Kobayashi awoke to find that Tohru was no longer snuggling with her, which told her that the dragon maid had awoken at some earlier point. At first, she shrugged it off, figuring that Tohru was probably doing some maid activity such as preparing breakfast. However, she heard that familiar bumping of the disco beat, so she got out of bed.
(She better not be doing what I think she's doing…)
After putting on her glasses, Kobayashi headed for the kitchen/dining room, only to discover Tohru dressed up in her disco getup, dancing her ass off to "Odyssey Pt. 1" by Johnny Harris. Kanna was dancing as well, dressed in a pink dress and matching pumps. Kobayashi's response came thusly:
"WHAT THE CRAP!? ARE YOU SERIOUS WITH ME RIGHT NOW!?"
"Hey, there's no better way to begin one's day than with disco grooves!" said Tohru.
Kanna smiled. "Miss Kobayashi, I love disco music!"
On one hand, Kobayashi wanted to kick Tohru's ass for waking her up with…well, "Odyssey Pt. 1" was technically electronic funk rock, but it did have a disco vibe to it. On the other hand, seeing that Kanna was happy took away any of Kobayashi's desire for violence. Nevertheless, she laid down the law as best as she could:
"Did you at least fix me breakfast…Tohru?"
Tohru gave a thumbs up. "Of course! It's all ready for you!"
"Oh good."
Kobayashi went over to the dining room table and helped herself to some breakfast…or at least tried to. Hearing the rapid-fire synth grooves and funk guitars proved to be overwhelming for her, so she slammed down her chopsticks in frustration, went over to the stereo and hit the "PAUSE" button. Naturally, Tohru and Kanna not only stopped dancing, but the former even took notice:
"WHAT!?" Tohru put her fists on her hips. "How DARE you stop my dance music!?"
"Tohru, as much as I love disco music, I don't wanna hear it non-stop while I'm trying to eat breakfast. Besides, I'm surprised you didn't wake the neighbors."
"So!? I was having a good time!"
Kanna clasped her hands together and gave Kobayashi "Bambi eyes". "Miss Kobayashi, can you please turn the music back on?"
Tohru copied Kanna's mannerisms. "Pretty please?"
On one hand, Kobayashi didn't want to be bothered with incessant disco music while eating breakfast, but on the other hand, Tohru and Kanna were two of her favorite people in the world, and those looks they were giving her were too good to resist, so…
"All right, I'll put the music back on."
"YAY!" Tohru and Kanna cheered at the same time.
Despite the non-stop disco music pumping in her ears, Kobayashi managed to finish breakfast and get ready for her day without freaking out, even though she really wanted to. By the time the stereo was playing "Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me" by Peter Brown, Kobayashi was heading out.
"Where are you going, Miss Kobayashi?" asked Tohru.
"I'm going to Takiya's place for a few hours. I'll be back soon."
Kanna clasped her hands together. "Miss Kobayashi, you promised you'd spend some time with me today!"
Kobayashi smiled. "And I will. I just wanted to see Takiya and Fafnir for a bit. Like I said, I'll be back soon, OK?"
Kanna nodded. "OK."
Soon, Kobayashi made it to Takiya's house, where she knocked on the door.
"Good morning, Kobayashi!"
As he always did at home, Takiya was dressed up in his "nerdsona", complete with Coke-bottle glasses and buck teeth.
"Hey there, Takiya."
Takiya beckoned to Kobayashi. "Come on in!"
Kobayashi entered Takiya's house, taking her shoes off before entering as per Japanese custom. He wasn't the only one in this house, though:
"Hello, Miss Kobayashi," said Fafnir. "What brings you to this abode?"
"I'm gonna be honest: ever since this morning, Tohru and Kanna have been non-stop dancing to disco music, and it's getting on my nerves. Like, how can anybody be that obsessed with a particular genre of music?"
"I sympathize with your pain. Takiya has attempted to demonstrate the basics of disco dancing to me, but his attempts have been abject failures. I find this form of dancing and the music that accompanies it to be vomitous."
"Hey, we don't have to try again if you don't wanna!" said Takiya. "I was just offering you a new way to have fun!"
"Then please stop offering it to me." Fafnir turned to Kobayashi. "That aside, it's fortunate that you came here. I'm having trouble with a particular boss battle in Legend of Verneria and am close to giving up on the game completely."
Kobayashi smiled. "I'll be glad to help."
Thus, Fafnir and Kobayashi played multiplayer in Legend of Verneria. Even with Kobayashi's assistance, however, they still had difficulty beating that one boss that Fafnir was stuck on. With a little luck, though, they found a trick to beating it and managed to overcome it, which Fafnir was pleased with:
"Thank you for your assistance, Kobayashi. You have proven yourself worthy. Shall we go on to the next dungeon?"
Kobayashi nodded. "OK."
And so, Kobayashi and Fafnir continued playing the game together. Having gotten past that boss, Kobayashi was having an easier time progressing through the game. Of course, it helped that she was playing with Fafnir. They made it to the next dungeon with some difficulty, but not too much. While the boss of this dungeon was certainly tough, Kobayashi and Fafnir had an easier time with this one thanks to what they'd learned from the last one. Soon enough, Takiya came in:
"Hey Kobayashi, it's just about lunchtime. I've got instant ramen, instant udon, instant soba…instant everything!"
Kobayashi nodded.
After lunch, Kobayashi and Fafnir continued gaming. Eventually, though, Kobayashi decided to call it:
"Fafnir, this is fun, but I have to get going now. I promised I'd spend some time with Kanna, plus Tohru's supposed to cook supper for me."
"I understand. Spending time with you was fun. I am grateful for your assistance."
