The United States is gone, and in it's place is a wasteland, created by nuclear fallout during the Great War. 234 years later, A Wasteland Survivor escorts a girl to new Charleston to reunite her with her uncle. will the Wasteland Survivor keep the little girl alive long enough to get to New Charleston, or will they succumb to the creatures that the nuclear fallout created?

8. Chapter 8

After the battle for the Brotherhood of Steel Southeastern's chapter's main base, John was making sure that New Charleston was safe before he left to lead New Charleston's army to his home of New Anderson. Claire played with Dogmeat since the Commonwealth Republic was sticking around to help John and his people. Zoey also played with Dogmeat until John was able to find a Boykin spaniel for Claire to have. Claire jumped for joy and petted her new Dog. John smiled more as Zoey hugged him.

"Mayor Bertrand, we found something!" said one of John's subordinates. Walking over, John saw a Pre-war Armory and was shocked at the armaments there. He then said, "I heard about these, Main Battle Tanks I believe they were called." That was when Nate said, "Fought alongside some of these back in the day during the battle of Anchorage." John looked at Nate and said, "You fought in the Resource Wars?" Nate nodded his head and said, "108th Infantry Regiment, US Army." John smiled and said, "wow, I read all the files I could about the old world when I was in the Brotherhood of Steel. Your regiment had seen many battles during the Sino-American War." Nate nodded his head and sighed.

"I think if we cannibalize some of the tanks we could get a few working." said the one subordinate. John thought about it before saying, "ok, let's get the engineers to work." the Subordinate nodded his head and ran off to get some engineers. Then Nate called for Elder Maxson. When Elder Maxson joined them, Nate asked, "Do you think it's possible for us to rebuild the Main Battle Tanks in the commonwealth Republic?" Elder Maxson thought about it and said, "Well the tanks are over 2 centuries old, so we will need to cannibalize several of them to get at least a few working. I'll get our scribes looking into it." Nate nodded his head and said, "don't forget to tell the Institute's own engineers and the minutemen too." Elder Maxson nodded his head and walked off to contact the brotherhood of Steel Scribes that stayed in the commonwealth.

"Hey Nate, I've been meaning to ask, how big is the commonwealth Republic?" John asked his fellow leader. Nate looked at him and said, "Well after we secured Massachusetts, we brought the rest of the New England commonwealth under our control and were even able to get all the way down to Washington D.C. and take the Eastern and Columbia Commonwealth areas. There were hard places to take from time to time, like what was once Pittsburgh is now called the pitt. It was a place filled with Raiders that were once Brotherhood of Steel members. We asked them if they wanted to join us, they said no. They even opened fire at us, so we were forced to put the city under siege." John was shocked to hear that as Nate went on to say, "We were having trouble getting into the city when a 35 year old man, who had a battered rifle showed us a way into the city undetected. So I sent the Brotherhood of Steel and some minute men sharpshooters to follow the man and we were able to take the City. I asked him to join us but he said that he couldn't so he left us, a man wandering in the wasteland by himself… I wonder what happened to him."

"Damn, well anyway thanks for telling me how far you got in case New Charleston wants to expand beyond old South Carolina." John told Nate. Nate nodded his head and Said, "Appalachia is open for you, heard that some people survived there." John nodded his head and said, "Ok, once we get all of South Carolina secured we'll move up." Nate agreed with him. John then said, "If you want to come along Nate you and your army can." Nate nodded his head and said, "Of course we'll come, we promised to help New Charleston as we're allies now so I'm gonna help." John smiled and the united armies began the march while some men in power armor stayed behind to protect the engineers.

After a While, John and Nate crawled into a vantage point over New Anderson. Pulling out a pair of Binoculars, Nate and John looked over the settlement. Nate said, "I see a good number of Raiders, how many attacked here when you fled?" John looked at the Settlement and said, "A good 80 at least and… oh that bastard." Nate looked at him and asked, "What?" John told him, "By the Blue house, the guy in the Raider Power Armor." Nate looked and saw who John was Referring to. John then said, "That man, he led the assault on my home." as John thought back and told Nate about the time he last left New Anderson.

