Chapter 16
"Your father's family were Druids. He would never tell me if it was mere chance that he was at the Grille that day, but I suspect it wasn't, even if he didn't know it. His lineage went back to the old country, a long line of practicing Druids. I have a feeling he was an unknowing participant, chosen by the Fae Queen."
"I know he loved her…once and wanted to make the marriage work whether for duty sake or just his love for her, I don't know."
"When she got pregnant with you he was very happy, they both were. But things started to change, I believe that was when the Fae Queen began to communicate heavily with her or maybe she was starting to see things that she hadn't before. She began to get guarded with me on certain topics."
"When you were born we were so happy. I had a nurse take a picture of us while Abby held you and Rudy hugged her and I stood on the other side. I was so very proud. I had thought Abigail was the most beautiful baby I had ever seen but I was wrong. From the moment you looked up at me with those big green eyes, you had my heart and I would do anything for you, anything to protect you."
"As you got older and Rudy worked more, Abigail began to get restless and didn't want to stay home watching a baby. I told him to be careful but he said everything would be fine, but I knew her better than him."
"He stopped being her calming medicine; he was hardly home and so she got restless. You weren't just a doll to play with and she liked getting attention and with you around she wasn't the center of attention, you were."
Sheila's voice hardened and she squared her shoulders, "That is when Abby met Silas at a bookstore, or so she said. Soon she was always calling me to watch you so she could run an errand, I figured out real fast what was going on. When I confronted her she told me to mind my own business and to do what I did best, which was to be your grandmother. That is what I did although in hindsight I should have tried harder to stop that mess."
"That bastard is the one that started filling her head with bullshit. He attended a Christian church, or so he said, and he filled her head with all sorts of things pertaining to demons and hell and being a force for light. Of course she was confused…the things she may have seen…I mean with you being the child you wer -"
"What do you mean Grams," Bonnie interjected interrupting Sheila mid sentence.
Sheila sighed heavily "As a child, you were already something special. You hardly ever cried or got sick, but those were the least of your uniqueness. Your uncanny way of sensing a person's character or intentions and animals were drawn to you, all sorts of animals."
Sheila looked down at her hands, they were a bit withered, but still strong, they marked the passage of time for her. Her hands were bloodied and stained and although there were times when she thought there was no forgiveness for her, all she had to think of was the young woman sitting in front of her.
"Well, anyway, the more time she spent with Silas the more she turned to him and his warped beliefs, spending less time with you. Rudy noticed the changes but remained blinded to what was going on under his nose. To be fair, he tried at first, taking time off to stay home but she was not impressed by his attempts at repairing the fracture in their relationship. And in time he stopped caring about the marriage, but he always loved you even if he didn't know how to express it. I tried to intervene but she used you against me, saying she would keep you from seeing me."
"I stayed busy with work and learning more about "The Order", not that there was much I found, although I later found out that Silas was part of that fucking group of lunatics." Sheila's face reddened and she looked at Bonnie with repentant eyes, "Forgive me child, I shouldn't be using that kind of language around you."
"It's okay Grams," Bonnie gave a warm smile to the woman that she loved as a mother. And in her head she thought. If that was the only thing that I have heard, said or done.
Sheila continued, "If she called I would come, no questions asked. This pattern continued for a few years until Rudy told me that Abby was crazy talking and he had enough. He couldn't control her, he was mentally and physically tired of being her savior."
Bonnie pondered on these words, remembering the horrible things her mother would say to her when left alone with her. As a child Bonnie was saddened by the cruel words not knowing that the real reason for Abby's outbursts were due to her fear and pining for a man other than her husband. Bonnie often cried to herself, wondering what she had done to make her mommy so angry, but now she knew, or at least was getting a fuller picture.
Quickly Bonnie returned from her reverie to continue listening to Sheila.
"I thought that with time Abby would get tired of Silas, but in the end I guess he got tired of her, or maybe he got what he wanted. At any rate he left her in a worse mental state than she had ever been, but now, I am certain that was the point."
"I came to the house one day to talk to her but it turned into a huge fight…
Sheila walked into the house, astonished at what she was seeing. Clothes cluttered the floor, dishes piled high in the sink and dust caked on the wood furniture, pictures and window blinds. Walking around she was worried when she didn't see Bonnie or her estranged daughter. Slowly she walked down the quiet hall, going to the master bedroom. Rudy had been gone for a while so she wasn't worried about seeing him.
She turned the door handle, almost scared of what she might see, but she saw Abby in the bed, dead to the world. Sheila turned to walk out the door, almost running, to find little Bonnie. Bonnie's room was empty and strangely enough clean and tidy with no traces of dust. Bonnie had made her bed and Ms Cuddles laid against the big pillow like a guard. Now very concerned, Sheila picked up the pace walking throughout the house searching for the small child. When she was about to rudely shake Abby out of slumber, Sheila heard a small sound. She paused and heard the soft sound again. Slowly Sheila opened the door that led to the basement, walking carefully down the stairs, holding onto the railing, she moved with purpose. Now the sound was more distinct and she made out quiet giggling.
