She woke up to the sound of the door squeaking open. Bolting up she quickly peered around the room, eyes landing on the woman sitting in the chair beside her bed before noticing Carlisle had returned and was looking at her in surprise over her sudden reaction.
"Its alright Bella you are safe, I apologise for startling you there" he said lifting his hand up in a non-threatening manner.
She calmed her breathing ears turning red in embarrassment, as she turned to look at the woman sitting next to her. And moving to lay back down on the bed as the pain in her stomach roared to life aggravated by her movements.
"Hello dear, it's lovely to meet you though I do wish it was under better circumstances." She said kindly while offering out her hand for her to shake.
"It's nice to meet you too, miss..?" she questioned waiting for the nurse's name to be provided.
"Oh yes of course sorry sweetie I'm nurse Amanda-Lee but you can just call me Amy. Dr Cullen thought you'd be more comfortable with another woman here to keep you company" she explained sitting down in the chair nearest the bed.
"I have the sonogram machine here Bella. If you are happy for us to continue I would rather not wait too long on these tests" Carlisle said gesturing to the machine.
"Okay" she said, voice shaking with uncertainty.
"I am just going to bring the machine over and Amy can get you ready" he said while rolling the machine closer to her.
Amy quickly helped her to fully lay back and got the gel ready for her stomach. As the gel made contact with her abdomen she let out a small hiss of breath at the cold sensation.
"Sorry about that" the nurse apologies with a small chuckle, clearly used to that reaction in regards
"It's okay," she replied, getting used to the gel.
"Alright, I am just going to place this scanner on your stomach to see if I can see the source of your ailment" He explained while lifting the scanner over to her stomach rotating it around each area.
He reached the side of her abdomen and she whimpered in pain at the pressure. As the image came into view he held the canner dead still and stopped to pause the scan and capture a few images.
"Alright I am just going to get these printed off to have a closer look and then I will come back to you with the results and action plan" his words seemed to be almost falsely calm as his even tone was betrayed by the look of concern in his eyes.
"Okay" she agreed, feeling with a growing sense of dread that this was not going to be a simple quick visit to the doctor after all.
"Amy will stay with you while I look at these" he explained, gathering the machine and cleaning off the scanner before heading out of the room quickly.
She continued to lay down as the waves of nausea rolled over her, the pain in her stomach all the worse now after being pressed on.
"That's it just try to rest your eyes a bit dear we will have you right as rain in no time" the nurse comforted.
She sat in silence drifting in and out of consciousness until Carlisle entered the room once more.
"Alright Bella, I have reviewed your scans and unfortunately my fears have been confirmed; you have acute appendicitis" he explained seriously looking solemn.
"What" she questioned as the colour drained from her face, she had hoped this was just a terrible cold but now this was going to mean surgery and her mom was surely going to freak out.
"I know this sounds scary but I can assure you it is a very common procedure that very rarely has any complications at all." He did his best to assure her.
"When will the surgery be?" she said, voice shaking as the question left her mouth.
"This isn't something I am keen to wait on. I have an operating room being prepared right now, they will let me know when it is ready and we have a surgeon lined up for you. We are also busy trying to contact your parents but haven't gotten through yet'' he explained.
She could not imagine what her mothers reaction was going to be once she heard she was going to be in surgery. The very thought of that was almost enough to distract from her fear of the surgery itself. However it was only a momentary lapse of fear and then the full reality hit her like a ton of bricks. She had never had anything like this done before, never even so much as having a tooth pulled at the dentist.
"What happens if I don't have the surgery?" she questioned pleadingly already knowing the answer but wanting to hear it confirmed regardless.
"I can't sugar coat this for you so I am just going to be honest Bella, it is not optional for you to refuse this surgery, you would get even sicker than you are now and then die. Your appendix is currently on the verge of rupturing and if that happened it would poison the rest of your body" he explained hurriedly looking worried at the very notion.
"Alright" she said resigned to her fate.
"For right now we are going to get you hooked up to an I.V to start giving you antibiotics and some proper pain relief okay?" He said while Amy got busy preparing and then bringing over a tray with the tools needed to set up the I.V.
Flinching violently at the mention of yet another needle she instinctually attempted to curl into herself and away from the offending equipment. The movement tugged at her side painfully bringing teach to her eyes as pain radiated through her body. Her headache thumping in retaliation.
"I know you are scared and I am so sorry that I am not able to slow things down for you to be ready, time is of the essence right now and we simply can not afford to let this progress. However, I assure you that all we want to do is help you and we will make everything as painless as possible" He comforted, surprising her when it at least partly worked.
She slowly uncurled and looked at the faces of the doctor and nurse before her. Their eyes both held a deep worry and regret over her being pushed into this situation. However neither expression held room for argument and she knew there would be no way of getting out of this.
"Can you please do it Carlisle?" She said trusting him to do it as painlessly as it had been when he drew her blood earlier.
Never had she thought that she would actually ask a vampire for help over a human, especially not for medical help of any kind. But there was just something about Carlisle that made it hard to be afraid of him, he had a personality that made it near impossible to imagine him wanting to hurt a fly never mind a human.
"Of course" He said, relieved at their cooperation. He quickly took the tray and tools from Amy and got to work. Within a few moments the IV was set up and flowing freely into her arm.
"I am going to add in some pain medicine now and something to help keep you a bit calmer so hopefully that should help while we wait for the OR to be ready," as he spoke he added the aforementioned medicine from a brown glass bottle into the IV port "it is likely this will make you a bit drowsy so please don't worry if you fall asleep either Amy or I will be with you at all times." He explained.
