Episode 5
(The Chameleon Princess shows Samantha into the back room of the medical centre, where Chameleon Pinto is waiting.)
SAMANTHA: Wait, who's she?
(The Chameleon Princess turns, pulling out her ray gun and aiming it at Samantha.)
PRINCESS 2: Try to run and I'll kill you.
SAMANTHA: Wait… What–What's going on?!
PRINCESS 2: I haven't time to explain it to you. Get on the bed.
(Samantha does as told, getting on the bed next to the Chameleon Pinto, while the Chameleon Princess keeps the ray gun aimed at her. Once on the bed, the Chameleon Pinto ties down Samantha's arms and legs.)
SAMANTHA: What–What are you going to do to me?!
PRINCESS 2: It's more about what you're going to do for us. You're going to help us kill the Doctor.
(At which point, the Chameleon Pinto starts attaching the headband to Samantha's head. Samantha tries squirming, but the Chameleon Pinto ultimately succeeds in getting the headband on.)
SAMANTHA: You're mad if you think I'm going to help you!
(The Chameleon Princess switches the ray gun for the pen-like weapon in her jacket.)
PRINCESS 2: Perhaps if you sleep on it, you'll change your mind.
(The Chameleon Princess then sprays Samantha with the pen-like weapon, knocking her out. The Chameleon Princess puts the pen-like weapon back in her jacket pocket.)
PINTO 2: I fail to see why it takes two of us to kill this Doctor.
PRINCESS 2: You haven't been trying to deal him all day long. He's tricky, and extremely clever. The more of our people we have surrounding him, the easier it'll be to trap him.
PINTO 2: I thought you'd done that several times already.
PRINCESS 2: This time, we'll get it right. Now, is there anyone left to be processed?
PINTO 2: Not on Earth, no.
PRINCESS 2: Then we shall have to reprocess someone else. I'll call up someone from the kiosk, they can spare a body now that we're almost finished.
(The Chameleon Princess and Chameleon Pinto head through the curtain, passing the unconscious original Princess, who's also strapped down to a bed. The Chameleon Princess goes to activate the TV set on the nearby table, when suddenly the Chameleon Pinto grabs her arm.)
PINTO 2: Wait. Someone's coming.
PRINCESS 2: Then get rid of them.
(The Chameleon Pinto scowls at the Chameleon Princess, before heading into the front room of medical centre. The Chameleon Princess remains behind the curtain but watches through a gap. She sees the Doctor has entered the medical centre and draws her ray gun. Unbeknownst to the Chameleon Princess however, the original Princess is waking up.)
PINTO 2: (To Doctor) Can I help you?
DOCTOR: (To someone outside the medical centre) Bring him in.
(Two policemen enter, escorting between them the Chameleon Meadows.)
PINTO 2: I'm afraid I don't understand.
DOCTOR: I think you two have something in common.
PINTO 2: Is this man ill, officer?
DOCTOR: Roll up your sleeves.
PINTO 2: What are you talking about?
DOCTOR: Officer!
(One of the police officers steps forward and grabs the Chameleon Pinto, restraining her.)
PINTO 2: Please, take your hands off me!
DOCTOR: Certainly.
(The Doctor rolls up the Chameleon Pinto's sleeve, revealing the black device on her forearm. The Chameleon Princess is panicked. Meanwhile, behind her, the original Princess is quietly twisting her wrists and flexing her hands, trying to get free of her restraints.)
DOCTOR: I've seen all I want to see.
(As the police officer lets go of the Chameleon Pinto, she tries to reach for something in her pocket, but the Doctor grabs her arm, stopping her from using it.
DOCTOR: I'll have that if you don't mind.
(The Doctor pulls out the Chameleon Pinto's hand, and then takes the pen-like weapon from her, before putting it away in his own pocket.)
DOCTOR: (To Meadows 2) Now then, where is her original?
MEADOWS 2: It's in there.
(The Chameleon Pinto blocks the doors to the back room.)
PINTO 2: You can't go in there!
