A/N: Fun fact, or maybe not so fun. I wrote this entire story in a single google docs file. By the time I was done writing, I couldn't have the google docs file open alongside any other program/app. Everything would slow to a crawl. I don't know what that says about my computer or Google Docs, but there you go. At any rate, I didn't factor in needing to separate all the chapters to upload them…Silly me.
Also, thank you for reading, reviewing and following me and my stories! It really makes my day!
. . . . .
Rin Nohara sat in Konoha Hospital's waiting room. She was pushed to the background, because she was fine. She insisted she was, and they believed her. They had no reason not to. The medics fretted over Kakashi Hatake, who was heavily injured. Partially unconscious and unaware of his surroundings, he still managed to defend Rin as Obito made him promise. He lasted until he saw Minato's wild blond locks and passed out right as an enemy ninja was to slice off his head.
She waited for a day or two. Then she was told that Kakashi had fallen into a coma. She steeled herself, and forced back her tears. She watched as Minato's friend, Kushina Uzumaki, valiantly fought for Kakashi. Kushina's long red hair seemed to do more of the work than Kushina's words did. A younger medic she didn't know, but recognized due to the prominent patch of white hair on the front of his head, had spoken up in Kushina's defense. He declared that Hatake's always healed best in their homes, and that if anyone outside the Hatake Clan would know that best, it'd be him.
She followed as they moved him. She watched the trail of medical equipment following him. She was allowed to stay for a little bit but then Minato took her home.
She woke to learn that there was unusual activity occurring outside of Konoha. And then Kushina led her back to Konoha's hospital. Minato-sensei had seemed distracted, but she never imagined it could be for something like this.
"How the hell did he make it here!?" A tanned male medic spoke as he paced, working through what he had seen. "He has no lower legs! He can't summon and you are not crawling from Kusa to Konoha, I don't care how skilled you are. What the fuck?!"
"He went back and got him, Naginata." A second medic replied. She was short with messy light brown hair. Large glasses framed her brown eyes.
"What? No no no no no. Excuse me? Who went and got who?" Naginata pointed to her. "Don't tell me such nonsense, Hato."
"The sensei went back and got him." The second medic, Hato, continued. "I saw them this morning. And you saw what the kid looked like. It was right before you said 'Nope' and walked out of the room."
"T-that's insane…" Naginata continued to fret. "And I came back, so shut up!"
"Only because you didn't want the you-know-who on your butt." Hato nudged him with an elbow. "And the kid helps your mom every once in a while."
"I love you two idiots." An older shinobi with black hair standing next to the little group chuckled. "More than likely he left a clone or two to stay. The clone got him, and he met the clone part way. Easy when you can move like he can. Against orders too. Sakumo Hatake style. Heard the Third is pissed with him." He shook his head. "Lucky Team Seven huh…?"
"You can't talk! You're part of the team." Naginata continued to fret.
"Was. And I'm damn glad Jiraiya-sensei focused on him, instead of me. I'll always care about my teammates, but that couldn't be me. No way. Not any more." He scratched his head, shifting the orange headband he was wearing.
Hato and Naginata fell silent, for they had no real shinobi field experience and thus couldn't relate to what Minato's teammate was saying.
"Ah, lost ya? Fine. I'll talk to you later." The man looked back, and then waved to the medics who were still recovering. "Got a little sprite to look after 'cause Minato's preoccupied and somehow Kushina lost her. Go get some food already!"
As Naginata and Hato walked away, the two bumped elbows in their scrubs as though they were giving each other a high five. Rin did not notice. Nor did she realize she wasn't supposed to be in this hallway to begin with, yet no one pushed her away as they should have.
Rin only realized she knew Obito was here, but she wasn't allowed to see him. Nurses and medics and doctors and surgeons rushed past as she stood in the hallway, trying to stay out of the way.
'Minato-sensei went back for Obito by himself.' Her breath caught in her throat as she reached her conclusion.
She didn't react to Minato-sensei's old teammate leading her back to the waiting room, and leaving her in Kushina's hands.
She sat in the waiting room, unaware that she set herself down right across from heads of the grand Uchiha Clan, Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha. She only noticed that Kushina sat next to her and then just barely. 'Minato-sensei is in trouble, because he went back to retrieve Obito…'
"Kakashi-kun always said Minato-sensei was going to get us killed one day…" She murmured. "H-he implied Minato-sensei wouldn't mean for it to, but it would happen, because he wouldn't realize how cruel people could be until it was too late."
Fugaku grunted, making a 'hn' sound. "Sounds like Minato to a 't'. Lord Jiraiya taught him well, but sheltered him too much."
"Fugaku." Mikoto Uchiha scolded, digging an elbow into his side.