"Likewise. Have a nice day."
"You too."
Kobayashi headed back to her apartment. Unsurprisingly, Tohru and Kanna were still dancing, this time grooving to "Lady Bump" by Penny McLean, and Kobayashi made no bones about her annoyance:
"OH, COME ON, TOHRU! Can't you save the dancing for the club!?"
"Why save it for the club? Boogie fever never dies!"
"Come on, Miss Kobayashi, let's dance!" said Kanna.
Seeing as how she'd promised to spend time with Kanna, Kobayashi had only one choice:
"Well, all right."
"YAY!"
Thus, Kobayashi got down and pretended as though she was having a good time dancing. Eventually, though, her life preservation instincts got the better of her:
"Tohru, I love dancing, but I'm hungry!"
"Oh, of course! Can't forget to eat!"
Tohru paused the music and proceeded to cook her famous omurice, much to Kobayashi's delight:
"You know, Tohru, even if you are a disco freak, you're still the best cook I know. Thank you for at least taking a break to cook for me."
Tohru swallowed. "You're welcome!"
"And thank you for spending time with me," said Kanna. "I like sharing disco music with other people."
"You're welcome, Kanna." Kobayashi took another bite.
"So, you excited to go to the disco again?" asked Tohru.
Kobayashi sighed. "To be honest, I'm a little tired of hearing you play disco music over and over again, but I like spending time with you, so I'm pretty excited about it. Plus, I like seeing Lucoa."
"Hey, always look at the positives!"
Kobayashi smiled.
Once she got dressed up and Sasakibe had come to watch Kanna, Kobayashi was off to Mutsumi's with Tohru. This time, when they got there, the DJ was spinning "Heartbreak In Disguise" by Pattie Brooks. Kobayashi and Tohru wasted no time in getting down. Naturally, Lucoa was there, easily spotted by the mob of guys wanting to dance with her. Kobayashi paid no nevermind to it, figuring that such craziness was de rigeur for discos. Lucoa did, however, break away from her mob of admirers to say hi to Kobayashi and Tohru again:
"Tohru! Glad you could come tonight! Nice to see you too, Kobayashi!"
"Nice to see you too, Lucoa," said Kobayashi.
"Hey Lucoa, disco music rules!" said Tohru.
"I know! Have you been dancing to it all day like I have?"
"YOU'VE been dancing to it all day as well!? That is SUPER AWESOME! We have to get together at your place!"
"Please do! I'm sure Shota would enjoy having someone else to dance with…not that he doesn't enjoy dancing with my sexy ass!"
Tohru giggled. "Oh Lucoa, you're so bad!"
The three young women continued dancing to classics such as "I'm Your Boogieman" by KC and the Sunshine Band, "Daddy Cool" by Boney M and "Love Is the Message" by MFSB. Eventually, they decided to hit the bar. Tohru and Lucoa ordered the same drinks they'd ordered last time, while Kobayashi got a Coke.
"Cheers!"
Tohru raised her glass, and Kobayashi and Lucoa toasted with her. They had just finished their drinks when Tohru's ears were pounded by the familiar synth bass of "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc.
"OOH! Come on, you two! Let's dance!"
Without question, Kobayashi and Lucoa followed Tohru back to the dance floor. Upon reaching it, Tohru proceeded to do the robot dance, and Lucoa followed along. Suitably intrigued, Kobayashi did her best to follow along, but it was clear that her movements weren't the most robotic. Still, she thought that this added a fresh new twist to what was one of her favorite disco songs. Seeing what these three were doing, some other people did the robot dance. As much fun as she was having, however, Kobayashi knew that the fun couldn't last forever, so she spoke up to Tohru:
"Tohru, this is fun, but I really have to get going now!"
"Why? Don't you wanna dance all night?"
"Tohru, I have work in the morning! I need sleep!"
"Come on! Can't we dance a little longer?"
"NO! We're going home!"
"Aw, come on! Just a little longer!"
"Yeah, what's a little longer gonna hurt?" said Lucoa.
"Girls, you might be able to go for long without sleep, but I can't! I really gotta go home!"
"But Kobayashi…!"
"NOW!" Kobayashi grabbed Tohru by the wrist.
Tohru attempted to resist. "MISS KOBAYASHI!"
"Tohru, stop arguing with me! We're going home and that's final!"
"But I wanna keep dancing!"
"You can keep dancing tomorrow!"
"But I'm not tired!"
"Tohru, if you go home with me now, I promise I'll pre-order that new Sonic game you've been looking forward to."
Tohru froze briefly, and then gave up her struggle.
"All right, you win."
The trip back to Kobayashi's apartment was hardly notable, though Kobayashi couldn't help but take notice of Tohru's dejection:
"Tohru, are you that sad that I wouldn't let you dance all night?"
Tohru sighed. "I just wanted to have fun."
Kobayashi smiled and put a hand on Tohru's shoulder. "I know, and believe me, I have fun whenever we go to the disco. Thing is, us humans also have daily responsibilities that we have to fulfill, and we can't always dance our way out of them, understand?"
Tohru nodded weakly. "I understand."
"Still, I'll share in disco with you whenever I can. You're one of my favorite people, you know."
Tohru smiled. "And you're one of mine!"
Tohru gave Kobayashi a big hug, and once again, the latter returned it. Even if Tohru was pretty much addicted to disco, Kobayashi still liked her, and she figured that the dragon maid would listen to reason sooner or later. Besides, she gave great hugs. Eventually, the two let go.
"Well, looking forward to bathing with me again?"
Kobayashi smiled. "Definitely."
And that was exactly what the two did before snuggling with each other for the night.
Criticism is gold. Negativity and nitpicking are pyrite.