DOCTOR: Would you rather be destroyed? Keep an eye on her, officer.
(The police officer pulls the Chameleon Pinto aside.)
DOCTOR: (To other officer) Bring him along.
(The Doctor enters the back room, with the Chameleon Meadows and police officer. They don't see the Chameleon Princess or the original, as they're hidden by the curtain, but they do see Samantha strapped to one of the beds, with the headband on her.)
DOCTOR: Sam! Sam, are you all right?
(The Doctor runs over, quickly removing the headband from Samantha and releasing her.)
DOCTOR: Sam? Sam, can you hear me? (To Meadows 2) What's happened to her?
MEADOWS 2: She's been put under by our gas, likely prepped for processing.
DOCTOR: Can we bring her out of it?
MEADOWS 2: Use the weapon you took from the nurse.
(The Doctor takes out the pen-like weapon. He twists a part of it, and satisfied, uses it on Samantha, spraying her with it. Only this time, Samantha wakes, coughing as she does. The Doctor quickly helps her to sit up.)
DOCTOR: There, there, it's all right. Just catch your breath.
SAMANTHA: Oh, what…? What's going…? Where…?
DOCTOR: One moment.
(The Doctor rolls up Samantha's sleeve, but there's no device on her arm.)
SAMANTHA: What are you doing?
DOCTOR: Just checking up. Now, you just sit there for a moment and catch your breath. (To Meadows 2) Where is the nurse's original?
MEADOWS 2: It's in a panel in the wall somewhere. The controls are under that bed there.
DOCTOR: Show us.
(The Chameleon Meadows bends down under the second bed. He then uses the same switch the Doctor did before, causing a shelving unit to slide away, revealing the original Pinto, frozen. Her eyes are open and unblinking, with a white device attached to her forearm. Before anything else can be done though, there's a scream from the front room. The Chameleon Pinto then rushes in, holding a ray gun, which she aims at the Chameleon Meadows.)
PINTO 2: You traitor!
SAMANTHA: Look out!
(Before the Chameleon Pinto can fire, the Chameleon Meadows leaps towards the original Pinto, hitting the device on her forearm frantically. The result of which, causes the Chameleon Pinto to suddenly melt into a puddle very suddenly, clothes and all. The only thing left to prove she'd actually been there, is the ray gun and black device, which are now surrounded by a goopy green puddle like substance, which slowly spreads across the floor. But before everyone can relax, the Chameleon Princess step out from behind the curtain, ray gun in hand.)
PRINCESS 2: You'll pay for that, Meadows. As will you, Doctor.
DOCTOR: Finally decided to reveal your true colours then?
PRINCESS 2: (Shocked) Wha… You knew?
DOCTOR: Of course.
PRINCESS 2: But…But how?
DOCTOR: Well, there was a lot of little things. But there's been one rather obvious indicator since you first took on that form. The top hat. The Princess always wears it, and when she isn't, she's asking to get it back or trying to do so. You never even mentioned it once.
PRINCESS 2: Well, it doesn't matter. Not now that I've got you right where I want you.
(The Chameleon Princess advances with the ray gun aimed at the Doctor. The Doctor backs up quickly, raising his hands.)
DOCTOR: (Quickly) Except you had me here before, and you didn't kill me then, why is that?
(The Chameleon Princess comes to a stop.)
DOCTOR: Maybe because you don't want to risk damaging your machine?
PRINCESS 2: The machine is of no consequence, now we were finished. You won't escape this time, Doctor. So say good blah…
DOCTOR: I'm sorry?
(The Chameleon Princess tries to speak, but only nonsensical noises come out, confusing everyone, even her. That's when the original Princess steps out from behind the curtain, top hat on her head, and her sleeve rolled back to reveal the white device on her forearm that she is currently tampering with.)
PRINCESS: Oops, let's turn that back.
PRINCESS 2: Leave that alone!
PRINCESS: There, that's better.
PRINCESS 2: Leave that alone or I'll kill him!
PRINCESS: Well, you were threatening to kill him a moment ago anyway.
