In the residents of Los Angeles, the times have changed so much since the frog invasion ten years ago. All the teens from Saint James Middle School are now officially grown ups. Especially the four familiar teens from long ago who stopped the invasion: Anne Boonchuy, Sasha Waybright, Marcy Wu, and Darrel Loyalitat.
Upon returning home from Amphibia, the four spent most of their summer together. But because of Marcy's father's new job out of state, it was to be Marcy's final summer with her three best friends. So the four friends spent most of their free time together. From playing creatures and caverns, to going to the beach, to playing arcade games, to watching their favorite movies, the four friends didn't waste a second apart from each other. They knew that their friendship was stronger than ever before, and nothing could ever break the team up.
After Marcy moved across the country, she grew up to be a freelance webcomic creator. Her best comic yet is called, 'Amphibi-Anne.' Based on the events that inspired her, and her friends in Amphibia. But everyone believed it to be otherwise. Just a fictional tale from an inspiring writer.
Sasha grew up to become a child psychologist, helping troubled teens get through the angst of their life's problems. She still looks back to her problems, especially the ones from her time in Amphibia, and that helped her to become a better person.
Thanks to her experiences in Amphibia, Anne took time to learn herpetology, the study of amphibians. The memories of her frog friend Sprig Plantar lingered in her mind, and they never stopped. Her memories of her best friend inspire her to be the best herpetologist in the Los Angeles Aquarium
Darrel Loyalitat, after learning the wonders of magic in Amphibia, turned to a new kind of wonder in the world: Outer Space. Ever since he left Amphibia with Anne, Sasha, and Marcy, he keeps looking to the stars and hopes that his salamander friend, Tint Tormak, is doing the same. His stargazing gave him a new kind of interest in life, and that got him a job at the Griffith Observatory as an astronomer.
Darrel and Anne took a break in their relationship before graduating high school. But after Darrel graduated college and got his current job, he and Anne got back together and decided to take the next step; In holy matrimony. Over the next few months after Anne's twenty third birthday, they thought life couldn't get any better for them.
Then one day, Bee and Oum Boonchuy invited Matthew and Sarah Loyalitat over for tea. Oum used Thailand's traditional tea party setups to make the living room more welcoming to Thai culture. Bea and Matthew enjoyed her traditional recipe of Thailand scones and salmon bread. Sarah just enjoyed savoring the flavorings of Cha Yen tea.
The two families were enjoying each other's company ever since their children got married. The Boonchuy's daughter, Anne, and the Loyalitat's son, Darrel. The four became the very best of friends, the best of in-laws, the best of parents.
"So Oum, how are things going at the restaurant?" Sarah asked.
"Things are going so well," replied Oum as she sipped her tea. "Business is neither slowing down or speeding up, and that's okay."
"And besides," said Bee. "Anne and Darrel are more than welcome to take over if things aren't going so well with their jobs."
"Well," said Matthew. "That is an interesting backup plan. But I've never seen Darrel so happy in his life working in the observatory."
"It's like ever since he left Amphibia, he's been trying to find something new out there," said Sarah.
"Or," said Oum. "Maybe he's trying to find something familiar."
Then, a knock on the door was heard. "I'll get it," said Bee. He gets up from his seat and opens the door, revealing Darrel and Anne smiling gleefully. "Darrel! Anne! What a surprise," he said. "Come in, come in."
"Hi Dad," said Anne. The two enter the house, removing their shoes, and see their parents having tea. The six family members greeted each other over and over. "Okay, okay," said Anne. "We get it. You miss us, but you know we visit once in a while."
"I know Anne," said Oum. "But this time, you haven't visited us for almost a month. It's not like you two to not visit us that very long."
Darrel smiled, "That's exactly why we came here. To tell you what's going on." The four parents return to the living room and sit down. Darrel cleared his throat, "Ahem, so as you were wondering. Anne and I had to go to the doctor's because Anne's been feeling under the weather."
