Chapter 29
Impregnation.
I spent a long week explaining to my classmates that I was fine despite Edward's hasty departure. For everyone else, he had to follow his family against his will and, luckily, I had found the hiding place of my memories under my floor the night he left. I knew he couldn't leave with the ring he gave me. So I put it back on my finger, in its place, as soon as I had it in my possession. Thanks to that, Jessica was not too difficult to convince and, suddenly, I didn't have to worry about rumours, since Jessica took care of feeding them with the information that I gave her.
That said, a few days after the Cullens left, Jessica started acting weird. She looked sad and didn't expand on the subject. I tried several times to ask her what was going on, but she avoided the subject, which, far from being usual, was on the contrary, very worrying. The dark circles under her eyes indicated that she was having trouble sleeping. I end up sending a message to Paul who told me that Jared had impregnated Kim and that he had broken up with Jessica.
Of course I expected it, but Jessica's reaction shocked me. It was my fault if she had been able to fall in love with Jared so much… I tried to change her mind, but without much success. I even invited her to see a movie in Port Angeles… and she opted for a horror movie… So of course I loved it, because I love horror, but coming from Jessica… let's just say that I had been in the Twilight Zone…
Alice kept me informed almost daily of her movements. She had shown me the first evening through my visions, a message that she had written below my letter. It contained a single word: "Thank you". She and Jasper had separated from the family to research Alice's past on the first night. I learned that Edward hadn't even stayed a week with his parents. He had gone after Victoria the day after our separation. Alice positioned me when she could her progress. I could see that he was moving slowly, backtracking often. He wasn't kidding in New Moon when he said he wasn't very good at stalking. I knew this because I had visions of Victoria and she seemed to be aware of being followed. His gift, I guessed.
I couldn't control my tears when Alice showed me her own tombstone one night. I sent her a multi-page email expressing my support and how sorry I was for her. That night Jasper answered my email with a phone number and Alice and I spent hours chatting until I fell asleep from exhaustion. The next day I had a message from Jasper thanking me.
After that, several days passed without hearing anything. When I tried to induce a vision of Alice, I saw things I didn't want to see from my best friend and her husband…Dammit! Who wants to know in detail the cartography of moles and scars of his brother-in-law! Worse, I now knew that Jasper was circumcised… information that I would have preferred not to know! In response, I exercised my memory by visualizing Edward's perfect body.
My efforts were such that I could now see through his eyes without one of his shirts, as I had succeeded for Alice. It was far from easy. I blamed it on my so-called luck that almost every time I put myself in Edward's shoes, I saw terrible scenes. Human corpses drained of blood and/or dismembered...I knew it wasn't Edward's work, because every time I watched him take care of the bodies, clean them and bury them, but never attack them. I guessed he was coming after Victoria. I felt sorry for him.
By dint of working on my prescience, I had gone to level 5 and the last quest had allowed me to go to level 20. I had put the 30 points offered in Strength, since it was my lowest characteristic now. Strangely, my mental shield had also leveled up by then. So I decided to do strength training every night to keep increasing that stat. I tried daily to feel my shield, but I never had any concrete results.
Charlie understood that I was hiding something from him about Edward leaving. For his part, he had hugged me the night he left, telling me that my safety was most important to Edward and that I shouldn't give up. I smiled at him, telling him that I knew I would find him. He just asked me to let him know when I was going to take off. Charlie is a wonderful dad. The more time passes, the more difficult it is for me not to tell him that I am not his daughter. I feel guilty for receiving so much love from him and elsewhere for not feeling entitled to receive it.
I had started going to La Push regularly. I spent a lot of time with Emily and Rachel and, above all, with Paul… He was the first to support me when I wanted to learn to ride a motorbike, the first also to make fun of me when I ended up muddy to the hair. We even jumped off the cliff once at First Beach. Luckily Paul was there, because I would never have been able to swim to shore, but it was still an unforgettable experience and I gave my favorite wolf a huge hug that day, increasing my bond with Paul to 75 .
Alice was less than thrilled with my new means of transportation. Not because of the price, quite substantial, of my toy, since she had left me this famous bank card in order to be able to change my truck in case it gave up the ghost... I don't know if it was a pious wish or a vision, but she had imagined that I would choose a nice city car with all the security options available today. The day I had brought the motorcycle back to La Push in the back of my truck, she had sent me an email asking me to be careful and concluded with: "He is going to kill me…".
My father was unaware of this new hobby. I saved myself the moment to tell him after the attack of the newborns, when I will no longer need to use it to get my adrenaline shot.
I had started running the weekend before my motocross ride, increasing my form to 250. I left the truck near the beach and ran half an hour along it. It was mid-October, four weeks had passed since the Cullens left, and I was about to do my weekly circuit when I saw a figure on top of the cliff that had served as my promontory a week earlier. He wasn't one of the Quileutes. It was a girl with long brown hair: Jessica.
