Disclaimer: I don't own anything Transformers or Twilight, all I own is Katherine, students that were hurt/died in the attack, and the plot.
Christmas miracle?
I was helping Ratchet in med bay the next day because he wanted to teach me some more about Autobots as well as teach Carlisle some stuff. A banging sounded outside of med bay and all three of us looked to the doors when we heard voices get closer. My eyes widened at Ironhide shoving Sideswipe in with Sunstreaker slowly walking in on his own, "What is the meaning of this?"
The black mech grinned and I recognized the victorious gleam, "He lost against me. Patch him up, doc!"
Ironhide quickly turned tail and basically ran from med bay, which had Ratchet and I chuckling. Looking between the twins, Ratchet sighed, "Fine, Katherine can take one of you because Sunstreaker avoided his check-up."
The red twi immediately tried to claim me since I was usually nicer than Ratchet, but the CMO had other ideas, "Your brother can go with Katherine. I can use you to teach Carlisle better than the check-up your brother requires."
Sunstreaker snarled, "I am not letting a squishy touch me."
Sideswipe had previously warned me before about his brother's disgust for getting any smudges, so I wasn't offended at him and merely rolled my eyes, "I'll be careful, Sunstreaker. I'll even wear gloves and personally buff any smudges out if I happen to put one there. Now quit complaining and go get on the berth."
His engines roared at me, trying to frighten or intimidate me as he towered over me with a glower. I rested my hands on my hips and I glared right back. I had stared down a gunman and several Cons, I wasn't going to let him scare me. He suddenly glanced at Sideswipe before relaxing marginally as he stalked to the farthest berth. The red twin must have said something over their bond to make him more cooperative. A sigh escaped me and Ratchet moved me to the berth with all of my tools. Moving to his wrist, I readied the scanner and cables, "Could you please open your data port, Sunstreaker? I know it isn't comfortable, but I'll be as fast as I can."
The yellow plating slid back almost silently and I quickly plugged the cables in, ignoring the way he tensed. It didn't take long for the results to all come back within the right parameters, so I wasted no time in unhooking the cables. Thanks to the amount of training I had from Ratchet, it was easy to notice the way Sunstreaker relaxed the second the cables weren't plugged in anymore. I also noticed a small dent on his face below his optic and I gestured towards it, "Would you be okay if I got rid of that dent for you? It's all good if you'd rather wait for Ratchet or Sideswipe."
His cerulean optics studied me carefully and I didn't dare move because I wanted to pass whatever test he was putting me through. He finally nodded after a moment of silence and a smile crossed my lips since it seemed I was earning some trust from the distant mech. My hands knew exactly what tools to grab and I put a mask on to cover my face since I didn't want to breathe this stuff in. I worked in silence with a last focus on what I was doing. Sunstreaker needed to trust me as one of his medics, so I couldn't screw this up.
I wasn't stupid. I had heard all the stories and rumors about the twins that the others had discussed or that Sides had told me. I knew Sunstreaker was extremely closed off to most Bots and now people, but I also knew he was the most loyal friend one could have if you could gain his friendship. It took me about forty minutes, which was about twenty minutes longer than I would have taken on a dent that small. But I know how crazy he is about his paint and frame, so better safe than sorry.
I released him as soon as I had finished and he immediately check in the reflective surface of a cabinet. He didn't say anything, but he did nod towards me with a warmer look than what I had gotten before. Seeing Ratchet was completely engrossed in his work and teaching the basics to Carlisle, I wandered towards the rec room. Being busy was good. Idle was a living nightmare.
Edward had found his way to my keyboard and I smirked, "It's not as fancy as your piano, but it sure works good."
He smiled at me over his shoulder without missing a beat and slid over to let me sit on the bench with him. I knew he would catch on to what I was doing, so I began the theme to Inspector Gadget on the low end of the keyboard. We flew through that as well as Through the Fire and the Flames by Dragonforce and Pirates of the Caribbean. Bella set some sheet music in front of us when we finished and I tilted my head in confusion, "DC vs Marvel? Where'd you find this?"
She shrugged, "Google."
I snorted before deciding to try it, why not? Edward joined in as well and he played perfectly, which wasn't a surprise. I didn't do horrible, but it wasn't great either. Mostly because my arms were too short to reach parts of the keyboard Edward was blocking with his body. It was much too soon when I had to leave Jasper's emotional influence to go to my therapy session with Optimus. I agreed to this, but it sucked having to actually deal with these emotions. I felt like I was drowning and there was no life preserver there to save me.
Four days before Christmas, the Cons finally made a move. I had been sound asleep for once in bed and I literally fell to the floor in panic when the alarm sounded. Epps threw me some clothes and I ran to the bathroom to change, so that he could change in the room. He waited for me before we burst out of the room and I saw Bella peering out with the Cullens as Sam joined the mad dash for the command center.
I skidded to a halt below the walkway with Sam as Epps ran up two steps at a time and barked demands at the techs stationed there. All of the Bots rushed in as the Cullens and Bella arrived as well. My eyes darted to each Bot and soldier as they began getting ready to take off and go wherever the threat was. Sideswipe and Sunstreaker stayed behind with Bumblebee, Jolt, and Prowl while the rest of the Bots transformed and headed to the airplanes.
