Chapter 10—Adam's Dream
{Flashback January 31st, 1987}
Third person POV
"Mom the twins are finished with their snack, can we go ice skating?" Ollie asked.
"Yes sweetheart, just take them one at a time and you be careful on that ice. What do you do if you notice it's starting to crack?" Seraphina said.
"Get them off the ice immediately and lay down and crawl to shore," Ollie said.
"Good boy, go and get some warm clothes on," Seraphina said.
"Yes mother," Ollie said.
"Isabella and Adam get some warm clothing on so you can go skating, with your brother," Seraphina said.
"Yes Mommy," Bella said with a smile to her face as she hopped down off the chair to the kitchen island.
"Mommy you coming with us?" Adam asked with big deer-like eyes.
"No, Adam sweetheart you know that I can't skate. But the three of you have fun, okay?" Seraphina said and then she kissed Adam's cheek.
"Yes mommy," Adam said, then he finished his cup of milk and hopped down off the chair that was next to Bella's chair and ran upstairs.
"Last one to the ice is a rotten egg," Ollie yelled as he went quickly down the steps and ran out towards the back door.
"Hey WAIT FOR ME!" Bella screamed from the top of the stairs.
"BELLA no screaming in the house, your daddy is trying to study," Seraphina said.
"Sorry mommy. Did Daddy like the drawing I made?" Bella asked.
"I don't know you would have to ask him," Seraphina said.
"How can I? The door to his office is closed?" Bella said.
"I know, maybe you can ask him later," Seraphina said.
"Ok Mommy," Bella said.
"I am going to beat you Bella," Adam said.
"No, you're not," Bella said and ran outside tugging on her My Little Pony snow boots and grabbing her skates from out of the deck box.
An hour later Phillip is out on the deck smoking a smoke or two. Seraphina joins him on the deck.
"You know I don't like that Phillip," Seraphina said.
"I know, but I am not doing it in front of the kids," Philip said as he took a drag on the smoke.
"Phillip," Seraphina said.
"Sera, sweetheart I am trying to quit. I really am, but you know how hard it is to quit. You had a hard time when you were pregnant with Ollie," Phillip said as he crushed the smoke on the deck and stuck it in the coffee tin he had outside.
"For the month after I found out about him. Of course, it was a stressful time in both of our lives," Seraphina said.
"Yeah," Phillip said and then shakes another smoke out.
"You are stressed, what is the matter Phillip?" Seraphina asked.
"It's Professor Burkhart, I swear to God she hates me," Phillip said as he was lighting his smoke.
"What's wrong?" Seraphina asked.
"It's nothing," Phillip said and then took a drag.
"No, it's not nothing Phillip Anthony Banks," Seraphina said.
"Alright I don't understand what I have to study Wrongful Convictions. What makes it worse is what Burkhart expects of us. It feels like I am wasting my time and the more time I spend with it the more frustrated I get with it and then I get more and more stressed about it and then…"Phillip started.
"Phillip take a break from it. You know that you are just stressing yourself out more and more," Seraphina said.
"DADDY WATCH ME!" Bella screamed at him from the ice.
"I'M WATCHING ACE!" Phillip yelled back hiding the smoke behind his back.
Bella did a few tricks on the ice and a smile began to tug at Phillips' lips.
"Go and join them Phil take a break from schoolwork for a little while. Your kids are growing up without their father," Seraphina said.
"I need to finish my work," Phillip said and then took a long drag on the smoke.
"I saw you and I saw that smile on your lips with Issy. Take a break, you don't want your kids in 20 years say to their psychiatrist that it was your fault that they are messed up because you didn't spend time with them," Seraphina said.
"Sure, then maybe I should quit law school all together, sell the house, move back into the projects where I go to work for Ford, making cars is that what you want Seraphina? To be broke again?" Phillip asked, taking another drag on the smoke.
"No, but I see that my husband is frustrated, and my kids miss their dad. I mean the twins are 4 and Ollie is 10, it's not going to be long, and they are going to be grown up and gone. If you're not around they might not come home when you have retired because they are going to be busy raising their own kids and dealing with their own jobs. Then they will have grown up to be just like you. You told me when Ollie was first here that you would be there for everything, so you don't end up like that father in Cat's In The Cradle song. Take a break Phillip. Enjoy your kids," Seraphina said.
Philip took a long lingering breath before he said, "Your right." He then crushed out the smoke and stuck it into the coffee can.
"That's my husband," Seraphina said as she handed him the last pair of skates in the deck box, his.
"Hey kids," Philip said as he got down to the pond.
"Daddy you coming to skate?" Bella asked.
"Yeap for a little bit Ace," Phillip asked.
"Can you help me, please? My laces keep getting untied," Adam said.
"Sure Adam, Hang on a few minutes while I change into my skates," Phillip said.
"I am so tired of lacing up his skates, he needs Velcro or something because he keeps untying them," Ollie said.
"I DON'T NEED VELCRO, VELCRO IS FOR BABIES," Adam yelled.
"Which is what you are," Ollie said.
"Alright boys that's enough," Phillip said.
"Baby," Ollie said.
"PTTTTT," Adam said sticking his tongue out
"Are you working on your shots Ollie?" Phillip asked as he started to lace up his second skate.
"How can I when I am forced to babysit these two? At least Bella skates like a decent player and I can't get Adam to quit playing with the laces," Ollie said.
