Tox growled with Shade and Jacob by her side as they stared down the large hill where a human man and his daughter had set up camp. The man was getting things out of a camper van and smiling as his kid happily gathered sticks for a fire. They had been looking forward to this trip all year. The man was sure to choose a campsite like this. It had direct access to fun features such as rocks, trees, and creeks, and there was water flowing nearby that could be a bonus to their stay.
It also seemed like a good spot for fishing.
Both humans were completely unaware of the danger they were in. They didn't know that they had stopped almost right next door to where the pack lived. They didn't even realize that three werewolves were staring daggers at them from the trees. Shade and Jacob looked back at Tox, wondering what she wanted to do since she was the one who dragged them out here in the first place.
"They've invaded our territory; there's no choice." Tox snarled and they moved to charge when something suddenly grabbed her. Tox turned with a snarl, intending to attack, but froze when she saw Skylor glaring down at her. With a vicious growl, all three werewolves ducked submissively and quickly scurried away from their alpha. Once they were gone, Skylor looked down at the camper van.
She sighed in relief when they showed no signs that they knew what happened.
The last thing the pack needed was two humans finding out about them. Skylor headed back to the pack's hideout to make things very clear to the others. When she arrived she called a meeting of the entire pack.
"They are two humans! Just two!" She exclaimed loudly. "For that are we gonna risk everything we've built here?"
"More will come," Camille warned and the others murmured in agreement.
"Humans aren't our enemy." Skylor reminded them. "We don't have to be ashamed of who we are; we are werewolves and we always will be, but now it's time to grow up, so let them be and they will move on soon enough." She assured them, and with that the meeting ended and the pack dispersed. As everyone left, Skylor saw Garmaddon smiling at her. "Pretty good, right?"
"Getting there." He grinned before he headed off to do his chores...
The man hummed a little song to himself as he looked for a decent spot to fish for their dinner. He wanted to take her with him, but he wanted to make sure that it was safe before he let her go too far from the protection of the van. As far as he knew there were no bears in these woods, but it was better to be safe than sorry, especially with his kid. He had made sure to pack a gun just in case.
He had heard some nature freaks yelling about monsters in this forest.
But those were just some ramblings of weird hippies. He didn't want to scare her, however, and didn't explain this. He hoped a big fish dinner would be a worthy apology. If not he could always use the gun and hunt some deer to get them some venison. As he walked along the river, he thought that maybe he found the perfect. As he set up for an afternoon of fishing, however, he paused when he saw something in the mud.
Several large paw prints were imprinted perfectly in the mud.
At first, he thought that maybe another family was camping around here with a dog. But when he examined the paw prints more closely, he saw that they were far larger than any dog he knew of. Suddenly feeling like he was being watched, the man whipped around frantically but saw nobody there. He was starting to wish he had brought his gun instead of leaving it back at the camper van.
Meanwhile, the girl sighed in boredom as she wandered around, waiting for her dad to come back from his fishing trip.
She had asked to come with him to catch some fish, but he refused. This was not what she was expecting out here. When he offered to take her camping with him she had been expecting hiking, searching for different plants, birds, and animals, spelunking, geocaching, fishing, and s'mores. Not sitting around the van doing nothing. A twig suddenly snapped, shattering the silence around her.
The girl squeaked in surprise and jumped up in a flight-or-fight response.
She was suddenly flashed with images of monsters hiding in the trees, ready to eat her. Curse Grandpa and his scary stories before they left. Her Dad knew was going to have nightmares during this camping trip. She remembered what her Dad had said that if she was in danger to run and lock herself in the van. She turned to run towards the van but screamed when she saw Kataru standing mere inches from her, staring blankly at her.
She hadn't heard him sneaking up behind her.
She quickly examined him carefully. He looked homeless and crazy. He probably lived with a psycho family that lived in the woods and captured summertime campers ate them and wore their clothes for winter. Curse her uncle for letting her watch that movie.
"W-Who are you?" She asked nervously, ready to somehow protect herself if need be. Kataru didn't say anything but he smiled and allowed his eyes to change to bright yellow right in front of this human...
Krux angrily paced around the tents as he let the thoughts of those two humans swirl around inside his head. It was very unnatural for them to allow any humans to live so close to their home and he, along with many others, wanted to go and chase them away. A few, mainly him and his brother, want to wipe them off the face of the Earth, but they can't without the alpha's permission.
