Chapter 2: The Escape
D'Artagnan groaned as soon as the guards leave. He had made sure not to make a sound when they had given him a little greeting. And he was sure he would be sore in the morning. And he could already feel blood dripping from a head wound and from his lip.
"Aramis is going to love this", D'Artagnan mutters unhappily, as he could tell he had a concussion.
That was going to make thingsā¦interesting with things he was going to need to do. And he probably had a few bruised ribs too.
He had struggled back like he was meant too, or it would look suspicious. So now had his hands bound behind his back.
Like that made a difference for his escape.
D'Artagnan fiddles with the needle behind his back and keeps a good eye on the cell doors. But everything was quiet at the moment.
He heard the tell tale click of the lock.
He grinned.
"A new record", D'Artagnan mutters having just taken seconds to open the manacles.
He gets up and bites back a sigh of pain.
D'Artagnan goes to the cell down and starts to pick that lock too. From his upbringing he had to learn to pick locks and other shady skills. He never thought he would go back to that sort of life. But at the moment he had little choice.
Click goes the lock.
D'Artagnan tucks the needle away just to be safe and starts to carefully make his way out. He sticks to the shadows and when a guard just happened to come near, he whacks the guard and knocks him out.
"That is for giving me a concussion", he mutters looking at the same guy who had just enjoyed beating on him.
D'Artagnan searches him and takes the guards weapons. He had NO plans to use them. That would just get him into even more trouble. He just wanted to be more safe than sorry. He hoped at least Athos and Porthos would approve.
He drags the guard into an alcove and takes a few items of his clothes and leaves him there. He would just have a nasty headache when he woke.
He now ghosts through the prison and ducks away from guards. But at some places he lets the clothes he is wearing be all the disguise he needed. Red Guards were so stupid sometimes. D'Artagnan always wondered if that Cardinal just choice anyone and didn't even have the decency to train them probably. The had seen the way the Cardinal treats them and D'Artagnan believed the Cardinal was just setting them up for slaughter. Treville would NEVER do that and he made sure his men were treated well and made sure every member knew that they were always to fight together and that when another is in trouble that they should do everything in their power to help the person in trouble. So D'Artagnan knew his Brothers-in-Arms where trying to help. But they wouldn't be as motivated as his Brothers.
So, D'Artagnan didn't expect miracles to happen overnight or even within the next week or two and he was now going to have to become 'the Shadow' again that he had left behind many years again. The Shadow was going to have to go home.
D'Artagnan sees the hidden entrance that he had known about for quite some time and it just so happens seconds later shouting could be heard from somewhere down the prison.
"My money is they have realised I'm missing", D'Artagnan mutters, "Time to disappear and find out who did this to me"
With all the commotion it was comically easy for him to leave by the secret entrance while he was sure the Red Guards were heading to the only known one.
"If I see this place again it will be too soon!"
And he disappears down the secret passageway without anyone seeing him. And maybe when this mess was over, he and his brothers could laugh about him giving the Red Guards trouble.
That's if his Brothers didn't kill him that isā¦