"Oliver Phillip cut him a break, he is only four," Phillip said.
"Well, it's true, I even tried a triple knot and he even got that out," Ollie said.
"Because you won't play with me," Adam said.
"Because you will break my stick," Ollie said.
"Oliver if your stick breaks, we will get you another one," Philip said.
"I knew I should have asked for an Aluminum stick," Ollie said.
"I WANT TO PLAY," Adam yelled.
"I promise if Adam breaks your stick we will get you another one," Philip said.
"Before my game against district 5 on Tuesday?" Ollie asked.
"Yes before your game against district 5," Phillip said.
"Here Adam," Ollie said as he handed his stick.
"Thank you.' Adam said as he stood, 'WOAH!" then he landed on his butt.
"See he can't even hold a stick and keep his balance for five seconds. He is just a loser and a baby," Ollie said.
"I am not a baby," Adam said from the ice.
"I at least keep my balance," Ollie said.
"Daddy are you watching?" Bella asked.
"Yeah, I am watching," Phillip said.
"She has a better shot at getting on the Hawks then Adam does, loser," Ollie said.
"I am not a loser," Adam said.
"Oliver go work on your shots," Phillip said.
"What are we going to do daddy?" Adam asked.
"Son you and I need to work on your balance, I think that Issy is doing fine on her own," Phillip said as he helped his youngest son up.
An hour later, Seraphina comes down to the pond.
"Mommy look at me, I am getting good," Adam said about 30 minutes earlier Phillip and Adam let go of each other and Adam started to skate like a normal person.
"I see that Adam," Seraphina said.
"You coming to skate with us, Mommy?" Bella asked.
"No, I wanted to get you four, it's dinner time, are you hungry?" Seraphina asked.
"It's 5:30 already?" Phillip asked.
"Yep, but I want a picture of this before you go chasing each other into the house," Seraphina said.
"Oh, Mom do we have too?" Oliver whined.
"Oliver it will take two seconds," Seraphina said.
Philip and Oliver lined up with Adam in front of Philip and Bella in front of Oliver. Then there was an action shot of the four of them getting ready to play together.
January 17th, 1989
Adam and Bella were now 6 years old and in the First Grade at Land of Lakes Country School. Ollie was now in the 7th Grade at Land of Lakes Country School playing for the Edina South View Middle School. Adam and Bella were on the ice after dinner that evening working on some drills that Coach Riley had given them. Adam had control of the puck and went to aim it for the garbage can out on the pond. He wound up and completely missed the puck.
"COME ON ADAM YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE A STAR. YOU CAN'T BE A STAR IF YOU CAN'T SHOOT THE PUCK!" Phillip yelled at him.
"Phillip, maybe he is not cut out to be a hockey player," Seraphina said.
"NO ALL MY KIDS ARE CUT OUT TO BE HOCKEY PLAYERS. I WON'T HAVE A SISSY," Phillip yelled back.
Adam started to cry.
"Adam darling," Seraphina said.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU CRYING FOR? YOUR A HOCKEY PLAYER NOT A SISSY!" Phillip yelled.
"Adam here try again," Bella said as she handed Adam the puck.
"Phillip, he will find something else, maybe he would like the piano, instead," Seraphina said.
"SERAPHINA SHUT UP! YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED HIM TO BE THE NEXT LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN, HE IS A SISSY! ADAM IS TOUGH A HOCKEY PLAYER!" Phillip yelled.
Adam placed the puck down by his feet and wiped the tears from his eyes.
"Come on Adam you got this," Bella said.
Adam took the puck and started to skate down to the goal. He took a shot; it went wide again.
"NICE FAN, SPAZ MAYBE YOU WILL GIVE THEM A COLD!" Phillip yelled.
"I QUIT!" ADAM YELLED throwing his stick down and then charging for the house.
"I WON'T HAVE A QUITTER EITHER! GET BACK HERE ADAM JONATHAN BANKS" Phillip yelled.
Adam took off his skates upon reaching the back deck and threw them on the ground for good measure.
January 19th, 1989
"I'm home," Phillip said.
"Hello Darling, your home early. What's the special occasion?" Seraphina said and then she kissed him.
"What can't a guy come home early one day? Who are you shacking up with, on the side?" Phillip asked.
"Just the mailman. Phillip I have known you for thirteen and ½ years and I have never not once known you for coming home over 2 hours early," Seraphina said.
"What do you mean you are shacking up with the mailman?" Phillip asked.
"You asked. Would it be better if it were Jack Riley?" Seraphina asked.
"That is plain, sick. Really you and the mailman?" Phillip asked.
"No," Seraphina said.
"No?" Phillip asked.
"Because our mailman is a woman," Seraphina said and then laughed.
"Hardy Har Har," Phillip said as he rolled his eyes.
"Besides I have known you have been home for over 15 minutes, what are you doing out there?" Seraphina said.
"I have a surprise for the kids, where are they?" Phillip asked.
"Upstairs doing their homework, like they should be," Seraphina said.
Phillip started to head for the stairs in the front entrance, where their bedrooms were. Since the Boys' bedrooms were over there Master Bedroom.
"Phillip, it's a school night," Seraphina said.
"I know that.' Phillip said and then he yelled, "KIDS GET DOWN HERE I HAVE SOMETHING TO SHOW YOU!"
"Phillip what did you do?" Seraphina asked.
"Something I should have done a long time ago," Phillip said with a crooked smile.
