Giles is back at Oxford to finish his degree after Randall's death when someone comes asking for help with a problem he's well aquainted with. Guilt, shame and a million other awful wounds are torn back open for a night and Giles finds he can't help anyone. . . least of all himself.

Once she locates him, they find themselves assisting Faith and an old vampire for whom Spike has been working to prevent a takeover of the hellmouth by another old vampire who is not as slayer-friendly as Spike's friend.

When Spike and Drusilla break up over the disagreement of how best to treat a young child, Spike takes the child and leaves. Years later after a soulful Spike is badly injured in Prague, the girl takes him to Sunnydalein the hopes that the energy from the Hellmouth will restore him to health. (Ch. 3 Reuploaded!) Some cultures say souls go on an after-death journey of discovery, resolution, and possible return to the living. This is Spike's journey after Chosen. It's a bit random, but leads him to believe Buffy did mean "I love you" in the cavern. Even better, after resurrection, he tells her and hears her say it again.
