Harry was awoken by the sound of Tonk's voice.
It wasn't the first time that he had woken up; in actuality he'd woken up hours ago only to decide that he really didn't want to deal with the guards that were outside the door… or the fact that rather than being in a cell he was clearly in some kind of break room. A nice one too, with several chairs with padded seats, a TV (currently on some Galar sitcom and set so low that the sound wave just a dull buzz), a couple tables, and several couches. It was honestly rather like the Gryffindor common room if it had a TV in it (McGonagall had always been old fashioned when it came to entertainment and didn't like having the Gryffindors 'rot their brains' with tv; Acreus, did he wish she was around still to complain about that). The main difference, other than the size and colors, was that there usually weren't guards outside the Gryffindor dorms.
He hadn't known if the guards wanted him to know they were out there but thanks to enhanced senses he'd been able to tell at once. And having another round of Gigantimaxing had almost screwed up with his senses even more, making everything all the more sharper and clearer. As such when he'd first awoken he'd taken one look around before rolling back onto the couch he'd found himself on and going right back to sleep. He knew it probably would have gotten him a scolding from so many of his mentors and trainers but honestly he'd in the last two days gone through three different weather extremes, a battle with an Ultra Beast, and a Dynamax Battle that had seen him grow to over 50 feet tall.
He was tired.
So he'd hunkered down and decided to get some shut eye because one had no idea when they might need to go 40 hours straight without rest again. And the break room was just the right temperature; not too cold, not too hot. And quiet too but not so quiet that one felt nervous. There was just enough ambient noise to allow him to drift to sleep.
Thus it was Tonks who woke him up in what felt like minutes and hours at the same time.
"Honestly, how can you sleep like that?" she asked from above him. "I'd suffocate."
"It's actually rather comfortable," Harry stated. He was on his belly, having pulled one of the cushions slightly away from the rest of the couch so that he could rest his face in the crack that it formed. "It's a Weasley trick… darkens everything no matter how bright the room is, the warmth of your own breath helps calm you down, and if you have a sinus headache it makes everything drain to your nose." He finally got up and grimaced. "A bit of a head rush when you get up too quickly but…" He pulled out a handkerchief from his back pocket and let loose a thunderous blast that filled the room like a fog horn. "Like I said, clears you up real good."
"…Remus convinced you to carry around a snot rag, didn't he?"
"It's a handkerchief and its better than blowing your nose in your hands like I've seen you do," Harry teased his cousin.
"I have never done that."
"No, you just press a finger against a nostril and blow as hard as you can. And then you lick whatever comes out." He screwed up his face in disgust at that memory. "Seriously Tonks, how did you end up with Remus?"
"Hahaha," she said, plopping down next to him. "Remus loves me for my charming personality!"
"…well, he is friends with Sirius-"
"Shut up you dork!" Tonks said, rolling her eyes.
"I suppose you have been ladylike when you've been out sneaking drinks during this trip," he joked.
"Huh?" Tonks said, confused.
"We all have noticed how you are in the morning, Tonks… at least you recover quickly."
"I don't follow."
Harry shot her a flat stare. "Come on… you're hung over every morning."
Tonks bit her lip nervously. "No… no I'm really not."
"Oh, so you just like hiding in the bathroom throwing up all the time?"
"I don't like it but I haven't had a drink in a month."
Harry laughed. "Fine, you've had a sip."
"I'm being serious, Harry," Tonks said, not smiling. "Remember… remember how I told you about me and Remus?"
"Mmmhmm."
"Remember how nervous I was?"
"Yup."
"I… might have left something out."
"…and that is?"
Tonks glared at him. "Are you honestly going to make me say it?"
"Say what?"
"What it means when a woman gets sick in the bathroom every morning."
Harry's brow furrowed. "She's… sick?"
"She's pregnant!" one of his guards called out only for the sound of him getting hit to fill the air.
Harry stared at Tonks who shifted in her seat nervously. Suddenly her proclamation that she knew Mewtwo wouldn't harm her made sense: it wasn't because she was a childish… it was because she had the most innocent of life currently growing in her.
"…huh."
"You honestly didn't realize?" Tonks asked. "Hermione figured it out in a day. Neville and Luna have known since before we flew out on this mission."
"I'd remind you that my childhood was spent being little more than a servant. Uncle Vernon's version of the birds and the bees was, "Boy! The birds like to fuck above the house and then shit on it! Get on the ladder and clean their droppings off! And watch out for the bees, I don't want them to sting Dudley!"."
"…is it wrong that I'm glad Voldemort killed them?"
"Yes… if only because I hate giving that man any credit." Harry shook his head. "So… Remus knocked you up."
"We are having a baby, yes," Tonks grunted, narrowing her eyes.
"Oh oh oh!" Harry said with a smirk. "Someone is already getting maternal, aren't they? Don't want me to talk about you and Remus fucking like Lopunnies?"
"Harry…"
He held up his hands. "Kidding, kidding… I don't want to know about you two doing that anyway." He gave a full body shuddered. "Just… ugh."