SAMANTHA: You're… But you're over…and you're…
PRINCESS: Oh, hello! We've not met yet. I'm the Princess, and it's lovely to meet you, Samantha.
SAMANTHA: But we…
DOCTOR: No, that was her you met, Sam.
PRINCESS 2: Everyone stop talking! (To Princess) You, do anything and I'll kill all of them.
PRINCESS: You kill anyone, and I'll rip this off.
PRINCESS 2: Then you'll kill yourself.
MEADOWS 2: That's not true!
PRINCESS 2: Shut up!
MEADOW 2: Drop the gun, you fool! Do you want to end up like Pinto?
(The Chameleon Princess hesitates, but then with anger throws down the ray gun.)
PRINCESS 2: This isn't over.
DOCTOR: You're right. But it will be soon. Come with me.
(The Doctor steps over, pulling back the curtain to reveal the bed the Princess had been strapped to. The Doctor, Chameleon Princess and original Princess step over to the bed.)
DOCTOR: On you get.
(Moodily, the Chameleon Princess climbs on the bed, before the Doctor restrains her.)
PRINCESS 2: I'm surprised you don't just kill me.
PRINCESS: I'd rather not, if it can be avoided.
PRINCESS 2: Then I'll make sure you regret it.
DOCTOR: I think that's enough from you.
(The Doctor takes out the pen-like weapon and twists it again, before spraying the Chameleon Princess, knocking her out.)
DOCTOR: And that puts an end to that at least.
PRINCESS: And before I forget.
(The original Princess reaches into the inner jacket pocket of the Chameleon Princess, taking from her the pen-like weapon, which she then puts in her own pocket. The Doctor and Princess then turn towards each other.)
DOCTOR: It's good to see you again, Princess.
PRINCESS: You too, Doctor.
(The Doctor and Princess embrace each other.)
DOCTOR: You're not hurt, are you?
PRINCESS: No, they just kept putting me to sleep. So I doubt I'll be needing much of that for a while.
MEADOWS 2: Excuse me, Doctor.
(The Chameleon Meadows is helping a waking Pinto out of the secret room.)
DOCTOR: Sit her on the bed.
(The Chameleon Meadows leads Pinto over to the bed, sitting her down. Once there, Pinto begins rubbing at her head, slowly waking up from what the Chameleon's did to her. Meanwhile, the Princess picks up the black device from the green goop, wiping it off with a handkerchief.)
DOCTOR: Will there be any permanent damage?
MEADOWS 2: No. You can take that off now.
(The Doctor removes the white device from Pinto's arm.)
DOCTOR: Officer, would you mind watching over these two?
(The police officer nods, while the Doctor heads back into the front room with the Princess and Samantha. The Doctor begins searching through the nearby desk.)
SAMANTHA: (To Princess) So, are you the real one then?
PRINCESS: I think so.
SAMANTHA: What, you mean you don't know?
PRINCESS: Oh, deja vu. I haven't changed again, have I?
SAMANTHA: Changed?
PRINCESS: It's just, I'm sure I had a similar discussion with Ben and Polly the last time that happened. Didn't I…?
SAMANTHA: Look, are you the Princess I met outside the kiosk, yes or no?
PRINCESS: No.
DOCTOR: She'd already been replaced by the duplicate at that point, Sam. What's this?
(The Doctor pulls out a file of paperwork from the drawer of the desk and begins flicking through it.)
SAMANTHA: But then, how'd you know who I was if we've never met?
PRINCESS: Well, we're meeting now, aren't we, Samantha? Or do you prefer Sam?
SAMANTHA: I'd prefer to know what's going on?
DOCTOR: Little chance of that happening I'm afraid. Take a look at this.
PRINCESS: Wait, where's Ben and Jamie?
DOCTOR: Ben was captured like you and Polly, and Jamie–
SAMANTHA: Jamie, that's right!
DOCTOR: Where is he?
SAMANTHA: What, don't you know? I thought you two– I mean, you and the other her got him to do it.
