Drumming her fingers on the countertop, Evelyn couldn't help but let out several sighs, her eyes flicking to the clock that sat above the nurses station.

How long did it take for her mum to go and fill out some paperwork?

It had been a few weeks since Evelyn had met Alice, Edward and Jasper out in the woods and it was now finally her first day of school. Part of her was excited while the other half dreaded meeting those three yet again. There was just something about them that freaked her out.

She looked at the clock again. Well, she wouldn't get the chance to meet them again if her mum didn't hurry up - she was going to be late.

Just as she reached for her phone to send her mum a text, the sounds of gasps and giggles caught her attention, her head turning to look at the three nurses that were sitting in front of her.

They had all turned a bright red, their eyes bright and pupils noticeable wide - even from a distance.

Frowning, Evelyn turned to look in the direction they were staring at, her eyebrows rising when she saw the best looking doctor she had ever seen.

And he was heading straight to her, a wide smile on his face.

"You must be Evelyn!" He said as he approached her, sticking his hand out in greeting, "I'm Dr Carlisle Cullen, I've heard a lot about you,"

Evelyn shoved down the thoughts about his looks, her own small smile making its way onto her face as she shook his hand politely.

It was freezing cold.

Staring at his hand in shock for a moment, she shook her head, eyes moving back up to his face. "Oh...yeah, I suppose my mum has been talking about me," She forced out with a small chuckle, her smile dropping. She always hated when her mum talked about her to strangers. It was usually about Evelyn's many achievements, something that the young girl hated talking about with people she'd never spoken to before.

Dr Cullen simply chuckled, "No, actually, I haven't had the pleasure of spending much time with your mother yet. My children, Jasper, Edward and Alice, talk about you a lot, however," He said with a wide smile.

Evelyn's eyebrows flew up. His children? He looked barely 30, how could he have three children?

Four children, her brain reminded her. Jasper had a twin sister, Rosalie.

Still shocked by this revelation, she could only smile in response. Maybe they were adopted, she thought. Or, at least, some of them had to be adopted. Jasper and his sister Rosalie had the last name Hale so they were the most likely candidates.

Realising that she had been silent for too long, she nodded, "Oh, uh, of course, yeah. I did meet them briefly a while back,"

But not long enough for them to 'talk a lot' about her though.

"Ah, here comes your mother," Dr Cullen said, his eyes landing somewhere over her head, "It was lovely meeting you, Evelyn. I hope your first day at school goes well," He smiled at her, teeth practically glowing under the lights, before he turned around and left.

She watched him go, a slight crawling sensation running up her back. While not as strong as when she had met his children, she definitely had a weird feeling about Dr Cullen.

But then her mother was bustling over to her, the filled in paperwork being folded and stuffed into her backpack before a quick kiss on the cheek and tight hug, "You'll do great today, Ev. I'm only a phone call away, yeah?"

Evelyn nodded, eyes flicking over to the clock one final time before she was rushing out of the hospital to her car. 20 minutes until she had to be at school.

She could make it.

Evelyn didn't make it.

Despite the hospital only being a few blocks away from Forks Highschool, she ended being over half an hour late thanks to a car crash that had her stuck in traffic for most of what was supposed to be her first lesson.

When she did finally get to school, she drove around in circles, trying to find a parking space - something that took far longer than it should have - before she finally made it into the front office, being greeted by the disapproving face of Mrs Cope, the secretary.

"Late on your first day? Not a good start, Miss Hale," She looked over her glasses with a raised eyebrow before reaching over and grabbing several bits of paper.

Evelyn swallowed, walking closer to the desk, "I'm sorry, I had to wait to get some paperwork at the hospital and then there was a car crash," She explained, reaching into her bag and handing over the paperwork with an awkward smile.

The secretary took the paperwork and looked over it carefully, nodding approvingly before putting it in one of the many baskets that lay besides her. "I see. Don't let it happen again and we can forget today ever happened," She smiled warmly as she spoke, instantly calming Evelyn's nerves.