"Yeah Dad," Ollie said.
"DADDY!" Bella said and flew into his arms.
"Hi Issy baby," Phillip said.
"Is it a pony, do I get a pony daddy?" Bella asked.
"No, but it's something for all three of you. Especially for you Adam," Phillip said.
Adam rolled his eyes. He was starting to pick up the little snot nosed behavior that Ollie exhibited from time to time.
"What is it Daddy?" Bella asked.
"Well, it's to help the three of you out, go get your boots and coats on and I will meet you in the garage. You too Sera," Phillip said and then he walked away humming "Eye Of The Tiger."
"What's he talking about mom?" Ollie asked.
"I have no idea Oliver," Seraphina said as the four of them went to the laundry room to get boots and coats on.
"Come on, come on, come on, come on. Anybody recognize that?" Phillip asked.
"It's a goal Daddy, duh," Bella said.
"Correct Issy my dear," Phillip said as he opened the trunk of his car.
"Phillip what is the meaning of this?" Seraphina asked as she crossed her arms.
"I got the idea from Ralph at work, you know how his kids were always taking shots at the goal they had in their driveway?" Phillip asked.
"Yeah until the youngest moved away to college last August," Seraphina said.
"Well Adam I want you to meet your new best friend," Phillip said as he pulled out a 4-foot wooden cut out of a goalie.
"My new best friend?" Adam asked slowly.
"Meet Goalie the goalie, I thought that you three could use him for practice," Phillip said.
"Phillip! How are they supposed to carry that thing?" Seraphina asked, referring to Adam and Bella.
"Well, I thought that Ollie and you might have to help them set it up when they want to practice. But eventually they will be able to carry out from the garage to practice by themselves. It only weighs like fifteen pounds," Phillip said.
"They barely weigh 45 pounds, they struggle to carry a gallon of milk," Seraphina said.
"Looks old Dad and beat up," Ollie said.
"Yeah but a new coat of paint and it will be just like it was brand new. The oldest got it when he was Adam's age," Phillip said.
"And that was how long-ago Phillip?" Seraphina asked.
Phillip shrugged before he said, "15 years ago maybe."
"He doesn't even have a mask," Ollie said.
"That's okay we will get him one. Ralph and Loraine could not find the mask. In fact, I might have one in my stuff somewhere," Phillip said.
"Phillip I am more interested in getting my children to learn how to read. Now they have homework to do, you can box up that thing and take it back to Ralph tomorrow morning," Seraphina said as she turned to go back into the house.
"Look, look, look ,Seraphina it will be fine,' Phillip said as he got in front of Seraphina, 'I am just trying to get our son to give hockey another shot. Please babe," Phillip then rubbed her arms in the spot that got her to give in.
"Adam said that he doesn't want to play ever again. And I am inclined to believe him," Seraphina said.
"Give me a month to work with him, see if I can't re spark that love for the game," Phillip said.
"Phillip I said no," Seraphina said.
"Twenty days. If in twenty days Adam doesn't want to play hockey, I will drive him to his first piano lesson," Phillip said.
"NO PHILLIP. Adam made his decision, it's final," Seraphina said.
"Two weeks. Bella what do you think?" Phillip asked.
"DON'T YOU DARE DRAG ISSY INTO THIS," Seraphina said.
"I like him Mommy, I think he's kind of cute," Bella said.
"You would," Ollie said.
"See Bella likes him, and Adam will too. You just have to trust me Seraphina," Phillip said.
Seraphina rolled her eyes before she said, "Fine two weeks and then it goes back to Ralph."
"You won't regret this Seraphina," Phillip said.
"Whatever, kids, let's get that homework done," Seraphina said. The kids all started to follow Seraphina in the house.
"Adam, Come here," Phillip said.
"Yes Dad?" Adam asked.
"Where's your stick I thought we might get a few practice shots in?," Phillip asked.
"I don't know, I quit, remember?" Adam said.
"Well go and find Bella's stick, I will buy you a new one, hopefully the old man will be open late," Phillip said.
"I don't want to do this. I want to go and do my homework," Adam said as he turned for the house.
"Adam please I promised your mom two weeks, I think that in the two weeks that you can improve. If you improve you could be great. Adam I am going to come home every day after school and we will work together," Phillip said.
"What if I don't want to?" Adam whined.
"Adam I promise you if you give Hockey one more shot and don't like it at the end of the two weeks I will go with you and find whatever you have your passion in. I love you son," Phillip said.
Adam rolled his eyes before he said, "Fine."
"Great, I think that I see Bella's stick in the corner of the garage. Go and grab it, there has to be a ball or a puck around here. Ah this will work," Phillip said as he grabbed a tennis ball.
"Fine," Adam said as he grabbed Bella's stick.
Phillip and Adam spent an hour in the driveway practicing with the tennis ball.
"Between the Goalie's legs he scores," Phillip said and then gave his smiling 6-year-old a high five.
"Phillip it's time for Adam to do his homework," Seraphina called from the door to the house in the garage.
"Ah Mom, a few more minutes? Please?" Adam begged.
"Alright Adam a few more minutes, then you need to do your homework," Seraphina said.
"Thanks mom," Adam said and ran off back to Phillip. Seraphina turns to go back into the house.
"Hey Seraphina, come and watch this. He is getting good," Phillip said.
"Watch this mom," Adam said.
