The dart exploded out of the Stargate at a velocity it normally would not be capable of. It screamed thru the air as Sheppard fought to retain control of it. Finally, he managed enough control to make a close pass over the ground and deposited the group on the ground. After which, he managed a barely controlled landing. But as they say, any landing you can walk away from, is a good landing. He made his way to the others, somewhat limping, as his leg had been wrenched in the landing. Nothing was broken, but it definitely was messed up.
When he got to the group, he noticed they seemed upset.
"What's up?" He asked.
"Check out the Stargate." Xander said.
Sheppard took a close look and then looked again. The symbols seemed...strange. "What's wrong with the symbols?" He asked. "And the color?" This Stargate was green.
"They're different from any of the symbols on either the Milky Way 'gates or the Pegasus 'gates." McKay said. "And the constellations are wrong. Somehow, we ended up in another galaxy. One of the blasts from the Wraith ship must have hit the Stargate just as we entered it. A surge of power has been known to cause Stargates to behave strangely."
"Another galaxy? How are we going to get back?"
"We need alot of power. But the bigger problem is that while we have galaxy addresses of both the Pegasus 'gates and the Milky Way ones, we don't have an origin point for this one. I'll write a program to calculate the possibilities, but it's still going to take time. We're going to be here for awhile, I'm afraid."
"Any idea how long?"
"Couple of days, maybe. Permanently, if we can't find enough power. Channeling lightning might be enough. We'll have to figure that out after, first I need to come up with an origin point."
"Then get started on it. In the meantime, we need to make camp. I saw a lake, maybe a mile from here, there'll probably be fish. Can your sense of smell tell if the food is poisonous to us?" He asked Xander.
"If we were on Earth, I'd say yes. We'll have to test it with anything we catch. We should get going. We brought enough meal bars for a day for ourselves, but our augmentations give us all a heightened metabolism. We need high calorie, high protein foods on a steady basis or we start to lose weight, fast. The sooner we find out if the fish is any good for us the better."
The lake wasn't far and they soon arrived. The Pack's sense of smell determined that the water was fresh and drinkable. Hopefully, there were no parasites or other organisms that might cause an issue. It wasn't a large lake, but still fairly deep. They found something Sheppard hadn't seen from the air. Signs of civilization. The lake had a dock. Metal, sturdy and maintained. Somewhere, not far away, were people. Of some sort anyway.
Ronan built a fire as Xander got a branch from a nearby tree and pulled fishing line from his pack. Having an uncle who gave survival lessons came in handy. Soon he had a line dangling in the water. They'd need quite a few fish for all of them. Between the Pack, Faith and AG 1, they had eleven people. Soon he felt a tug on his line and pulled up a fairly good sized fish. More than twelve inches long. He scented but found it didn't smell any different really then an Earth fish. He handed it to Sheppard, who cleaned it and went back to fishing. Maybe the lake was kept stocked because he managed to catch quite a few in short order.
Soon they sat down to eat. They'd been quietly talking and trying to keep up their spirits when the Pack sensed something, a moment later, so did Faith. Followed by Ronan and Teyla, the rest of AG 1 noticed.
"What's up?" Sheppard asked.
"We're being watched. Something is watching us. I don't feel like I'm being hunted, like I would if it was a wild animal, but it doesn't feel human either." Xander answered. "And it doesn't feel like a demon."
"An alien?" McKay asked.
"Maybe. Something about it also feels like animal. I'm not sure what to make of it."
The feeling passed for a time and then intensified.
"There are more of them now. Several more and they're getting closer." Xander said, just as several large cat-like creatures padded into view. Sheppard raised his P90 to try to scare them away when Xander stopped him.
"I'm going to let you in on one of our augmentation abilities, Sheppard. We have a limited telepathic ability. It's how I kept the Wraith Queen out. I suspect you do to, at least enough to be able to shield your mind. Apparently you've become rather famous among the Wraith for your ability to keep them out. Anyway, our ability only allows a connection with animals. We allowed Dr. Fraser to run tests that confirmed that. Let me see if I can connect with these. They don't seem interested in attacking. It anything, they just seem curious. Most Earth animals have a type of genetic memory. These might too. With a Stargate being here, that means the Ancients were here at one time. I might be able to get some information from them. It's worth a try, at least."
"All right, go ahead."
Xander squatted down until he was eye level with the cat in front. He reached out and gently placed his hand on its head, alert for the possibility of an attack. It took more effort then it would have to connect to an Earth animal's mind and when Xander realized why he abruptly withdrew in shock. Shapeshifter and not demonic. Part alien, part animal.
