It was the first day she and many medics like her would be sent to the front lines.
She had been awaiting this day for the past two years of her life. All that training, all that work was going to payoff.
But it was more dangerous than she had expected. Gunshots and explosions sounded as Penny stood, transfixed by the chaos around her. Dead men were on the floor, having fallen from various death traps.
Was this really worth it?
"Medic! Medic!"
Penny heard the call of duty as she spotted a young man, covered in blood. He was hurt in the arm, starting to bleed out.
"Don't worry!" She ran toward the soldier, carrying her medical kit. Patching up the wounds, placing a tourniquet on his arm and injecting morphine into the patient, Penny carried the man to safety.
"There there...it's going to be alright." She comforted the man as he's taken off on a stretcher. He was a lucky one, having been taken off just before the gunshots got louder and deaths became more frequent.
Penny sighed as she awaited for another person to call for her. And eventually, it did.
"Medic!"
Penny turned and ran toward the sound, avoiding the gunshots and fire around her. Penny saw the gruesome sight before her. A man lay on the ground, his abdomen covered in scratches. Shrapnel was found in his stomach, having been taken from a nearby bomb. It was a stroke of luck that he wasn't killed...or perhaps a curse.
Penny gulped as she injected morphine into a patient, numbing the pain. Penny started to stop the hemorrhaging with the gauze. She pulled out her forceps and started to take the pieces of shrapnel out. Penny couldn't be too quick or too slow, for the shrapnel could damage the internal structure. She had to be as careful as possible.
Suddenly, she heard something fall in front of her. Penny briefly stopped her operation, looking for the strange thing that fell out of the sky. She grew cold as she realized what had fallen in front of her...
*BOOM!*
Penny awoke, sweating profusely. She looked around, finding herself back in her bedroom.
It was just another nightmare. Another memory that had creeped into her mind as she slept.
Penny sighed, not wanting to know what happened afterward. Penny went to her desk and began to draw, finding herself not wanting to sleep again. She drew some sketches of herself in her pharmacist outfit, then looked back at her anime posters.
She had watched many anime after she had retired being in the military. Penny resumed her career as a pharmacist, but the memories of the war haunted her day and night. The only thing she can do to cope is to do her job, and while being off from work, watch anime, read manga, and draw.
Penny had a strange idea and started to draw over one of her sketches. She added some cute magical girl tools and weapons to her pharmacist outfit. Penny smiled as she saw the end result.
A pharmacist dealing with her job and magical girl business at the same time. What a great anime it would be!
Penny giggled at the thought. It was good to forget about the war for a while. As she colored in her drawing, Penny heard the phone ringing.
It was only 5 am, a few hours before her next appointment. Who could be calling this late?
Penny picked up the phone, hearing a man's voice on the other end.
"Is this Dr Mannette?"
"Yes, sir. I'm Penny Mannette, pharmacist from home."
"You know Resurgam First Care, is that right?"
"Of course! It's a hospital a few blocks from my home."
"Well, we're missing a pharmacist at the receptionist office. Perhaps you're up for the job."
Penny gasped. She had dreamt of being part of the Resurgam First Care for a long time. She had seen commercials, the hospital itself as she took her walks around the street. Penny had always wanted to be a pharmacist working there. She had been tired of working at home, where she lived in a apartment.
"Yes! I want to sign up."
"Alright. We will see you this afternoon. Don't be late!"
The phone hung up. Penny sat in silence for a few moments before she happily went back to bed. The thought of being one of the doctors at Resurgam First Care hospital had elevated her mood. Penny closed her eyes, awaiting the day that she would become a real pharmacist.
