It took Ianto several long minutes to identify what had dragged him from his fitful sleep: a sound, like someone rummaging about in the main room of the cramped flat he'd rented on his arrival in Cardiff. He slid out of the sleeping bag on the floor and made his way cautiously towards the bedroom door, glancing briefly at the window as he went. Through a gap in the shabby curtains he could see it was still night.

He cracked the door open, wondering if he was about to confront a burglar. Not that there was anything here worth stealing. Most of what he'd brought with him from London was packed away in a storage locker; he'd paid a year's rent in advance, hoping Lisa would be cured long before then. The thought sent a sharp pang of grief through him, and he gritted his teeth as he peered through the narrow gap, then pulled the door wide as he recognised the intruder.

"Planning to kill me and make it look like a robbery gone wrong?"

Jack turned. "Wanted to make sure you were okay."

"Why would you even care?"

"Because someone needs to. Looks like I'm all you've got."
