Upon entering Route 2, Kieran got a call on his Xtransciever, a model of cellular phone that was common for young trainers in Unova. It was his mother.
"Hey Mom!" Kieran said excitedly.
"Hey Delilah." Lori replied.
"So how's that training been going?" Delilah asked the two there. "And say, where's Bianca and Cheren?"
"They're further ahead." Lori said. "We needed a break, they're probably in the next town already, waiting for us."
"A break already?" Delilah asked. "What for?"
"Just existentialism." Lori replied. "Went to a nice little concert, that got us feeling better."
"Yeah." Kieran said. "So why'd you call, Mom?"
"Well I mean I was just going to tell you I'm on my way, going to hang up now." Delilah said, before doing just that.
"Hm?" Kieran said, before noticing his mother exiting the small tunnel between the town and the route that they had just exited.
"Oh hey mom!" Kieran said, giving her a hug.
"I finally caught up with you... And look how far you've come already!" Delilah said. "I'm proud of you."
"Yeah, being a trainer's a lot harder than I thought..." Kieran said.
"Lonely?" Delilah asked her son.
"A bit, just I meant hard on the psyche more than anything else." Kieran replied.
"Well I mean you're never truly alone, you know?" Delilah replied. "You have your friends, your Pokemon, and you're always in my thoughts, so..."
"Thanks mom." Kieran said.
"Well anyways, here's what I was here for." Delilah dug out of her purse, grabbing a nice pair of shoes.
"What are those?" Lori asked.
"It's a pair of running shoes." Delilah replied. "Found them cleaning out your room. I'm sure they'll help with your speed."
"Thanks mom." Kieran replied.
"Well that's all, I'll be heading back home." Delilah said. "I was going over to Bianca's place for dinner, her parents said they'd make something good, since we're all a bit down with empty nest."
"Well have a nice meal!" Lori said.
"Love you mom." Kieran replied.
"Love you too." Delilah said, heading back home. This left Lori and Kieran to their own devices, looking on at Route 2.
"Well, uh." Lori said. "Shall we?"
"Don't see what else there is to do." Kieran replied, beginning to walk off. Lori followed, as they weren't running so she could keep up.
"Wonder how fast you can go with those on." Lori proposed.
"Don't know, probably shouldn't leave you behind though." Kieran replied. "They're already waiting for both of us so..."
"Fair enough." Lori replied. The group continued to walk down Route 2, encountering a few Pokemon along the way, Lori's Emolga growing to level 8, and her Patrat growing to level 4. The duo then encountered a trainer, who Lori managed to defeat, though fainting her Patrat. They observed the path down to the city, wondering if they should run back and heal that Pokemon.
"I don't know." Kieran said. "I mean we're late already..."
"Yeah, that's fair, there's probably one in the next town too..." Lori replied. Continuing down the path to the next town over, Lori had managed to find a potion on the ground.
"Hey, nifty." Kieran said. "Good on you for finding that."
"Thanks!" Lori replied with a bit of a grin, before encountering two trainers.
"hi!" The one, a young boy, said. "I was talking with this lady here and we were thinking about doing one of those double battles!"
"Double battle?" Kieran asked.
"Yeah! Like you send out your pokemon, and your friend does, and then me and my friend do the same!" The boy replied.
"Don't see why not, what do you think?" Lori asked.
"Sure." Kieran replied, before each one of them sent out a single Pokemon, though the two older trainers had slightly more powerful Pokemon. The battle was closer at first, but a lucky strike on Lori's part had managed to turn the tide in the elder group's favor. Eventually they won out, though Kieran and Lori's Pokemon they had used, Sprout and Emolga, were quite weakened.
"Good job!" Lori said to her battle partner. "We won!"
Kieran smiled, and was complimented by the smaller duo, who gave them the battle wager they had on them. Nothing too much, but enought to buy, say, a potion or something of similar price.
"Why don't we head back together?" The young boy asked. "I mean I'm sure we're all heading up to Striaton City right?"
Lori and Kieran both nodded, as the four humans began up. They encountered one more wild Pokemon, but Kieran had Audrey take care of it. At the end of the route, they encountered Bianca, who was starting off to look for Kieran and Lori.
"Where were you two?!" Bianca asked. "We've been waiting for like an hour!"
"Sorry, just needed to relax a bit..." Kieran replied.
"Yeah." Lori said in response. "Just get our mind off of things."
"Well that's fine!" Bianca said. "Say, wanna battle?"
"Could use a heal first." Kieran said. "I'm down a Pokemon, Lori's down one of hers too."
Lori nodded in agreement, as Bianca led the group off towards the Pokemon Center, first encountering Professor Juniper doing the same.
"Oh hey!" Bianca yelled. "What in Arceus's name are you doing here?"
"One of the nurses asked I come, said there was something important." Professor Juniper said, not disclosing the matter fully to the young group.
"Something wrong?" Lori asked.
"You could say that, yes." Professor Juniper replied. "I overheard you wanted to have a battle, I could heal your Pokemon real quick if you wanted to."
"Oh hey, that'd be nice." Kieran said. "Maybe Lori and Bianca could battle this time?"
"That'd work." Lori said, as Professor Juniper took the Pokeballs and went about the healing process. It was like a minature machine they had in the Pokemon Center, but it worked one Pokeball at a time.
"Nifty." Kieran commented.
"Top of the line equipment." Professor Juniper said. "This thing's around three times as expensive as any standard machine."
"How'd you afford it?" Bianca asked, bewildered.
"It's as simple as the Unovan Government gives me money on occasion to better research Pokemon if I have a good reason." Professor Juniper said. "Healing on the go sounded like a good idea to me, so."
Kieran nodded. Bianca began the battle, and Lori followed in terms of battle order. The weaker Patrat was quickly defeated by Bianca's Oshawott, but Lori's Emolga had the type advantage, quickly defeating the Oshawott. After a close battle between the Emolga and the Lillipup, Lori came out on top with an early move in her favor. Nuzzle wasn't a strong move by any means, but it had done its job. The Emolga leveled up again, now level 9. The Oshawott had also leveled up, now level 8. With the battle concluded, the now quintet of humans headed off to the Pokemon Center, since they were all heading off there anyways.
