"Anxiety and demons are the monsters in my mind, but I can't let them take me under, I'm ready to fight from down below (fight from down below). I'm coming back for more."
Introduction: Resurrection, Andy Black
Diana noticed the confused and suspicious looks from Storybrooke's residents as soon as she stepped out from Draco's silver Chevrolet Malibu.
She guessed that perhaps the town wasn't used to newcomers, causing the excitement in her to deflate a little. She feared that Draco was wrong and that they might as well have just stayed in Great Britain.
"Ignore them." muttered her brother as he pressed a button on his car keys. The sedan's lights flashed, signalling that the car was now locked.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Diana asked her brother again as she looked down at the pavement, drawing invisible shapes on the ground with her white sandals.
She felt Draco's arm wrap itself around her neck as he pulled her close to him. He looked down at her with a smile full of nerves, signalling that his own confidence was also wavering.
"It's worth a try, and if it doesn't work out, we'll just have to find somewhere else. And you know as well as I do that neither of us have the desire to return to Britain with any urgency."
"Except to see Mum," added Diana, returning her brother's hug before they began walking down the streets together.
"Except to see Mum." Draco agreed as he held onto his sister tightly, knowing that they both needed each other right now. They were all the other had, as their remaining family and friends were now thousands of miles away.
They would have to brace the unknown of Storybrooke together.
Shortly after starting their walk throughout the town, the pair of siblings came across a seemingly cosy restaurant named Granny's Diner and Diana quietly asked her brother if they could get something to eat. It had been hours since she devoured that salted caramel donut from the Krispy Kreme shop they had pit stopped at.
"Sure," answered Draco, and the pair quickly made their way into the Diner. Diana was quickly distracted by the interior, which thankfully helped in ignoring the people who stared at them.
Leading Draco towards a window-seat booth, Diana takes a seat on the right side of the booth, the Diner's entrance in plain sight for her to keep an eye on. At the moment, she had her guard up as fear threatened to topple over her hunger.
Whilst Diana doesn't like people staring, that's all the residents of Storybrooke seemed to do.
"What are you having?" she asked her brother quietly as finally broke her eyes away from the door and picked up one of the menus which sat against the silver napkin dispenser and gazed over the daily options.
"Perhaps the hamburger with curly fries and an iced tea, I'm not feeling Gryffindor enough to try their version of fish and chips." Diana sent her brother a brief grin, feeling grateful for his honesty as it helped her to keep her mind distracted from the people around them.
"A school joke? Really?" she asked, and Draco shrugged, placing the menu down and leaning against the red leather seat.
"Good afternoon and welcome to Granny's, my name is Ruby and I shall be your server today. Are you both ready to order?" A tall girl dressed in a red uniform with long black hair and bright lipstick smiled kindly at the siblings, a notepad and ballpoint pen ready in her hands.
"Yes, thank you. I shall have the grilled cheese with a chocolate shake, and my brother here will have one of your hamburgers, with an iced tea please."
"Okay..." murmured Ruby as she wrote down their order, before asking Draco if he wanted any ketchup or mustard on his burger.
"Just ketchup, thank you." he answered and their waitress nodded in understanding before she smiled once again and told them that their food would be ready within fifteen to twenty minutes as everything was freshly cooked.
"Would you like some water or tea while you wait? It's on the house."
"Water for us both would be great, thank you." Diana smiled thankfully at Ruby and watched as she left to prepare them their complimentary drinks.
"I wanted tea," Draco pouted, causing his sister to roll her eyes.
"If you drink anymore tea, you'll look like a tea leaf." said Diana, taking their menus and placing them upright against the napkin dispenser again. "Besides, you ordered one with your meal, why not have something different whilst you're waiting?"
"Because it's water, I don't expect it to taste any different here from when I drank it back home." Draco's pointed face twisted into a displeased expression and Diana sighed, leaning further into her seat and ignoring her brother as she watched life pass them by outside of Granny's Diner.
Her mind drifted to what sort of magic the citizens of Storybrooke used and briefly considered whether or not she would have to place wards around their new home in case of any attacks provoked against them.