He was laying down on his bed in his family home when the alarms began to sound and his dad ran into the house. John got out of bed and asked, "What's happening dad?!" John's dad shouted, "Get your rifle, Raiders are attacking!" John got out of his bed and grabbed his Pipe Gun with a long light barrel, marksman's stock, scope, and compensator modifications added to it. He then ran to the wall and the settlers living there were met with a large group of about 80 Raiders, armed with Pipe Pistols, shotguns, Combat rifles, machetes, Tire Irons, assault rifles, and there were even several wearing Power Armor.

"PEOPLE OF NEW ANDERSON! MY NAME IS PORTER GAGE! I RUN THE VICIOUS COYOTES! SURRENDER YOURSELVES TO BEING SLAVES OR DIE!" Shouted a man in Power Armor. (A.N.: Yes I know Porter Gage is a Raider for Fallout 4's sixth add-on and you can kill him in the Quest Open Season, but in this Story, Porter Gage escapes and joins a new group of Raiders.) The Settlement leaders looked at each other when John's dad said, "HELL NO!" Porter Gage smirked and said, "Suit yourself. Rocket launchers." Soon several Raiders, armed with Rocket launchers, walked into view. The settlers realized they were in hot water thanks to John's dad and Porter Gage said, "Fire." The Raiders armed with Rocket Launchers pulled the triggers and all 6 rockets struck the wall, making explosions that killed several settlers, including the settlement's leaders minus John's dad.

"OPEN FIRE!" Shouted John's dad as Porter Gage shouted, "CHARGE!" Soon there was a firefight between the settlers and Porter Gage's Raiders. As the battle went on, the Settlers were slowly being dwindled as John kept fighting but his rifle was struck and broke. John's dad then told him, "John! Run to the house, grab my 10mm, head out through the emergency tunnel and blow it behind you to keep the raiders from following you." John was shocked and told his father, "No! I'm not gonna abandon You all! This is my home!" his father told John, "Son, you're not abandoning us, you're surviving. now GO!" John didn't want to argue, but he did as he was told. He ran back to his family's house, grabbed his dad's 10MM pistol and enough clips to last. John heard the settlers screaming that the Raiders broke in. He had to hurry, he saw children and women running. He wanted to help, but his dad told him to run. Following his dad's orders, he ducked into the emergency tunnel under the house and ran, setting off the explosives as he ran by them.

Diving out of the tunnel, John heard the last of the explosives his dad rigged up blow up and the whole tunnel collapsed. John then got up the hill and saw his home in flames, the screams of the women and children echoing out. John fell to his knees and cried as he clenched the ground. Looking up, he then said, "I swear, I will avenge them all. I will kill Porter Gage."

Back in the present, John and Nate looked at Porter Gage as John said, "He was the one… he was the one who butchered my settlement." Nate looked at him and said, "Porter gage…" John looked at him and asked, "You know him?" Nate nodded his head and said, "He was a Raider I ran into at the remnants of Nuka-World. There were different Raider Factions all part of a Nuka-world Raider alliance. The three groups were called The Pack, The Disciples, and The Operators." Nate then said that the Commonwealth Republic wiped the Raiders from Nuka World and were able to get it back up and running.

"The only Raider I didn't find was Porter Gage. I'm sorry John, if I had killed him back in Nuka-world…" Nata said. But John told him, "It's ok, I don't blame you. I blame him, he led the slaughter of my home." Nate looked at him and said, "We'll get him back for this. That I promise." John nodded his head and continued looking through his binoculars at the raiders, they were armed with the same things they used to attack in the first place, armed with Pipe Pistols, shotguns, Combat rifles, machetes, Tire Irons, assault rifles, and there were even several wearing Power Armor.

John pulled out his dad's 10 MM Pistol and loaded a round into it as he said, "I'm gonna use this to avenge my family, my neighbors, my home. Porter Gage will pay for what he did." Nate and John then crawled backwards to get out of sight as they got to their Power Armor suits; John's X-01 Power Armor and Nate's Brotherhood of Steel Issued T-60 power armor. They walked to the group of soldiers that stood up as Nate said, "We'll need to come up with a plan." John pulled out his gauss rifle and said, "Here's the plan, we storm in there and kill all the Raiders, Porter Gage is mine." Nate looked at him and said, "You saw their defenses, they're too strong, we'd lose too many men."