Rin clenched her shaking fists, and ignored Kushina's arms wrapped around her. If she left to see Kakashi, and Obito died, she'd never forgive herself. But if she tried to see Obito, and Kakashi died, she'd never forgive herself either. So she stayed put. She stared at her shaking hands and the fresh clean clothes she was wearing. She could still see the blood stains from past days outfits on them. She wondered just how bad things could get. 'Was this why Lady Tsunade left Konoha?'
A nurse knelt down in front of her. And looked up at her. She had bright turquoise eyes and deeply tanned skin. Her light purple hair was streaked with white. "Hello there." She sang.
Rin blinked. She forced her mind to focus. "H-hello Fara-san."
Fara set a plate of light food and drink onto her lap. She didn't leave until Rin started eating.
Kakashi Hatake did not fathom returning to his senses even after Minato's friend Kushina Uzumaki got the idea to place Kakashi in his own house. Nurses and doctors had no clue how to wake him from his stupor, and Konoha had a lot to lose if someone as useful as Kakashi fell as well. So they brought him back to his house, hooked to all sorts of machines and the things that could be moved with him.
Kushina protested Kakashi living in the same house that his father killed himself in, by himself at that, but now wasn't the time to do more than comment on it. They placed him in his bed, and waited. Days passed with no change to Kakashi's Hatake's condition.
In the darkness of an empty room, a small creature with a golden horn, and red eyes, wearing a white and blue wolf pelt climbed through a window with all the stealth Kakashi Hatake had unknowingly showed it. The creature was slow, tired, and drained, but made it to Kakashi Hatake's bed. It placed a small rectangular device on it. On the pillow. Right next to his head. The creature turned back around and climbed back out the window. It completely ignored Pakkun sitting on a chair in the corner next to the IV drip.
In the darkness of the empty room, the item on Kakashi's pillow glowed the faintest blue glow. No longer was it coated with Obito's blood, Rin's tears, and the sweat from Kakashi's fears.
When the morning sun rose, Gai Might stood outside Kakashi Hatake's humble abode. Kakashi was apparently deemed important enough to have his own medic watching over him. He recognized the man from his own times in the hospital. A well todo, no nonsense medical nin named Takashi.
Takashi was a tall man with a large patch of white hair at the front of his head. The patch stood out against the rest of his short brown hair. He was good at what he did, and declared Kakashi couldn't have any visitors. He explained that other people would, but Kakashi was a different breed. He deemed that Kakashi needed time alone with his thoughts to heal and come to terms with what he and his team had been through. He even managed to kick "The Red Hot Habanero" Kushina Uzumaki out. Kushina raised her voice, and her hair and even her fists, but Takashi remained steadfast, calm and firm. When it came to Kakashi Hatake's treatment, Takashi's word was law.
Gai looked back to the bushes, where wide green eyes looked back at him. Kakashi's wayward canine was strange, but it meant no harm. It somehow managed to change forms in a way that wasn't it using a henge technique. It came to Gai's home the night before, weary and drained. Gai took care of it, fed it and cleaned it up, and then watched as it fainted, changing from a bipedal cross between a reptile and a dog, back to a ball of bushy fur and eyes.
It remained in Gai's apartment, sleeping its weariness away. Yet, Gai didn't think that Kakashi's canine would ever ease its woes. Not as long as Kakashi was in his current condition. Gai debated his options. It was in no condition to follow him when he left in the morning, yet it did, trailing behind Gai in the shadows.
Somehow, Takashi recognized he was there, and opened the door. He leaned against the door frame. "You're a stubborn one."
Gai nodded, silent.
Takashi looked at him. Then he jerked his head, and entered, not closing the door behind him. Wordlessly, Gai followed, and closed the door behind him.
"Do you know who I am?" Takashi asked.
"Um…Takashi Shirogane, a medic at Konoha hospital." Gai replied automatically as though he were reading from a cue card in his mind.
"That's what they all say." Takashi laughed, and shook his head. "Shiro, Sakumo and Yori Hatake's personal caretaker and medic."
Gai's jaw dropped. "Y-you treated the Sakumo Hatake?"
"And his wife, Yori. And now his son, Kakashi. I'm sure you've heard of him." Takashi made a mock bow. He led Gai to Kakashi's room, and told him to sit. "Maybe you'll do him some good."
Gai picked up Pakkun and set the pug on his lap. He absentmindedly ran his calloused hands against Pakkun's fur. "Please wake up soon, my dearest rival. We are all here waiting for you."
Neither noticed Kakashi Hatake's hand move.
. . . . .
A/N: There's a theme with Naginata, Hato, Fara and Takashi. I'm missing two people's introductions though, so I'll wait to spoil it.
Yes, the unnamed black haired man is Minato's teammate. Still debating on what to do with him, because he's not supposed to be there.
I believe Yori means "servant of the people". Idk. Was trying to continue the "farm" theme the Hatake's have going on, but I don't know nothing about Japanese names. It is a made up name for the character. I don't know Sakumo's wife/Kakashi's mother. She doesn't even appear in the show.