At the base of the stairs she called out, "Bonnie, are you down here?" Suddenly there was silence, turning the corner she saw her granddaughter quickly turning around and plopping on the floor while another small figure ran away, hiding behind stacked boxes.
I'm not doing nothing Grams," Bonnie stammered, her eyes darting from left to right nervously, but not daring to look at her grandmother.
"First, you need to look at me when I am speaking to you and second, clearly you are doing something, something you ought not be doing. I didn't ask you what you were doing, but you were doing something down here." Sheila's eyes narrowed and her lips pressed together in a then line.
"You chose to answer a question that was not asked, using a double negative which implies that you are indeed up to no good by creating a positive." Bonnie stared at her grandmother with large eyes and a puzzled look on her face. She wasn't sure what Grams meant, but she knew that she had got caught.
Sheila continued to speak, "So now, I will ask you, what are you doing down here Bonnie? And is Caroline down here with you because you know you aren't supposed to be down here".
Looking down, then looking up at her grandmother Bonnie spoke in a small voice. "Mommy said not to."
"What did mommy say not to do and what does that have to do with you being down here?" Sheila inquired, getting a bit flustered with her grandchild again.
"Mommy was tired and told me to go away to play, to leave her alone. I went to my room but I was bored. But I heard someone calling me, so I followed the voice down here and…and we started playing. I thought it would be okay cause I didn't wake up mommy."
Sheila's hard gaze softened, she smiled. "Come out and let me see you." She wasn't sure what she expected to see but it wasn't a little cub-like creature about the same size and height as Bonnie, standing on hind legs. His eyes were golden orbs with thick curly lashes and although he looked like an overgrown stuffed animal he radiated power. In truth he reminded Sheila of the Ewoks in Star Wars, but he was cuter. Sheila stepped back in shock and as she did the creature scurried behind the boxes once again.
"Don't be scared, Grams, he's my friend. He won't hurt you, I promise," Bonnie quickly spoke as she stepped in front of the boxes as if she was protecting him from danger.
Sheila crouched down, "Hush child, I'm not afraid," she smiled at Bonnie, then she turned her head, "Come out no need to hide," she called out to the creature.
"Hello my name is Ms. Sheila, what is yours?" Sheila knew this day would come so she was mostly mentally prepared…mostly. Holding out her hand she waited patiently for the creature to come out. He looked weary, glancing swiftly at Bonnie, she nudged his shoulder and encouragingly smiled at him. When he opened his mouth a foreign language spilled from his lips and Sheila frowned because she could not understand him. She did, rather ignorantly, expect him to speak english.
Bonnie giggled, seeing the expression on her grandmother's face, "Grams he says to call him Peter. It isn't his real name but since I like Peter Pan, he says it is okay to call him that," Bonnie enlightened her grandmother.
Sheila should not have been shocked to know that Bonnie understood the Fae language but it did and for some strange reason it startled her that he could understand her as well. It all was very peculiar indeed.
"Peter you are to never allow Abigail to see you, ever and Bonnie you mustn't tell your mother about Peter or where he is from," Sheila sternly commanded.
"But why Grams, he is my friend," the little girl questioned with a sad face.
"Because sweetheart, sometimes mommies don't always understand things like grams do. So you must never tell your mother or anyone else, okay," she implored as she cupped her round face.
Bonnie nodded, "I promise." She hugged her grandmother and then as she withdrew herself, she took Peter's hand.
Sheila rose, "Good, now that that is settled, you can play for a few minutes more but then you must come up."
Once upstairs Sheila marched into Abigail's room shaking her up with the force of her rage. It was damn near one o'clock in the afternoon and she wasn't up nor had she cared enough to cook something for her own child to eat.
Groggily Abby woke from her sleep not realizing who was waking her, "What the fuck, didn't I tell you not to bother me wh-"
"Are you talking to my granddaughter like that?" Sheila interrupted her voice cold and hard. "Have you lost your right mind?"
"Mom…mom…what are you doing here?" Abby tried to formulate a coherent sentence as she sat upright, using her right arm to flip her hair from her face.
"What happened," now conscious enough to question why her mother was in her house, "Where is Bonnie," panic set in as she realized she didn't hear the small child. She bolted up only to fall back on the bed.
"Now you are worried about your daughter? She is fine, playing right now, but what if she had hurt herself? You have been sleeping all morning. Have you even thought about what she is supposed to have eaten today?" Sheila was furious. She watched her daughter with raging disappointment.
