Melanie was a model employee, she didn't steal, she was always on time, she was friendly, and she worked hard. She also turned her phone off while at work. Unfortunately, this also meant she generally only checked her phone after she got off work. So she was shocked when Brad rushed into the smoothie shop and up to the counter.
"Melanie, I need you to come with me." Brad was ghost-white, alarming Melanie.
"I'm working Brad you're being silly," Melanie replied attempting to convey positivity.
"Melanie, Freddie called me, your mom took a turn, I need to get you there," Brad responded, eyes sympathetically locked on Melanie's expression.
"Oh my God," Melanie felt her heart sink through the floor.
"I'll drive you, but we should hurry," Brad explained.
Melanie could feel tears streaming down her face, "But someone has to close down the shop, I can't leave."
Brad didn't even hesitate, "I'll do it. You can take my car, I'll close down for you."
Melanie paused, "That's so sweet, but you don't work here, and I can't let you do that for me."
"You're hiring still, right? I'm applying. Do I get the job?" Brad said, dead serious.
"Really?" Melanie said, wiping her eyes with a napkin.
Brad nodded, grabbing Melanie's hand, and placing his keys in her palm.
"Drive safe," Brad smiled reassuringly.
Melanie felt the tears pour down her face as she walked around the counter and wrapped her arms around Brad's waist. She gave him a quick peck on the cheek and ran out the front door.