"I'm watching," Seraphina said as Adam took the ball and did a few trick moves and then stuck the ball in the three hole.
"ALL RIGHT!" Adam yelled.
"Great job buddy," Phillip said as he high fived his son again.
"Good job Adam, now homework time," Seraphina said.
"Ok, Mom,' Adam said and then turned to his dad, 'Tomorrow?"
"You bet, 4:40 on the dot," Phillip said.
"It's a date," Adam said as he smiled and then ran into the house.
Phillip picked up Goalie the goalie and brought him into the garage.
"Phillip Ollie has a game tomorrow at 5. How are you going to swing this?" Seraphina asked.
"Oh crap, Well Ollie will have to understand that Adam needs a bit more work than he does at this moment. I will pick Adam up from school if you get Ollie and Bella and then after our lesson we will come and join you at the rink, to watch Ollie's team play," Phillip said.
"You better be there," Seraphina said and then turned into the house.
February 7th, 1990
"HACK, HACK, HACK, HACK," came from a 7-year-old lying on the couch.
"Oh, my poor baby," Seraphina said as she sat down next to him, feeling his head and taking his temperature with the ear thermometer they got last fall.
"Beep, beep, beep, beep" went the thermometer.
"One Hundred and three point five degrees," Seraphina said.
"I'm cold mommy," Adam said.
"I know baby. You get to stay home and rest tomorrow. No school and no hockey," Seraphina said as she placed a blanket on Adam's little body.
"Okay mommy, will Ace be mad?" Adam asked. Coach Riley started calling Isabella "Ace" that fall, after they came back from Hockey camp that summer near Deerwood, Minnesota. Everyone started calling her that during the fall.
"No baby, I hope you don't give it to her," Seraphina said.
"BEEP, BEEP, BEEP!" The microwave went. Seraphina quickly got up and retrieved the microwavable bowl of chicken noodle soup that Adam had requested for. To help settle his tummy. "Here's your soup," Seraphina said as she sat the tray in Adam's lap with the bowl of soup, some oyster crackers and water.
"Thank you mommy," Adam said.
The garage door rolled up, within a few minutes a car turned off its engine and the door rolled back down.
"That would be your father," Seraphina said.
"I'm home where's dinner?" Phillip asked.
"Phillip I have to go to Lunds and Byerly's I will pick up something from there, for us to eat," Seraphina said.
"Why could you not go when the kids were in school today?" Phillip asked.
"Because Land of Lakes called this morning. Adam has the flu, so he is to remain on the couch resting and sleeping. He is eating some soup right now. Bella and Ollie are upstairs doing their homework. Thank God for Phoenix Brockmeier bringing home Bella and Trisha McGee for bringing home Ollie from practice. Any more questions?" Seraphina asked.
"No," Phillip said.
"Good, excuse me," Seraphina said as she grabbed her purse and went out into the laundry room to get her shoes, coat and leave.
"Hi Dad," Adam said.
"Hey Adam," Phillip said walking through the family room looking at the mail for him.
"Mom can you help me with this problem?" Ollie asked from the steps.
"Your mother isn't here, Oliver," Phillip said.
"Oh, can you help me I need help with 39 its 5s to the 2nd power to the 3rd power with 2s- 3t to the 2nd power, I don't understand this," Ollie said.
"NOPE!" Phillip yelled.
"Why not, I don't get it," Ollie protested.
"Because Oliver if you don't do it yourself you will never learn how, GET UPSTAIRS AND FIGURE IT OUT FOR YOURSELF," Phillip yelled.
"UNFUCKING BELIEVABLE!" Ollie screamed as he stomped up the stairs.
"OLIVER PHILLIP BANKS DID YOU DO YOUR 150 SHOTS YET AND WEIGHT TRAINING?" Phillip yelled.
"NO, I HAVE BEEN BUSY WITH MY HOMEWORK FOR THE LAST HOUR" Oliver screamed.
"ARE YOU ALMOST FINISHED WITH YOUR HOMEWORK?" Phillip yelled.
"HACK, HACK, HACK, HACK," Adam coughed.
"YEAH," Ollie screamed.
"GET YOUR HOMEWORK DONE, THEN GET YOUR ASS OUTSIDE AND GET YOUR SHOTS IN, UNDERSTAND?" Phillip yelled.
"Yeah, Yeah, Yeah," Ollie said as he continued up the steps.
"Hi Daddy," Bella said as she got to the steps.
"Hey Issy, baby," Phillip said.
Issy came down the steps and as soon as she reached four steps from the bottom she reached as far forward as she could, and Phillip did the same and she kissed him. Issy then leapt into his arms. Phillip spun around a few times.
"Oh, Issy we are going to have to stop doing that, we make me dizzy," Phillip said.
"I love you, Daddy," Issy said.
"I love you too, Issy how was school?" Phillip asked.
"Fine," Issy said.
"Did you get your shots in?" Phillip asked.
"Not yet, I was working on homework. Mommy said homework before hockey," Issy said.
"And your mother is right. Did you finish?" Phillip asked.
"Yes just got done," Issy said.
"Alright get upstairs and get some warm clothes on and we will get those shots in," Phillip said.
"Yes daddy," Issy said as Phillip released her from his arms.
Soon Bella came down the stairs dressed in warm clothing, "Let's go Adam, take your shots," Phillip said.
"I'm sick, Hack, hack, hack," Adam said.
"I don't believe for one second that you are sick, let's go," Phillip said.