Looking at one of the pieces of paper she had grabbed, Mrs Cope scanned it quickly, "Well you've missed most of English so there's no point in you going there, it'll be over by the time you arrive." She observed, looking at what Evelyn assumed was her timetable, "Now, you were supposed to be shown to each of your lessons by Jessica Stanley but seeing as you were late, I'll take you to Trigonometry and you can meet her there rather than call her to the office,"

Evelyn nodded, happy to do whatever Mrs Cope thought was best. Taking a seat by the door, she simply watched for the next 10 minutes as Mrs Cope made a few phone calls, one of which was to Mr Mason - her English teacher.

Eventually though, it was time to make her way to her next lesson, Mrs Cope leading her out of the building as she explained her timetable to her, pointing to each building her lessons took place in as they passed until they made it to Building 5.

By now the first lesson was over and students were streaming out of the door, all of them casting curious looks at Evelyn as they passed. She recognized a few of them from her trips into the main part of town, sharing small smiles with a few of them, though no one caught her interest.

"Oh look, here's Jessica now!" Mrs Cope exclaimed with a smile, lifting a hand to wave at the approaching girl, "She should be able to show you directly to your classroom,"

The introductions were quick, the two girls smiling at each other before they were left alone, Mrs Cope bustling off to make her way back to the office.

"So," Jessica dragged out as she showed Evelyn the way to their classroom, "Why'd you move to Forks? You lived in New York, right? I'd never leave if I lived there!"

Immediately, flashes of her father in a hospital bed flew through her mind, her jaw clenching as she remembered the way his hand had felt so cold and frail in hers.

She shrugged, "Oh, nothing special," Her voice was painstakingly casual, "My mum just got tired of how busy it always was - the commute to work was always crappy, you know, with all the traffic," She picked anxiously at her nails, hoping Jessica would believe her lie.

"I suppose that's a fair reason - although why anyone would move here out of all the quiet towns in America, I don't know," She shook her head sympathetically, "Here we are - good morning, Mr Varner! This is Evelyn, our newest student!" Her voice was over the top happy as she walked in. Far too happy for the first day of school.

Her morning classes went quickly, all of them just being a basic oversight of what they would be learning throughout the year while their workbooks and a few textbooks got handed out.

When lunchtime finally arrived, Jessica took her to meet Mr Mason so she could get a list of the texts they would be reading that semester before taking her to the cafeteria to meet her friends.

"Okay so this is Mike, Angela, Lauren and Eric! Guys, this Evelyn, the new student!" Jessica introduced her to the group, all of them smiling and waving at her as she sat down, immediately bombarding her with questions.

She had grown sick of the questions that every single person she met seemed to ask, it was like they had all been handed a sheet of the questions they should ask her, but she answered them with a small smile anyway, not wanting to seem rude.

"I love your accent, Evelyn! Seriously, I would die to have one like that," Lauren gushed, leaning her cheek on her palm, "It's not too strong like the ones you hear on TV - its nice,"

Both Eric and Mike nodded enthusiastically in agreement.

Evelyn smiled, her ears growing red at the attention that she kept on receiving. People even came over from other tables to introduce themselves, offering invitations to hang out - most of which she declined politely, much to the amusement of Jessica and Lauren.

"Yeah, you definitely don't want to go anywhere with him, he's gone through half the girls in this school," Lauren said after one boy had walked off.

"Oh no, you made the right decision there. Hanging out with her would absolutely tank your reputation - just stick with us, honestly," Instructed Jessica casually as she filed her nails, her half finished salad lying rejected on her tray in front of her, "They'll stop coming up to you after a few days - you're all the rage right now, it'll die down soon, don't worry,"

Evelyn wasn't sure if that was reassurance or an insult.

Or both.

Picking at her food, she mostly listened to the conversations around her, only chipping in whenever she was asked something. It was nothing like the friends she had left back home but it was nice.

"Oh, seems like even the Cullen's are interested in the new meat," Lauren said with a slight sneer audible in her voice, Jessica giggling in response.

