The kids are housed in individual cubicles, each with a small bed, desk, and sink, much like single rooms in a college dorm. Each has a terminal, used for homework, the occasional non-training videogame, and an internal email system. Andy and Vassilissa are two of the kids who get a strange message, from "Naima", who claims to be a Christian hacker living at Petra. The Christians have just learned of the training centers, and want to invite people to leave. They also want to know if there are any abuses going on.
From: Naima To: Andy; Vassilissa Subject: The Truth Awaits
Hello,
I understand this might come as a shock to you, but you need to trust this message and its purpose. I am Naomi Tiberias, aka Naima, a Christian hacker currently stationed in Petra. My purpose is simple – I want to unveil the truth and provide an alternative perspective. The training centers you're in have only recently come to our knowledge. We are concerned about your well-being and the motive behind the training.
First, if you wish to leave, know that Petra provides sanctuary and a safe environment for all. It's a community built on love, care, and understanding – something that the world seems to have forgotten.
Second, please let us know about the situation inside. Any form of abuse, be it physical, emotional or otherwise, needs to be reported. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ wants every child of His to be treated with love and respect.
I urge you to be cautious. Do not speak of this message with anyone. If you feel it's safe and want to communicate further, reply to this mail.
In Christ's love, Naima.
Andy stares at the message for a moment. Heart racing, they glance around to make sure no one's peeking over their shoulder. While many of the L's seemed kind in their own detached way, Andy could never be sure about the true intentions behind the program. And the intensity of the training, coupled with the strange doctrine, always felt off.
Vassilissa's reply pings in shortly after, in a separate thread.

Andy,
Did you receive a message from someone named Naima? What do you make of it? I'm skeptical but also curious. Is this our ticket out?
Awaiting your response.

I'll bite! A question for you: in history class we are taught that Yahweh is the reason why there aren't any kids around older than us, and why disasters keep happening. Does your people teach that this is true?
From: Naima To: Andy; Vassilissa Subject: Re: Seeking Answers
Andy,
Thank you for your reply and your candidness.
In our understanding of the Scriptures, we believe that the events unfolding have been foretold. Yes, the Rapture occurred where children and true believers were taken, not as an act of theft, but as an act of mercy. In a world destined for tribulation and suffering, the innocent were spared the hardships. It is difficult to grasp, but it's an act of divine love, not malice.
As for the disasters, they have been allowed to come upon the world, not because God desires harm but to call people to repentance and salvation. Every action has a divine purpose, and while we may not always understand the rationale, we believe that God's plans are for our ultimate good.
Is He being framed? That is a matter of perspective. Those who don't understand or don't want to accept God's purpose might frame it differently. But, to us believers, we see it as the unfolding of Biblical prophecy.
Our concern is for the well-being of the children and ensuring that all are treated with the love and compassion that every individual deserves. Please, let us know how we can assist.
In Christ, Naima.
Vassilissa's follow-up message arrived shortly after.

Andy,
I've read the reply from Naima. It's a lot to take in. What do you think? Are we on the wrong side of this?

Thanks for being honest. I like that you aren't treating us like little kids. Another question for you then: Would I be welcome? On my second day, Nurse Lindsey asked me if I was a boy or a girl. I thought I'd be a butt and answered "Just give me the Bulbasaur!", but then they marked me "nonbinary" and I looked it up and I like that. It's a lot less drama to be just Andy, you know? I've been told that Christians aren't okay with that.
From: Naima To: Andy Subject: Re: Personal Concern
Andy,
Thank you for sharing this deeply personal aspect of your identity with me. Gender and identity are sensitive topics, especially among various Christian denominations and interpretations. At Petra, we uphold a conservative understanding of scripture, which posits that God created male and female with distinct roles and purposes. This is based on our reading of the Bible.
However, it's crucial for me to emphasize that regardless of our beliefs about gender and roles, every person, including you, is infinitely valuable in the eyes of God. While we might hold certain interpretations of scripture, God's love transcends our understanding, and everyone is worthy of His love and grace.
I am deeply concerned about your well-being and hope that you are surrounded by supportive individuals who care for your emotional and psychological health. Regardless of our differences in belief, know that our intention is always to ensure your well-being.
In Christ's love, Naima.
From: Vassilissa To: Andy Subject: Re: Her reply
Andy,
Did you see what she wrote? It seems so... contradictory. How can she say God loves everyone equally and then kind of imply that being nonbinary isn't "right"? How are you feeling about all this?
Stay strong, V
From: Andy To: Naima Subject: Re: Personal Concern and Future Actions
Naima,
Thank you for your prompt and sincere reply. I find it interesting that while Carpatescu never asked me to give up my identity, it appears Yahweh and His followers do. It seems like a simple enough request: acceptance. And it's a little difficult for me to align with beliefs that would rather I suppress my true self.
More than this, I plead with you, Naima. If your God and His people intend to fight, I hope you reconsider. Not because we're scared – we are, but you should be, too. I am confident in our strength and capabilities We can kick your butt and we will if we must. But I genuinely don't want any more suffering or hurt. I don't wish that upon anyone, not even those who might not accept me wholly. The world has seen enough pain. Let's not add to it.
Take care, Andy.
From: Vassilissa To: Andy Subject: Re: Your reply to Naima
Andy,
That was a strong response. Whatever happens next, know that I'm here with you. We're in this together.

Naima never answered, and both Vassilissa and Andy eventually went to bed.