"I don't want to," Adam whined.
"GET UP! NOW YOU LAZY BONES," Phillip yelled.
"Fine!" Adam said.
30 minutes later Seraphina pulled her car up into the driveway and her mouth dropped open when she saw who was outside, Adam, Bella and Phillip.
"PHILLIP ANTHONY BANKS WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING WITH MY SON?" Seraphina screamed.
"HE IS TAKING HIS SHOTS; HE NEEDS TO PRACTICE!" Phillip screamed.
"HE NEEDS TO REST, HE IS SICK," SERAPHINA SCREAMED.
"Mommy I don't feel well," Adam complained.
"Go on into the house Adam, you too Bella," Seraphina said.
"Yes Mommy," Bella said as she followed her older brother into the house.
"HOW DARE YOU! ADAM IS SICK! AND NOW HE WILL BE SICKER, DON'T YOU CARE?" Seraphina screamed.
"HE WAS JUST FINE, HE NEEDS TO PRACTICE IF HE IS GOING TO MAKE IT TO THE NHL ONE DAY," Phillip screamed.
"NOT WHILE HE IS SICK, HE NEEDS TO REST SO HE CAN GET BETTER," Seraphina screamed.
"SERAPHINA!" Phillip screamed.
"NO AND YOU CAN'T SLEEP IN OUR ROOM TONIGHT! YOU BETTER PRAY THAT BELLA DOESN'T COME DOWN WITH IT!" Seraphina screamed as she went into the house.
Phillip wormed his way back into their bed that night. At 3:15 am "Mommy?" asked Bella.
"What is it Bella?" Seraphina asked.
"I just got sick, my tummy hurts," Bella said.
"Like how sick? Did you throw up?" Seraphina asked.
"Uh huh," Bella said.
"Come on up here Bella, you can sleep with us," Seraphina asked.
"What's going on?" Phillip asked.
"Your Daughter is sick," Seraphina said.
"Let me see you, Issy,' Phillip said. And then he felt his hands on his daughter's alabaster skin. 'You don't have a temp, go back to your bed."
"But I'm sick. Hack, hack, hack, hack," Bella said.
"Phillip, get the hell out of my bed," Seraphina said.
"Seraphina Why?" Phillip whined.
"Because I am mad at you, and I have children to care for GET OUT!" Seraphina said.
June 10th, 1994
"He wants to WHAT?" Phillip yelled.
"I told you dad, Coach Bombay got an offer to take the ducks and go to the Junior Goodwill Games and I want to go," Bella said.
"Where are these games at?" Seraphina asked..
"Los Angeles, California," Adam mumbled, while staring down at his food.
"Where Adam?" Seraphina asked.
"LA. Mom the home of movie stars," Bella said.
"Movie stars, huh? I don't think so. You should go to camp," Phillip said.
"Dad come on, we might run into Macaulay Culkin," Bella said.
"Macaulay Culking. What kind of name is Macaulay?" Phillip said.
"Phillip honestly," Seraphina said.
"I am jealous, do you think that Coach Bombay would want to take me out there with you guys as a coaches assistant?" Ollie asked.
"You could ask I guess," Bella said.
"NO, I AM PUTTING MY FOOT DOWN THERE OLIVER PHILLIP BANKS. YOU ARE NOT GOING YOU ARE ON RESTRICTION! AND NEITHER ARE YOU TWO," Phillip yelled.
"Dad," Both Adam and Bella whined.
"Phillip," Seraphina said.
"I can't believe that you are for this Seraphina!" Phillip said.
"I think that my babies should have an opportunity to play, you never know what is going to happen," Seraphina said.
"Yeah, well this would have never happened if you were still with the HAWKS!" Phillip yelled.
"Dad, we wanted to play hockey," Bella whined.
"I can't eat anymore," Adam said, and he ran upstairs.
"Adam," Seraphina said as she started to get up, Phillip looked at her with hard eyes.
"Daddy Please?" Bella said with tears in her eyes.
"NO END OF DISCUSSION! I AM NOT LOSING MY HARD-EARNED MONEY JUST BECAUSE THAT COACH WANTS TO GO PLAY WITH HOLLYWOOD." PHILLIP YELLED.
June 13th, 1994
"This is Steve Jensen," Coach Jensen of Deerwood Hockey camp said.
"Steve it's Seraphina Banks. How are you?" Seraphina said.
"I am good, busy. After all camp starts in 10 days," Coach Jensen said.
"I know that's why I am calling you to talk about Adam and Bella's Camp," Seraphina said.
"Oh, what's wrong," Coach Jensen said.
"Well Adam and Bella have the opportunity to go and play for Team USA at the Junior Goodwill games. The kids want to go, and you know Phillip," Seraphina said.
"He put his foot down," Coach Jensen said.
"Yeap. Anyway, I was wondering if you might have a couple of spots available for their camps later this summer," Seraphina said.
"Well let's see here. When is the Olympics," Coach Jensen said, reaching for a camp roaster book.
"Well training starts today, and the games are July 18th to August 4th," Seraphina said.
"Wow almost 3 whole weeks," Coach Jensen said.
"Yeah I know. That is why Phillip would not even listen to Coach Bombay and that Mr. Tibbles last night. Actually, threw them out of the house," Seraphina said.
"Hmm, that sounds like Phillip," Coach Jensen said.
"I know. I don't know why I married him," Seraphina said.
