Lian Yu, two days after Oliver's arrival
Mid-Morning
On the shore, Oliver placed various stacks of wood together, creating a large wooden structure, even larger than the one he had used three years earlier to draw the attention of Anthony Ivo.
After a day of lamenting his bad luck, Oliver had dragged whatever supplies he could find from the wreckage of the plane. While none of his arrows had unfortunately survived, his bow miraculously had. Realizing he couldn't just survive on this island alone with no hope of getting off, Oliver had decided to make a signal in case anyone ever managed to sail of fly near here again.
Finishing, Oliver stepped back, running a hand across his face. He needed a shave, he mused. It had been some time since he'd trimmed his beard, and his hair was now starting to stretch passed his shoulders. He'd look like a wild man by the time he got off this island, Oliver thought with a dry grin.
Beginning to walk back towards the woods, Oliver paused as he saw something. Kneeling down, Oliver picked it up, staring at Slade's old mask with a hint of regret and dread.
It must have washed up on shore after the Amazo went down, Oliver mused. Oliver stared at it for a long moment, wondering if it was Slade haunting him from beyond the grave. Looking over, Oliver saw a large stick. No, a post, he realized. Looking back down at the mask, he got an idea.
Picking up the post, Oliver stuck it into the ground before placing the mask on it. Then, pulling out an arrow (one of Shado's he had found at the Fuselage) he stuck it through one of the eye holes. The eye he had stabbed when he had killed Slade three years ago.
Oliver stared at the mask for a moment. It was perhaps not as grand a memorial that the man who had helped him survive on this island deserved, but it was all had to give. Oliver then turned, walking back into the forest.
Walking up the side of the mountain that he and Slade had once viewed the Amazo attack the island, Oliver reached the top and took out a pair of binoculars he had taken the fuselage. Sitting down, he knew for the moment, all he could do was wait.
Xavier's School from the Gifted
Same time
"You sure about this?" Natasha asked as Clint pulled the car up to the front of the school.
In the back, Fury, who had changed into a pair of jeans, a leather jacket and sun glasses, lowered his glasses slightly so he could look Natasha in the eye.
"Cerebro is able to locate both humans and mutants. If anyone can find Oliver, its Charles," Fury assured her.
"If it still works," Clint muttered.
The three of them got out of the car, beginning to make their way towards the front gate but, before they could buzz in, the gates opened, to their surprise.
"Looks like someone already knows we're here," Fury said with a grin.
The three of them made their way up to the front door and Clint moved to ring the doorbell when the doors opened by themselves.
"They're just messing with us now," Clint muttered and Natasha patted his shoulder.
"There, there Hawkeye. It'll all be over soon," Natasha said in mock comfort.
Clint rolled his eyes before the three entered. Fury closed the door behind him as they saw Charles, in his chair, flanked by Ororo and Logan.
"Chuck," Fury said as they walked over.
"It is good to see you, my old friend. I was happy to learn the reports of your demise were false," Charles said as he and Fury shook hands.
"Sorry about that, but I had to make the people after me think I was dead. I wasn't sure who to trust," Fury explained as they dropped hands.
"Turns out, you had good reason for that," Logan muttered and Fury looked over at him, nodding.
"I know what you are here to ask. We should go speak in my office," Charles said and Fury nodded.
Not long after, the six of them stood in Charles' office.
"It's quite a storm you've weathered," Ororo noted and Clint chuckled.
"You don't know the half of it," Clint said in dark amusement.
"You told me Cerebro could find both mutants and humans. Could it find Oliver, wherever he is?" Fury inquired.
"You so sure Queen isn't Hydra?" Logan interjected before Charles could answer and got three dark looks. "Just asking."
"You met him, what do you think?" Clint challenged.
"Unlikely, but not impossible," Logan shrugged.
"We found him on a deserted island, half drowned to death. He was unconscious for over a week, he almost died. If he was Hydra, there were far easier ways to get him into SHIELD," Natasha said coolly.
"I agree. Oliver Queen's mind was surprisingly easy to read, he broadcasts his thoughts very loudly. It is very unlikely he was Hydra. I'm much more concerned about Agent Dragon," Charles said and the former SHIELD agents looked over at him. "His thoughts were…guarded. He practiced many techniques I know to be used to try and prevent a telepath from reading a mind."
"Which is why we came to you. Oliver was with Dragon when Hydra came out into the open. Queen Consolidated has more than a few projects Hydra would be interested in, and Oliver makes the perfect bargaining chip. So, can you find him?" Fury repeated.
"Perhaps if Cerebro was operational. But William Stryker took many key components when making his own, it will be months before I have it up and running again," Charles said regretfully.
"Maybe not," Natasha said and the three X-Men looked over at her. "I have Tony Stark on speed dial; he can get whatever materials you need in days. What do you need?"
