Chapter Forty

Saying Goodbye

A few more days went by, and Lilith sat on the roof of her house, she was trying to gather herself to see her parents one last time before she was to leave.

Within the few days that had passed, the police had been searching for her after her parents and friends had reported her missing.

Posters were soon put around the town baring a recent photo of her, and her parents and her friends were asking around to see if anyone had seen her.

It broke her heart as Lilith knew she couldn't tell them she was alive and safe, because she was no longer human.

Seth and Diablo stood with her on the roof and the other Disciples were hiding behind a house further down the street ready to leave when Lilith was ready.

Diablo couldn't help but feel sad for her.

He thought back to when Lilith was hit by the car and he mutated her to save her life, and how she had reacted, he remembered how he had reacted towards Monalisa and Jake when he first mutated.

That niggling feeling of guilt did hit him, that he had been so harsh to them, even though they had saved his life, but he kept pushing it aside, it had been over a year, and he knew there was no going back, even if he did decide he wanted to go back, he knew what awaited him.

Seeing Lilith's heartbroken face, he thought about his own family back in Wisconsin, even though he had left them on bad terms, he wondered if they thought about him? Did you think he was dead, as in a way he did technically die when he was stabbed by the Shredder then mutated by Mutopia's well.

"I wouldn't be surprised if Jake has told them I'm dead." He thought "How else will he be able to explain what's happened to me, and if he wishes to keep Mutopia a secret, he cannot tell them my fate."

After a few minutes, Lilith stood up then walked to the edge of the roof before looking down at the window where her parents' bedroom was.

Part of her didn't want to look, but she wanted to say goodbye.

She moved down towards the window where she heard sobs and talking.

Lilith lowered herself more so she was looking through the window upside down, and she could see her parents hugging each other in bed crying and sobbing.

"Oh, my baby girl!" her mother was weeping "My poor child!"

Her father hugged his wife, yet he didn't know what to say as he was equally devastated.

"Where could she be?" her mother sobbed "First Nigel and now our Angie! What have we done to deserve this!?"

"Janet…" the father whispered as he continued to hug his wife.

"What God is so cruel that both our babies were taken from us? Why? Why? Why!?" Janet screamed.

Lilith winced and quickly pulled her head up and looked to Diablo and Seth who both looked sad.

Diablo as he could hear Lilith's mourning parents knew only too well how devastated his mother and father were when they were told of Monalisa's fate, and he and Jake had felt the same feelings.

Seth chewed his lip as he watched and listened.

"Are you alright Lilith?" he asked.

"I…I don't know…" Lilith said as she twisted her fingers "I can't tell you how much I want to go down there and tell them what's happened to me, and say goodbye, but I know I can't, how will they know it's me, and if they don't recognise it's me behind this form." She stroked her feathered cheek and her beak "They will freak out!"

Diablo looked down.

"I'm sorry I did this." He said, "But we wanted to save your life, even though the outcome for you is heart-breaking."

"It wasn't your fault what happened." Lilith said, "If anything, the fault is mine, I shouldn't have stepped into the road, and got hit by the car."

She stroked her neck and the feathers that were in place of where her hair was.

"If only I could leave a sign…or some message that I'm alright…" she mused, then she looked up as a thought came to her.

Diablo and Seth saw her look and cocked their heads on one side.

"Lilith?" Seth asked, "What is it?"

Lilith didn't answer, instead she pulled out a long thread from her top where it was snagged, and then started to pull out some of her feathers.

As she did, she winced as it was like pulling out bits of her hair, but she chose many different shaped feathers from her body and started putting them on the thread like making a necklace.

Diablo and Seth watched her curiously, then Lilith looked down at the window, spread her wings and hovered outside the window.

Seth and Diablo were worried that she would be spotted, but Lilith lingered by the window and looked inside.

"Be careful." Seth whispered softly.

Lilith looked through the window at her parents as they continued to hug and comfort each other in their grief.

"Oh mum, dad." She whispered softly "Words cannot express how heartbroken I feel that I cannot tell you what's happened to me, I want to tell you, but I can't, and I see the sorrow you feel at what has come to pass."

She placed her taloned hand on the glass.

Her parents' backs were to the window as they continued to hold each other in their grief.

"Mum, dad." Lilith breathed, "I'm so sorry, but because of what's happened to me, I must leave you, believe me when I say I don't want this, especially after the devastation we suffered after Nigel was killed in action."

She looked at the feather necklace she had made then saw the window was open a small crack.