Epps paused long enough to kiss the top of my head with a quick hug before he ran off with most of the soldiers. Sam pulled me close to his side as we watched our family leave for battle, but I couldn't stop the seed of hope in my chest that they might be able to rescue my dad. Sam and I silently stared out the open hangar doors and we startled when Bella spoke up behind us, "They're going to fight, aren't they?"
We glanced at each other before nodding to her and I had to remind myself that this was all new to her. It was one thing for her dad to be a cop in a town where nothing happens….well, nothing that normal people concern themselves with. She had never had to really watch someone go out the door and pray they return.
There was no word for four days. I had barely eaten or slept during that time. I was too stressed about my family out there fighting and I was running through everything Ratchet taught me. He had gone with the fighting force, but it would be down to Jolt and I if Ratchet was injured. Optimus and Ironhide had some emergency medical knowledge, but they wouldn't know what to do to fix everything. Christmas Eve finally arrived and Sunstreaker informed us that the boss bot had commed saying they were on their way with minimal injuries.
They hadn't said anything about my dad and the hopeful smile on my face instantly fell as my shoulders slumped. Guess it was too much to hope for. I left to go sit in my dad's room because I couldn't be around everyone. They were all happy and excited for Christmas, but I just couldn't. It was already going to be rough without my mom, but it was going to be absolutely impossible without my dad here. Being around everyone just reminded me how alone I really was and it sucked.
Bella and Alice eventually came to drag me out of my self-imposed exile. I had thrown on faded camo leggings with an over-sized sweater that started off as baby blue at the shoulders then was dyed darker until it was royal blue at the bottom. Alice didn't even comment on my outfit as she grabbed my arm and gently pulled me along behind her with Bella behind me, "Why're we going out here, guys? I just want to lay in bed."
My cousin was absolutely beaming as we reached the main hangar and I faintly noticed all the Bots were in there, "Each of us gets to open one present tonight! It's tradition, Kat!"
I sighed and did my best not to snap as I tried to explain, "I don't want any presents, Bella. I just want my dad back!"
"Well, I guess I'll have to return all of the presents I got you then."
My entire body stiffened like I had been electrocuted at the familiar, warm voice behind me. I slowly turned and tears instantly filled my eyes at the sight of my dad standing beside Ironhide's foot. My voice broke as I questioned, "Daddy?"
The smile and crinkle of his eyes told me that I was seeing the real thing, "Hey, angel."
I threw myself at him and he stumbled as he caught me, but he pulled me as tight as he possibly could. It hurt a little, but I didn't care. I never expected him to actually be here alive. I thought the Cons had killed him and I didn't want to accept it. But he was even keeping his promise of being here for Christmas. Tears were staining his bloody, torn shirt and I could feel drops falling on the top of my head, "I love you, sweetheart. So much and I missed you more than I could ever say. I'm so sorry I was gone. I love you, angel."
A voice cleared their throat and we separated enough to look up at Ratchet, who was looking at us sympathetically, "I know you two just reunited, but I need to examine you, Will."
My dad nodded and pressed one last kiss to the top of my head. He released me, but I tightened my grip in a panic when he started to step away. My eyes were probably as wide as saucers and I could feel my breathing start to pick up, "No. No no no no. You can't leave!"
His brown eyes studied everything about me before softening and he cradle my face between his hands, "I will be back as soon as I can. I promise, angel. Ratchet just needs to make sure I'm healthy and okay, then I'll be right back. Hang out with Hide in the meantime and you can ask for information whenever you want, okay?"
I bit my lip as I nodded and Ironhide swiftly pulled me up to sit against his spark while Ratchet gingerly carried my dad to med bay. Time ticked on eternally slow as I waited for my dad to come back out and I instantly latched onto him the second that he did. It was late at this point and we were both yawning at that point, so we called it a night. I changed in the bathroom as he changed in his room and we both crashed onto the bed.
With a gasp, I woke up and saw that I was alone in the room. Panic filled me and I checked in the bathroom to find it empty. A scream tore its way out of my throat as I threw the door open, "DAD!"
THIRD P.O.V.
Will was discussing everything that had happened on base and with his daughter since he had been captured. He had barely adjusted the sling on his left arm when a voice full of terror shrieked down the hall, "DAD!"
He yanked his handgun out of his holster and raced down the hall, fearing the Cons had gotten to his daughter, "Katherine!"
Holoforms and Epps followed close behind as the father moved faster than he should have considering his injuries. A pale girl skidded around the corner with bloodshot eyes and a mess of hair before relief flowed through her entire body at the sight of her father. She couldn't stop before colliding with him and it was only their guardian's holoform behind the man that kept Will from falling over.
Hugging her close, Will looked for danger before relaxing slightly when he realized there was nothing chasing her, "What happened, angel?"
She sniffled, "I w-w-woke and you weren't t-t-th-there. I thought i-it wasn't r-real."
Her father tightened the hug as he shared a look with the others behind him before turning his focus back to his daughter, "It wasn't a dream. I'm here. I had to disclose everything with the Bots and Epps while it was fresh. I'm so sorry for doing that to you. I love you, angel."
They bid everyone good night and went back to their room with Epps since he was tired too. Slowly, they each found their way to sleep, not knowing that three Bots stood vigil outside the door all night.
