So I watched this movie when it came out back in 2021 and I just absolutely adored Florence and Madeleine. Recently, I rewtached it and these two have been living rent free in my head. So, here's a series of oneshots based on their time in the library. Each chapter will be separate (unless specified otherwise). Since little is really known about the librarians, any filler details are just any headcannons I have about them.
Enjoy~
"I think she's trying to kill me." Scarlet groaned as she (not so gracefully) flopped herself down on the kitchen chair. Every part of her body hurt. She could feel her muscles twitching under her skin. Stretching herself out, she felt the soreness setting in.
Anna May looked up from the muzzle of the gun in her hand. "Who?"
"Florence." Scarlet groaned.
Anna May couldn't help the smirk that crept along her face. The disheveled state of their newest member made more sense now.
Putting down the piece of her gun, and the cleaning rag, the blue clad woman wandered away from the table and over to the fridge. Reaching in, she plucked two bottles of beer off her designated shelf. Popping the caps off she deposited one in front of the brunette on her way back to her seat. "You're the one who wanted to learn."
Scarlet couldn't disagree with her. It'd been a month since the librarians took her in, as a favor from her late husband. The first three days were spent grieving. Afterwards, though, she'd sought out Anna May requesting that they teach her to fight. Lifting her head from the table, she took a swig of the beer. "Is there a way to get her to hold back at all?"
"Oh, she did. You're still walking." Anna May chuckled, returning to her spot at the table. "I can always set you up to train with Madeleine, if you'd prefer that."
Scarlet most certainly did not prefer that.
She'd made the mistake of underestimating Madeleine's fighting abilities once.
And it damn sure it wouldn't happen again.
"I'll pass." Scarlet muttered without missing a beat. A chill ran down her spine as she remembered their 'little sparing' match. She still remembered the way Madeleine's whole demeanor changed in a single second. That second of distraction was all it'd taken for Scarlet to end up pinned, face down on the mat.
But that didn't mean that she was any better off training with Florence. Florence's hand-to-hand training was much different than any she'd seen before. The woman's style was a mix of various martial arts. Some, she was able to recognize. The others, well Scarlet was fairly certain that she just made them up as she went.
The two fell into a comfortable silence. Scarlet let her gaze travel over to the dark-skinned woman, who'd returned to cleaning the parts of the gun on the table. Scarlet knew there was no way to ever repay the Librarians for their kindness. They'd willingly opened their home to a grieving widow and her child. They'd given her a safe space when she needed it the most. And for that, she was truly grateful.
Snapping the last part of the newly cleaned gun in place, Anna May sat it on the coffee table in front of her. "Hey, I'm gonna go watch a movie. Want to join?"
"Uh." Scarlet glanced up at the clock on the wall. Confirming she still had plenty of time before she need to go to sleep, she nodded. "Sure."
Standing up, Scarlet followed Anna May out of the kitchen and into their shared living room.
Anna May scooped the remote off the coffee table. She watched as Scarlet started to sit in the single overstuffed chair. "Don't sit there." She warned as she took her own spot on the right side of the couch.
"Why?"
"That's Florence's chair."
"Okay?"
"She has a two-foot rule. Everyone needs to be at least two feet away from her. Something about wanting to be crowded." Anna May said with a shrug. Years ago, Florence explained that in her younger years, her parents had sent her away to a military academy. In her time there, personal space was hard to come by. Anna May didn't push the issue. She knew all too well (with taking care of her younger siblings) the value of personal space. "How about Star Trek?"
"I've never seen it."
"What?!" Anna May practically yelled. "It's a classic!"
"You're not missing much." Florence said evenly as she strolled into the living room. Just as Anna May warned, Florence sat herself down in the overstuffed chair.
Anna May resisted the urge to roll her eyes. She knew full well that neither of her fellow librarians shared her love of the sci-fi universe. "What's your idea then?"
Florence only shrugged in response. Truthfully, she wasn't really interested in whatever movie the two decided on. She hasn't planned on watching it anyway. Opening the drawer on the end table beside her, Florence pulled out the newest book that Madeleine had recommended.
With a roll of her eyes, Anna May turned her attention back to Scarlet, waiting for an answer.
"Okay?"
"Star Trek it is."
Movement pulled Scarlet's attention away from the television screen.
Madeleine, who must have just finished locking up the library for the night, walked into the living room. Figuring that she would want to take the empty space between herself and Anna May, Scarlet shifted to make more room for the woman.
What she wasn't prepared for, though, was for Madeleine to walk right past the couch and make a beeline for Florence.
Scarlet watched as Madeleine's knees found the small space on either side of Florence's thighs as she settled herself on the other woman's lap. Florence didn't even take her eyes off the book as she wound her free hand around the brunette's back. Madeleine rested her head on Florence's shoulder, nuzzling into the curve of her neck. Florence leaned closer to Madeleine's ear, whispering something to her.
Madeleine nodded but didn't reply.
It didn't take long for Madeleine's breathing to steady out. As soon as it did, Florence finally put her book down. Gently pulling off Madeleine's glasses, she placed them on the stand beside her. She moved to her hair next, pulling out the two pins and hair clip. Once she was content with her work, she returned to her book.
Scarlet wanted to give the pair their privacy, but she just couldn't help but let her eyes drift over to them. She could see Florence gently tracing her fingers along Madeleine's spine. Every so often she'd pepper a kiss to her forehead.
It was strange seeing Florence in this way. Not once in her short time had she ever seen Florence be so gentle with anyone.
As the movie's credits began to roll, Florence lifted her cheek from Madeleine's head.
"Either of you up to watch the sequel?" Anna May asked as she looked from Florence to Scarlet. She knew all too well that the brunette in Florence's lap would be fast asleep.
"No. I'm taking this one to bed." Florence announced. Effortlessly, she stood up, bringing the still sleeping Madeleine with her. "Goodnight."
"Night." Anna May called back. Feeling the eyes burning into the back of her skull, she refocused on Scarlett. "What?"
Scarlet raised an eyebrow. "I thought you said Florence didn't like to be crowded."
"She doesn't." Anna May said with a shrug. "Madeleine's just an exception."
