Lisa continued to look out the window while Jack stepped away to take a phone call. He'd offered to let it go, but she'd told him to take it. She fidgeted in her seat and with her fingers. He stepped back to the table, his swagger almost looking like a limp from sitting down. He always got stiff when sitting; she knew that from being around him for years.
"Sorry, that was just my doctor's office," he told her as he sat again. She nodded, glad she'd encouraged him to take the call. "They were just confirming my change in medication."
"Hopefully, that will help," Lisa said, turning back to him with a small, warm smile.
"Yeah," he said in his low voice. "So-"
"So, telling you about my plan to move isn't the only reason I asked you here, Jack," Lisa said, taking a deep breath. He glanced to her, titling his head now.
"Lise, I just don't see why you feel the need to go. This is your home, and well, people won't be the same in Florida," he said, now somewhat exasperated.
"Jack, we have been down all of these different pathways. We just want very different things. I know you care about me, just as I care about you, but that isn't enough," she told him. "I do need to tell you more."
"Okay," he said with a single nod. "Tell me."
Lisa shuffled some paperwork and pulled out the folder she had ready for this conversation. She glanced at him and then back down at her paperwork. She could feel Jack's eyes on her as she pulled some brochures from the folder.
"I need to talk to you about this," she said, biting her lip as she put the brochures down in front of him. He squinted briefly, and then he reached into his pocket for his reading glasses. Lisa studied him as he looked at things. "I've wanted to speak to you about this for some time."
Jack was stone-faced as he looked at the materials she'd given him. He finally glanced to her and then gestured to the paperwork, "Lise, I don't understand. What is this?" He gently smacked at the paperwork, "You want to have a baby? Is that what all this life change is? I mean, you told me it just never happened when you were younger, and you were okay with that, but now? You're 47. What is this?"
Jack looked pointedly at her, very confused, and he put the brochure back down on the table. Lisa sat forward and folded her hands on the table, pursing her lips.
"Well, Jack-" she started to say, but he was now really trying to put his thoughts into words and continued.
"I mean, I know you are much younger than I am, but aren't you getting too old to be thinking about something like this?" Jack asked her.
"No, Jack," she said, meeting his gaze. She gave a slight nod as she was trying to almost encourage herself to talk. She fidgeted with her fingers on the table and continued, "If you'd let me explain a little, I'm not too old for something like this. In fact, that's the ironic thing about all of this. We're both old, Jack, but not too old apparently. I'm pregnant-have been now for a few months, Cowboy. That's why we are here to talk."
So, I love the two of them on the show and love the life they've created. They always seem to be there for all the grandkids, great-grandkids, and their friends. I thought it would be interesting to put them in this role. Jack loves change so much :) and he also loves telling people all of his business :) I think about how long he stewed about telling the family he and Lisa had gotten married, so this seemed like a fun twist. After all it is fiction, and if it was written just like the actual show, it wouldn't be as interesting. To be continued...