"Because you were young, stupid, in love and pregnant," Coach Jensen said.
"Thanks Steve like I really needed that reminder," Seraphina said.
"Your welcome. I do have a couple of spots open for the last Bantam Super Select camp on August 14-20," Coach Jensen said.
"That's perfect, because Ollie's camp is that week. What do I owe you," Seraphina said.
"Well as long as you don't tell my wife, nothing," Coach Jensen said.
"Done. Thanks Steve I appreciate this," Seraphina said.
"No problem, you tell them to go for gold," Coach Jensen said.
"You bet, Thanks Steve," Seraphina said.
"We will see you in August, have a good day, Bye Seraphina," Coach Jensen said.
"Bye Steve,' Seraphina said, then she hung up the phone and yelled up the steps, 'Adam, Bella get down here."
"What? Trying to crush another one of my dreams," Adam said as he walked into the family room.
"What's up mom?" Bella asked.
"How would you two like to go to the Junior Goodwill games?" Seraphina asked.
"Really?" Adam asked.
"What about dad," Bella said.
"Don't worry about your father, I will take care of him. Where it hurts in the pocketbook," Seraphina said.
"Does this mean we can go?" Adam asked.
"If you hurry up and get your hockey stuff put together," Seraphina said.
"You start packing our hockey gear, I will get our clothes," Bella said.
An hour and a half later, Taylor Falls Minnesota
"Ace, Banks what are you doing here?" Guy asked.
"We get to play," Adam said smiling.
"All right," all of the ducks except Portman, Gaffney, Dwayne, Wu and Luis said.
"I am glad your husband changed his mind," Mr. Tibbles said.
"Yeah well his mind was changed for him," Seraphina said.
"Go get changed hurry up," Coach Bombay said.
"Alright, Love you kids," Seraphina said.
"Uh Mrs. Banks, I need you to fill out some paperwork for Adam and Isabella," Mr. Tibbles said.
"Of course, as long as you take care of my babies," Seraphina said.
"You bet," Mr. Tibbles said.
July 17th, 1994
"All right Ace and Adam you know what to do, impress the scouts so you can get into Eden Hall, a good college and go pro," Phillip said.
"Yes daddy," Bella said.
"Adam?" Phillip asked.
"Yeah," Adam said.
"Love you Ace," Phillip said.
"Love you too, Daddy," Bella said.
"Good luck son," Phillip said.
"Thanks Dad," Adam said.
July 19th, 1994
Second seeded Team USA Versus tenth seeded Trinidad Tobago
Bella looks up into the stands to see a couple middle aged men in suits and ties with pads and pens in the stands as the team is warming up.
"Look Adam scouts," Bella said.
"Wow," Adam said.
Later during the game
"Hey, ya got a girl in the stands?" Charlie asked.
"No. Scouts, Man. Look at 'em," Adam said.
"Don't worry about scouts, Adam. Just play your best," Charlie said as he elbowed Adam.
Adam turned and looked at Charlie and said, "You sure about that."

Team USA Versus Team Iceland
Third period 10-0 Iceland.
"Here's Banks starts onto the ice… Banks moves along the leftwing side, now moves into the center,' Adam spins around Stahl and Björgmundur, 'A Spinning move! A great move to the blue line. Banks all alone, he shoots. HE SCORES!" The announcer says.
Adam skates around the goal and says, "Yeah, we got one!" putting his stick on the top of the goal.
Sandersson yells and throws his stick down on Adam's wrist. A refs whistle blows, and the ref says to Sanderson "Come on! Relax! Take it easy!"
"Ads are you okay," Bella said as she rushed to her brother's aid while Charlie, Guy and Connie fought off the Icelander.
"Are you okay?" Charlie asked as soon as the Icelander was being escorted to the penalty box.
"I'm fine, I'm okay," Adam said.
"Are you sure?" Bella and Connie asked.
"Yes," Adam said.
"He scored," Charlie said, and Bella whooped.
Adam pulled his wrist out of his glove and looked at it. He knew he wasn't okay.
July 26th, 1994
"Dad?" Adam asked.
"What is it, Adam?" Phillip asked.
"Did you see the game last night?" Adam asked.
"No, I was busy," Phillip said.
"Well, I got hurt, my wrist really hurts," Adam said.
"Yeah, sure it does. Liar," Phillip said.
"I am not kidding, it hurts, I need the information so I can go see a doctor," Adam said.
"YOU NEED TO STOP BEING A BABY. I TOLD YOU TO GET OUT THERE AND IMPRESS THE SCOUTS. THEY AIN'T GOING TO BE IMPRESSED WITH YOUR WHINING! BANKS PLAYERS DON'T GET INJURED, GET OUT THERE, IMPRESS THE SCOUTS AND QUIT BEING A DAMN BABY," Phillip said.
"But Dad I am not kidding, I need to see a doctor," Adam whined.
"NO AND YOUR MOTHER AGREES WITH THIS," Phillip yelled and then hung up the phone.
"JERK!" Adam said as he hung up the phone.
"Adam did you get hurt last night?" Bella asked.
"No, I'm fine. I swear," Adam said.
"I think you need to see Bombay," Bella said.
Adam scoffed before he said, "Like he would care." Adam then brushed her.

In the classroom. All of the ducks can hardly keep their eyes open for the last two days, during class. Michele shakes Luis as he is taking a nap.
"Not my best, not my best," Luis mumbles.