"Okay" she said in a small voice laying back down again now that the adrenalin from her fear over the needle was subsiding she was definitely feeling tired again.
There was a loud knock on the door which made her jump in surprise, Carlisle's eyebrows raised in confusion at their new visitor and quickly went over to answer.
A tall man dressed in a fine black suit stood outside, he didn't acknowledge Carlisle at first but instead moved to look around his shoulder and into the room his eyes scanned quickly over everything pausing when they reached her. Once he had done that he turned to face Carlisle fully and said a few words so fast she could not hear them.
As soon as Carlisle had the man's full attention he quickly led him out and away from the room, closing the door firmly behind him as they went with a quick instruction to Amy to monitor her carefully.
Amy was still staring at the space the man had occupied by the door, her face had gone pale and clammy and now she seemed to be the one panicking instead of Bella.
Making a note of this Bella vowed to be very cautious of that man if that was the nurse's reaction to him.
Despite her intrigue the effects of the medicine were soon kicking in and her eyes were dropping dramatically as she fell into a light sleep.
Amy seemed to be taking careful notes on her condition as she rested even going as far as clipping a small heart monitor to her finger. She didn't mind the monitoring devices nearly as much as the needles.
The door opened again and Carlisle and the man stepped back inside.
"Bella this is Alec he is going to be here as your social worker of sorts due to us being unable to reach your parents"
"It is lovely to meet you Bella" He said with a thick Italian accent apparent, he grinned at her his face undeniably perfect and teeth strikingly white, instantly keying her into the fact he too was a vampire.
Her heart rate monitor began to beep in alarm as her panic spiked. Just as she was getting used to the presence of Carlisle another vampire appeared and she was wholly unprepared for it.
The sudden return of adrenaline coupled with the medicine that had just taken effect pushed her over the edge and before she could stop it she was throwing up violently once more. Luckily Carlisle was fast enough to have a bin inform of her in time and he didn't have much of anything left in her system either which was a small mercy.
While she was being sick Carlisle quickly went over to Alec and said something quietly. At that the well dressed vampire promptly turned and immediately left the room.
"I am so sorry Bella, I should have warned you first. I understand that Alec being a vampire was a shock but he means you absolutely no harm. However I do not want you to worry any further and risk worsening your condition so he will not come back in this room unless it's completely necessary, he will just sit in the waiting room across the hall. He is only here to keep you safe in place of your parents not to hurt you in anyway"
The increased distance from the new vampire did help her to calm and the monitor returned to a more reasonable rate. She hated that she was acting like a frightened deer constantly and just longed for this all to be over already.
"Your operating room is just about done being prepared and the OR team will be up to collect you in a few moments. I hope you are alright with me being your surgeon. It was decided that since I was already on your case that it would be best for me to see you through it." He said making her heart beat hard and fast once more at the thought she would be going in soon.
"Yes that's okay thank you" she confirmed, truthfully if she was having surgery she would rather it be Carlisle over a stranger even if she had only known him for a few hours now.
"I am glad, I have some surgery garments they sent up for you here, please change into them and call me back in once you are done" he instructed handing over a blue paper gown and some paper underwear. He then headed out the door and shut it behind him.
Amy got up and came over to help her get changed, weaving her IV through the holes in her shirt carefully so it didn't pull. She then quickly brought over a bag for the clothes Bella had been wearing to be put into.
Once she was done changing Amy went over and opened the door to quietly call Carlisle back inside.
When he entered he was followed by a team of people in blue scrubs who were slowly wheeling in a hospital bed behind them.
"Alright Bella I am just going to have you hop up onto this bed and then we will take you down to the operating room. I will warn that Alec will be following just a bit behind us until we reach the sterile doors, this is just because he is acting as your guardian for the moment" Carlisle explained gently, leading her over to the bed and helping her to get up and settle in.
Once she was comfortably laying down with her IV bag attached to the pole on the bed the team of people began to wheel her out of the room she had occupied for the last few hours.
Just as Carlisle had said upon seeing them moving away Alec rose from his seat in the waiting room and followed a few meters behind them.
They wheeled her along the hallways and the medicine began to take effect. Filling her with a feeling of cold apathy as she was brought closer and closer to the location of her fear. Reaching the large glass doors that separated the surgical wing from the rest of the hospital Carlisle swiped his key card and helped take her into the waiting area.
"Alright Bella you are just going to wait here for a few moments while I go and get scrubbed in then someone will come and collect you and bring you into the operating room." He explained helping to secure her bed into the waiting bay alongside the other patients waiting for their surgeries before leaving to get ready for the procedure.
"Okay" she agreed sleepily, the calming medicine working wonders for her frayed nerves in this moment.
She lay in the waiting bay for a few minutes before a new nurse in blue scrubs returned to her once more. Lifting up the breaks on her bed's wheels and moving her into the operating room where she was helped on to the new theatre table.
"Alright I am going to put this mask on you and have you count back from 10. We will be putting you under while you do that and in this room we have a rule that if you make it to 1 we owe you a prize when you wake up," He said challengingly with a cheeky smile", I must warn we haven't ever had anyone make it but maybe today will be your lucky day" He chuckled as he said this dissipating the small amount of fear that had managed to form despite the medicine.
"Okay" she said with a small giggle as he placed the mask onto her face instructing her to begin her countdown.
"10..9..8….7…6…..5….." with that she was completely out.
And we are out as well! I hope you enjoyed the story please let me know what you thought and give me any ideas you have for where the story is going they always inspire me to write and I love including small pieces of ideas where I can !-Dayout