She looked at the necklace she made from the thread and her feathers, in the centre she had used three of her larger feathers from her wings, and the sides she had used the smaller ones from her body.

"This is my sign to you that I'm okay, and maybe you might piece together what has happened, since you were aware of Diablo and what he and his followers did to those Neo Nazi's."

She kissed the necklace then slid it through the crack in the window, then blowing a kiss and waving to her parents, she rose onto the roof.

"Have you said your goodbyes?" Diablo asked.

Lilith nodded as tears fell and Seth instantly ran forward and hugged his friend.

"Trust me Lilith." He said, "We will get through this together."

Lilith hugged Seth tightly as the tears fell.

"Thank you." She whispered.

Diablo sighed again as he watched Seth and Lilith hug each other and a small thought came to him, the last time he hugged Monalisa before he left and betrayed Mutopia.

Part of him in hindsight thought of how things might have been different, and he had hugged his siblings and thanked them for saving his life and how they would get through it together.

But again, he pushed it away, as there was no point nor reason to think such feelings.

"Are you ready to go now?" Seth asked.

Lilith nodded.

"Yes, I am ready." She said, "Let us leave before I change my mind."

Diablo nodded then spread his wings, Lilith did the same and they hovered before Seth took hold of their hands and they lifted him off the roof and flew towards where the other Disciples were waiting.

As they flew away, Lilith looked back at the house and blew a kiss to it.

"Goodbye…I love you so much…"

As Lilith and Diablo flew away with Seth, the window slammed shut and both Lilith's parents looked over.

"What was that?" the father said as he stood up and walked over to the window.

As he did, he saw the feathered necklace and picked it up.

"What is it honey?" the mother asked.

The father stood up and held up the necklace then his wife ran over and saw it.

"What? Where did that come from?" she asked, blinking away her tears.

"I…. I don't know." The father answered then he sniffed it and he suddenly recognised the scent.

The mother too smelt it and they looked at each other and they clasped each other's hands as a realisation swept over them.

"Angela…. Our Angel."

Meanwhile in Mutopia and the New York Lair

Back in Both the New York Lair, and in Mutopia, Jake and Monalisa were speaking to each other via their computers via skype.

Both siblings had been keeping up with the news on Diablo, as his attacks have been newsworthy and so far, everyone still believed he was a costumed raven and when his victims spoke of him, everyone thought they were insane.

Monalisa wiped her tears as she looked at her brother on the other side and Jake looked back, adjusting his glasses.

"So far, we've watched from afar our brother's actions." Jake said, "And from we have gathered, according to the missing persons reports from the small-town Spencer in Tennessee, he had recruited more Disciples."

"How can you be sure?" Monalisa asked.

"I'm not." Jake replied, "But I have a feeling, if the bodies are not found, we can only guess what has happened."

Monalisa sighed and ran her hands over her head.

Jake saw his sister's reaction.

"Whatever has happened, so far he hasn't exposed Mutopia or you and your family's existence in New York." He spoke.

"But when will he slip up?" Monalisa asked.

"If he slips up." Jake corrected "If he does, we'll be ready for him, and if I know Tyroth, if he has a feeling anything is wrong, he will let us know."

"I can only hope." Monalisa said "So far, our brother has not let our existence be known as I remember he promised he wouldn't."

Monalisa felt her heart pound as she thought of Diablo and how he had promised her he wouldn't betray Mutopia's existence if he and his followers were left alone.

But despite what he said, she feared he wouldn't deliver his promise.

"Sis." She heard Jake's voice "No matter what, we will keep tabs on Diablo's actions, and we will be there if or when he slips up."

"I will too." Monalisa replied "He might have gotten away with his actions so far, but whatever happens, should he slip up, whether you hear it first, or us here in New York, we will be ready and waiting for him."

"Promise on our lives!" Jake said as he pointed at the camera and Monalisa did the same, and even though they couldn't feel each other's fingers, they were connected in spirit.

Both siblings couldn't predict the future, they didn't know if Diablo's actions would lead to their homes and existence being discovered, and they hoped that wouldn't be the case, even though Tyroth had said there was an alternative if that was the case, but they hoped against all hope and the powers that be, it would never come to past.

All they could do was continue their lives with new rules and take each day as it came and not for granted.

Whatever happened, or what came their way, they would be ready…..

THE END

So Angela, now Lilith has said her goodbyes to her family in her own way, and Monalisa and Jake have agreed to keep watching out for Diablo, should he slip up or not, they will be ready for him.