"Of course they would be, they aren't the newbies anymore," She replied, looking over her shoulder discreetly.

Looking up at the mention of the Cullen's, Evelyn followed the groups eyeline, landing on a table in the far corner. Her eyes widened as she realised every single one of them was drop dead gorgeous.

She had seen Edward, Alice and Jasper before but that was in the dark woods, with barely any light coming through.

In the clear daytime they were beautiful.

They were joined by two others, a large, dark haired muscular boy and a tall, willowy girl with blonde hair that must be Rosalie.

And they were all staring at her.

Alice and Edward were the only ones to acknowledge her, the short girl waving happily at her while the boy just nodded shortly, his eyes dark and broody.

She gave a small smile in return, her eyes drifting back over to Jasper and Rosalie - the ones who shared her last name.

Jasper still looked like he was in pain, his eyes quickly jumping down to his food. Rosalie on the other hand, met her stare with one of her own. Her eyes were unusually cold and had Evelyn quickly turning back around in her seat, her ears growing red once again.

"You know them?" Mike asked in shock, obviously referring to the acknowledgment both Alice and Edward had given her.

Shrugging, Evelyn gave up on eating the food in front of her, appetite now well and truly gone, "Mm, not really. I briefly met Alice, Edward and Jasper in the forest the first week I moved here, why?"

The five of them shared a confused look, Angela being the one to answer her question, "Well the Cullens usually keep to themselves. They moved here just over a year ago and only interact with each other. People tried to make friends with them when they joined but everyone gave it fairly quickly,"

"Yeah, not to mention the fact that everyone realised they were freaks," Mike butted in, "They're siblings and they're dating,"

Evelyn's eyebrows shot up, looking back at the Cullen table with wide eyes. She quickly identified the couples - the big muscular guy had his arm around Rosalie while Jasper and Alice's hands were interlocked on top of the table.

They were all still watching her.

Angela was quick to scold him, "They aren't actually related, Mike. They're adopted,"

"Oh, so they are adopted," Evelyn spoke without thinking, mostly to herself then the others. She looked back to see her new friends staring at her in confusion and scrambled to explain, "I met Dr Cullen this morning. I thought maybe they were adopted because he seemed too young to have that many kids our age,"

The three girls giggled at the mention of the hot doctor while the boys rolled their eyes.

"You said you only met the three of them, yeah?" Eric asked, grinning when Evelyn nodded, "So you don't know about the Ice Queen or her brother slash boyfriend, Emmet?"

Angela hit his arm, frowning at him, "Dont call her that, its mean,"

"Well he's not wrong, is he, Ang?" Mike spoke up, "I've never spoken to someone as cold as her - if looks could kill…" He trailed off but his unspoken words were obvious.

Tucking away the new information, Evelyn shook her head, "Alice mentioned that Rosalie and Jasper were twins but that was only because we share the same last name. Apart from their names, I know nothing about any of them," She explained, sipping her juice.

Jessica's head flew around so fast that Evelyn feared her neck would snap, "Your last name is Hale?" She asked, eyes wide at this new piece of information.

"Uh, yeah?" Evelyn's voice was confused, her hands unconsciously now playing with the cap of her drinks bottle, "I thought you knew that,"

"Uh, no." Lauren mocked, her own interest now sparked, "We were just told your first name,"

The whole table was staring at her now and Evelyn was getting uncomfortable. Had they never met anyone with the same last names before?

Tilting his head, Eric raised an eyebrow, "You know, you do kind of look like Rosalie. Same face - although it's hard to tell. I'm sure if you died your hair blonde, it would be more obvious,"

Both Jessica and Angela nodded in agreement but Lauren and Mike looked unconvinced, leaning back in their chairs simultaneously. Evelyn reached up to hold a thick strand of her auburn hair defensively. "I'm not dying my hair,"

Lauren snorted derisively, rolling her eyes when Jessica elbowed her, shooting her a look.