The parents grew slightly worried, but Darrel assured them she's okay. "She's okay, but the signs I explained to them means that something big is happening. And it affects all of us. It's a life changing experience, One that the doctor was aware would happen."
The parents knew he was dragging them along, so they said, "Get to the point!" Darrel laughed at their impatience. "Okay, okay, but I think I should let Anne tell you." He turns to Anne and she looks to her parents and in-laws with a bright smile.
"Mom, Dad, Matthew, Sarah," She takes a deep breath. Then puts her hands on her bulging stomach. Realizing what she was going to say next, the parents remained silent. "I'm pregnant," said Anne.
Bee's jaw dropped, "Y-you mean..?!"
Darrel nodded, and the two announced. "We're having a baby!"
The parents started leaping and crying in joy."My baby's having a baby!" said Oum. "My baby's having a baby!" said Sarah. The group hugged the kids, but not too tight considering Anne's condition.
"You must feel really proud of yourselves," said Bee in tears.
"This is the best news I've heard since you both said, 'I do,'" said Matthew, giving them a thumbs up. "You guys are going to be great parents."
"Thanks dad," said Darrel. "And it would be a blessing for the little one to meet his grandparents." Then, tears started flowing down his face. He looked at his mom and hugged her tightly. He thinks back to the days when she was sick, and if Amphibia never happened, she wouldn't be here. "Oh mom. I'm just so happy you'll get the chance to see your first grandchild!"
Sarah hugged her son back, "Me too, Darrel. And it was all thanks to your salamandrian friend."
"You know, I hope Tint's doing okay," said Anne. "Along with Sprig, Polly, Hop pop, and everyone else we met in Amphibia. But, as long as those four are together, I believe they're going to be okay."
"But for now," said Oum. "You two need to start thinking about your little one. That should be your top priority."
"Oum's right," said Sarah. "Even with Dr Terri and Mr X doing everything they can with their portal project. You have to put your kid's needs first. But we'll all be there to help you through these precious moments in your lives."
"Just like we did with you Anne," said Oum. "Moving to America was a big step in our lives. But it was worth it seeing you grow up to be the woman you've become."
"Oh, mom," said Anne, hugging her parents. "I love you all so much."
"So how long will it be when the little one arrives?" Matthew asked. "In another seven months," replied Darrel. "Our newborn is going to be here before we know it!"
Seven Months Later…
Darrel paced back and forth in the hallway of the hospital. His neck scarf and crystal bounced up and down to the rhythm of his pacing. "Oh my goodness," he said. "The baby's coming." What was once excitement in his heart, was swiftly replaced with fear and despair. "What will I do? What will I do? What will I DO?!"
"Will you calm down?" asked a familiar voice. That voice was his childhood friend Sasha, who helped them get to the hospital with her car. She wore her casual outfit which consisted of her leather jacket, her light purple shirt, dark pink skirt, and her sunglasses resting on her head. "Darrel, everything's going to be fine."
"How can you be so sure Sasha?" he asked. "This isn't a scenario where one mistake is not a big deal. Every mistake affects the kid's life!" He hyperventilates his stress, until Sasha gives him a paper bag. He slows down his breathing every time he takes a breath in the bag. "Thanks, Sash."
"Listen Darrel," said Sasha. "It's not the end of the world. The one thing you don't do is give up. Look at what you've done. You found your voice in Amphibia, becoming a living wizard in a world of frogs. You fought against Andrias and the Core by our side. You helped save two worlds, all because you believed it was the right thing to do. If you can do all that, then you can be a father to your newborn child!"
Darrel looked to Sasha with hope in his heart. He took a long deep breath, and exhaled with ease. "What would I do without you, Sasha," said Darrel.
"Probably keep your face hidden in your fantasy books," chuckled Sasha. Then, they hear a scream coming from the maternity ward. It was Anne's.
