Chapter 5 – The poltergeist

Hecate Hardbroom and Ada Cackle had gone back to the potion's lab that evening to see if things were still being thrown, to their surprise it didn't look like anything had been thrown, they were very confused.

"That chair wasn't there when we left" Hecate simply stated.

"I'm not hearing any screeches either, strange almost like we had imagined it, yet we all saw it" Ada mused.

"Wait a minute, what is that" Hecate wondered. She walked up to her desk as she had noticed some writing on it. "Just out of curiosity Ada do you believe in Ghosts?" she looked at Miss Cackle as she spoke.

"I can't say I do" she chuckled "Why do you ask?"

"Come here and tell me if you see the same thing as me" Hecate responded. Ada walked up to the desk and both women were very confused.

I want to play

Here is a riddle

Lets see

If you are as clever as me

RIP

To the descendant of me.

"doesn't make any sense to me" Hecate frowned.

"You're not as bright as you seem then, the question is who is my descendant? and it's neither of you".

They both spun round at the question it wasn't any of them that had spoken, there floating by the door was translucent figure who looked like a teenager, with a dress that suggested she died around the 1600 era. Long brown hair and her eyes were sunken, there was blood around her lower region. She looked around and then left the room.

"Ghosts no, Poltergeists yes" Ada stated, "She looks familiar though I'm not sure where from".

Hecate was deep in thought, is there a student in the school that is in danger. What are we going to do, poltergeists aren't friendly.

"What are we going to do with the students, they can't stay here, it's not safe?" Hecate asked Ada.

Ada transferred herself and Hecate to her office.

"Looks like she was from the 1600's, a very dark time for teenagers" Ada mused, both women where looking into all the students ancestors and found nothing about a death at the school that resembled the poltergeist.

"Have we checked every single one" Hecate asked frustratedly at 2am.

"I am sure we have" Ada sighed.

"You haven't found her yet, have you? How unfortunate for you. I am sure you will find her, next year" the Poltergeists laughing voice could be heard echoing the room.

Hecate grabbed the stack of the student's names that had been checked and laid them out in their year groups and to her horror there were two missing.

"Where are Mildred and Ethel's files Ada?" Hecate asked nervously.

Ada went to her filing cabinet and sure enough there they were, she picked up Ethel's first.

"The Hallows should be easier to decipher" she told Hecate, They went through Ethel's ancestors and the poltergeist didn't belong to her family.

Hecate picked up Mildred's "If it's Mildred's Ancestor I am going to cry".

"Mildred's ancestor's will be much harder to look up as her family hasn't had witches in their blood for 12 generations" Ada looked at Hecate and saw the fear in her eyes.

"I bet it's Mildred's" Hecate's voice quivered. "The poltergeist wouldn't make it easy for us".

"One answer down, Now, who am I?" The poltergeist sang.

Hecate fell to her knees in despair, Mildred was her favourite student she had made the girls life hard since she had enrolled at the school four years ago and the girl had done nothing but prove her worth every time. She had grown to really care for the girl, she would never admit it to anyone but Ada. Every so often teachers might get that one student that becomes a success story and that student for Hecate had been Mildred.

They did their best to try and figure out which ancestor of Mildred's she was, but it was futile. There just wasn't enough on Mildred to find even one ancestor.

"There has to be something" Hecate was losing patience, then a thought hit her. "Ask your mother if she knows if there are any hidden files anywhere Ada, as a past headmistress maybe she put them somewhere to free up space in here"

"It's 5am she is not going to be awake to answer a call now" Ada responded, "I will call her in a few hours. For now, this situation stays between us".