"Thanks, brat," she said, giving him a slight shove.
"Seriously, congrats Tonks," Harry said with a smile. "Remus must be thrilled."
"Yeah…"
"Though I'm surprised he let you go on this mission."
" Mmmhmmm."
"This is a big deal and you never told him you lied through your teeth didn't you?"
"…pay you to tell him?"
"Not on your fucking life," Harry said firmly, Tonks flopping back on the couch. "So, either things aren't that bad and that's why you're telling me now or I am massively screwed and you are telling me because when I get out of prison your kid is going to be… 40."
"You aren't in trouble," Tonks stated.
"That's why there is a guard outside?"
She grimaced at that. "You… are in a bit of trouble."
"My name is Harry Potter; the day 'm not in trouble I think is when the sun rises in west and sets in the east."
"Poetic," Tonks said. "But there are things you aren't aware of-" She held up her hand, "-and I'm going to tell you all about them."
Harry smiled at that. It was one of the reasons why he utterly loved Tonks: she GOT what it was like for people to constantly try and hide things from you and treat you like a child and not respect you enough to tell you what you needed to know.
"…you're going to be a good mom, Tonks," Harry said softly, causing his cousin to blink before flashing a watery smile.
"Shut up," she hiccupped.
Harry couldn't help but needle her a bit. "Someone's going to be a good mommy…"
"Stop it," she said. "Hormones…" she waved her hand in front of her face.
"Someone is going to be a very good mama to… whatever my relationship is to the little guy or gal."
Tonks licked her lips. "I… I know Remus is basically your dad at this point so you might have been thinking brother or sister but that would make me your step mom-"
"Yeah," Harry said with a shudder, Tonks joining him, "let's not go with that."
"Right… so I was thinking… because I want you to be a part of their lives… godfather?"
Harry's teasing mood instantly disappeared and now he felt like he was going to begin crying. "Tonks… I…"
"Sirius… he screwed up real bad with you. It wasn't his fault because he thought you were dead but you understand what it is like to lose everything and how much better things would have been if you'd just had him around. That's… that's what makes me know… if something happens to Remus and I… you won't make the same mistakes he did. You won't ever stop till you find my child… and make sure they are loved-"
"Yes," Harry said and he wasn't just agreeing with her sentiment.
Tonks managed a smile at that before quickly leaning in and giving Harry a hug. "Thanks cous."
"Any time," he assured her.
"Oompf!" Tonks gasped. "You are stronger."
"Gigantimaxed," he answered. He pulled away and looked over his clothing, sighing as he pulled on the dress shirt he was wearing which was cutting into his skin now. "I just got this…"
"I knew you got in shape after the Ministry but…"
"Yeah, Speaking means I have Pokemon DNA and when I get near Dynamax clouds I… well…"
Faintly Harry SWORE he heard Luna call out, "Magic Staff, make my Harry GROW!"
"Arceus," Tonks hissed in shock, reaching out and giving his forearm a squeeze. "You look like a fucking bodybuilder!"
Harry looked down at his arms. He wasn't that bad… Tonks made it sound like he was a Machamp. He was solidly built, yes, but…
He looked down at his sock-clad feet and grimaced; he vaguely remembered kicking off his shoes and he could tell from how worn they were that they had taken a beating thanks to his very sudden growth spurt.
"I'm going to need new clothes," he muttered, tugging on the dress shirt's cuffs. He'd gotten it for the interview with Lillie, to make a good impression, and now it was already too smaller. Harry wagered that he was now Jack's height, well over 6 feet tall.
"I thought you looked taller," Tonks admitted before looking at his right hand, Harry grimacing as he saw that it was now slightly smaller than his flesh and blood right. "Hand bigger too… and your feet." She raised an eyebrow and slowly let her eyes drift to his crotch. "Did-"
"That's disgusting, Tonks!"
"It's a legit question!"
"You're my cousin!"
"I'm not asking you to whip it out so I can polish your knob!" she retorted back. "Just curious if-"
"If I answer will you NOT bring it up again?" She nodded. "Yes. Jasmine went up a cup size after the last time we did this and I… yeah, okay."
Tonks smirked. "So that's why she was walking funny after you two…" she butted the heels of her hands together several times.
Harry didn't feel like mentioning that was actually because they'd been so rough both of them had pulled muscles. "I thought we were going to talk about what was going on… and what exactly happened AFTER I had that Dynamax Battle."
"Right, right, sorry about that," Tonks said… though she still ended up reaching out and poking one of his pecs with her index finger. "Remus is a Pokemagnus… I wonder-"
"Tonks!"
"Okay, okay!" his cousin exclaimed though her smile made it clear she wasn't as sorry as she was trying to make herself sound. "So you fell into a Dynamax Den."
"I actually went into it but I didn't know what it was."
"Yeah, Hermione has been arguing that with the officials."
"Arguing?"