"Think you have the courage to go in there now?" Sasha asked. But before he could answer, the doctor came out the door. "They're waiting for you," they said. Darrel rushed to the door and swung it open. What stands before him is his tired wife looking up at him. Then turns her attention to her baby, wrapped in a green blanket with a green cap on top, their skin color the same as Anne.
Darrel could not believe his eyes, he and his wife brought a child into the world together. "Oh Anne," his eyes started to swell up.
"Say hello to our new son," said Anne. Darrel took a knee and Anne brought him closer.
Darrel takes his finger and brushes his cheek. "Hey there lil' guy." Then, the baby starts opening his eyes and sees his mother and father for the first time. "Hey there little buddy," he whispered as tears ran down his face. Anne chuckled at the sight of his happiness.
Sasha came in shortly after Darrel bolted in and saw the three Loyalitats. She smiled with a few tears in her eyes. She wiped them off before she could get any closer. "Well done, Loyalitats," she said. "What are you going to name him?" Darrel took a moment to himself and a name suddenly popped in his head.
"I know what I want to name him," he said, "And I think you know what I want, sweetie."
Anne smiled, "I think I know too. You did mention it a few times. It's okay."
Darrel smiled with pride and said, "Sasha, allow me to properly introduce to you our first born son: Cyrus Phlang Loyalitat. In honor of my best friend. Who I miss every day." He touches his neckerchief and crystal and looks down at his son. "I love you Tint, and I always will."
"Cyrus?" Sasha asked. Her eyes looked confused at the boy, but she kept a smile on her face. "What does that have to do with Tint?"
"It was the name of Tint's great grandfather," replied Darrel. "A brilliant engineer who wanted to explore the worlds beyond Amphibia, just like Cronaxx. And Phlang is Thai for 'Power' , the strength of keeping our family together."
Anne chuckled, "Someone's been learning their Thai." The three had a good chuckle and stayed by Cyrus until they could check out of the hospital.
One Month Later…
Before they checked out, The Loyalitats and the Boonchuys check in the hospital to visit their grandson/nephew. Darrel found an offer for a house in Signal Hill. His offer was accepted and the three moved in. During the first few days at the house, the Loyalitats, the Boonchuys, and all their friends growing up, came to visit the newly born Cyrus.
Then one day, Darrel gets a call from his oldest friend, and dungeon buddy, Marcy. He tells Sasha and Anne that due to her success with her webcomic, a publisher in Los Angeles made her an offer to come up with a new one. Which gave her the opportunity to work in Los Angeles, and return to her old friends.
The two newly parents occasionally visit their families, and bring their grandson with them. The mothers and fathers would pass down their knowledge and experiences of parenthood to them, and Anne and Darrel take their words to heart. By learning what they did raising the two of them, they can take that advice and raise their son the way their parents did.
One day, while visiting Sasha's apartment, the three hear a knock on the door. Sasha opens it to reveal Marcy Wu and the moving truck carrying her stuff. "Hey Guys!" Marcy cheered. Sasha, Anne, and Darrel smiled at the sight of their old friend.
"Oh, Mar Mar," said Anne. "I'm so happy you came back."
"And this time, I'm not leaving Los Angeles," said Marcy. "Not the city, and not my friends ever again."
"If that's the case," said Darrel, carrying Cyrus. "Marcy, I'd like you to finally meet someone special." He took Cyrus in Anne's arms, and Marcy gasped as quietly as she could. She was so awestruck at the child, stars appeared in her pupils.
"OMG," she whispered. "Is that your child?"
Darrel nodded, "He is. Marcy Wu, I'd like you to meet the newest addition to the Loyalitat Family: Cyrus. In honor of-"
"In honor of Tint's great grandfather," finished Marcy. "You still know me very well," smiled Darrel. "Even after ten years of being across the country, dungeon buddy." The three laughed and laughed, along with little Cyrus.
The four friends help Marcy carry her stuff into Sasha's apartment and unpack her things. As they unpack, Darrel comes across her old Amphibia stuff. The sight of her old ranger outfit made him feel melancholic.
