Chapter 22Chloe's POV
When that elevator door closes, I have to fight my urge to go after her. I have such a bad feeling about this. Maybe it's because I'm in the last place I ever thought that I would be. The place that hunts my kind. Filled with people that find the littlest excuses to arrest and kill us. It takes everything I have not to run after her but I made a promise, one that I intend to keep. Taking a deep breath, I focus on my surroundings and hoping that no one will show up.
Of course the quiet only lasts for a little while before a car comes screeching into the parking lot. Gasping, I duck down in my seat as it parks right next to Beca's car. Hopefully the tinted windows conceal my presence. The person gets out of their car and I hear a muffled curse that's followed by someone hitting the car. They storm inside and I can finally breathe. My relief doesn't last long before my phone goes off, making my blood run cold.
A text from Darren states that Beca took pictures of the files and sent them to him. That part doesn't scare me. It's the text that says that Beca told him she was sending more but never did. Not wasting a second, I get out of the car. To hell with that promise. I don't make it more than a few steps before the sound of footsteps and pressing of cool metal against my head makes my blood run cold.
"If you want her to live, you'll do exactly as I say," the person snarls and I nod, knowing that they mean Beca. "Now, we're going to walk into the elevator nice and easy. No funny tricks, you hear?"
"No funny tricks," I spit, trying to resist whipping around and clocking the dude. We go into the elevator, the gun remaining pressed to the back of my head. When the doors open, I'm met with a crowd all glaring at me. It's a bunch of kids and a few adults here and there. As they meet my eyes, the hatred in theirs flares and I worry they'll attack. I'm fast but with the gun so close to my head, I wouldn't be fast enough. I'm led through the bright room covered in mats and equipment to an office upstairs. The moment we walk through the door, I instantly know whose office when I see the half man-half wolf head mounted on the wall. My stomach churns at the sight of it and I can't help but wonder if there's one of a vampire somewhere.
"You must be Chloe Beale?" Reed says from behind the desk, startling me. I hadn't noticed he was there since I was so focused on the mounted head. The gun is no longer against my head but I can see that the person is still behind me, waiting for an excuse to use it.
"I am. Can I ask why I was escorted up here by gunpoint?"
"Don't play dumb. You know very well why."
I cock my head to the side, not wanting him to think he intimidates me. "Umm I don't think so. I came here with Beca, who as far as I know belongs here."
"That girl doesn't belong here," Reed roars, slamming his fists against the table. "She never has. She's an abomination that I will take care of once and for all."
My heart drops at his words and I guess it shows on my face because he starts laughing. "What did you do to her?"
"Nothing yet. I had to acquire you first to do anything. That girl has put me through hell her whole life and I intend to make her suffer for it. I'll be using you to do that and usually I would feel bad for making someone else suffer but luckily for me, you're just a blood sucker. Win- win situation if I do say so myself."
"You're crazy," I yell and suddenly someone grabs my arms.
"Maybe but that just makes it easier for me to do it." Laughing, Reed walks to the door and I'm jerked roughly until I follow him. "You guys thought you were so slick. I knew the moment Beca was here. Now, I didn't realize what she was doing until the guards caught her. Not sure what all was sent out to your people but that doesn't matter now. Everything is moving along just the way it's supposed to."
"What is your plan? Why are you doing this?" We reach a room where Reed pauses and looks at me.
"You all are freaks. Humans were here first and somewhere along the way, you creatures came along. It's not natural to live as long as your kind does. Tell me, how old are you?"
"Don't you know never to ask a woman's age?" Instead of the anger that I expect from him, Reed laughs.
"I see why she likes you now, not that I care much. Let's see how spunky you two are after this." With that, Reed opens to the door where Beca lays strapped to a table. It's inclined to where she looks like she's sitting up. I instantly study her for injuries and get pissed when I see several cuts and bruises on her face. My gaze meets hers and my knees almost buckle when I see pain fill them. Her jaw is clenched like she's gritting her teeth and I can practically hear her teeth grind when she notices they have me.
"Beca, look who I found." Reed taunts and gestures to the person who has a death grip on my arms. He shoves me forward and into a chair that's across from Beca. Before I can act, my arms and legs are strapped down, leaving me helpless even with my strength.
"You girls thought you were being sneaky with your relationship but you forget, I have eyes everywhere. Now, the main reason I'm not killing both of you right now is because I have some questions. I want to know who exactly you sent those files to, Beca."
"Fuck you," Beca growls and I smile proudly.
"Thought you would say that. Doctor?" My head whips towards the man that enters the room, a grim smile on his face. He obviously doesn't want to be here but is too afraid of Reed to do anything about it.
"Beca, I'm going to let you in on a little secret," Reed starts as the doctor fills a syringe up with something. "Those doctor visits I was always so careful to make sure you attended wasn't me being caring. You're not only part vampire but part wolf. We weren't sure how that would affect you because there's no one like you. So to be safe, I had the doctor here inject you with wolfsbane every time it looked like you were showing symptoms of shifting. Based on the pained look on your face, it's about time for another dose."
You bastard," Beca shouts but is helpless as the doctor injects the wolfsbane into her arm. Instantly Beca's body droops as if she's suddenly weak. I can't help but yell her name which makes her look at me. Pain still glitters in her eyes but her face only looks tired now.
"Your turn, Miss Beale," Reed turns his attention to me as the doctor gets something else. "It's funny actually. As much as I despise your kind, I'm thankful for the help I've been given by them."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means that you've been betrayed. I got into contact with some pretty brutal vampires that have the same goal in mind. One superior race. Unfortunately for them, I plan on killing them after I get what I want. They should be meeting me today, since the plan is in motion. Once we test this out on you and confirm it works, we'll use it to immobilize them. Want to explain what you're going to do, doctor?"
"Sure," the doctor takes a deep breath, obviously nervous. "This is a formula I created designed to put a vampire in a constant state of pain. It's a mix of different types of silvers completed with holy water."
"You think that's going to work?" I smirk but I already know it's going to. In my crusade of trying to kill myself, I stayed away from certain things knowing they would kill me since deep down I didn't truly wish to die. Silver and holy water was in the mix though somewhere along the line, I came across holy water. At one point, I ended up in a village full of people who suspected of the supernatural before we were known. They instantly suspected me and attempted to burn my cottage down. When I made my way out of the burning cottage, people stood there waiting for me. Things were thrown at me the entire time I ran, not as fast as usual due to being disoriented. Someone had holy water and managed to get some on me. It burned my back and took a long time to heal. For a while, I had a small scar that eventually faded.
"Don't do this," Beca pleads but I shush her.
"They're not worth it. Don't give them what they want; a reaction. I love you."
"I love you too." I can hear Beca's heart pounding fast and only accelerates when the doctor gets closer to me.
"Shut the fuck up. I don't want to hear the mushy stuff."
Beca glares at Reed and I can hear a low inhuman growl that makes me frown. "You just don't want to deal with your conscience telling you that we're people, just like everyone else."
"Doctor," Reed demands, never taking his eyes off of me. Even as the doctor slides the cold needle into my arm and presses the syringe down. The moment it hits my blood stream, pain explodes everywhere, getting worse with every passing second. My hands grip the side of the chair as I fight against giving them the pleasure of seeing me in any pain. Eventually, once it shows no sign of stopping, I can't fight it anymore. Throwing my head back, I scream.