"Luis," Ms. MacKay said.
"Sorry," Luis said.
"What is going on, you have been like this for three days now?" Ms. MacKay asked.
"It's Coach, he has been running us into the ground," Julie said.
"Oh, so that's the deal with you guys nicknaming him Captain Blood," Ms. MacKay said.
"Yeah," Jesse and Guy said.
"This is not like him," Charlie said.
Adam hisses and then winced.
"Adam are you okay?" Ms. MacKay asked.
"I'm fine," Adam said.
"All right, I am not going to get anywhere with you today at all. I am going to end our class here, oh and practice is canceled too. Go home and get some sleep, you are going to need it for tonight's game," Ms. MacKay said.
"All right," the majority of the ducks said as they gathered up their books and stuff.
"I am so tired I am going to sleep for three hours," Bella said as she was leaving the classroom.
"Bella hang back a second," Ms. MacKay said.
Bella gulped and then tried to think what she did wrong now.
"Do you want me to hang back?" Connie asked.
"Yes," Bella said.
After everyone with the expectation of Bella, Connie and Ms. MacKay filed out of the room. "Connie, go on this is between me and Bella," Ms. MacKay said.
"But Ms. MacKay," Connie said.
"Go on," Ms. MacKay said.
"Yes Ms. MacKay. I will be outside if you need me," Connie said and then she left the room.
"What's up?" Bella asked.
"Has Adam complained to you about his wrist?" Ms. MacKay asked.
"No. He was pretty upset after the phone call with dad the other day. I asked him if he was okay and then he said he was fine," Bella said.
"Hmm… Alright get out of here, get some sleep," Ms. MacKay said.
Three hours later.
"All right, let's go!" Coach Bombay said as he walked into an empty locker room.
"Team? Hello?" Coach Bombay said as he walked through the locker room heading for the showers.
"Hey Guys, Hello?" Coach Bombay said as he got to the showers.
"I canceled their practice," Ms. MacKay said.
"What're ya talkin' about? Where are they?" Coach Bombay said.
"They needed a day off. " Ms. MacKay said.
Coach Bombay exhaled before he said, "I need 'em here to practice!"
"Well, they need to rest. You've been running those children ragged. They can barely stay awake in class. They're calling you Captain Blood," Ms. MacKay said.
"I am preparing these kids for battle. Can you understand that? We win the gold, we go on to bigger things," Coach Bombay said as he walked right past her.
"Bigger Things?" Ms. MacKay said.
"That's right!" Coach Bombay said.
"Please! Gordon, It's a game! You said it yourself. Games should be fun. Remember?" Ms. MacKay said.
"So," Coach Bombay said.
"So? That's all you have to say about that is so? Gordon please it is a game that these kids are playing for fun. They have been for a long time you have your head in the clouds, with the press conferences, the meetings with Mr. Tibbles and all of the sponsorship crap that has been going on. You are distracted. So distracted that you miss out on one little thing about Adam," Ms. MacKay said.
"What about Adam?" Coach Bombay asked with concern.
"I think I better show this to you,' Ms. MacKay said as she grabbed some papers out of her bag. 'This is Adam's from before the Iceland game."
"Huh uh," Coach Bombay said.
"This is after, notice the difference?" Ms. MacKay asked.
In Coach's left hand there was a piece of paper in tight cursive words, in his right hand was the second piece of paper where the words were printed and big. With Adam written across the top with a question mark on it in red ink.
"It looks like a Kindergartener did this. How did you know this is Adams?" Coach Bombay asked.
"Process of elimination and I saw him write this with his left hand. His right is the dominant hand. Bella said that he was upset after the phone call with their dad. But didn't want to talk about it," Ms. MacKay said.
Coach Bombay just nodded his head.
July 29th, 1994
"Hey Banks' let's go!" Portman yelled toward the showers.
Adam appears from the showers and says, "Comin' I'll be right there."
"All right," Portman said.
Adam sits in front of his locker, grabs his ace wrap from his bag, makes sure the team is gone, looks at his wrist and starts to wrap it.
"Now just think how you'd play with two good wrists," Coach Bombay said.
"Coach. It's just a little sore. I'm okay," Adam said as he put the bandage away.
Coach Bombay shook his head before he said, "I should have spotted this sooner. Sorry, man, I wasn't doin' my job."
"Coach, I'm fine. I can play, I swear," Adam said as he gets up to grab his jacket.
"Okay,' Coach Bombay said as he grabbed a stick, 'Here. Let's find out."
Adam rolls his eyes before putting his jacket back down in the locker and goes to grab the stick with his left hand.
"The other hand," Coach Bombay said.
Adam grabs the stick with his right hand.
"Now rotate it," Coach Bombay said.
The stick bounces in the hand but Adam can't rotate it and drops it.
"I have to bench you," Coach Bombay said as he shook his head.
"No! You can't do that," Adam said.
"Adam, you could injure yourself permanently," Coach Bombay said.
"You can't bench me. I gotta play. All the scouts are here watching us. This is my shot," Adam said.
"You're young and you're gonna have plenty of shots, believe me," Coach Bombay said.
"But my dad is counting on me," Adam said.
"On us," Bella said, appearing from the shadows.
Coach Bombay sighed before he said, "I'm Sorry."
Adam sits down and Coach follows on a stool.