Sasha spots him holding up Marcy's ranger outfit. "Oh, you found it," said Sasha in a sad tone. "I still keep my old armor in my closet."
Marcy and Anne come in seeing Sasha and Darrel unpack Marcy's Amphibia stuff "Do you guys think Terri will ever get the portal open again?" asked Marcy.
"It's not that simple," said Darrel. "When Cronaxx created the Calamity Box, he created it with a combination of both engineering, and magical enchantment. One can not exist without the other. Terri can create the portal generator, she can lock in the coordinates. But without the magic of the stones, even with all the power in the country, it still wouldn't be enough to cross over."
"And besides," said Anne. "Right now, we've got to put Cyrus first before anything else." The four friends look down at Cyrus who is still sleeping in his playpen/portable crib.
"You're right Anne," said Sasha. "Parenthood always comes first."
"As much as I would like to go back and see all our old friends again," said Marcy. "I understand completely. And besides, I just came back here. That should be enough for all of us."
"Yeah," said Darrel. "But sometimes I wonder. What are all our old Amphibia friends doing right now?"
Marcy hangs up her old ranger outfit and puts her old Amphibia journal on her bookshelf. "I'm sure life has a way of making their adventure as exciting as this one," she said.
Meanwhile in Amphibia…
And Marcy couldn't be more right about what she thought. For a small group of explorers were venturing in the wilds of uncharted territory. That group of explorers consisted of five newly adult amphibians.
Sprig Plantar, a pink tree frog, now twenty one years old, still wearing his hat his late mother gave him, and wearing his bandana, hopped over mud puddles and thickets. He serves as the team's leader in exploring new lands.
Polly Plantar, a purple frog at age sixteen, wearing her mechanic overalls and signature bow, slashed and cut bushes using a sword. She serves as the mechanic/ demolition frog of the group.
Ivy Sundew, a yellow frog, Sprig Plantar's girlfriend, twenty one years old, jumped over Sprig while wearing her cloak, shirt, and baggy pants. She serves as the high climbing martial artist of the group.
Maddie Flour, a blue frog at aged twenty, carried her charms and potions in her backpack. She wore her traditional black lab coat with light pale flowers. Her light brown gloves carried a couple of vials of her freshly brewed elixirs. She serves as the alchemist/ charm caster of the group.
And finally, Sprig's best friend, he and Polly's adopted brother, and Maddie's boyfriend, Tint Tormak. The fire salamander at age twenty two, he wears his great great uncle, Cronaxx's old hat. Crafts a blue cape he made out of spider silk and a large leaf, just like Darrel did. And keeps an old compass around his neck, the same one Darrel gave to him before he left. He serves as the team's navigator and top wizard of the group.
"So, where do we go now?" Polly asked.
Tint holds up his compass and points in the direction they're going. "We keep heading east," he replied. "We'll make it back to Grime's camp in no time."
"I sure hope he's not upset we missed the roll call," said Maddie.
"It's fine," said Ivy, hopping along with the group. "As long as we return before sundown, he won't be too upset."
After the events of Amphibia, Sprig, Ivy, Tint, Maddie, and Polly left Wartwood to become a part of Grime's crew to explore new continents of Amphibia. Sprig and Polly's grandfather Hop pop was a tad upset about his grandchildren leaving the farm. But, he trusted that they were old enough to go as long as they write back once in a while.
As the group returns to the camp, Ivy spots a cave straying off the path, covered in mushrooms and crystals. "Hey guys! Check out that cave!" said Ivy, hopping over.
Tint looks at Ivy drifting away from the group. "Ivy, wait for us," said Tint. "We have to stay together in uncharted territory. It's one of Grime's important rules."
"Yeah Ivy," said Sprig. "I don't want you finding all the good stuff."
They enter the cave, with Tint casting a light spell. "Lux Pila." A ball of light appears and shines on the cave entrance. The crystals shine as bright as the sun outside, giving off an array of colors.
