Chapter 34

Christina jumped when she felt someone touch her shoulder as she was deep in thought on what she had discovered. She let out a sigh when she saw it was Sam who had saw her from where his mother's headstone was.

"Sorry," Sam said with a chuckle. "Didn't mean to scare you."

"You're fine... my heart didn't explode so we're good." She forced a smile as she turned and looked over at the perfect circle of dead vegetation. They both turned when Dean walked over looking a little confused as he kept walking past and headed for the Impala.

"What did he say?" Christina asked as they walked through the rows of headstones.

"Angela Mason. She was a college student whose funeral was three days ago." Dean said taking a sideways glance over at Sam who had gone through something similar with his girlfriend Jessica. "Nobody could come up with a good explanation as to why the plant life is dead."

"Maybe the Groundskeeper went a little heavy with the chemicals." Sam came up with a shrug.

"No this isn't from any chemicals." Christina said as she still had a small sample of the grass and dirt. "Chemicals wouldn't kill sink so low into the ground." Both of her brothers gave her a look as if to ask her how she knew. "I grew up on a farm before I was on my own. I remember having to spray down the crops with chemicals and I accidentally killed like an eighth of our crops." The boys saw her slightly flinch but she cleared her throat and started her conversation again. "So when we, dug up the dead plants to prepare for the next harvest, the damage only went down to the roots and maybe down a pinkie length down. Here, it's down maybe four to six feet that it killed the tree."

"Deep enough for a casket." Dean concluded. "So something made the ground unholy, and whatever did this, did so properly."

"So did we just stumble on a hunt?" Sam asked when they arrived at the Impala.

"We just may have, Sam." Dean said sliding into the driver's seat. "And we are going to figure this one out." Dean had started the car just as his siblings climbed into the vehicle and took off once both doors were closed.

Dean stopped at a decent looking hotel and walked inside to get a room. He returned a few minutes later and the three walked into another nameless hotel rooms they'd all grew accustomed to, and settled in. Sam took out his laptop and began to search up any information on Angela Mason, the young college girl who tragically passed away and why her gravesite was now unholy.

"So Angela died in a car accident just a week ago and it was subject to drunk driving as she had recently broken up with her boyfriend, Matt." Sam read the article. "Her father works at the college as a professor of Ancient Languages."

"Great place to start." Dean said adjusting his shirt and jacket. "What excuse could we use on Professor Mason? I know he wouldn't easy talk about her if we brought her up."

"We could be some friends from out of town, who never received word that she had passed until a few days ago and decided to come and share our condolences with her father." Christina offered trying to think of a quick and easy excuse, as the state the vegetation was at the grave site had her mind mostly occupied trying to figure out what have caused it.

"It's actually not a bad idea, Christy." Dean said giving her a nod of approval. "It's better then anything I can come up with."

"I'll stay here and continue to do research." Sam offered already typing on his laptop. "That way we can get this solved quickly."

"Good idea," Dean said hoping not to sound sarcastic. "We'll see about getting some answers at her apartment and then we'll see what else we need to do."

"If something happens while we're out let us know." Christina added just having a cut feeling. Sam nodded without looking away from his computer while Dean and Christina left the hotel room.

"A deals a deal." Dean said when they walked to the car and climbed inside. "What do you want to know?"

"About what?" Christina asked, taking a moment to rearrange what had happened that day. "About Dad and you having to kill Sam?"

Dean nodded and sighed. "I know I said I'll explain everything when we could do it alone. But dad, honestly, didn't tell me why Sam might turn evil. None of this made sense when he told me in my hospital room."

Christina sat back and took in what Dean had said. She cleared her throat as a small nervous reaction to uncomfortable news and didn't know how to handle. "But we won't have to worry about that." Christina said with confidence. "Sam's not going to turning evil so we'll not worry about having to kill him. Even if the Yellow eyed son of a bitch is after him." She noticed the shocked look on Dean's face. "What? Do you not remember back at that house we stayed before the accident? When the demon had possessed, Dad, he mentioned something about taking Sam and leaving us alone."

"I don't remember all of that to be honest. But I'm not going to second guess what you said. It was a little hazy after being pushed against the wall. But I thought I remembered him talking to you like you promised to hand him over too."

