Hi everyone this is a rewrite of a story I have had in my head since I was younger, now that I am older I hope I can finally do it some justice. I hope you enjoy it please let me know what you think. -Dayin
When the shadows reclaimed the earth as their own; mere mortal man could do nothing but sit and watch. The human race who had always been quick to strike down that which they did not understand was powerless when faced with being of superior mental and physical ability who had managed to infiltrate all levels of government and leadership like a fungus so even the powerful weapons the Humans had developed were inaccessible and useless to them now. It was a war the vampires had won before the humans even knew they were fighting.
This day was written into history as the day of shadows as all who were hiding in the darkness came forth into the light.
Of course some humans had attempted to fight back regardless, Americans had always been so fond of their guns and had ached for the excuse to use them, however that too was quickly put to rest when the bullets began ricocheting off of their nearly impenetrable skin.
With most of the fighting squelched the overtake of base infrastructure followed soon after. With select vampires assuming the roles of something akin to a government on every continent in order to fulfil the purpose of their exposure . Government officials were chosen based on the vampire's age, skill set and record in order to avoid confusion or corruption settling in during the vulnerable times. Vampires were already naturally territorial creatures and already had a base understanding over who owned certain areas of land. All the world's vampiric governments then had to report to the Volturi, the original leaders of the vampires. Vampires who had been nomadic for years finally were comfortable enough to settle and create homes for themselves.
The humans themselves began their own restructuring as religion and the leadership hierarchy collapsed as most of life's great philosophical questions were answered and made all the more confusing with the revelation of immortality as a possibility. Religions, teachings and most institutions of learning, government and medicine were broken down and reinvented to accommodate the new world.
The Volturi had not actually wanted to resort to exposing their species, in fact it was a secret they had killed many to protect. But the survival of the species had required them to alter these views. When their scientists found data supporting the fact that their race was slowly dying out and more vampires were dying then they were being created. They knew that if this trend continued their species would become entirely extinct.
This creation decline was due to the lack of new vampires being born or created. Vampires could not just be created on a whim with just a bite like in the myths. In fact there were actually only two circumstances in which a vampire could be created. The first was through the turning. This is what had inspired the traditions and horror stories humans had been so obsessed with for years, but truly the process was a lot more intricate and only applied to a very small select group of humans.
This select group was composed of humans who were what vampires called mates. The term was taken from the human phrasing of soul mates but really they were so much more. The key to what made mates so special began in their blood and very DNA. Blood had always been important to vampires but the blood of human mates was by far the most precious. Containing an enzyme encoded with genes that made the human receptive to vampire venom it acted as an anchor allowing the venom to take hold in order for the human to be turned. The enzyme was unique to every mate and only worked when in combination with a similar enzyme in their vampire mates venom.
The second way a vampire could be created was through birth, this was actually the way that most vampires had come to exist. They were born just like humans, tiny perfect infants who simply favoured blood over food. However, they could only be born to a vampire and their true mate. The enzymes within the mate's blood were also required to be present in order for conception to take place and they are what made it possible for them to reproduce.
With mates being necessary for any new creation of vampires the lack of mates began to pose a dangerous problem. Despite vampires being immortal, human mates were not. Until they were turned human mates had the exact same lifespan and mortality rate of any average human. This meant that vampires would have to find their mate within the short time frame of a human's lifespan when their mate could be born at any time and anywhere in the world. If a vampire were unable to find their mate within that time frame not only would no new vampires be born or made but the vampire would die of heartbreak shortly after their mate had passed.
This was the reality that the Volturi were no longer willing to accept. Correction of this crisis would require access to hospitals, schools and governmental departments and implementation of mate tracking and finding technologies that were far beyond a few well placed spies. And so the decision was made that something had to be done and the plan was set in place for vampires to make themselves known and take their logical place as the dominant species on earth.
After the new government was firmly in place the next stage was to tackle the problem of making sure vampire mates were able to be found, protected and matched to their vampire mate. A problem solved by a genetic test the scientists had been working on. This test was able to confirm if a human was a mate and catalogue their DNA so mated pairs could be matched. They called this system the International Mate Database or the IMD for short.
The IMD held a register of every mate less vampire's DNA and register systems were then placed in all hospitals and medical venues where humans were treated. It was made a requirement for every human to provide a DNA sample in order to check if they were a mate. Once all currently alive human mates had been found a procedure was implemented to ensure that every new baby be checked and registered on the day they were born.
Once a mate was found they would be logged into the IMD and their parents would be informed and given classes on how to best care for and raise their child. There were strict rules that dictated the way mates were to be raised in order to ensure they grew up healthy and protected until their 18th birthday when their mate would be allowed to come and collect them. Until that point the vampire would not be allowed to see their mate as their protective instincts could place the people around their mate in danger.
The mate bond was unbreakable and stronger than any other. A vampire's mate would be the only person the vampire was able to truly love as they were made to be a perfect genetic match. To a vampire their mate was a lifeline who made their very existence worthwhile. This unfortunately also made mates a weakness for vampires. It was all too easy to use a mate's safety to bait or blackmail a vampire and as a result many laws and measures were put in place to prevent this from happening. Any harm to a vampire's mate was seen as the most heinous crime and was punishable by death.
At first many humans attempted to resist the changes that were being implemented into their lives. Seeing all vampires as predators to be feared and avoided. In order to minimise the humans fear and resistance of their new vampire leaders, the Volturi made it illegal for vampires to kill humans for feeding purposes. Instead all criminals and human soldiers were required to donate blood as part of their duties and sentencing and other humans were encouraged to donate blood as often as was safe and healthy. This combined with the synthetic blood substitute the scientists had been working on was more than enough to sustain all the vampires and most humans were content with the compromise it created now that vampires were not generally a threat to them.
Now that fifty years had passed and the changes had been in place for almost two generations, not many tried to resist anymore. For many, life under the rule of vampires was all they had ever known. And the few that remembered life before the vampires found that the world had become far better with them in change. There was no homelessness or starvation and pollution was at an all time low and this world seemed nearly as perfect as those that now ruled it.
Just a small note all reviews and constructive criticism are appreciated. Please let me know what you think of the story so far I have the next few chapters already mostly done I just want to finish editing them and then I will post them up. Any grammar or spelling mistakes I will do my best to find and fix however I am dyslexic and I don't have a beta reader so some mistakes go unnoticed. I wrote this as a fanfic when I was younger and stopped due to everyone hating my grammar but this was before knowing I was dyslexic and now I have hopefully improved a bit.-Dayout
