They entered one of the operating rooms.
There on the table lay a little boy, deep asleep. They probably gave him anesthesia to help him rest. There next to him is a woman with black silky hair, dressed in Japanese attire. She seemed calm and friendly, even as they were beginning the operation.
"Hey, Tomoe!" The woman shouted. Tomoe looked at the other woman and smiled. "Oh, Maria! It's nice to see you." Tomoe looked at Penny, who was extremely nervous. "Oh, you must be new. Are you an assistant?"
"Umm, I'm a pharmacist. I signed up for Resurgam First Care." Penny spoke, trying to look as perfect as possible. She didn't want to be as embrassing as she was to Maria.
"Wow! Did you bring multiple kinds of herbs and medicines? You must be smart!" Tomoe said as she looked at the lumpy, heavy bag Penny carried. "Y-yes! A pharmacist like me must really be prepared for anything!"
"Miss Tachibana! Don't be distracted and begin the operation!" A doctor shouted. Tomoe's expression turned serious. "Of course. Let's begin."
She took a mysterious looking contraption and gently put it inside the boy's mouth. "This is my trusty endoscope. I made this myself."
"Wow...Is he going to be okay?" Penny asked, concerned. She had never seen endoscopy in action before. "Of course he will! Tomoe's a natural at this!" Maria assured Penny with a grin. "I've seen her do this many times."
Penny looked at the screen as it turned on. It showed the inside of the boy's stomach. "Who is this child?" Penny asked. "This is Luke Reynolds. He has polyps inside his stomach. I'm making sure he's cured of them."
"Poor Luke. Will it hurt?"
"He's under anesthesia, so it won't. We're just going to find the polyps and retrieve them."
Penny looked back at the screen. There was something abnormal in the stomach. It looked like some kind of plant.
"Doctor! That must be a polyp!"
Tomoe nodded. "Let's get the snare." A snare came below from the endoscope. It quickly went toward the polyp and after fastening around it, cut the polyp off. "There. Now let's use the forceps to retrieve it."
A forceps came from the endoscope and grabbed the remains of the polyp, pulling it back. Outside, the forceps put the polyp on a metal pan. "Now let's keep going."
The endoscope moved forward. After a minute of looking, there was a spot with more polyps, with what looked to be hemorrhaging, blood pools everywhere.
"Oh my! We better take care of this. Let's use the hemostatic forceps and the drain to get rid of the hemorrhaging."
As Tomoe's work continued, Penny's skin turned pale as she stared at the screen, but held her urge to vomit at the sight of blood. Tomoe seemed so calm about this, as she had done this before. Penny is amazed as she watched the doctor kept doing her handiwork.
"There. Let's keep going. I believe there's more The stomach was completely empty, devoid of any polyps.
"Is Luke going to be okay now?"
"No, I believe our work isn't done. We must continue into the large intestine." The endoscope went further into the body. After cutting and removing the remains of polyps, they eventually found the last polyp.
"Thankfully, it doesn't seem like there's anymore polyps here. Our work will be done once we retrieve this last one."
"Really?!"
"Don't celebrate yet." Maria said to Penny with a seriousness. "We don't know what this will do. Hemorrhaging, an ulcer..."
The snare went over to the polyp and started to tighten around it. When the polyp is finally cut, however, a huge tumor appeared!
Penny was shocked. "A tumor?! Oh no!!" As Penny panicked, Maria immediately shouted for Tomoe to begin the "Pomwell Procedure". Tomoe nodded and a scalpel appeared
"Let's begin. We must cut an incision on the tumor." The scalpel went across the tumor 3 times.
"Now we use the snare to cut the tumor. But it might cause the vitals to drop. That's why I need to use the stabilizer."
An injector appeared from the endoscope and injected the stabilizer into the patient.
"Now let's use the snare." The snare appeared and went over to the tumor, adjusting itself to fit around the tumor and after fitting it around the tumor.
Within a few seconds, the tumor was removed from the large intestine and was now on the metal plate outside.
"Phew..." Maria sighed, laying back on her chair. Penny was relieved too as Tomoe pulled the endoscope out of Luke's mouth. "He'll be okay now."
"How are you so calm during all this?" Penny finally had the nerve to ask. "I've done this before. There was another boy I operated on, one of the first patients I took care of."
"Wow...I wished I had seen endoscopy in action years ago. It looks so easy."
Tomoe frowned. "Endoscopy is a extremely important and delicate procedure. You need to make sure not to bump into any walls and use the tools correctly."
"Thanks for letting me watch your procedure."
Tomoe's frown turned into a smile. "You're welcome."