"Wow," said Polly. "Look at all these crystals!" She goes over to make a funny face in a crystal's reflection.
"This is incredible," said Maddie. She takes a couple of crystals and puts them in her satchel. "You could never know if they could be useful."
Sprig was so entranced at the sight of the crystals, he suddenly slipped and slid down a dark path. The others turned to see him fall and they followed after him. At the bottom of the slide, the five amphibians landed safely. With nothing but a bunch of scrapes and a bruise here and there. "Everyone okay?" Ivy asked.
"I'm okay," groaned Polly. Placing her hand on her head, feeling a scratch. "What happened Sprig?"
"I guess I wasn't watching my step," he said.
"So you pulled a Marcy?" Maddie asked. Tint gave off a confused look and Maddie explained. "Basically a Marcy is where you fail to notice your surroundings, that you fall down and hurt yourself. Kind of like…Marcy." Maddie looks down with gloom
The group sulked at the name of their old human friend, and it got them to remember their human friends as well. Sprig pulls out a phone that once belonged to his best friend Anne. Tint holds up Darrel's family compass and carefully looks at the Loyalitat engraved symbol on the side. Ivy looks over her shoulder to see pink mushrooms, just like Sasha's sword that is planted in the ground where she said goodbye. The same goes for Anne's tennis racket, Marcy's crossbow, and Darrel's staff, that are also laying on the hilltop as a shrine to their departure.
Suddenly, the ground started to shake and the group were shocked to see another conjoint pair of olms pop out of the ground. Those olms looked much younger than the other olms they met in Amphibia, Lysil and Angwin."Who dares disturb our cavern home?" roared the first olm.
"Tint and company," said Tint bowing. "At your service. We did not mean to trespass, we were just finding a path to our campsite above ground."
"Well then," said the second Olm. "If it's a way out you want, we'll gladly offer you a way. Follow us, and don't lag behind."
As the group take their first steps, Polly takes notice of ancient writing above them. "Hey wait, is that Amphibian writing?" she asked.
The olms take notice with their milky eyes. Even though they couldn't see, they could feel the surrounding area. A place that is familiar to them, "Yes, it is," said the olms. "We were tasked by the wisest olm of all to guard this prophecy, in case she forgets what it is."
"Wait, a prophecy?" Tint looked up and saw the ancient writing and illustrations on the ceiling. "They're right!" he said. "It is a prophecy."
"But I thought the prophecy had been fulfilled," said Ivy.
"That was the old prophecy," said Tint. "Prophecies are usually made up, but they're also true."
He looks to see the two murals, one with a human hand, and one with Amphibia's sigil. One side with humans, the other with frogs. In between the murals, show the Calamity stones surrounding the crystal of what was once the Eternal Staff. And inside the crystal, showed three keyholes.
The group gasped in amazement, and Sprig took out his phone to take a picture. "What does it say, Tint?" Maddie asked. Tint looked at the inscriptions carefully, remembering his lesson in studying the ancient Amphibian language, and he softly smiled with hope in his heart.
"It says…
Three Keys from afar. Will glow brighter than any Star. With the Sun and Moon, in the Realm of Eternity. They'll come to us, the World of Calamity."
The group stood in silence and amazement, until the olms spoke up. "Okay, let's get you guys out of here," The group follow the olms back to the surface and they wave goodbye. "Be careful where you walk next time. You may not be so lucky."
Shortly after, the group reached the outskirts of Grime's camp. Tint and Sprig lagged behind to see the sunset over Amphibia.
Tint looked at the sun with an excited smile on his face. "Do you know what this prophecy means, Sprig?" Tint asked.
"No," replied Sprig. Still confused with the inscriptions, he looks to his salamander brother. He asks him a simple question, "What does it mean?"
Tint just uttered one word to him. "Hope," Still a bit confused, Sprig looks at Anne's phone, then perks up with a hopeful smile on his face. Then, the two race back to their friends and return to Grime's camp.