Three days later, after Tony had shipped the materials needed, Clint, Logan, Natasha and Fury had rebuilt the system with directions from Charles. Currently, Charles put on his helmet and Fury, Natasha and Clint looked around as they saw all the white light in the shape of people in the chamber.
"Those all the humans?" Clint asked.
"Yes. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm trying to locate your friend," Charles said and they could hear the smile in his voice without seeing his face.
"Can you?" Natasha inquired.
"It's not as easy as locating mutants, but I should be able to. As I've read his mind once before, that makes it a little easier to single out. Now, if you don't mind, I need to focus," Charles said.
No further words were said for a couple minutes as Charles scanned the minds of humans worldwide in order to find Oliver. Finally Charles spoke up.
"He's on an island in the North China Sea," Charles said and the three humans exchanged stunned looks.
"Lian Yu," Natasha breathed.
"Why the Hell would Hydra take him there?" Clint wondered in disbelief.
"We can ask him when we find him," Fury said before glancing at Charles. "Thank you for this."
"When I needed help, you came to my aid without hesitation. I am merely repaying the favor my friend. We'll gather Logan and Storm and take my plane," Charles said as he removed the helmet.
Lian Yu, next day
Morning
Oliver was still on the mountain, waiting. He had sat here every day, only leaving to get food or to relieve himself. Hearing something, Oliver looked up, using his binoculars. To his shock, he saw a plane heading towards the island.
Getting up, Oliver ran. It was too far away for him to see the make or model, but for all he knew, it was Hydra, coming to make sure that Oliver was ready to be ransom.
After the X-Jet had landed, setting down somewhere that it could be covered by the trees, Fury, Clint and Natasha were the first ones off, followed by Logan before, finally, Ororo wheeled Charles down.
"Some place Queen found himself in," Logan muttered.
"It's the island he was stranded on before we found him. Although why Hydra would take him here is anyone's guess," Clint muttered before raising his voice. "Oliver! Oliver, you here!? Oliver!"
There was no response as Charles closed his eyes, using his powers to scan the island.
"He is here," Charles said as he opened his eyes. "He is close. He is…wary to trust anyone."
"That's going around," Natasha noted.
Oliver was running through the woods, trying to get to the fuselage, hoping to get more weapons when a voice spoke to him.
'Oliver,' Oliver looked around wildly at the sound of the voice. "You need not worry. It's Professor Xavier. We've come to take you off this island, to take you home.'
Oliver didn't respond for a moment, wondering if he was going mad.
'You're not mad, Oliver. I understand that you find it difficult to trust anyone in the moment, given what happened with Hydra. But trust that you can trust me. No one on this island means you any harm.'
"Maybe one of us should go look for him?" Clint suggested.
"Oliver knows this island like the back of his hand. If he doesn't want to be found, he won't be," Natasha pointed out.
"I think you'll find that won't be necessary," Charles said with a smile.
They all looked towards him with confusion before Logan sniffed the air and turned towards a tree near where they had landed. Moments later, Oliver, with a knife in hand, emerged from behind the tree.
"Oliver," Clint said in relief before noticing the knife. "You all right kid?"
"Yeah. You?" Oliver asked, eying them all warily, like he was about to be attacked.
"Yeah, we're all fine," Fury said and Oliver looked at him.
"Heard you were dead," he noted.
"As Mark Twain would say, the rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated. Didn't know who to trust. Judging by that knife, I'm guessing you don't either," Fury noted.
"We're not here to hurt you Oliver," Natasha said, walking up to him cautiously. "We came to find you, to bring you home."
After a moment, Oliver looked over at Charles, who merely smiled at him. Whatever seemed to pass between them caused Oliver to nod before ge held out the knife for Natasha. She took it and he sighed.
"I can't go home. Not yet."
Later, the group sat near the mountain Oliver had been sitting on, Natasha reading The List as Oliver explained about it.
"My father told me he had failed the city, and he wasn't the only one. I didn't understand what he had meant at the time, not until I came back to Starling City. I found a video recording he had left for me, explaining that book. He said he did something terrible and made alliances with terrible people," Oliver explained.
"And this book is filled with all their names," Logan noted as he looked at the book and Oliver nodded.
"I don't regret what I've done with SHIELD, but being back here, finding that book…it's made me realize I've been putting off keeping my promise. Starling City is full of Kovars and Strykers who abuse their power by stepping on other people's throats. I have to go back. I have to go home," Oliver said and it was silent for a long moment.
"You remind me so much of Erik when I first met him," Charles said and Oliver looked at him in disbelief. "He was so willing to protect mutants from the humans who wished to do them harm. Unfortunately, he lost himself in the fight, trading his soul for what he saw as protecting our kind from yours. It turned him into the man he is now."
"So you're saying don't go back then?" Oliver asked blankly.
"What I am saying is, if you do go back, don't do it on your own, you will only lose yourself if you do," Charles advised.