DOCTOR: Do what?
SAMANTHA: Pinch me ticket!
DOCTOR: Pinch your ticket?
SAMANTHA: To stop me from going to Rome.
DOCTOR: Oh. You mean Jamie has–
SAMANTHA: Has gone in my place!
PRINCESS: Gone where?
SAMANTHA: On one of their flights.
DOCTOR: Which means they've got them all. First Polly, then Ben, now Jamie. We've no time to lose.
PRINCESS: What do we do?
DOCTOR: We'll return to air traffic control, I've got some new friends for you to meet, Princess.
PRINCESS: Oh, goodie!
DOCTOR: (Into back room) Officer, bring along the man. We're going back to air traffic control.
(Later, the Doctor and Princess are in air traffic control with the Commandant at his desk. Jean and Samantha are stood nearby, while an officer stands alongside a sat down Chameleon Meadows. The Princess is currently busy colouring in her white device with a black marker pen.)
COMMANDANT: But she's wearing one of those devices, Doctor.
DOCTOR: Yes, I know, but I assure you this is my real friend.
COMMANDANT: Then why not take off the device, you said it won't harm her.
DOCTOR: No, but it would harm her duplicate.
COMMANDANT: So, what's it matter?
DOCTOR: It matters to us. Now you've seen my arms and you know I'm not one of them. Trust me when I say you can trust this Princess.
COMMANDANT: All right. But where's the duplicate, we should have it locked up for safety.
DOCTOR: We've already taken care of that. But you really must see this.
(The Doctor taps the file he got at the medical centre adamantly.)
COMMANDANT: Personnel files?
DOCTOR: Yes, I found these in the Medical Centre. Records of twenty-five people who work here. Each one of these has been taken over by Chameleons.
COMMANDANT: Right. (Picks up phone) I'll have them all under arrest within fifteen minutes. (Into phone) Airport Police please. Now, Jean, show him will you.
DOCTOR: What is it?
(Jean hands over a piece of paper to the Doctor to look over.)
JEAN: The Chameleon Air Schedules. Notice, their last flight of the season goes in an hour.
COMMANDANT: (Into phone) Superintendent Reynolds please.
PRINCESS: (Distant) Last chance. If they get away now, we'll lose them forever.
COMMANDANT: (Into phone) Superintendent? Commandant here.
(The Princess suddenly snatches the phone from the Commandant.)
COMMANDANT: What the devil do you think you're–!
PRINCESS: We'll call you back.
(The Princess hangs up the phone.)
COMMANDANT: I was in the middle of a phone call!
PRINCESS: No, you were at the start of one.
DOCTOR: What is it, Princess?
PRINCESS: We have to let them think they're getting away with it.
DOCTOR: Why do we…? (Realising) Oh, yes, I see.
COMMANDANT: See what?!
DOCTOR: Remember, Commandant, somewhere in outer space, there are fifty thousand young people, three of our friends amongst them, and somehow, we've got to bring them back.
COMMANDANT: But if we arrest them–
PRINCESS: They might just leave them behind, and then we have no way of getting anyone back.
DOCTOR: But if we get on this last flight, we might just be able to bring everyone back. In order to do that though, we need them to think all is going according to plan.
HESLINGTON: Commandant?
COMMANDANT: What is it, Heslington?
(The Commandant goes over to a radar station, where Heslington is sat.)
HESLINGTON: This blip. It's just appeared out of nowhere and it's coming this way.
COMMANDANT: Right, well keep tracking them. It maybe the Chameleon plane returning. Now look here, Doctor. All very well talking about getting on that plane, but how?
PRINCESS: Oh, that's easy.
COMMANDANT: How so?
PRINCESS: We play them at their own game.
(The Princess holds up her arm, showcasing the mostly black – but with a bit of white still to be coloured in – device on her forearm.)
PRINCESS: See this. They put the white devices on the originals, and the black ones on the duplicates. Once I've finished with this, at a glance, it'll look like I'm a duplicate.
