The four individuals, Lori, Kieran, Cheren, and Bianca, began their way outside the village they called home, as the Pokemon Professor had wanted to meet them slightly outside, in order to teach them one more lesson before sending them on their way. Bianca, excitedly, made a suggestion.
"Why don't we start our journey at the same time?" She said. "Take our first step together!"
"I don't see why not." Lori replied. Kieran nodded in agreement.
"That's fine by me." Cheren said, not quite getting it, but Bianca would probably insist, so it'd be better to just say yes the first time.
The four lined up at the edge of the town, and on the count of three, took the step outside at the same time. Bianca was ecstatic.
"We're trainers now!" Bianca said, hugging the nearby Cheren, who protested this.
"Bianca..." Cheren said, after being let go of.
"Oh, whoops." Bianca said. "Guess I just got over excited."
"You don't say..." Cheren replied, a bit mad, but not overly so.
"Well," Lori said. "Why don't we see what the professor wanted?" The other three nodded in agreement, and shortly up the path was Professor Juniper, who was waiting for the quartet to arrive.
"There you are!" The professor said. "You ready for your last lesson?"
"Yeah!" Bianca said excitedly. The other three agreed, though less enthusiastically.
The Pokemon Professor showed the group how to capture pokemon in the tall grass. Starting with their Minccino, the wild Patrat was attacked some, and after combat, the Patrat was weakened, Professor Juniper showing her preferred throwing technique, though noting that there are multiple ways to make it accurately hit the Pokemon. The Pokemon was captured fairly easily. Due to having a non-standard starter, she offered Lori the Patrat, who accepted it, though Professor Juniper first healed it using a Potion that she had on hand.
"Thanks!" Lori said, noting how having a second Pokemon would be useful.
"Now you four all have fun, though could you do me a favor?" Professor Juniper asked.
"Sure, what is it?" Kieran said. The other three thought to wait on the response, to save repeating the question.
"Well, since you'll be off across Unova, I thought i'd ask if you could fill out these Pokedexes." Professor Juniper said. "You'll get some information just scanning it when you encounter a wild Pokemon, but you'll get more information from capturing them, so I'd recommend you do that to help finish my research. I'm only one person, and I have to help maintain the lab, and I have another errand to run anyways."
'I don't see why not." Cheren said.
"Of course!" Bianca yelled. "I mean you've helped us out so much!"
"Sure." Kieran replied. Lori gave a thumbs up.
"Well that settles it then." Professor Juniper said. "I'm heading up to the first gym, I presume I'll meet you all there?"
The quartet agreed. After Professor Juniper walked off, the four were left to their own devices, allowing their journey to properly start.
"Hey, we should have a contest!" Bianca said.
"Of what?" Kieran inquired.
"Whoever catches the most Pokemon before Accumula Town wins!" Bianca replied.
"It'll help research, so why not?" Cheren replied.
"Don't see an issue." Lori said. Kieran seemed unsure, but agreed as to not disappoint Bianca. He'd just not try very hard to.
"Well that's that then!" Bianca replied. "I'll meet you there!"
Bianca ran off, chased off by Lori and Cheren, into the tall grass, leaving Kieran to stand alone right before it.
"Well here goes nothing..." Kieran said, taking a step into it, before encountering a Lillipup.
"Well I know what this means." Kieran said, sending out the Snivy, which he named Sprout. "Just use what you have!" He commanded the grass snake, giving that it only knew one offensive move anyways, that being Tackle. It attacked the Lillipup, doing a fairly significant amount of damage to the significantly weaker Pokemon. Kieran simply elected to finish the Lillipup off, giving that it was non-fatal to do so, and that the lack of larger predators meant the limited population on Route 1 was at the top of the food chain, and wouldn't get eaten anyways. Hearing his companions, he began to walk towards the next town over, encountering various Patrats and Lillipups. After encountering a few of them, and Sprout levelling up to level six, and almost to level seven, he heard a human-sounding whimpering from across the fence, in the floral garden someone had set up.
"Hello?" Kieran asked, unsure of what was happening. No response. Kieran elected to hop the fence, careful to trample the flowers as little as possible, before encountering a male older than himself, seemingly quite scared, pointing a sharp rock at him. He had scruffy facial hair, and seemed fairly unkempt, dark brown hair visibly dirty. Kieran wasn't sure how long the man had been there, clothes seemingly roughed up, the man also slightly bruised.
"Stay back!" He yelled.
"I'm just trying to help." Kieran said calmly, taking a defensive stance, as did the companion Snivy.
"How do I know you won't try and hurt me?" The man replied.
"Do I have any capacity to?" Kieran said. "It's literally my first time out as a trainer, Sprout's not even learned a grass-type move yet..."
