Chapter 3
Callie sighed again, when the clinic door opened and yet again Arizona didn't walk in. It had been 2 weeks since she had last been seen, and Callie was sick with worry. Her mind racing with worsening scenarios and in not once was the blonde okay.
She hadn't spoken to Mark since either. She couldn't even look at him she was that mad. To know he had sent her away, told her not to come back infuriated her.
"Torres, you got to stop hanging out here" Bailey ordered entering the clinic. Callie was sat at the desk waiting, as she did when not operating or seeing patients. Just waiting for the blonde to come back.
Suddenly both pagers erupted, 9-11 to the pit. Without delay they both ran to the pit. An ambulance was just pulling up outside.
"Female 20's-30's found beaten on the side of the road, lacerations to her face, defensive wounds to her arms and torso. Appears to have broken ribs to left side, and deep abdominal bruising, also some deformity to her left wrist. Hypotensive and tachycardic on scene, responding to pain" the EMT handed over. Callie threw the door open. Finding Arizona lying there, covered in bruises and blood, her eyes closed.
"Arizona" Callie muttered, feeling both relief that she knew the blonde was alive but concern at just how injured she was, she was rewarded with a slight moan,
"Arizona, it's okay, you are safe now," Callie reassured gently brushing her hair out of her face.
"Trauma 1" Bailey ordered as Owen and Meredith joined them. Alex was in trauma 1, ready too. They quickly removed her clothes, Alex taking blood and getting an IV, Callie taking the X-rays while Bailey scanned her abdomen, and Meredith checked her pupils and put the monitoring on. Owen took the lead standing at the edge of the bed.
"3 broken ribs and a displaced wrist. I can pull it" Callie diagnosed,
"Free fluid in the abdomen, we need an OR" Bailey noted.
"Okay, Karev book us an OR" Owen ordered.
"And page Sloan" Callie added, at everyone's confused looks she continued, "he started this, he drove her away, he needs to close so she doesn't have any scars" Callie insisted. She was still mad at him for sending her away, for not insisting she came back instead making it sound like she was a burden. Now the blonde was back and in a bad way Callie wanted Mark here, to see for himself the damage he had done.
Then they were off to the elevator and to OR 2 where the team was waiting. As the team scrubbed in the well-prepared team sedated, intubated, and prepped the areas that would need surgery.
Bailey entered the room, allowing Meredith to take the other side, Owen did the same with Alex, while Callie stood back.
"This is going to be dirty and fast; we don't know where the bleeding is coming from as we didn't have time for a CT, I'm going to need you to suction," Bailey ordered Meredith,
"Karev retract, we are going to need the best view we can get" Owen ordered. Miranda held the scalpel cutting open her abdomen, as predicted the blood poured out of her abdomen. Alex retracted opening up the surgical field while Owen and Bailey worked to try clamp off the bleeders.
"I got it, spleen" Bailey announced, "Its shredded, we need to remove it".
"Clamp" Owen ordered, grabbing the splenic artery, the field cleared. Bailey began the process of removing the spleen,
"Liver lac" Owen noticed, "I can fix it, Karev get in here" he ordered. They finished and were about to close when Mark arrived,
"This is why you don't tell a domestic violence victim they're a bother" Callie lectured. To his credit Mark looked guilty and very sorry.
"Let me close" he offered, neatly stitching the large wound closed trying to make sure the scar would be as small as possible.
Callie stood watching waiting for them to finish, once the abdomen was closed, she went over quickly pulling the wrist, and setting the cast, while Mark tidied her face.
"Let's get her to recovery" Miranda suggested, Callie took Arizona's hand escorting her out, swearing this would be the last time she got hurt.