COMMANDANT: But what about the Doctor?
(The Princess pulls out the black device she took from the medical centre.)
PRINCESS: I picked this up from the remains of the Chameleon Pinto. You can wear it Doctor and pretend to be a duplicate like me.
DOCTOR: But what if there's an odd number, one more Chameleon than they're expecting?
PRINCESS: (Pointing to Meadows 2) You can claim you used to be him. After all, they can change more than once. (To Meadows 2) Isn't that right?
(The Chameleon Meadows nods somewhat reluctantly.)
DOCTOR: What about the nurse though, we'll still be missing here.
PRINCESS: Oh, yes. I forgot about her. Maybe Samantha could take her place, claim to be her?
DOCTOR: But then we wouldn't have enough devices to prove we are who we say we are. With Pinto, I doubt they'd check to make sure she had a device on her arm, they'd just assume after so long… We might have to talk to her.
PRINCESS: Or hope they don't notice one missing Chameleon.
COMMANDANT: But even if you get on that plane, what do you hope to do?
DOCTOR: Foremost is getting up to the satellite itself. But beyond that I don't know.
COMMANDANT: And if you get caught up there?
DOCTOR: Then we will have one card to play, and that's up to you, Commandant.
COMMANDANT: What's that?
DOCTOR: The people the Chameleons have taken over, the originals, are hidden somewhere here in Gatwick Airport. You have got to find them.
COMMANDANT: Of course, and get those fearful things off their arms.
DOCTOR & PRINCESS: No, no, no!
DOCTOR: Find them, by all means.
PRINCESS: And make sure their safe.
DOCTOR & PRINCESS: But don't tamper with those devices.
DOCTOR: Otherwise we lose our one threat. The one thing we may be able to bargain with.
COMMANDANT: Yes, I see that. All right, I'll take care of it.
DOCTOR: I'm sure you will, Commandant. We might not be able to talk again before we go. So be careful, and remember to confirm who you're talking to in the meantime.
COMMANDANT: Yes, of course.
DOCTOR: Goodbye.
COMMANDANT: Good luck, Doctor.
PRINCESS: It was nice meeting you at last.
(The Doctor and Princess exit.)
(Later, in the back room of the medical centre, the Doctor and Princess are stood with Pinto.)
DOCTOR: Now, is everything clear? You're sure you understand what we're asking you to do?
PINTO: Yes…Yes, I understand.
PRINCESS: You don't have to do it if you don't want to, we'd understand.
DOCTOR: We can think of something else.
PINTO: But you haven't the time. And those poor young people.
DOCTOR: So, you'll help us?
PINTO: I'll try.
PRINCESS: Thank you.
DOCTOR: Now, if you could help me get this on.
(The Princess helps the Doctor put the black device on his forearm.)
PINTO: What about me, do I need one?
DOCTOR: There aren't any more I'm afraid.
PRINCESS: We're hoping they won't check you and assume you're the Chameleon.
PINTO: I do hope there's more to this plan than blind luck.
PRINCESS: Afraid not.
(At that moment Blade enters the room, immediately spotting the Doctor.)
BLADE: How very convenient.
(Blade takes out a ray gun, aiming it at the Doctor.)
BLADE: Lock the door.
PINTO: No, don't shoot! This…This is Meadows. He had to be re-processed.
BLADE: Why?
PRINCESS: The Doctor figured out he was one of us and alerted the authorities. However, when myself and the Doctor caught up to Meadows, I was able to capture him.
DOCTOR: There seemed little use for Meadows' form now, so I took the Doctor's.
BLADE: You won't mind proving it?
DOCTOR: Of course not.
(The Doctor lifts his sleeve, showing the black device attached to his forearm. At the sight of this, Blade smiles, putting away the ray gun.)
BLADE: (To Princess) Well done. We now have possession of both the Princess and the Doctor. (To Pinto) Have you managed to find a way to keep their originals permanently suspended?
PINTO: Yes actually. And the Princess has been re-processed too. She now has all her original's thoughts and memories.