"Well..." The man replied. "If you promise not to tell anyone where I am, I do have something you could do for me..."
"Well why should I trust you?" Kieran said, noting the whole stranger danger thing.
"Just, uh..." The man replied, rolling over a Pokeball. "Could you take care of her? I know too much, and I don't want my Pokemon getting hurt, nobody seemed to want her since she's so weak, but since you're a new trainer and all..."
Kieran had Sprout investigate the Pokeball, since Pokemon healing was significantly cheaper than the human medical costs. Upon releasing the ball, an Audino popped out.
"David!" The Audino yelled out, running over to her soon-to-be former owner, hugging him. "You said I might not ever see you again..."
"Kid..." David said to the Audino, not able to understand them but knowing emotionally the things that they felt through body-language and tone of Pokespeech.. "I'm sorry... I can't keep you."
The Audino seemed dejected. "B-But why?"
"Shh..." David said. "It's just how it has to be... I don't want you getting hurt for what I've done..."
"What did you do?" Kieran asked.
"I'm a whistleblower." David replied. "I'm the reason folks around Unova know some fairly bad things."
"What sort of bad things?" Kieran asked, worriedly.
"Let's hope you never have to find out..." David replied. "Anyways, take care of Audrey for me, okay?"
"You're sending me off with some kid?!" Audrey, the Audino, replied, seemingly dejected that David would simply abandon them for a new trainer. Who knows if they'd even be any good at training?
"Calm down sweetie..." David replied to his last and weakest Pokemon. "I don't want you captured by Team Plasma, it's for the best."
The Audino began to sob, Sprout heading over to try and console them, as Kieran provided a small amount of supply to David, tending to the bruises he had as best the teenager knew how.
"Hey..." Sprout replied. "You okay?"
"What do you think?!" The Audino replied angrily. "I'm being abandoned..."
"I mean from what I'm hearing, your trainer's in grave danger..." Sprout said.
"I just wanna stay with him, I mean he's the only trainer I've known, he's been with me since day one..." Audrey said, tearily.
"Well he's saying any day now someone's gonna get him, and hey, maybe we could be friends? I mean he doesn't seem to have any other Pokemon, does he?" Sprout replied back, unsure of how to console the other Pokemon.
"I just..." Audrey said, sobbing while hugging the grass snake. Sprout hugged back.
"I'm sure it'll be fine..." Sprout said. "I've heard from the Professor that those whistleblower folks dont make it sometimes..."
"Oh Arceus..." Audrey replied. "It's that bad?"
"It could be..." Sprout said. "I mean what else would be be giving you away for?"
Audrey seemed to understand a bit better the situation, but was still extremely sad.
"Hey..." Sprout said. "I'm sure you can make friends with me, and whoever else Kieran ends up with!"
"Kieran your trainer?" Audrey asked. Sprout nodded.
"Looks like your Snivy there's making friends with Audrey." David replied. "Though if you're a new trainer, let me do something real quick..."
"What?" Kieran asked. David, using the sharp rock, broke the Pokeball's hinges, releasing Audrey in the process.
"What good does that do?" Kieran asked.
"You catch her now, that way you're not tied to me, in case they want to come after you for her..." David replied, hobbling over to give Audrey one last hug, and a kiss on the forehead goodbye.
"Good luck kid." David said to Audrey. "Make me proud, okay?"
"I will, David..." Audrey said, grinning slightly through the tears.
David also seemed teary at this point, noting how emotional the Audino had gotten, making one more request to Kieran. "Make sure she gets plenty of time outside her Pokeball, I think it'd do her good. Especially with the whole abandonment thing."
"I can do that, yeah." Kieran said. David instructed Audrey to allow Kieran to capture her, and after the process was completed, Kieran walked out of the flower field, making sure at David's request to take the same footprints back, including walking backwards. Once Kieran had reached the other side of the last set of tall grass, Sprout having levelled up to level seven and learned vine whip, he let Audrey out, going down to the group to her eye level.
"I'm sure it'll be fine Audrey..." Kieran said, just as worried about the fate of Audrey's ex-trainer as she was. Kieran looked in his Pokedex at Audrey's level and moveset, seeming excited at her level 10, with the moveset of Pound, Double Slap, Refresh, and Helping Hand.
"That's stronger than I am..." Sprout said. "So much for so weak."
"Thanks I guess..." Audrey said. "Just never did the whole fighting thing too much to get stronger is all."
"You two sure are fast friends, probably." Kieran had no idea what they were saying, but observed that they were talkative. The trio began towards Accumula Town, off to catch up with Kieran's human buddies.