Krux snarled at the thought of Skylor.
In his opinion, she had no backbone, just like her father. In Krux's mind, he was a worse alpha than his daughter. He had allowed the human world and those tame wolves had corrupted her morals. But she was the one bringing the wild pack down to their doom. Back in the day, when she was a cub, they would have killed any humans that invaded their territory and moved on without a second thought.
This is what happens when you stay in one place too long.
If they allow those humans to stay they will invite others here. It was only a matter of time until they were discovered. He wasn't the only one who thought that. He had heard Garmaddon and Skylor talking but the food tent a couple of hours ago. When confronted by the pack's worries, Skylor dismissed them. She said that if they were discovered they could just say that they were a community that lived in the woods off the grid.
Krux almost laughed at how pathetic she sounded.
He should have won the brwydr and taken power of the pack. There was no way such a weak, tame werewolf could defeat a true wild wolf like him. She must have cheated, but there was no way he could challenge her again. If he did lose again then he was sure that Skylor would exile him from the pack, and that would most likely be a death wish. No respectable wild pack would take in an exiled werewolf.
The best thing he could do was lay low for a while.
He had to buy his way into Skylor's favor and when her sympathy for humans eventually blew up in her face he would swope in and save the pack from damnation. He just needed to get his foot in the door with the alpha and wait. As Krux paced around, he suddenly saw Kataru approaching him with a large sack over his shoulder.
"It's my offering." Kataru bowed respectfully and he gave him the sack. Krux opened it and smiled when he saw its contents.
"The leader will be pleased." He smirked as he waved the cub away and took the sack to Skylor's tent where she and Garmaddon were sorting through dirty blankets. She allowed him to enter but didn't look pleased to see him. Krux bowed and presented the sack. "To make right my wrongs." He smirked, pleased with himself. Skylor took the sack and her frown turned into a nasty snarl when she saw what was inside.
The large sack contained almost a week's supply of human food.
There were things like tinned fruits, chickpeas, ready-made meals, cereal, tuna, and hot chocolate. pasta sauces, and salad dressings. Deeper in the sack she could smell things like burgers, hot dogs, chicken, kabobs, tins of soups and stews, and chicken skillets.
"Where did you get this?" Skylor snarled and Krux was confused. He thought that she would be happy that he had helped provide food for the pack. Despite his confusion, Krux told her how he got the food and followed her and Garmaddon as they tracked down Kataru. "You stole from the humans? After all, I said?!" She shouted at the cub, not even giving him the chance to greet them.
Kataru was shocked and looked at the Krux for support.
But the older werewolf refused to speak in his defense.
"The girl gave it to us willingly!" Kataru exclaimed, fearful of his alpha's rage. "I did just like you said! I'm not ashamed of who we are!" He blurted out and Skylor's eyes widened in horror. There was no way he did what she thought he did.
"What did you tell her?" She asked and the nervous look he gave them didn't help.
"...Everything." He soon admitted and Skylor swore she could feel her insides freeze over in shock. Garmaddon's eyes were wide in terror and even Krux was shocked and worried about Kataru's confession. Before Skylor could say anything, however, Ash, Griffin, and Paleman came running over to them, followed by most of the pack.
"The man! He's coming! He's got a gun!" Ash screamed, sending everyone into a panicked frenzy.
"You said there was nothing to fear!" Griffin shouted at Skylor, who was frozen on the spot.
"I'll talk to him!" Garmaddon offered.
"He's armed! We must attack!" Acronix roared.
"No! Someone has to lead him away." Skylor finally spoke over everyone.
"Then I'll go," Neuro said and he made to leave, but Skylor stopped him before he could. This was her fault. As leader, the pack was her responsibility and it was her choice to let the humans stay so close by. She would be the one to confront him and face the consequences of her actions. Without saying anything, she took off in the direction they said the man was coming from, transforming along the way.
He brought a gun, so he was expecting a fight.
She would stand a better chance against him in her wolf form. The pack watched as the red wolf ran over the hill and into the forest to confront the danger. A tense silence followed after her departure. No one dared to move. Some probably were too scared to breathe. Kataru was in tears, feeling responsible for this mess. Suddenly, a single loud gunshot rang through the forest, scaring the entire pack.
Silence followed...