"I never promised that to anyone. Okay you want me to tell you what he did to me? I was sent to a very tiny town in Utah for a possible case. One week of jumping from hotel room to hotel room, in the only town, for nothing but a complete waste of my time. Then on my last night, Yellow-Eyes walked into my room claiming to be a maintenance worker for my ac. He smelled off. After I called him out, he attacked. Said that I was close to finding my family, that he should have known I survived that fire at my apartment. That I would find my brothers again. I don't remember if he said who you two were exactly but he said that he gave me this information so that I'd one day hand one of them to him when the time called for it. That was all that was said."

"That's messed up that he gave you all that just for Sam. Now why would he want Sam?"

Christina sat back in the seat and thought hard. "What if Sam has something in him that he wants. I mean he did kill Mom when Sam was six months. So maybe it had to do with that. Maybe Sam's the key to some ultimate power and he needs Sam to be evil to access it."

"Well he does have gifts or powers." Dean said seeing a sign for the college as they drove. "Maybe that's why he wants him. But he's not taking Sam over my dead body. He's sure as hell not making him evil."

"And now you won't have to save Sam by yourself. Like you told me back Lenore's place, I'm stuck with you and Sam for life. Same goes to me. You're stuck with me for life too."

"It's nice that you have my back on this. Feels a lot less stressful when I don't have to do it myself."

"Did Dad teach you to take on everything by yourself?" Christina asked as Dean was now in the college parking lot and was surprised at how quickly they drove there.

"He was hardly around so I had to." Dean confessed finding a shaded place in the parking lot. "But he told me Sam was my responsibility when he was away and we didn't have anyone else to help watch us."

"Well, you did do a great job. I mean before finding out everything, Sam told me that you practically raised him by yourself. He was extremely proud of that, you were there to celebrate when he graduated from High school. He also said you did kind of wish that he could have a normal life and when he got a scholarship to Stanford you said you were proud of him, but I guess when Dad heard he was leaving you didn't back him up."

"Sadly that's all true." Dean said as they walked around the campus. "But I was always proud of him."

"Well, let's keep it that way. Dad may not have been the father of the year but Sam does have us in his corner. So I'm sure Sam wouldn't be a problem keeping on the straight and narrow."

"Love the positivity." Dean chuckled and stopped at a large red building. They spent the next few minutes asking students if they knew where to find Angela's father, and they were lead to a small office on the far end of the building.

Dean was the one that knocked as he sent a few death glares over at a few college boys who were giving Christina a flirtatious smile. Christina did the same as a few college girls winked and chuckled as they walked pass.

"May I help you?" An older gentleman who looked to be trying to be professional even though his eyes were cold and saddened.

"Professor Mason?" Dean offered his hand which the older man took. "May we speak in your office? We are friends... sorry were friends with your daughter, Angela. We were hoping to share a few memories about her as we were not informed about her passing until just a few days ago."

Professor Mason hesitated for a few minutes and allowed the two into the room. He motioned for a couple of low back chairs in front of a large desk, which the two accepted and sat down. "Forgive my hesitation," he said after he closed the door and took his seat on the other side of them. "Her passing is still rather new and I fear people would give nothing but bad memories about my daughter."

"Well you won't have to worry about us, Professor Mason." Christina smiled. "We have nothing but good things. Which is why we drove all this way from Colorado to say our goodbye and to check up on you."

Professor Mason nodded his acceptance as he finally sunk into his chair. "How well did you know Angela? I don't remember my daughter ever talking about a group of friends who moved to Colorado."

"Oh we kind of had a falling out, as we left the state to go to College in Colorado." Christina said quickly. "I have family in Colorado and thought it would be cheaper to bunk with them while I went to school instead of having to pay rent."

"That makes sense." Professor Mason nodded and began to look a bit relaxed as if he hadn't been able to since loosing his daughter. "So how did you hear about Angela's death if you two had a falling out?"

Christina shared a look at Dean and when he shook his head she cleared her throat. "I heard it from her roommate. We went back a ways and kept in touch. But when she said that Angela had passed I had to come and share my condolences."

Professor Mason nodded slowly and cleared his throat. "As much as I would love to continue this conversation, I need to get back to my class which starts in a few minutes. Is there anything I can do before we part ways?"

"Yes, would you mind giving her the address to Angela's apartment? She was told by her roommate that something was left for her." Dean said and was happy to see Professor Mason grab a piece of paper and quickly wrote out an address. "Thanks for this, Professor. I do share in your loss."

"Thank you for stopping by. I hope you two have a rest of a good day."

