Chapter 30
The sun shone brightly and it seemed to herald the start of a good day, the majority of the party was smiling as they headed for Grand Central.
"So, why exactly are we going to this place?" Mike queried.
"Apparently there's an exhibition of some new Oscorp creations." Dustin explained. "So we thought why not, we might as well go and see it, give us all something to do together."
Max nodded. "Yeah, it would be a good way for you to relax too."
Lucas agreed. "With everything you've been through Mike, it'd be good for you to do something fun."
"Thanks guys, I guess you're right." Mike agreed before looking around. "So, where's Will?"
Dustin sighed, his arm around Suzie's waist. "Late as usual."
Mike rolled his eyes, he might have expected that, but regardless he was hopeful that this would be a good time as they finally reached Grand Central and entered the place, ready to begin their observations of the Oscorp exhibition. As they did so, Mike's phone buzzed, he checked it and nodded to the others.
"Speak of the devil, it's Will." He joked.
The others grinned as Mike read.
"Sorry, running late, I'll be there soon, I promise. Going to use a shortcut I know."
Mike smiled, it wasn't unexpected by now for Will to run late, but he had to admit, he didn't fully understand the last part, what kind of shortcut was Will talking about.
Entering Grand Central and heading down to the main lobby area of the massive building, most of the central area taken up with stands showing various Oscorp inventions.
"What is with Oscorp." Suzie mused. "They've got so much money from their various pharmaceuticals and other products, yet they continually create and seem to showcase military products more than anything."
Max smirked and snarked. "A lot of macho posturing, that's what it seems like to me."
The others quietly mused about that, wondering if that was the exact reason. The boys shared a look, they weren't so sure, they in fact felt that it was something more dangerous, a sign of the exact character of Mayor Osborn who, despite all appearances, they knew still had a lot of hold over Oscorp and its products. After looking at some of the exhibits Mike excused himself to head to the bathroom. He headed off and the others waited by one of the large screens towards the rear staircases, waiting for Mike to return.
"So, what do you think?" Lucas asked. "Is Mike really holding up alright?"
Dustin nodded. "He was in a pretty bad spot right afterwards, but Will and his mom took him in and kept him safe."
"His mom also left his dad, taking his little sister with her." Max continued. "They've spoken about that and it looks like there's hope. He's doing much better now."
Lucas nodded, taking some relief at that.
As they stood together following that little conversation they felt that maybe all the craziness that had hit the city in the past few months would finally calm down. Their wish sadly would not be granted, for it did not take long for things to escalate. Things had seemed normal enough, even as more people began to enter. But Max's sharp eyes spotted something. All the men entering were carrying guns, and wearing some now familiar masks.
"Oh shit."
"Max?"
The others looked at her worriedly. She directed their attention to the approaching gunmen.
"It's the Demons, they're...they're here." She whispered.
The others turned and looked, seeing the danger but sadly too late. A burst of gunfire and soon the Demons were taking control, barking orders and before they could slip away, they found themselves in a desperate situation as two of the Demons surrounding them and aiming at them.
"Alright you lot, get over there with the others, don't even think about trying to get away!" One yelled.
The other shoved Suzie who was nearest him, Dustin caught her and glared at the man but wisely just followed along as the gun was aimed at him. They were forced along towards the centre of the room were all the other hostages had been gathered and forced to sit on the floor. While not directly brought to this group, they were brought close and made to sit down too. That was when Mr. Negative entered, sword in one hand and a device in the other.
"Good, this will increase the impact." He remarked as he glared around at the hostages. "It is time, this place will be destroyed and these lives lost, if Osborn does not reveal the full truth of his duplicity and actions."
It was then they realized what the device was, a bomb, and it was being set up.
The party grimaced as they sat, suddenly fearful as they realized the full danger of the situation they were in, they were practically ground zero of the bomb. The two couples looked around worriedly, the other hostages were all seated in the same fearful situation, some of the Demons remained guarding them while Mr. Negative stood by the doors leading to the platforms while joined by two others. The remaining Demons, the majority of them, were patrolling around the building, looking for stragglers.
"Oh shit." Lucas whispered. "Guys, Mike was in the bathroom, he probably doesn't know about this. If they find him?"
The others flinched at that, worriedly more than ever.
"What are we going to do, we can't, we can't stay here." Dustin whispered. "But we can't do anything like this?"
Max shook her head. "Quiet, there's nothing we can do guys. We're trapped and there's no way we're gonna do this without being noticed."
That was when something happened, something which filled them with hope, for they saw it. Looking up at one of the windows, they saw Spider-Man slip inside, he had clearly seen the situation and was here to save the day, now they had real hope that they'd be saved.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
