As Long As We Make It Out Alive

Kurama moaned awake as his eyes fluttered open. His head was hurting with a migraine.

"Hey," A voice said to him.

Kurama looked up to see Amaya holding him against her.

"Amaya, what are you-," Kurama tried to talk but his head throbbed horribly.

"Easy," Amaya soothed, "Just relax. You're all right."

Kurama was confused about what was going on. He couldn't even lift his head from Amaya's shoulder.

"I think you've got a concussion," Amaya told him, "You hit your head pretty hard."

Kurama closed his eyes as he passed out against Amaya.

"Hiei," Amaya called out to him through telepathy.

"What is it?" Hiei answered.

"I'm taking Kurama back to the Spirit World," Amaya told him, "He's not well."

"Alright," Hiei replied, "We'll be there soon."

Amaya called Koenma on the communication mirror, "Koenma, open the portal. I need to bring Kurama back. He's injured."

"Right away," Koenma nodded.

Once the portal appeared Amaya carried Kurama in her arms into Koenma's office.

"Kurama! What happened?" Botan rushed over with tears in her eyes.

"He hit his head," Amaya laid Kurama on the couch.

Botan sat down and carefully placed Kurama's head in her lap, then did her best to heal him.

Amaya sat down quietly at the end of the couch. She saw how Botan's tears fell onto Kurama's face. "He's going to be fine, Botan," Amaya told her gently.

(Tokemei Clan Territory)

They had split up to cover more ground of the ruined village.

Yusuke stopped when he found hundreds of graves. "Oh my God," Yusuke felt himself shudder.

Kuwabara carefully combed through his section using his spirit awareness to search for the jewel. He wasn't having any luck. He was still uncomfortable being there in deceased Lycan pack's territory. It was affecting his concentration.

Hiei was actually relieved when Amaya said she was taking Kurama to the Spirit World. He was worried about her with her PTSD acting up. It was better that she went back.

Hiei went into another home. He used his Jagan to look around. He saw the journal of Amaya's mother hidden away in a box. He carefully took the heavy book out of its hiding place. He took it with him as went to find Yusuke and Kuwabara.

They were standing in a burial site paying their respects. Hiei silently gave his own respects.

"Yusuke, Kuwabara," Hiei got their attention, "Time to go."

(Koenma's Office)

Amaya took a warm wet rag and gently washed away the blood from the side of Kurama's face where he hit his head.

Amaya and Botan looked up when the portal opened. Amaya went to Hiei and hugged him around the neck. Hiei wrapped an arm around her, hugging her back and buried his face into the side of her neck.

"Thank you," Amaya smiled when Hiei handed the journal to her.

"How's he doing?" Yusuke asked looking at Kurama.

"He's going to be ok, but I don't think he'll be able to help for the rest of the mission," Botan petted Kurama's hair.

"If he can't help us we're screwed," Kuwabara was suddenly nervous.

Amaya sat back down with the journal in hand.

"Where are we going now?" Yusuke looked at Koenma.

"Let's see," Koenma looked at the GPS on his desk and started to track down the jewel.

Kurama slowly opened his eyes. He looked at the others confused.

"Kurama," Botan smiled, relieved that Kurama was finally awake.

"What happened?" Kurama wondered.

"When we were surrounded by Lycans you were attacked and hit your head so hard that you got a concussion. Amaya had to bring you back here," Yusuke explained.

Botan helped Kurama sit up. "I remember now," Kurama stated feeling a little dizzy.

Amaya was listening but was paying attention to the journal. She found an envelope tucked between some pages. It was a letter to Yoko.

"Kurama," Amaya addressed the redhead.

"Yes?" Kurama looked at her. Amaya handed him the envelope.

"This is your mother's handwriting," Kurama observed. Reading it would have to wait so he put the letter in his pocket.

"This isn't good," Koenma was having a hard time locking onto the jewel's signal.

"You can't find it?" Kuwabara asked.

"I'm working on it," Koenma stated a little agitated.

"Did your enemy find it?" Amaya found it strange that they hadn't ran into the person that was after it.

"I'm positive that Kenji hasn't found it," Koenma replied as he continued to look for the signal.

Amaya and Kurama knowingly glanced at each other. Something about them being followed by an enemy was a lie.

"Ah ha!" Koenma exclaimed, "There it is! It's in your city, Yusuke and Kuwabara."

"Ok," Kuwabara got excited, "Let's go and find it already! This wild goose chase is getting old!"

Yusuke and Kuwabara rushed through the portal. Hiei calmly followed them. Amaya looked at Botan and Kurama.

Botan looked at Kurama. Kurama smiled softly, "Go with them, Botan. I'll be all right."

"Are you sure?" Botan was concerned.

"Yes, I'm sure," Kurama reassured her. He gently kissed her.

Botan followed Amaya through the portal. Koenma stepped out of the office to handle something.

Kurama took out the letter and carefully read the words left for him by Amaya's mother. He couldn't believe what he was reading. He paled at the secret that the letter had to tell him.

"How can it be possible?" He whispered.

"Kit, don't let anyone see this until we know the truth," Yoko told him from the depths of his mind.

"Of course," Kurama safely tucked the letter away as Koenma came back into the office.

(Human World)

"Ok, obviously, we're gonna have to split up," Yusuke said as they walked down the street and into an alleyway.

"That sounds like the most ideal action," Botan agreed.

"Alright, let's go," Kuwabara ran off in one direction as Yusuke went in another. Amaya and Hiei disappeared in flashes of color. Botan flew off on her oar.

(Koenma's Office)

Koenma took the small envelope from Kurama, "Are you sure about this?"

"Yes, just please have it done as quickly as you can," Kurama told him then looked at Koenma sternly as his green eyes changed to gold and Yoko's presence filled the room, "And you will not breathe a word of this to Amaya or any of the others. Am I clear?"

"Y-Y-Yes," Koenma stuttered nervously, "Perfectly clear."