"Of course not," Angela said, her voice soothing, "Although if you did, i'm sure you'd look great," She smiled kindly and Evelyn couldn't help but smile back, a small ball of happiness forming in her chest as the conversation moved to their next lessons, a few groans being heard as most of them realised they had Gym.

Evelyn's smile grew at the normality of it all, a sense of belonging growing as she realised she could potentially be happy here - something she never thought could be possible.

Lunch had passed quickly, as had both of her last two lessons - Biology and Gym.

Knowing that she was in no rush to get home, Evelyn decided to shower at school, having really put her all into the tennis match Coach Capp had decided they'd play for the first day back.

Although it was a short shower, all of her friends had finished changing and gone before she had even managed to get out her body wash, shouting goodbyes as they left.

Soon the whole class had gone and it was abnormally quiet. Too quiet.

Feeling a bit freaked out, Evelyn finished her shower as quickly as possible, drying herself and getting changed within record time before leaving the changing rooms.

Despite only being alone for less than 10 minutes, the whole school was empty. Feeling a bit spooked out as she walked down one of the corridors, she looked out of a window that oversaw the car park. Movement caught her attention and she looked over to see the Cullens walking out of the main building, their arms laden with piles of books.

Clearly they had just been to the school library.

Despite feeling a bit like a stalker, she continued to watch them walk across to where two fancy cars were parked, letting out a scoff as she looked over to where her own basic car was parked. Of course they had super expensive cars.

Evelyn was not poor by any means - her father and aunt had owned a banking company together, inherited through their family over the last few generations. She had just been taught not to flaunt her riches, something the Cullens clearly had no problem doing.

Sighing, she looked back over to where they stood, her eyes locking with none other than Rosalie.

Startling slightly, she smiled awkwardly at her, despite knowing she likely wouldn't be able to see the smile from that distance, before retreating from the window and speed walking down the corridor, taking out her phone to text her mum as she walked, asking if she needed anything from the shops.

Still looking at her phone, she didn't see the other person walking through the doorway she was approaching until she slammed into them, forehead knocking against their chin.

Losing her balance, she felt herself falling backwards, her hand tightening on her phone as she squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the pain of her butt meeting the hard floor.

Suddenly a metal-like grip wrapped around both of her arms, jerking her back up before steadying her slightly.

"You're extremely clumsy. You should watch where you're going next time," A cool voice instructed her, still holding their tight grip on her arms.

Evelyn opened her eyes, blinking slightly as the light flooded back in. Once she was sure she was steady, she stepped back, the person who had saved her letting go bow that it was obvious she wasn't going to fall over again. "I'm sorry," She said faintly, rubbing where her forehead had smacked against the other person's chin.

That was going to bruise later.

Once her eyes had adjusted to the light, she turned to look at the person who had caught her, eyes widening when she realised it was Rosalie. She stared at her in shock, "I- what? Weren't you just down in the carpark?"

Rosalie stared at her coldly and suddenly Evelyn understood why Eric had called her the ice queen. "I thought maybe you were lost and came to help seeing as your friends have already left,"

Eyes narrowing ever so slightly, Evelyn looked over her shoulder. She could still see the window where she had watched the Cullens down in the carpark, "Yeah but that was less than a minute ago. We're on the first floor," She was flabbergasted, trying to figure out exactly how the other girl had gotten up here so quickly.

Staring at the shorter girl with no emotions, Rosalie simply raised a perfectly plucked eyebrow, "I'm a fast walker - you know most people thank someone when they offer help," Her voice was still cold but Evelyn thought maybe she heard a slight bit of an amused undertone.

She was imagining things, clearly.

"Right yes! Sorry!" Evelyn shot out, her thoughts suddenly scrambled with confusion, her ease when it came to talking to strangers now gone, "Thank you for catching me and for coming to offer help. I'm not lost, I took a shower after gym so my friends left before I did." She explained before thinking maybe she sounded a bit ungrateful again, "But thank you anyway, seriously!"