"Hey, listen to me both of you. My dad worked a lot when I was a kid. So, when he made it to a game. I wanted so bad to score a hundred goals for him. I spent half the game a nervous wreck, my stomach in knots," Coach Bombay said.
"That's how I feel," Adam said.
"Me too," Bella said.
"Before he died, my dad told me that his happiest times were watching me skate on this pond we had behind our house. He didn't need me to score 100 goals for him. He was proud of me 'cause I was his son, and I did my best. I'm sure that's how your dad feels. I know it is," Coach Bombay said.
"Thanks coach," Adam said.
"Yeah," Bella said, wiping away her tears.
"All right. Let's go get that wrist X-rayed. Come on," Coach Bombay said.
Adam reached for his jacket.
"Bella why don't you tell the team to go on without us, we will catch up with them," Coach Bombay said as the three of them were exiting the locker room.
An hour later in the Doctor's clinic
"Well good news Adam, it's not broken, you sprained it. But you are out for the rest of the games," the doctor said.
"Well, that's the way it has to be," Coach Bombay said.

After the game with Russia and meeting Wayne Gretzky.
"Mr. Gretzky wait up," Adam said as he chased him through the halls of the arena.
"Yes, uh," Wayne said.
"It's Adam," Adam said.
"Adam what can I help you with," Wayne said as he shook Adam's right hand.
"Ow," Adam said.
"Adam are you okay?" Wayne said.
"Yeah it's sprained. But I was wondering if you knew a doctor that could help me. I need to play against Iceland," Adam said.
"Adam you should rest that wrist, your young," Wayne said.
"I know but I need a shot to get back at them, Please?" Adam said.
"Adam I don't think that you should be doing what you want. You could hurt yourself permanently and you would have to live with it for the rest of your life," Wayne said.
"Please, I am begging you. There has to be someone that would help me get back at them. They took this from me, I want to get back at them," Adam said with his big hazel puppy dog eyes.
Wayne sighed before he said, "Well all right there is an orthopedic doctor in Beverly Hills named Ken Farstands. He does good things with baboon ligaments.' Wayne said as he fished a business card out of his wallet, 'But I want you to talk this over with your coach before you go to see him, understand?"
"Yes sir," Adam said as Wayne handed him a business card.

Before the title game with Iceland. Adam walks into the Locker room where the ducks are.
"Coach," Adam said.
"Hey Banks," some of the ducks said.
"I woke up and the pain was gone." Adam said showing Coach Bombay that he can rotate a hockey stick now.
"Woah, All right," some of the ducks said.
"Adam, I'm sorry, we already have a full roster," Coach Bombay said after touching Adam's wrist.
"Oh no," Bella said.
Russ started to take off his jersey and Charlie stopped him. "He can have my spot," Charlie said and then we walked towards Adam and Coach Bombay.
"It's what I can do for the team. Let me do it," Charlie said.
"Charlie I need you on the bench, coaching right there with me," Coach Bombay said as he handed Charlie a clipboard.
"Yeah All right," some of the ducks said.
After Adam started to change Bella said, "Is this why you were gone for a few hours yesterday?"
"That's for me to know and you to find out," Adam said.
"I can't believe you went behind my back like that," Bella said.

"Have you three lifted today?" Phillip asked while Ollie, Adam and Bella were eating Christmas dinner.
"Phillip, can we not eat Christmas dinner, first. Before you start talking hockey?" Seraphina asked.
"Yeah Dad, really," Adam said.
"No, you want to get onto the varsity team you need to lift daily," Phillip said.
"I can't wait to leave for France in a few days," Ollie said.
"I can't believe you still want to go to France," Seraphina said.
"It's just a try out, mom," Ollie said.
"But you are just 18, what are you going to do in France?" Seraphina said.
"Play Hockey and make a life for myself," Ollie said.
"I just don't see why you could not give the U another shot," Seraphina said.
"Because studying and me, didn't get along very well," Ollie said.
"That's obvious with your grades. At least Bella made all A's this semester," Phillip said.
"She would," Ollie said.
"You don't like it you can get out now," Phillip said.
"FINE, I'M OUT OF HERE!" Ollie yelled and left the table at once.
After dinner in the gym in the basement.
"I am so stuffed," Adam said.
"Me too, Bertie makes good food," Bella said
"Listen I think that if we hang out down here for a while we will fool the old man," Adam said.
An hour later.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?" Phillip yelled upon reaching the gym in the basement.
"Working out," Adam said.
"NO, YOU ARE NOT, I HEARD YOU! YOU NEED TO QUIT THE PHANTOM WEIGHTLIFTING AND ACTUALLY LIFT IF YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE IT TO THE PROS," Phillip yelled.
"But Daddy, its Christmas," Bella said.
"NO IFS ANDS OR BUTS ABOUT IT! NOW LIFT!" Phillip yelled.

"Phillip!," Seraphina said harshly.
"Yeah," Bella said.
"And you're playing where?" Phillip said.
"Third line," Adam mumbled.
"I'm sorry son what was that?" Phillip asked.
"Third line he's center. I'm right wing," Bella said.
"Good you could do without those losers," Phillip said.
"They are not losers, they are our friends," Adam said.
"They should not even be going there. I am just glad that coach of yours is out of the picture, maybe you will actually learn something," Phillip said.
"PHILLIP!" Seraphina said.
"At least the tradition continues," Phillip said.
So, What do you think? Please take 5 minutes and leave a review! Thanks in advance!