The look in her mother's eye pierced her muddled mind causing guilt to filter in as she realized she hadn't thought of Bonnie. All she wanted was sleep, only sleep helped her to forget her loneliness, only sleeping helped her to forget that Silas was gone. She would do whatever she needed to do to forget.
The fact was that she blamed Bonnie and that made her angry. Angry for having a kid that she really didn't want. Angry for having had to put up with Rudy when she should have ran away with Silas. And now angry because she was alone with neither man and stuck with a child she didn't know how to take care of and didn't much want to. The more she thought about it the more the anger dried up the guilt. And she lashed out.
"You have no right to be in my house and to tell me how to raise my kid. I didn't ask you here so you can find your way out." She hissed.
"Are you insane? You think you are the only woman that had a man leave her? Abigail get your priorities right, you have-"
"I said get out! You leave and let me worry about my child. It's not like you ever worried about me. Thank God for dad. You were a frigid and cold mother and wife. That is why he cheated on you, that is why we were leaving. You ruined everything." By this point Abby was yelling at Sheila.
Sheila watched her daughter grab her robe wrapping it around herself as she spewed the meanest things she could say, wanting to draw blood, wanting to hurt her mother as she was hurting. Sheila stood silent allowing her to verbally attack her.
"If you don't leave I will never let you see her again, never, you hear me? I promise you that. Your precious Bonnie, funny how you can love on her and baby her and dote on her, but your own child…nothing. Well fuck you and on your way out say your goodbyes." Abby finished her diatribe as she was walking past Sheila going to her bathroom and with the last of her sentence she slammed the door in Sheila's face.
When the shouting had started Bonnie ran to make sure her Grams was okay even though Peter tried to halt her. She told him to go home then she ran up the stairs to hear her mommy yelling and saying mean words. She stood with her back against the closed basement door, tears streaming down her face. This is where Sheila found her, she knelt down to and wiped the tears.
"Is mommy going to keep me from you Grams?" Bonnie almost hyperventilated as she cried out the words.
"No, my child. Mommy is just upset with Grams because I woke her up. You never mind all this fuss. I am going to leave so you can spend time with Mommy. Stop crying, you don't want her to think you are upset with her, now do you? Bonnie shook her tiny head. "That's right, give me a big smile."
Sheila gave her a big hug that Bonnie reciprocated. As she withdrew Sheila smiled and tapped her nose, "You remember what you promised, right," Bonnie quickly nodded her head, "Good, I will see you soon. Remember I always love you." "I love you more," Bonnie responded, "I Love you most," Sheila returned, this was their thing that they did. Since the beginning as far back as Bonnie could remember.
Sheila stood up and walked to the front door where Abby was waiting for her with the door opened wide. As Sheila passed by Abby whispered harshly, "Don't ever come here without an invitation." "Uhmm", Sheila made a small guttural sound in her throat, lifted her chin and continued to walk with her head held high. She heard the slam of the door.
Sheila wiped a tear from her eye as did Bonnie. She remembered that incident and now she realized as she looked at Klaus that he was Peter, he was her friend when she had no one else, when she was a lonely little girl. With recognition in her eyes she smiled sweetly at him and mouthed thank you. Klaus smiled and in her head she heard "You never have to thank me, I am yours…always."
Bonnie knew the end of this story was near and she was ready to hear the tragic end, although a part of her thought she knew what was coming. She just hoped that she would be able to handle the truth that seemed embedded in Sheila's past, behind stone walls she did not want to crumble but fate had other plans.
"What happened next Grams," Bonnie asked as she placed her hand on her grandmother's, laying on top of the small table.
Sheila sobbed, unable to control the tidal wave of emotions that were spilling over and out. "I swear that I didn't know the extent of what was going on," she blurted out as she clutched Bonnie's hand. "I stayed away only coming over when she allowed it…when she needed a babysitter. I didn't say much…I was afraid that she would do something drastic."
"I busied myself with work and research…I couldn't lose you and I assumed she would call me when she needed me to pick you up or take you somewhere or when she wanted to go out. But I didn't realize how much her mental capacity deteriorated. I thought…I…I hoped she would be good…" Sheila didn't know what she hoped because the truth was that she knew that Abigail had always been selfish and not mother material, not without a man there giving her the attention that she craved. She could blame her husband and she could blame Rudy, but the guilt set heavily on her shoulders. She hoped that Abby would do better but she dared not intervene. She feared that she would lose Bonnie, but mostly she just didn't have the heart to fight anymore. She was undone by the one greatest desire she once held and yet when she was with Bonnie it was all worth it, the pain, the loss. She loved Bonnie with a love that surpassed her own child, her own life and she couldn't, wouldn't lose her…so she stayed away, thinking that would buy her time for a better course of action.
AN: I ended here because this was a good place to end. Up next we will get the conclusion of this origin story and Bonnie's response. Thank you and please let me know what you think. Byeeeeee
