Luka realized that Gumi hadn't heard from Luka all day. Luka had her phone off all day because she didn't want to ruin her surprise. But now Luka realized she was an idiot for ghosting her girlfriend all day.
She slowly opened the closet door, Miku hadn't noticed at first since she lay on her bed facing the ceiling, but when the door made a little creek Miku shot up, she was more shocked than surprised. For a fleeting moment, Miku was terrified but she soon recognized the woman standing awkwardly in front of her.
"Luka?"
"Yeah?"
"Were you in my closet?"
"Yeah…"
"For how long?"
"...Since this morning."
Miku just blinked in response. Soon giggles slipped out of her lips, and those giggles turned into bellyaching laughs alongside tears or relief.
"Luka you are too much for me! I was so worried!" Miku said in between breathless laughter. "Were you trying to surprise me?"
"Yeah… but I did a pretty lousy job…" Luka lamented as she took a seat next to Miku on her bed.
Once Miku had finished laughing she took a few breaths and then pulled the mopey Luka into her embrace. At first, Miku had planted a soft kiss on Luka's lips but soon she leaned in again making the kiss deeper. After a few minutes of snogging Miku pulled back. "Why don't you leave the surprises to me? Ok, babe?"
"Okay," Luka said with a soft smile. "Anything I can do to make it up to you?"
"Let's get dinner and drinks on your tab! I really burned an appetite worrying about you," Miku said with a wink as she got up and walked to her door. Luka smiled along, not thinking of the damage the idol would do to her wallet. She was just happy to be with her after such a long day.