Rosalie simply nodded, her eyes still cold, "Your welcome,"

It was silent, Rosalie just staring at her while Evelyn started to grow a bright red, desperately racking her mind for something to say as the silence grew awkward.

Or it felt awkward for her, at least. Rosalie seemed quite happy to just stand there staring.

After a few minutes Rosalie sighed, her rigid posture relaxing slightly as she spoke again, "Don't you have anywhere to be? I can't stand here for the rest of the day,"

Once again, Evelyn was scrambling to speak, practically tripping over her words, "Oh! Uh - yes, I do! Sorry! I'm going food shopping," Her voice wavered slightly as she spoke. It was like Rosalie was sucking all of her usual confidence and absorbing it into her own.

"Fine. I may as well walk you to your car then seeing as we're heading in the same direction," She said, turning around and walking off in the direction she had come, not even looking over her shoulder to check if the other girl was following.

Rushing to keep up with her long strides, Evelyn managed to keep a stream of conversation going. She thought maybe the older girl would ignore her questions but, to her credit, she answered each and every one.

"So, uh, you've lived here for a year, right?" Evelyn asked, stumbling slightly.

Rosalie's hand shot out to grab her arm, ready to pull her back up, but Evelyn caught herself, looking up at the blonde girl with a sheepish smile, "Can you at least try to be more careful. You're like a walking accident waiting to happen," She sighed, letting go and crossing her arms.

Evelyn smiled slightly at her exasperated tone. The words may have been harsh but they weren't insulting, "I'm sorry, I'm not usually clumsy at all," She explained.

"I'll have to take your word for it," Was all Rosalie said, eyeing her slightly as they walked out into the car park, "But to answer your question, yes. My family and I moved here in August last year,"

Nodding, Evelyn pulled out her car keys, pressing the button to unlock it as they approached, "I see - and do you ever get used to how boring this town is?" She asked her final question, looking up at the other girl as they came to a stop by the car.

Returning the stare, Rosalie seemed thrown off by the question, clearly not having expected it. The corners of her lips lifted up slightly as she answered with a simple, "No,"

Pride bloomed in Evelyn's chest as she stared at the very small smile of amusement.

She had made the ice queen smile.

Smiling in return, her eyes drifted over to the other side of the car park, widening when she realised both of the Cullen's cars had gone, "They just left you here?" She asked, shocked?

Rosalie looked over her shoulder to where Evelyn was staring, "I told them to go when I came back to help you," She said simply, as if it wasn't a big deal at all.

"Well you have to at least let me give you a lift home, to thank you for helping me," Evelyn offered, gesturing to the passenger seat.

Staring at the car for a second, Rosalie shook her head, "No. My house isn't far away and you're going in the opposite direction,"

Evelyn went to open her mouth to argue but the other girl shook her head again.

"Maybe another time," Her tone was firm as she opened the drivers door and Evelyn got the hint that this decision was final.

Nodding, she got into the driver's seat, looking up at the other girl with a smile, "Thank you again, really. I promise I'm not usually such a klutz,"

Rosalie raised an eyebrow at that, clearly not believing her but nodded anyway, "Anytime," Her voice still the cold tone it had been throughout the whole conversation - not that it bothered Evelyn.

It was very obvious that the older girl was not as cold as she seemed.

"Right well, I'll see you tomorrow, then?" She asked, trying to shove down the small bubble of hope that tried to rise inside of her but it was futile, she already knew the hopefulness had been obvious in her voice.

It was silent for a few seconds as Rosalie stared at her before nodding stiffly and stepping back, closing the driver's door.

Grinning victoriously, Evelyn quickly started the car up, rolling down the window expectantly.

"Put your seatbelt on," Rosalie instructed before she turned on her heel and walked off in what must be the direction of her house.

Evelyn watched her go, still grinning, before pulling out of the parking space and leaving the school, eyes flicking up to watch the tall figure that was Rosalie on her mirror until she wasn't visible anymore.

Maybe the Ice Queen wasn't so icy after all.