"You as well, Professor Mason." Christina added before Dean gently pulled her down the hallway, away from the Professor's office. "Nice job staying quiet for most of that meeting." Christina teased as they walked out. Dean glared at a few college boys as they winked and smiled at Christina, who was too busy looking over the piece of paper to notice them.

"I was busy looking around the room." Dean said as they walked down the sidewalk to his car. "He had a lot of items I swear I've seen in an occult book at Bobby's."

"That's something to look into back at the hotel." Christina said as she climbed into the front seat. "I'd like to speak with the boyfriend and any other friends she might have. I just have this feeling we're not getting the whole picture."

"I mean if anyone has the inside scoop it should be her roommate." Dean said as they pulled away from the college. "So let's switch gears if you don't mind." He had just realized he never got to know a lot of his sister as they were often too busy to talk. "How long have you actually been hunting?"

Christina went quiet as she began to think. "I was fourteen when I started hunting. Though I was mostly just an apprentice. I mean I was super green, and looking back I should have died several times over." She chuckled a little as all the times popped into her head. "But I started hunting alone after I met Gordon. He kind of ruined any kind of trust to work with others. That was until I met Bobby."

"How did you end up meeting Bobby. I mean I did hear he adopted some girl but I never heard how." Dean stated as they pulled to a stop light.

"I met him in January of my sixteenth year. I was injured on a hunt, and instead of going to a hospital I wrecked in front of his house. He thought I was trying to break into his shop. But he saw that I was injured so he took me in and patched me up. He kept thinking I was bitten by a werewolf but I kept saying it was a momma bear that was protecting her three cubs. He then figured I needed a place to stay and to be looked after so he started the adoption process. Then I got adopted on my sixteenth birthday. He and I went on a few hunts together and I even managed to graduate two years early from high school."

"I never saw him as sentimental. He kept telling, Dad..." Dean stumbled with the word "dad" but cleared his throat to continue. "When Dad would drop us off at Bobby's, Bobby kept saying that never wanted to have kids. Kept saying he was happy he never had kids."

"It wasn't that he didn't want kids, ever." Christina said looking at her brother with soft eyes. "He was just tired of you two always fighting. I grew up as an only child so I never had anyone to fight with. I mean I had friends but we fought over trying to get dance captain."

"You were in dance?" Dean asked trying to picture Bobby dressed up for a dance recital amongst parents.

"Yeah from the ages of eight and twelve." Christina said, and as if she could hear his inner monologue added. "So Bobby never had to come to a recital."

"It's scary how you can read my mind." Dean said with a chuckle. "Are you sure you're not physic?"

"Pretty sure." Christina answered as Dean slowly pulled up in front of a cute little attached house. "Just took an educated guess as we were talking about Bobby and dancing. So it was luck." She climbed out before Dean could say anything else. She casually walked up the sidewalk. Dean quickly walked up to her turning his head to make sure nothing jumps at them as they walked up to the door. Christina gently jiggled the handle and found it locked. She looked over her shoulder at Dean who stood in front of her as Christina quickly unlocked the door.

The door quietly swung open and both siblings walked in very casually. As they softly closed the door they heard something clinking against each other. Both siblings froze and slowly moved through the house as Dean reached for his pistol. When they rounded the corner a young girl with auburn hair turned the corner causing her to scream and as well as Christina. Dean just jumped and quickly dropped his shirt so that it covered his gun.

"Uh... hi?" The girl asked when she picked up a box from the floor. "May I help you?" She watched as the two stared a look before placing her free hand on her hip. "If you don't talk right now, I'm going to call the police to report a break-in."

"I'm an old aquaintance of your late roommate." Christina said quickly after she remembered the lie she told the father. "I was just here to grab one thing that Angela said I can have since I gave it to her."

The roommate sighed and nodded slowly. "That's fine. Sorry been on the edge lately."

"It happens when it come to loosing someone close to you." Dean said speaking from experience.

"I see. Well her room was right here. Call if you need anything."

"Alright... sorry what was your name?" Christina asked as she headed towards the room.

"Right, sorry. My name is Lindsey."

"Thanks Lindsey. Also do you know where Angela's boyfriend lives? We'd like to speak to him."

Lindsey's face paled as she slowly sat down on the couch. "Matt... Matt killed himself last night."

"That's... hard to hear." Dean said slowly walking over and sitting down to gently rub her back which Lindsey lean into the touch. "Hey, why don't you talk to me while she goes in and grabs her one thing." Dean said shooting Christina 'personal space while I try and worm my way with the girl' making his sister roll her eyes and head into the room to look for clues.