"Chuck's right, as he usually is. You know I don't trust anyone. But I surround myself with people who I know have the same mission I do," Fury added.
"So build my own Avengers, is what you're saying?" Oliver asked blankly.
"Hey, didn't work out so bad for us," Clint shrugged.
"While this is all very enlightening, I don't think Oliver can just show up in Starling City," Ororo interjected.
"She's right. There'll be questions about where I've been the last five years. It'll be much simpler if I'm just a castaway. Which I guess makes me lucky that Dragon chose to bring me here of all places," Oliver said with a look around.
"I believe I have a solution to that, Mr. Queen," Charles said and they all looked over at him. "About twenty miles from here, I can sense the thoughts of two fishermen. If I use my powers, I can have them sail towards here."
"You can do that?" Oliver asked in surprise and Charles smiled.
"I can do a great many things. I do not usually use my powers in this way, but considering the circumstances, I will make an exception," Charles said with a smile.
"Thank. Thank all of you," Oliver said, looking around at them. "Thank you for all you've done for me. I would not have survived the last three years without you."
"You already had the will power to survive. We just gave you the tools," Natasha assured him.
"So, looks like this is goodbye," Clint noted.
"Looks like it," Oliver said and paused. "If you see Bobbi again…could you tell her something for me?"
"What do you want to tell her?" Clint asked and Oliver took a moment to put his thoughts in order.
"I want you to tell her…that I love her too, but I have to go home now. I have a promise to keep."
"Yeah…yeah, we'll tell her," Natasha said gently, closing the book and handing it back to Oliver. "Now, something tells me it you need to get ready."
"One last thing though," Fury said and Oliver turned to him. "Most of the responsibilities that were SHIELD jurisdiction have been turned over to ARGUS since SHIELD fell."
"And you didn't like ARGUS," Oliver noted and Fury grimaced.
"It's not that I don't like ARGUS. I don't trust the woman in charge of it: Amanda Waller. You remember that rogue government official that was behind Edward Freys?" Fury asked and Oliver stared at him in disbelief.
"That was her?"
"No. But it was an ARGUS agent and I've never been convinced that it wasn't Waller who was behind that. It's her style, she's an 'ends justify the means' type of person. She'd happily wipe out a whole town of people without batting an eye if she thought it served the greater good. If you ever cross her path, don't trust her," Fury warned him and Oliver nodded.
"I won't. Thank you, Sir," Oliver said with a nod.
"You don't have call me that anymore. You don't work for me anymore," Fury pointed out.
"I know, Sir," Oliver said with a slight smile and Fury smirked.
"For what it's worth, out of all the agents I've had working for me…you were one of a kind," Fury told Oliver.
Later that day, Oliver climbed up the side of a mountain before pulling himself over the side. Looking out over the island, he saw the fishermen near the island, just as Charles had said. Running back into the woods, he pulled at his bundle of supplies, unwrapping it to reveal his bow and last arrow.
Stabbing a knife into a nearby rock, he picked up both the bow and the tar-covered eye. Using the knife, he lit the arrow on fire, notched it and took aim. Firing the arrow at the pile of wood he had made days earlier, Oliver watched, satisfied, as it exploded, drawing the attention of the fishermen. Oliver almost smiled as he saw the boat sail back towards the shore.
Oliver made his way down the mountain, towards the shore as the boat began heading towards it. Oliver walked over to the spot where his signal had been as the fishermen reached the shore, walking past his memorial to Slade and reaching him. Oliver fell down to his knees, pulling back his hood and looking up at the fishermen.
"My name is Oliver Queen…and I would really like to go home now."
Not long after, the group on the island watched as the boat sailed away, taking Oliver on his journey back home.
"Think we'll ever see him again? "Clint asked and Fury smirked.
"If there's one thing I've learned in this life, it's that sometimes we cross paths with people we never expect to see again," Fury noted amused. "I have a feeling we'll all see Oliver again, some day."
On the boat, Oliver wrapped in and sipping a cup of tea one of the fishermen had brought him, stared at the island, knowing the others were watching him leave. But it was time for him to go home.
"My name is Oliver Queen. After five years of Hell, I am returning home, not the boy who was shipwrecked, but the man who will bring justice to my city. Who will save my city. My time as an Agent of SHIELD may be over, but I will always remember the lessons I learned and trials I endured. They turned me into someone else. They turned me into something else."
And that's that, more or less.
Not to sound conceited, but I think I did a better job showing Oliver's journey than the show (although not hard after year three). For example, no stupid wig and while his hair isn't as long as it was shown to be in the pilot, Oliver still gives the appearance of being stranded on the island for a long stretch of time.
I actually managed to explain everything about his time away except one thing that I couldn't find an excuse to give him: the tattoo he got from Constantine. So that's missing here.
And stay tuned for the mid-credit scene. Like I said, you do not want to miss it.