"She must be cold. »
I jump when I hear a voice next to me. It was Embry who had approached me and was looking in the direction of the cliff. I have already met him at First Beach during my jogging on the beach. He stares with worried eyes at the silhouette of Jessica approaching the ledge. And whisper:
"No, please, don't do that…"
At first I don't understand what Jessica is doing, but when she jumps up, fully dressed, I realize she's not in her normal state and screams. She lands in the water, but does not reappear. I then hear a fabric tearing and see a gray wolf with black spots rushing into the water. Embry just phased in a few feet away from me…
I hear a bark at the top of the cliff and see a red wolf leap into the void in turn, while the gray wolf pulls Jessica's unconscious body by the sleeve. The red wolf joins him and hoists Jessica's inert body on Embry's back, who arrives on the beach. I rush over to them and put Jessica down. She's not breathing and I give her mouth to mouth. Luckily, she quickly coughs up water and regains consciousness. I ask her why she jumped and she admits that her breakup with Jared upset her.
Embry and the red wolf that I guess is Jacob slipped away into the forest during this time. I take care of Jessica, bring her home and we discuss at length the reasons for her leap into the void. I think at first that she thinks I saved her, but when she asks me where the gray wolf is, I block and kick into touch. I see in her eyes that she knows I'm not telling her the truth.
My salvation comes from Paul advising me that he has found Jacob and Embry has phased in. I call him then and confess to him that I attended the scene, which I had described to him a few weeks before and that Jessica saw Embry. Paul then teaches me something that I absolutely did not expect: Embry impregnated with Jessica. I understand better why he phased himself by seeing her jump.
I then arrange a meeting between them and prepare myself for the worst. Indeed, ten days later, Jessica rings at my door and wears a serious look. I invite him to my room expecting me to be yelled at, which does not fail to happen. She's pissed that I kept her out of this werewolf thing. But, right after shouting at me, she jumps into my arms and confesses that she fell in love with Embry and thanks me for saving her.
I then confide in her, tell her about my visions. She surprises me by listing me, like Charlie, inconsistencies in my explanations… She has also heard the stories about cold bloods from her mark and draws a parallel with the Cullens. That's how I finally tell her that Edward and his whole family are vampires, as she had guessed.
At the same time, I monitor the situation in Seattle and I start to worry when I see Riley Biers' file on the living room table. His record is just the first of an impressive pile. Disappearances no longer only concern people isolated from society, but also fathers and mothers and I'm starting to think that the situation is degenerating much faster than expected.
"Quest completed… You can limit the number of deaths if you take care of the situation quickly. »
Meanwhile, my asshole boyfriend got lost in Texas. Alice and Jasper have done all the research they can on Alice's family and are heading to Alaska. I decide to call Alice and we agree on a trip to Denali at Thanksgiving. When I talk to Charlie about it, he first refuses that I go alone, then accepts that I go there, if he can go with me. Since he already knows about the existence of vampires, I have no real reason to refuse. Charlie is reliable and unimpressive so I decide to broach the subject with Alice.
She'll pick me up and Jasper at the airport and they'll drive us to their friends' villa. Fortunately Kate is in on the secret and can't wait to meet me. She wants to thank me for sending her mate. She managed to convince her family to welcome us. I suspect his sisters harbor a small hope that I know their mate as well. As soon as the holidays started, we embarked, Charlie and I, in an old plane which gave me cold sweats. I was less afraid of meeting Tanya than of landing in that old junk heap.
When we arrive, Carmen and Eleazar are traveling and it is Tanya who welcomes us. In fact, she only looked at me once when I arrived… Her eyes were mainly on my father and he was staring at her… I didn't need Alice's translation to understand that my father had fallen in love with Tanya and that she herself had found her soul mate in Charlie… I instantly understood Edward's reflection on Esme's sexuality when, one evening, I heard my father moaning with pleasure followed by Tanya's name. I found earplugs on my nightstand in the morning, courtesy of Alice, probably.
The day after we arrived, I was explaining to everyone how I found and then drove Garrett to Kate, reminiscing about my visions and encounters with vampires in the process. I see my dad tense and look furtively at Garrett when I mention Garrett's diet when we first met. It would seem that he is getting used to the vegetarian diet quite well, since his eyes are more orange than red.
I was a little dreaded to mention Edward's research next to Tanya, but this one seems entirely focused on my father who is particularly receptive to his contacts. MAMAMIA Not in front of me, please! When I bring up what happened on my birthday and explain that I knew what was going to happen, my father and, more surprisingly, Carlisle, give me a scolding, then they ask me what I plan to do with Edward. .
I explain to them that he is currently in Texas, but will soon arrive in South America and Brazil. Alice specifies that he will end up starving himself when he realizes that he has lost Victoria. I then cause an uproar when I show them the newspaper clippings on the situation in Seattle.
Jasper does not take long to realize that someone is creating an army of newborns and deduces that it is Victoria. I confess to them that I have had visions of newborn vampires for several months. I finally understood the difference between them and other vampires… Newborn vampires don't communicate with words. They look more like wild animals. Carlisle ends up saying that it will be difficult for them to manage both Victoria and her army of newborn babies without Edward. We then agree that we must bring him back to Forks before the battle. I volunteer to bring it back by the skin of the buttocks if necessary, triggering a giggle from Garrett.
"I definitely love you more and more young girl! he admitted to me between bursts of laughter. »
