The Voice Inside My Head

By Morgan Jenson

Morgan POV

"Oh, um I don't…" I start to respond, but stop mid sentence when I actually look up.

I was going to say, 'I don't think that's a good idea', but after seeing the man in front of me with a charming yet unsure smile, I completely changed my mind.

"I don't see why not, I think I may have taken the last table. Please", I point to the chair across from me, have a seat."

He pulls the chair out and once he's situated I can't help the small smirk I give him.

You see, when I met my husband Dean, he was a couple of years younger than me. We were both young, me 22 and him 19. We were still kids, with a lot of growing up to do. Being with him from such a young age, he was the last man I dated, kissed, made love to, fucked, and so on. I'm divorced and I still haven't dated, kissed, made love to, or fucked anyone else since.

My marriage was so rocky the last several years, and just overall not good for me, that my libido had taken a hit.

Looking at the man in front of me. I can honestly say with that one smile, he has ignited a fire inside of me, I haven't felt in years. This stranger, with his charming smile, a bit of gray throughout his dark brown hair, blueish gray eyes, and 5 o'clock shadow, is all man!

I haven't ever been one to blush, but I've always been told I'm an open book, that my face tends to give me away, and I wear my heart on my sleeve. I feel a bit of embarrassment, hoping he can't read my thoughts by the look on my face.

"Thank you for letting me sit, I hope I'm not keeping you from anything important?" He asks, pointing at my laptop.

"Oh, no. I was just working on something. I'm actually having trouble with it, so I could use a break."

"I assume it's work related?"

"No."

I pause, what can I say. I don't think I should tell him I'm writing a story about what I wished my life could have been. That I've been a Twilight fan for the past 25 years and still read FanFiction. I'm 56 and I feel so out of place and unsure. I feel like I should own it though. Writing this story has felt freeing and exhilarating. Maybe I can tell him part of it?

"Definitely not work related. I actually work at an accounting firm. I decided to start writing though, a hobby, I guess you could say."

"Writing, that's definitely different from accounting. You said you're having trouble with it though?"

"Kind of. I consider myself creative, but the ideas aren't coming as easily as I'd hoped."

I pause again. I think my face is giving me away as he gives me a small smile, looking into my eyes, I see what looks to be encouragement?

"The main character, she's 18, and in college in Atlanta Georgia to become a graphic designer. She's also an Atlanta Braves fan."

"Are you a Braves fan?" He interrupts to ask.

"I am actually. Since I've never written before, I thought it would be best to write what I know, what I'm familiar with, at least for parts of it."

I can't believe I'm telling him all of this!

"That's something we have in common then, being a Braves fan, I mean ." He says, smiling again. "If you're writing what you know, why are you stuck, what's giving you trouble?

I smile back, happy to hear he likes baseball, the Braves. He's already different from Dean, it's hard not to compare as Dean was in my life for so long.

We've only been sitting here together for such a short time, but I can't help but be honest, and continue.

"Well, the girl, Bella, like I said, is young. I want her to grow up a bit, let her get to where she wants in life, in her career, before falling in love and getting married."

He nods his head as he's listening, I decide to keep going.

"She ends up falling in love with a baseball player. A Braves baseball player more specifically."

He smiles wider, chuckling a bit, his shoulders moving slightly from his laughing. He looks so cute as he laughs, laugh lines showing around his eyes and mouth. He looks younger when he laughs and smiles like that!

"You said you wanted to write what you know and are familiar with. Does that mean you've fallen for a professional baseball player?"

I laugh too, at the absurdity of his question. "No, definitely not. I've never met a professional baseball player. I did want to be a graphic designer though."

"Then what exactly is giving you trouble? It sounds as if you're writing about a subject matter with some familiarity."

"Well, since I want her to have time to grow up and begin her career before falling in love…"

I pause, to drink some of my smoothie and think on how to word what's giving me trouble.

"Can I ask you something first?" I ask instead.

"Sure"

"Are you married?"

He chuckles again. "What does that have to do with your story?"

"The story won't exactly be PG rated."

I end up biting my lip, like Bella, but release it when I make that connection. I noticed when I did, he was looking at my lips. I hope he's not married, he still hasn't answered me. He's not wearing a ring, but my husband and I didn't either for the majority of our marriage, so that doesn't prove anything.

"Not PG, huh? No, I'm not married. I'm actually single. I am 58, divorced, I have 2 kids, and my name is Ethan Marshall."

He pauses briefly, giving me a wink.

"I think we should at least know each other's names if we're leaving the PG rating behind."

A small gasp leaves my mouth with that statement. I decide to be a bit more bold, look directly into his clear blue-gray eyes, and continue.

"Well, the girl, Bella; like I said, is young. Do I just jump ahead several years in the story to get to good stuff? Have her meet the baseball player, start their relationship, sex scenes and all?"

I pause, for just a moment as I noticed his eyes grew darker at my last question.

"Or, do I write about all the boring character building stuff, leaving the readers wanting? Oh… and my name is Morgan Thomas." I finish with a smile.

Queue the Instant attraction! My brain screams!
