Chapter 21
"Name?" Asked the woman behind the desk "Barbara Gordon, General Bolton Requested me" Barbara wore dark brown Combat trousers and boots, with a forest green Tee, her long red hair was pulled into a tight pony tale. She hadn't worn much makeup but had decided to use foundation to cover the freckles on her face, she felt it made people take her more seriously, her thick-rimmed glasses perched high on her nose.
"Yes, he's expecting you in his office, Houser Take Miss Gordon to the general's office" A young blonde man stepped forward and the woman at the desk motioned for her to follow him. Barbara was led down a short hallway to a door with a metal nameplate that read General L. Bolton.
"General" Houser knocked on the door "Enter" A gruff voice called back, Houser opened the door and motioned Barbara in,
"Thank you" The General dismissed the young officer. Lyle Bolton was a large man with close-cut brown hair, he wore dark brown trousers and a tan button-up with the sleeves rolled just above his elbows, Barbara stood between the door and the large wooden desk "Have a seat" With the invitation she sat in the wooden chair across from him "Thank you for coming"
"Of course sir, I must say I'm a little surprised, I was under the impression I would be receiving news of rejection or acceptance through mail" Barbara held the man's eyes,
"Yes, I felt you deserved to be told in person, I've looked over your file several times and it's clear you've put a lot of effort into preparing yourself for a military career" The general had the file open in front of him now, laid on the desk "Yes sir" Barbara couldn't help but take a glance at it,
"Which makes it unfortunate that I have to inform you that your application is being denied" They both sat in silence for a moment,
"I believe I have the right to request the reason for rejection" Barbara was aware of the rules "You do" He answered with a slight nod "I would like the reason for rejection then" Barbara's eyes hardened as she held the man's gaze "To start with you have a history of severe asthma attacks" The general lifted one of the papers from the file "On top of that your psyche evaluation came back with some concerning results including signs of post-traumatic stress disorder" Barbara stood "Thank you for your time general."
Titan Tower
Barbara slammed the door to her room, she walked to the bed and dumped the pile of books off of it causing a loud thud, a minute later the door cracked open,
"You ok?" Dick asked pushing the door closed behind him "They rejected me" She answered "I'm sorry" Barbara turned to face him anger written on her face "Don't fucking lie to me, you never wanted me to join the airforce in the first place" She had taken a step closer to him "You and Dad were always trying to talk me out of this, well you two got your damn wish"
"You're right, okay I wasn't for you enlisting" Dick replied calmly "And am I upset you won't be leaving, no but I am sorry because I know this means everything to you"
"Okay, I'm sorry" Barbara's phone pinged, She pulled it out her eyes growing wide as she read the notification "It's about Rachel, The check on her name came back, She has a sister."
