Entries from Andy's Diary:
Today was different. A day that almost felt like the old days, a gentle touch of normalcy in the chaos that's surrounded us. Carpatescu's words had weight, a gravity that I could feel deep down, and it made me consider the direness of our situation. The future of humanity hangs in the balance, and we've been given a mission beyond our wildest imaginations.
But after the gravity of that call, they gave us marbles. Marbles! Some of the kids looked at them like they were foreign objects from another planet. But the sight of those shiny, colorful spheres brought back a flood of memories for me.
The schoolyard back home, where we would gather in a circle, hunched over, trying to knock each other's marbles out of the ring. The simplicity of it, the sound of marbles clinking against each other, the joy of victory and the fleeting disappointment of loss. For a while, the world outside didn't matter. We were just kids playing.
Bean was the first to master the flick, and soon a small crowd had gathered around him. Dink and Alai became the unofficial champions of our new mini-tournament. Jennifer, with her surprising stealth strategy, managed to win a good number of matches. Even Vassilissa, who's always been more of the strategic type, got into the groove of things.
It's ironic, isn't it? Here we are, trained for war, for battles far beyond marbles, yet this simple game brought us together more than any simulation ever did. It reminded us of what's at stake, of the world we're fighting for—a world where kids can play with marbles without the weight of the world on their shoulders.
The food...well, let's say it's become a bit monotonous. But that's not what matters. The spirit of camaraderie, of being there for each other, that's what fuels us. Today was a good day. But we know the battles that lie ahead. We're ready. For ourselves, for each other, for humanity.
Until tomorrow, Andy.
