Jack sat there, mouth open, and Lisa tried to gauge his reaction. Stunned for sure, but she wasn't sure if he'd taken a breath or was in some state of shock. She somewhat expected that; she had been too, but she'd now had time to start to process it herself.

"Jack?" Lisa asked, trying to make eye contact. He appeared to be looking at her, but his eyes were glassed over. He caught his breath, and he finally let out a cough, almost like he had been holding his breath. Lisa's eyes widened, and Jack started into a coughing spit.

"Oh, let me get you some water," she said, with a voice of concern. She got up and quietly moved to her kitchen cabinet and the refrigerator to get him water, all the while watching him and his reaction. He still hadn't said a word, and he didn't seem to even be aware she was moving around the kitchen. Lisa walked back to the table and put the water down in front of him as he continued to cough. It sounded like he was choking, and she put her hand on his shoulder. That seemed to snap him out of his state.

"Jack, have some water," she told him, and with that, he snapped back into things and looked over at her.

"You're what?" Jack asked, somewhat stunned, but his voice with an edge to it. Lisa stood there next to where he was sitting at the table and pursed her lips as she nodded.

"Pregnant, Jack. I'm pregnant," she told him.

"This is, is, is unbelievable," he stated, still shocked as the color started to drain from his face. Lisa reached for the water again, noting that Jack was unaware she'd even put water there on the table, and she held it up for him and encouraged him to take it.

"Have some water, Jack. You don't look good. All of the color has drained from your face," she told him. He reached for the glass, looking at her, not blinking, but he sipped at it. She bit her lip as she watched him and when he finished the entire glass of water in one sitting, he put it down and just looked at her with a gesture of his other hand.

"Are you sure? I mean, you can't be, can you?" Jack asked, totally dumbfounded. He looked to the now empty glass. Lisa, reading his mind, picked up the glass and walked back to refill it at the refrigerator. Nothing was said as she did, and she could feel Jack watching her as she filled his glass. She returned to the table, but this time, she met his gaze and handed him the glass again, nodding for him to take it. He did and held onto it, but he didn't gulp it down as before. She folded her hands in front of her and held eye contact with him.

"I know this is a huge shock, believe me, I know," she said with a small hum. She took a breath and continued, "You know me that I'm being completely serious about this, and I was just about as shocked as you were. Granted, I was in denial for a couple of weeks, but when faced with the reality, I still am not sure how I got home that day."

"You've known? I mean, Lise, when, how?" Jack started to sputter. Lisa nodded and titled her head with a small shrug.

"This is the only time in this conversation I will mention his name, but Dan," she said, and Jack scowled. Lisa held up her hand in defense and gave him a look to let her continue. "Well, for once, you do know me, and to make sure I am not completely offended in this conversation, Dan had no part in this, and if you were going to even ask that much, you don't know me as you should." At that, Jack looked up, wide eyed, as if he couldn't believe she would suggest that. "I'm just stating that up front so that you weren't wondering and then hurt me by asking. It's only been you and me for years," she said with a shake of the head.

Lisa let Jack sit on that a second, and then, she continued, "I mention his name, though too, because yes, for years, Dan and I discussed having children. It never happened," she said with a small frown and a shrug. "I've told you that and was at peace with it. It wasn't in the cards. Now, you have also told me that after Marion, you wanted more children, and that wasn't in the cards for you as well." At that, Jack nodded with a small shrug and looked down.

"I'm just trying to grasp this, Lisa," he told her. "You're 47."

"Yes, I am," she said with a firm nod and looked to the floor for a moment. When she looked up at him, she met his gaze, "You're turning 70 soon. The age factor is not lost on me," she said and met his gaze with a small frown. "Jack, I've realized that in spite of incredible odds against us, just about every strike in the book, it did happen. We both know the how part you asked. I am pregnant, at my age, at your age, no longer a couple, and it's going to happen."

Jack, now with his color coming back, put his elbow on the table and put his head in his hand for several seconds. Lisa could hear him taking a few deep breaths, and she continued to stand there, hands folded in front of her waiting for the next round of the discussion. It felt like it was coming in waves, all the questions. She'd had them too, and she had been prepping for this, knowing it was going to be an unbelievable shock. He took one more deep breath and looked over to her, and she gave another shrug with a questioning look on her face.