Tonks sighed. "So that's the thing… a few years back there were issues in Galar with the Dynamax Dens. Pokemon were stumbling into them and growing giant size. At first it was seen as a new way to battle, made things really interesting. A lot of Gyms modified their set up so that they could vent Dynamax energy into the arenas so that trainers could have massive Pokemon battles."
"Huh… I think I read about that. But they don't do that anymore. Some accident?"
"Yeah. Basically Dnyamax Energy is a natural energy source… but how it was being used wasn't natural."
"You were a friend of Jack Kenway, were you not?" an older woman said and Harry looked over his shoulder to the door where a woman probably in her early 60s was standing. She had muted brown hair, mixed with hints of red so it was hard to tell just what color it had been in her youth. Her face was lined with what Sirius would have called 'well earned wrinkles' that reminded him of McGonagall, making his chest ache at his fallen head of house. She wore a long yellow dress with a white lab coat over the top and clutched a cane in her hand. A pair of half glasses were perched on her nose, completely the look.
"I… yes," Harry admitted.
"I'm sorry you lost him," the old woman said, moving into the room. "He was a good man. I love The Lord of the Rings myself… he would have said that Chairman Rose dug too deeply with his greed. That is why we raced to get you… the scars of that have hurt Galar." She paused. "But that is not why we kept you here."
That made Tonks frown. "I was told you needed to keep Harry for observation."
"I lied," the old woman admitted. "I… needed to wait for the tests to be sure."
"What do you mean-" Harry began only for the door to open…
…and his stomach to plummet to his feet.
The woman that entered was in her twenties, with brilliant red hair the color of fire. She was wearing a labcoat as well and was followed by a small stubby yellow dog-like Pokemon that happily trotted after her, tongue out. But Harry could hardly focus on the new Pokemon as he stared at the woman… and her brilliant green eyes.
"Mom?" he whispered though at once he knew his mistake and cursed himself for his stupidity. All the photos he'd seen of his mother had caused him to see her as being young but there was no way Lily Potter would have remained 20 forever. This woman… it was just her hair and her eyes that caused him to make the mistake and he grimaced, shutting his eyes and shaking his head. "Sorry. I shouldn't-"
"Wotcher," Tonks gasped. "You look just like her."
The young woman blinked while the old woman smiled. "Yes, I imagine Sonia does look like Lily." She moved to settle down next to Harry. "May I tell you a story, Harry?" He found himself nodding, his embarrassment over thinking the woman, Sonia, was his dead mother causing him to feel all out of sorts. "Years and years ago I feel in love with the wrong sort of man. It happens…" She smirked, her faded green eyes twinkling with a sudden light. "All boys want a slut and all girls want a felon at some point."
"Grandma!" Sonia exclaimed.
"Hush, its true!" the professor exclaimed, smacking her granddaughter's hand before looking back at Harry. "Everyone has a point when their heart wants what is worst for it. Where they don't listen to common sense or reason and lust for the forbidden. For me…" she smiled fondly, "oh, that man… oh, he was a horror."
She paused.
"But an utter delight."
"Grandma!" Sonia wailed again.
But the old woman just continued on. "We met because we disagreed. That's how it seems to go so many times. Love and hate… they are twisted up in each other and sometimes you can start with one and move to the other. We battled and screamed and raged at each other, debating a thousand different things. And at some point… well, we ended up doing it with far less clothes."
"Oh god!" Sonia moaned. "Please stop telling the strangers about you and grandpa!"
"It wasn't your grandpa so you can hush, Sonia!" the old woman scolded. That caused the younger woman to blink in confusion but she did stop interrupting. Turning back to Harry the old woman said, "I see now what happened… Aster was a man that believed things should be done a certain way. Stuck in the past… the very far past sometimes. We were never going to be together. Never going to last. I said we could make it work some how but that wasn't going to do for him. I wanted a career… he wanted me to remain in the kitchen, barefoot and making him pies. I wanted to spend my life with Pokemon… I think a Meowth bit him when he was five and after that he hated each and every one of them. I was willing for our family to be different and unique… he needed marriage and us in the same home and him as the king of the castle and I the dutiful queen."
She laughed.
"That was never going to happen." She sighed, her good mood failing away. "I believed them to have died, Harry. A boating accident. One tragedy of many. A lot of people died when the ferry sunk and I… I assumed he and our child died together."
Harry was on the edge of a great cliff. The wind was blasting him from all sides and all it would take was for it to shift slightly and send him tumbling over.
"I didn't put the pieces together until you sent that message out to the world. That the day was coming when you'd stop running. I saw you… and then I saw your mother." The old woman looked down at hands before slowly reaching out and taking Harry's into hers. "Our family… it has a habit of running, I see that now. You ran from Little Surrey. Lily ran as well… from her father and her step mother and her step sister. Petunia. And I… ran from Avalon. Ran to here."
The wind shifted.
"Harry…" tears gathered in her eyes. "my name is Profession Maureen Gaunt-Magnolia… and I'm your grandmother."