Back on Earth…
The birth of Cyrus was only the beginning for the Boonchuy-Loyalitats. As time went on, Darrel and Anne's family got a whole lot bigger. Cyrus began to take his first steps at age one. At that time, Anne was pregnant with their second child. "I can't wait to see what our second child is going to look like," said Darrel.
Anne holds her stomach. "Me too," said Anne. Darrel picks up Cyrus to see his upcoming sibling. Cyrus just blows a raspberry on Anne's stomach. Anne giggled with delight. "Hahahaha, Cyrus! I guess he's excited too." Darrel chuckled and smiled at his family.
Then, on Halloween night, Darrel brought his son in his frog costume. To finally see his first sibling. "How is she?" Darrel asked.
"She's as healthy as the doctors say," replied Anne, carrying her second born, and first daughter of the family. The little girl was wrapped in light blue blankets, and wearing a small blue hat.. "Cyrus, say hello to your new sister: Alexis Fidaw Loyalitat,"
"She sure is our special little star fire," said Darrel. Cyrus takes Alexis' hand and the two lock eyes on each other. Then, in an instant, a flash of pink and blue appeared in their pupils. Darrel and Anne were too overwhelmed to notice that. They were just focused on the fact that they have two children to care for now.
Almost two years later, Sasha and Marcy were watching Cyrus and Alexis in Sasha's apartment. Ever since Marcy came back, she'd been living with Sasha and the two shared rent with the jobs they're currently occupied with.
To make extra money, Marcy agreed to watch Cyrus and Alexis. She told them stories, played with figurines from her Creatures and Caverns games, and sung them to sleep with lullabies her mom and dad sung to her.
Then, a knock on the door was made. As the door opens, the women and children are happy to see Darrel and Anne arrive. And with another baby in their hands. "OMG!" squealed Marcy. "He's so cute! What's the little tyke's name?"
"His name..," said Darrel. "Is Timothy Tormak Loyalitat." Timothy opens his eyes and meets his family for the first time. "Welcome to Earth, little Timmy,"
Alexis and Cyrus looked down to see their brother. Timothy opened his eyes at his siblings and smiled. And unknown to the four adults, Cyrus' eyes glowed pink. Alexis' eyes glowed blue, and Timothy's eyes glowed green.
Several years later, Darrel got the camera set up. "Anne, kids! It's time for the family portrait!" Cyrus comes in wearing a dark gray collared shirt, wearing glasses on his face. He stands proudly in front of his mother. Alexis comes in wearing a light purple shirt with a blue vest over it, and a long dark pink skirt. She stands in front of both her parents in the center of the portrait. Timothy comes in wearing a dark teal shirt, light yellow pants and jumps on his father's shoulders.
"Come on Dad! Come on Mom! Come on Alexi! Come on Cy! Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on!" Timothy cheered. His hyperactive behavior gave his parents and siblings a few laughs.
Darrel laughed, "We probably should've given you a lot of candy, Timothy."
"That little tyke's gonna be really tired tomorrow," chuckled Alexis with a small monotone voice.
"I'm sure it'll be enough to learn his lesson," said Cyrus. "Hmm, that, or he'll get a very bad toothache, or he'll get very sick."
"Okay everyone," said Anne. "Smile!"
She turns on the timer, she gets in her spot, the camera goes off. The flash goes away and the whole family is shown to be smiling. As the kids look at the family photo, they see something strange. They saw on their pupils, there were shades of pink, blue, and green in each of them. When Anne and Darrel looked at the photo, the colors were not visible to them. The kids look at each other with curiosity and concern, for they have no idea what exists inside them.
I'm glad this came out today, because today marks a special occasion. Four years ago on June 17, 2019, Disney introduced us to the show Amphibia. And it will still continue to be one of the best shows I have watched in my life. I'll keep the story, the characters, the themes, and cultures, to heart and will continue to do so with other great animated shows. This story serves as a sequel to Loyalty Among Worlds and I can't wait to share more of this story in the future. Until then, Keep on Truckin'!