They quickly settled her in the ICU, Callie taking residency on the chair next to the bed,
"Torres, she'll be asleep for a bit" Bailey warned,
"I know, but I want her to know she isn't alone" Callie replied, stubbornly not moving. "We let her down once, I want to make sure she doesn't get let down again." Callie insisted,
"Callie, I'm sorry" Mark apologised, Callie ignored him, it had been working so far. "Callie you're going to have to talk to me sometime" he begged, again Callie ignored him, Mark sighed, he could only hope she'd be more forgiving once blondie woke up.
"We'll ease up the sedation soon" Bailey suggested. "Wake her up".
"Okay" Callie replied, not moving from her spot. Nothing could tear her away from the blonde. For some reason she felt drawn to her,
"Is it too late to tell you not to get attached?" Miranda questioned. Callie gave an embarrassed shrug,
"I'll get Karev to take over the Ortho part," Callie decided, that would end most of the objections, that way she could be there to support her patient more emotionally.
"I don't care, if the chief has his way she'll be working here soon" Miranda shrugged,
"What?"
"Since Kendrick died and Stark started the Peds department has deteriorated. Apparently, Robbins was first in her class at Hopkins, as well as chief intern, she basically ran the Peds department even as a resident. He wants her for Peds here" Bailey explained,
"That would be great" Callie replied, if Arizona was working here then she would see her every day, know she was safe.
"We just have to find out why she left Hopkins, why she gave up everything and moved here. I hope you are up for it" Bailey said quickly making her way out of the room. Callie sighed, she had been played still it was exciting the thought that the beautiful and apparently talented doctor could still be working at Seattle Grace.
Callie took a moment, picturing her future with the blonde, which was mad, as she'd never shown an interest, other than jokingly asking her out, and was obviously in a relationship.
A slight movement from the bed drew Callie's attention away from her thoughts,
"Arizona?" She checked "Arizona" she repeated, and this time was rewarded with beautiful blue eyes.
"Dr Torres" Arizona said instantly recognising the brunette next to her, she tried to take deep breaths to calm her racing heart wincing as it jarred her chest, and she felt a severe pain.
"Easy, you broke your ribs" Callie informed her pressing the on-demand button on the PCA, watching as she relaxed slightly.
"They nearly killed you, 3 broken ribs, a concussion, a pneumothorax, ruptured spleen, liver lac, a broken displaced radius and ulna fracture" Callie recited.
"It was an accident" Arizona protested,
"You have a boot print on your abdomen, next to your surgical scar where myself and my colleagues just spent 4 hours saving your life and a drain hanging out to inflate your lungs" Callie snapped, "Did he accidentally tread on you, after he kicked you so hard, he broke your ribs?" She asked rhetorically.
"It wasn't like that, it isn't his fault" Arizona protested, as a nurse came in,
"Dr Robbins, I'm sorry to interrupt but there is a man here, he says he is your husband" the nurse said wincing slightly at Callie's death glare,
"Can he come in?" Arizona asked excitedly.
"Sure" Callie replied unable to say no to her patient having no good reason to, Arizona had told her nothing about how she was hurt, but she had also said she wasn't married.
A good-looking man walked in, short brown cropped hair, he was wearing a marine uniform, that would explain the boot print Callie figured.
"Yuma, I am so sorry" he apologized, carefully going over and hugging Arizona,
"It's not you that has to be sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry" Arizona apologized crying, then wincing as it jarred her ribs. Callie fought back the retorted, positive the blond had nothing to be sorry for. She was the one who had nearly died, she was the one who had had hours of complex surgery. Biting her lip Callie stood
"I'll be back" she threatened glaring at Arizona's husband, storming out the room. Trying not to read too much into it when he closed the door after her.
"Karev. Watch him, if he lays so much as a finger on her, you have my permission to break him" Callie said firmly, Alex nodded watching like a hawk through the window.
"Where are you going?" Meredith asked Callie,
"Outside, I need some air" Callie replied, she couldn't do it, couldn't sit there, and watch Arizona make all nicey nice with her husband, not after seeing what he had done to her. If she stayed, she knew she would do something she would regret.
Any guesses on who the husband is? Arizona POV coming soon!