"What if we use the Vertibirds to fly us in?" asked a soldier. Nate looked at him and said, "if they rocket launchers and get a good shot in, they can take a Vertibird down." John nodded his head and said, "when I was a Squire, New Charleston used Old world SAM Sits and Rocket launchers to take down several Vertibirds." That was when Sergeant Smith suggested, "How about stealth boys? We found a bunch of them at a RobCo manufacturing & storage building a few months ago." John smiled and said, "That can work, combined with people dressed as Slavers we could get inside. Ugh, but Porter Gage would probably suspect something." as the ideas were being put out, John groaned and said, "we're wasting time! We need to take the town now!" Nate told John that they at least needed to block off all means of escape for the town. But John said, "I DON'T CARE! PORTER GAGE NEEDS TO DIE!" John then grabbed his Gauss Rifle and said, "JOIN ME OR NOT! I'M ATTACKING!" John then ran towards his home, his men following him into battle. Nate sighed as Elder Maxson said, "Was it really wise for us to help him?" Nate looked at him and said, "We swore we'd help him get all of South Carolina. Revenge is a poison that can make people do irrational things."

Back with john, he fired a shot from his gauss Rifle, after modifying it with a Shielded barrel for Better range and damage, a Recoil compensating stock for Exceptional recoil, a Capacitor boosting coil for Exceptional ammo capacity and superior damage, and a Medium night vision scope for even more accuracy and even could fire at night, at a Raider, getting a headshot. John's men followed him and opened fire at the raiders. Armed with Laser Pistols and Assault Rifles while the raiders were suddenly caught off guard and most were shot in the head before they could grab their weapons. Some of John's men set up mortars and launched shells into New Anderson, taking out several Raiders, even two Raiders wearing power armor.

John slammed his first into a female Raider's head when he saw Porter Gage and got angry. Porter Gage looked and shouted, "NO! MY RAIDER GROUP!" John charged as he screamed and tackled Porter through a wall, slamming him to the ground. John punched him in his face and shouted, "YOU PIECE OF SHIT! YOU KILLED THE PEOPLE I KNEW! PEOPLE I CARED ABOUT! YOU TOOK OVER MY HOME!" The last punch broke Porter's Power Armor's helmet. Porter kicked John off him and said, "THANKS, YOU BASTARD!" John said nothing as he got out of his Power Armor and charged.

Dodging a swing from Porter, John was able to get the Fusion core from his Raider Power armor, forcing Porter to come out of the suit. Porter then said, "ok, looks like we're doing this the old fashion way." John and Porter then got into a fist fight. John, using the skills he learned while serving in the Brotherhood of Steel, was easily overpowering Porter in physical power. Pushed into a metal wall, Porter wiped blood from his lip and said, "Not bad kid, got a lot tougher from when we last saw each other." John pulled out his pistol and said, "you bet I have, I've learned a lot, met new people. Now I will finally have my revenge."

"JOHN WAIT!" shouted Nate. Porter looked, saw Nate, and got angry. He shouted, "YOU! YOU DESTROYED MY GANGS!" John put the pistol to his head and said, "Wrong, we saved Civilians. Give me a damn good reason not to ice him right now Nate?" Nate told John, "Killing him will make you no better than him. He's also wanted by the republic for crimes against humanity." John looked at Porter with disgust before he used his Pistol to knock him out.

Later, most of the Raiders surrendered after Porter was taken prisoner. Lee looked at the men and was saddened at what his Raider group had become. John sat down and teared up before crying, all his emotions letting loose on that day. Zoe walked over to him and hugged him softly. John wrapped his arms around her one arm and cried more as he couldn't stop the tears. Later, Claire was allowed into New Anderson and hugged John closely, and he returned the hug. Later, John was shown where all the settlers were buried, just a mass grave. John looked for his father and found his father. He shed tears as he looked at his father's corpse, beyond giving a proper burial. John pulled out his 10 MM pistol and placed it on his father's chest.

