On My Own

Chapter 2

Author Notes: So I didn't mention it last time since the author notes last chapter was long enough but...As per my Yugioh story traditions, I title a new story with a song I like and honestly I think this specific song fits our hero to a T! But let's go with a new chapter-I do not own Yugioh.

3rd P.O.V

There are times where things sneak up on you with little warning.

'What do you mean he's missing!?' Blue eyes blinked sleepily as the now fourteen year old yawned. Quietly leaving his bed to eavesdrop. 'I'm sorry ma'am. But Isao hasn't reported in with us the last several months, and if he hasn't contacted any of you...we can only assume the worst.' Yusei's eyes widened, now fully awake.

He stayed glued to the wall, missing his aunt's expression twist to despair. But he didn't need to. 'How could this happen!? He promised this would be a quick assignment and be home in time for Yusei's birthday! What am I supposed to tell his son?' The hysterical tone that rang in her questions and the sobs filling his ears were enough.

The agent shuffled his feet slightly, offering weak condolences as Yusei's aunt cried. Her knees buckling onto the floor. 'Aunt Martha!' He had heard and seen enough. She gasped as shaky arms wrapped around her shoulders.

'I'm sorry I couldn't give you better news. Have a good night.' The now fourteen year old glared at the man who walked away. 'Kinda hard to...since you ruined it.'

It's been ten years since Yusei's father left for another mission. "Thank you so much Yusei!" And nearly nine years since his old man was reported missing while on duty. Many considered him dead at this point.

"No problem, just take it easy for now. Remember this is a temporary fix until the actual parts you need come in." It was Yusei's biggest fear when he was younger, so it was only natural that he took it pretty hard when the news hit. "Yeah yeah I will. No worries there. Have a good day."

With all the time that has gone by Yusei has practically given up all hope of him ever returning. If his father was still alive, he would've been in contact with him by now. All he could do was honor his old man and move on.

He just had to go with the flow with the life he now lives. Not that he was heartless mind you. "Later Alex." It was just as he grew older, he knew his dad had been training him for that moment. Hardening his will and body so that he wouldn't lose himself to despair.

It took awhile for him to reach that understanding though. Despite the loss of his role model and father Yusei stayed with his aunt Martha which in all honesty wasn't new or bad. And much has happened within that time.

Times were tough with finances, and he had a bit of an attitude when he reached his teenage years, but she was patient. The older woman easily kept him in line and out of trouble, supporting him with all the hardships he underwent.

Dealing with the typical assholes in the Satellite, specifically Sector Security, the so called men of the law. Cutting off ties with his high school group of friends who were getting into shit they weren't supposed to.

Taking care of Rally...all of these events shaped him for the better. She made him see what was truly important in life. She was a kind, compassionate woman to be sure, but she also had no qualms putting him or any of his friends in their place. Especially when it came to education.

'Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason so few engage in it.'

She would always mutter that quote when he struggled understanding his homework. It was so long ago. To an extent he wished he could go back, if for nothing else then to appreciate her lessons. These days he was really kicking himself for being such a pain in the ass.

'This is stupid.' Immediately he gets a swat on the shoulder from her. Martha gives a stern glare, making him sulk in his seat, purposely avoiding her gaze. 'It's not stupid, you're just not putting in the proper amount of focus and effort. Try again.' Yusei grumbles as he rereads the questions again.

No matter how hard he tried he couldn't figure it out. What was the answer? Hell if he knew. In general this felt like such a waste of time. But he couldn't tell his aunt that, less she gives him another smack.

Her expression softens as he taps the table, a clear sign of frustration. 'Take a step back Yusei, look at the question at a different angle. Because burning a hole into the textbook isn't going to help you.' He sighs, slumping his shoulders as he does as asked.

It was thanks to her that he was able to make it through college with a major in mechanical engineering and minor in business management. And now was following his dreams of owning a vehicles repair shop.

So was it any wonder that the young man would name his business after probably the most selfless lady he's ever had the pleasure of knowing? "Hey boss~ Time for lunch!" A short redhead poked out from the door, beaming at Yusei.

"Thanks Rally. Just give me a sec." And it wasn't just his life she touched while living on earth. "Phew. Time sure flew today." Raising his arms above his head, Yusei stretched his arms, sighing when he felt a satisfying pop in his elbows before standing up.

Glancing his blue eyes up, he found his young employee already gone. Rally Dawson was a good kid, if a little out there. But Yusei couldn't really fault him, he'd been living on the streets for years pickpocketing money and food to survive.