"It's been months, Lise," he said quietly with a sigh.

"Yes, you're right," she told him. "One of my nice memories of us was before things between us blew up, and we had a nice, quiet evening here at Fairfield." She let that sit with Jack, and she could tell he was fondly remembering it too with a small, sad smile under that mustache of his. He looked back to her.

"Months," he repeated.

She nodded and gestured to herself, "Yes, it has. I'm just about 18 weeks or so now, which fits with four and a half months. Surprise," she said in a very low voice, not really with an exclamatory voice, but she raised her hand right in front of her in a gesture.

"I'm not sure-"

"What to think of it?" Lisa finished his thought and nodded.

He eyed her and didn't affirm or disaffirm her statement, but he nodded to her, "That's why you look so tired. I've known you a long time, Lise, and you've never looked this tired."

She cleared her voice and gave him a smirk, "Well, umm, yes, it is. I actually thought I was looking much better. It's been a rough few months, and well, it's just great to hear that I'm still looking awful."

"No, no," he said with an urgency in his voice as she stepped away and started to move back to her seat. He reached for her arm as she did and that turned her back around. She gave him a look, one of almost death, for the comment, and he gave her a sad smile. "I just meant that when I came in here, you took me by surprise. You didn't look like your bubbly self, and I suppose as this is all coming out, I can understand why. You just don't," he gestured at her and she jumped on that too.

"Pregnant?" Lisa rolled her eyes and gestured to herself again. "Jack, I'm purposely wearing this cardigan," she gestured to it, "and one of my baggy shirts," because the last thing I needed was for this conversation to get off on the wrong foot. I didn't get up when you came in for that same reason, but I assure you, I am." Lisa pushed her cardigan to just to the side and used her fingers to splay across her stomach. Jack watched, nothing it was definitely more rounded. She looked at him, and gestured again as she showed him her pants. "I even had to buy these ridiculous pants with this stretchy band. Finding anything in France was next to impossible. They seem to assume their pregnant women don't gain an ounce of weight, but for me, coupling my age with a pregnancy, well, I'm not some stick that will fit into anything."

"Umm," he said as his face turned red, and Lisa huffed as she moved to her seat and sat down again, "I, ahh, see that now," he nodded to her where she'd just shown him her growing midsection. He almost looked embarrassed now, and she was frowning as she got comfortable in her seat again.

"I know it's a shock, Jack," she said, and as she did, his phone rang again. She rolled her eyes slightly toward him, and he looked down at his phone.

"It's my doctor again, Lise, or I wouldn't even take it," he said, gesturing with the phone. She nodded and gestured back to him.

"It's fine, Jack. We have another four and a half months or so to discuss this." He scowled at her and stood to take the call. She tuned him out when he answered the phone and stepped away. Lisa turned and looked out the window again, letting out a long, deep breath. Yes, she'd been dealing with this news for some time, and it didn't make it any easier discussing it right now with Jack. She'd tried to play out this situation with him, and she really hadn't pegged the total silence. She almost expected an outburst or something more, but she seemed to have really hit him hard with this news. She looked up as he walked back into the room, holding his phone in his hand up in the air as he walked.

"Ahh, sorry about that," he said as he took his seat again. He met her gaze and gave her a sheepish look. "I suppose with all of this, you should know something too."

"What?" Lisa asked him, tilting her head.

"The reason my doctor keeps calling," he started to speak, frowned and looked down as he continued, "they aren't just changing my medications. They need me to have some additional testing, maybe a stent. Doc is worried I might have more blockage issues."

"Oh, Jack," she said, resting her head into her closed fist on the table. "That is precisely why I've struggled with when to discuss this with you. I've been so worried about your heart issues. I didn't want to cause another heart attack, even though that's about how it feels for me."

She looked up at him as she spoke, and he frowned slightly as he nodded. "So, if you are four and a half months into this, you knew then when you came back after my heart attack?"