PRINCESS: That's right.
BLADE: Do you think they will be useful to us?
PRINCESS: Uh…yes.
BLADE: Good. I'm glad to hear all this wasn't for nothing.
DOCTOR: Does that mean you'll be taking us up to the satellite?
BLADE: I am taking everybody back to the satellite on the next plane. It's the last flight. Surely you haven't forgotten that?
DOCTOR: The re-processing. It's difficult to remember details.
BLADE: Yes, of course, I understand. What have you done with the originals?
PRINCESS: We had to move them from here. The authorities have become suspicious of this place.
BLADE: Did they find anything?
PINTO: No. They had no idea what they were looking for.
BLADE But the originals are safe?
DOCTOR: Quite safe. But if you can remind me of where the other originals are, I can have them transferred before we leave.
BLADE: There's no time for that now. Jenkins will see you through Immigration. We leave in fifteen minutes.
(Blade exits the room.)
PINTO: Do you think we convinced him?
PRINCESS: I think so.
DOCTOR: In any case, we've got aboard that plane. Come on, don't let's be late.
(The Doctor, Princess and Pinto exit the room. But unbeknownst to them, behind the curtain, on the bed she's been strapped down to, the Chameleon Princess awakens.)
(Later, the Doctor, Princess and Pinto are sat in a row together on the Chameleon Tours plane, as it flies away from Gatwick airport. All around them are other Chameleons that have been processed into human duplicates.)
PINTO: (Quietly) How much longer?
DOCTOR: (Quietly) Shouldn't be too much longer, judging by the last time. Try not to worry.
PINTO: (Worried) Do you feel that?
DOCTOR: Yes. The plane's changing course. We're heading straight up. Being pushed into our seats by gravity.
PRINCESS: (Quietly) Look out here. The wings.
(The Doctor leans over, looking out the window with the Princess.)
DOCTOR: Folding in, minimising the surface space for gravity to act against.
PRINCESS: We're leaving the Earth.
DOCTOR: Which means we're almost there.
(From outside the window, the Princess and Doctor watch, as blue sky transforms into the black void of space, with only distant stars to break up the darkness. As they leave the Earth, so too does the effects of gravity pushing them into their seats. However, the plane appears to have artificial gravity, as nothing is floating around. Soon after, the plane flies into the hanger of the Chameleon's satellite. It hovers through, before touching down on its landing gear as normal. Once landed, Blade steps out of the cockpit and stands before them all.)
BLADE: One moment. Owing to the complete success of our operation, living space on our satellite has had to be used for our…cargo. Therefore, quarters will be re-allocated. Report to the accommodation centre for instructions.
(Blade walks back into the cockpit, as the Chameleon duplicates begin rising from their seats to leave the plane. The Doctor, Princess and Pinto wait for the aisle to clear.)
PINTO: (Quietly) Do you think he's suspects?
PRINCESS: (Quietly) He shouldn't have a reason to. We haven't said a word to anyone since getting onboard.
PINTO: What do we do now then?
DOCTOR: Let's just follow the others for now.
(With most of the Chameleons having exited the plane, the Doctor, Princess and Pinto stand up to leave with the stragglers.)
(A short while later, the Doctor, Princess and Pinto are following the Chameleon duplicates through the corridors of the Chameleon satellite from behind.)
PINTO: What now?
DOCTOR: We slip away and see if we can find these young people. Come on.
(Rather than follow the Chameleon duplicates, the Doctor, Princess and Pinto take a different corridor. However, when they reach the next junction, they find Blade waiting for them.)
DOCTOR: Ah, Captain Blade, we're carrying out your instructions. We're looking for the accommodation centre.
BLADE: My instructions don't apply to you.
PRINCESS: What do you mean?
PRINCESS 2: He means, none of you are who you claim to be.
(From behind Blade, steps out the Chameleon Princess, with a satisfied grin. At which point, the Doctor, original Princess and Pinto are surrounded from all sides by Chameleons and Chameleon duplicates, all armed with ray guns…)