Hell he met the now sixteen year old a couple years back when the boy was caught going through his aunts trash. He was nothing more than skin and bones back then. Fighting just like the rest of them. Sighing once more Yusei left his garage.

Finding his secretary and adopted brother, as expected eating the sandwiches Yusei had made for them this morning. "Here! I got us some sodas from upstairs." A small smile came to the twenty-three year old's face as he thanks the teen.

For a few moments there was nothing but peace and quiet as they ate. They weren't due for anymore scheduled customers for a good half hour at least. Giving the mechanic a much needed break. "Hey Yusei?" Eventually the short boy glanced down with a somber expression.

Kicking his feet, looking much younger, sadder. "What's up?" He could probably already guess, but he still waited for him to ask. "Could we go visit Martha? After work?" Rally fidgeted in his seat, unable to look his boss in the eye. Completely missing his face soften at the question.

"Yeah. I've been meaning to visit anyways. We'll take the new runner i'm working on." It's been two years since her passing, and though the two were healing from her departure, her presence is greatly missed.

There were times one of the boys would see something at the corner of their eye and turn, expecting a warm wrinkled face greeting them. The disappointment easily seen in their gazes when reality reminds them that she's gone. "Awesome!"

Gray eyes brightened at the answer. He immediately goes back to his meal, practically inhaling it in a few quick bites. Even after he started living with him and his aunt, Rally was never able to let his habit of finishing his food as quickly as possible go.

Though he was living with Yusei, worked for him, and had food at his disposal He was always afraid of going hungry. It would be a long time if ever for him to feel secure. "Who else is coming in today?" With a final swallow Rally gave a small burp before grabbing his papers. He's silent for a few moments.

Quickly scanning through today's schedule. Though just glancing through all the papers, there was no doubt the next few weeks were going to be busy. The duo were going to have their hands seriously full with customers.

"Let's see this morning we had...Lenny, Mr. Kuzuyama, and Alex. We still got Grady and Rick. Originally some lady named Setsuko Izayoi and the tan man himself Bolt was gonna be our last ones for today but both had to change dates..." Actually it was incredible how booked they were today alone.

With the exception of Ms. Izayoi whom he spoke to a few days ago, all of their customers were friends and acquaintances Yusei and Martha made over the years. They were good people who lived in the poverish Satellite section of town.

And all of them knew they could rely on the talented twenty-three year old to do some miracle work without over charging. Still Rally couldn't help but worry about his brother figure. Yusei may know his stuff but he was just one guy.

If it wasn't for the sixteen year old taking care of the appointments and phone calls, he'd probably work himself sick. And at times when Rally was too young to be officially hired he actually was.

"I don't know how you do it. Don't you ever get tired messing with machines all day? And even then when you're not working you're cooking, helping me with my homework and teaching little kids that come by how to play duel monsters. How!?" All the redhead gets is a laugh from his boss.

Making him pout. If their roles were reversed Rally would probably be dead on his feet. "I'm serious Yusei! I'm amazed that you actually manage to find time to sleep with everything you do." Not that he'd admit it, but that last one was a bit of a stretch.

The mechanic was lucky if he got four or so hours of rest...But he didn't dare tell Rally that. The last thing he wanted was for Rally to say 'I told you so' like the brat he could be, but also didn't want him to worry. He had enough to deal with and still had to remember to be a kid once in a while.

Starting with making friends instead of worrying his frizzy head about him. "I learned from the best. Martha worked double duty to raise you, me and any other kids she found on the street. If she could do all that, then I can manage taking care of my business and keeping your ass in school."

Raising his can Yusei takes one last swig. Emptying all the contents to the last drop. With a smirk he ruffles the teens hair, purposely annoying him. "Hey! Stop that." Satisfied and full, Yusei makes his way back to the garage.

"I still think you're over doing things." To Saint Martha's. "I'll make it work somehow. You just focus on you alright?" What an idiotic excuse for a brother Rally had..."No way! I got your back~"

But he wouldn't have it any other way.

to be continued

Author Notes: Can we just talk about how much i like Rally? For the longest time I couldn't tell if he was a boy or a girl, but I still loved the sibling thing he had going on with Yusei. I wished he had more screentime...and though he gets way more in this story.

He deserves all the love and spotlight in the world lol. But that is it for now everyone. If you like this story please feel free to fav/follow/review as it would mean so much to me~ I'll see you next time, tchao for now.