"Hi dad, I'm home… I did it. I got payback for us all." John said to his dad's body before Claire looked at him with Zoey. John then recovered his dad's body and the pistol. Claire and Zoey walked over to John and Claire hugged him as Zoey placed a hand on John's shoulder. That was when Elder Maxson walked up to them and said, "I may not have know your father Mr. Bertrand, but I can tell he raised you right." John looked at Elder Maxson and said, "Coming from the man whose whole family has been involved with the Brotherhood of Steel, I'll take that as a compliment."

"President Nate told you about me then." Elder Maxson. John stood up and looked him dead in the eye, "It's called I did my homework on the Brotherhood when I was a part of it. I know that your Ancestor, High Elder Roger Maxson, was a captain in the U.S. Army in the Resource Wars before the Great war. He and his men were stationed, along with a Colonel Robert Spindel, to the NBC Division of West Tek, after they achieved breakthrough results in the Pan-Immunity Virion Project. The mission, to secure and oversee the project, now dubbed the FEV (Forced Evolutionary Virus) project." Elder Maxson stroked his beard and said, "You have done your history homework."

John nodded his head and said, "Yeah, and I also know that when they all found out the truth about the Project, your ancestor and his men practically declared open rebellion against the U.S. Government on October 20, 2077. But by then the Great War was all but upon them. After the bombs dropped, your ancestor took his men and their families to the Lost Hills government bunker, birthplace of his great Brotherhood of Steel." John pulled out a bottle of whiskey and took a swig of it before handing it to Elder Maxson. Taking it, Elder Maxson had a swig of his own. John then said, "At least you could give your fallen proper burials. I can't give my dad one." he took the bottle back and downed another swig.

"Judging by the mound here…" Elder Maxson started, but Nate stopped him. John fell onto his ass and cried into his hands, he hoped his father was still alive, but that dream was shattered when he was told that the raiders killed everyone. Maxson nodded his head and shot a killer look at Porter Gage as he was being held by two Brotherhood knights. John shouted, "WHY?! WHY DID THIS HAPPEN TO MY SETTLEMENT?! WE DID NOTHING WRONG!" Zoey knelt and wrapped her arms around him as Claire sat on his lap and hugged him as well. John held Claire close and said, "Sorry Claire, I hope you didn't worry too much about me?"

"It's ok dad." Claire said as she and John hugged each other. Zoey smiled as Elder Maxson and Nate both let them be. Later on, John looked around his old home and said goodbye to it one last time before walking out and seeing Zoey, smiling he hugged Zoey for being by his side through all the tough times he's had to deal with and that was when realized how cute she was as she played with Claire. Nate walked up to John and said, "Seeing someone you like?" John looked at Nate with a blush and said, "what? No, I mean… I um…" Nate chuckled and placed a hand on John's Shoulder as he said, "Hey look, I know the feeling, when I fell in love with my first wife Nora, then again with Piper. It's called love, it's nothing to sweat over. Why don't you go ask her out?"

"I mean… she is a cute one, but it's been only 2 weeks since Hyra…" John said as he clenched his fist, making Nate realize he's not over her loss. Nate then said, "John… look I was upset when I lost my Nora…" Nate then pulled out the wedding ring he had around his neck and showed it to him before continuing, "This was the ring my wife had on when the man who took my infant Son away shot and killed her." John put a hand to his mouth as Nate said, "Piper knows I loved my first wife very much. She told me I could take my time in falling for her and eventually I did." John smiled and nodded his head, and thanked Nate. That was when Elder Maxson walked up to them with Rachel wearing her new Elder outfit.

"Elder Rachel Smith Reporting in." Said Elder Rachel. (A.N.: Her real name is Rebecca but she likes to be called Rachel.) John smiled and said, "You've come far from your Squire days Rachel." Rachel smiled and thanked her old Mentor. John then looked at Zoey and realized that they still needed to show her family at Vault 140 she was ok. John then walked over to Zoey and Claire before he said, "Hey Zoey, did you want to go home to your vault? Let your family know you're ok?" Zoey was shocked and looked at John before asking him, "Are you sure?" John nodded his head.

Zoey teared up and hugged him hard. John blushed and hugged her back. Zoey then asked Claire if she wanted to meet her family as well and Claire nodded her head. Soon a vertibird from Rachel landed and allowed John, Zoey, Claire, Claire's Boykin spaniel that she named buddy, and Nate all got on board and flew toward the location of Vault 140, to Zoey's home.