'Wow, paranoid much?' said Diana's subconscious, making the blonde haired girl feel silly for worrying so much over the matter. But, if these people were powerful, surely they would be able to sense hers and Draco's own abilities?
Was she really being silly, or was she just being careful from experience? The world's not a nice place, Muggle or Magical, so why should she assume that Storybrooke was all fairy lights and pumpkin-spice goodness without any hints of danger?
"I've been spending too much time around Harry," Diana murmured quietly and refrained from burying her head in her hands.
"I've been telling you that for years." Draco told his sister nonchalantly before thanking Ruby, who had just returned and set a tall glass of water in front of him before repeating the action with Diana.
"Thank you." Diana told her before taking a sip of her ice cold water, in hopes that it would make her feel refreshed after her sudden bout of worry.
"You know, I never asked for your names..." trailed Ruby, hoping that the siblings would answer her implicated question regarding their identities.
"I'm Draco, Draco Malfoy, and this is my younger sister Diana." Draco offered helpfully and Diana turned her tired smile onto her older brother, a large bout of thankfulness added to it.
"Nice to meet you both. So, what brings you to our small town?" Ruby asked, leisurely twirling around the tray she had used to carry their drinks over.
"We're just looking for a change of scenery; Britain was getting a bit tiring for us." Diana answered honestly before taking a sip of her water in hopes that it would refresh her.
"Oh, so it looks like I guessed your accents correctly!" Ruby grinned, and Draco chuckled lightly at her reaction.
"Yes, we travelled all the way from England and have decided to settle in Storybrooke for a while." he explained, ignorant to the dimming brightness in Ruby's eyes, which Diana noticed right away, but decided to keep the knowledge of it to herself.
"Oh..." Ruby's voice was quieter now, the remainder of the waitress' happiness now fully chased away and replaced with hesitance.
"Is something the matter?" asked Draco, knitting his eyebrows together as he finally noticed the lack of Ruby's enthusiasm.
"Well... It's just that the town doesn't usually attract visitors. We're a secluded community with families that have been here since the beginning of Storybrooke's founding, and I guess I just find it a little odd how you've managed to find us so easily it seems."
"Well, my brother here likes to do his research. Following several days worth of thinking, he decided that your little town was worth us moving to, so I hope you can forgive our sudden appearance," said Diana, watching as Ruby's lips parted slightly before the girl cleared her throat and plastered on a smile that looked rather fake compared to her previous ones.
"Well then–"
"Order up! I've got a grilled cheese, chocolate shake, hamburger with curly fries and an iced tea!" A plump lady with grey curls called from behind the counter across the room, pushing her wire-rimmed glasses that reminded Diana of her best friend.
Ruby turned around to stare at the woman and sighed, before turning to face the blonde siblings again with her smile turning a little more genuine.
"I suppose the best way to start your first day in Storybrooke is to experience the best food you'll ever eat in this town! I'll be right back with your food." she told them before sashaying towards the counter.
Diana watched as Ruby arrived at the counter and muttered something incoherent to the grey-haired lady behind it. Her eyebrows furrowed when she saw the grey-haired lady nod to Ruby before turning around to dial a number into the red telephone behind her. She spoke hurriedly into the receiver before swiftly ending the call and placing the receiver back to its designated place near the dialler before walking away, back to the kitchen perhaps.
A pit of uneasiness quickly swallowed Diana's appetite as she turned back around to chat with her brother. However, before she could tell Draco about what she had just witnessed, Ruby had returned with plates of food in both of her hands.
"Here you go, Granny's famous grilled cheese and my personal favourite, Granny's hamburger with fries. I'll be right back with your drinks."
"Thanks, Ruby." Diana shot the girl with a weak smile, no longer feeling hungry as her emotions had quickly been replaced by survival instincts and fear.
Draco, however, was already digging into his hamburger and drowning his curly fries in salt and vinegar.
"Thank you," said Draco after swallowing one of his curly fries, once the dark-haired girl had returned with their drinks.
"It's no problem, enjoy." replied Ruby, sending the pair another smile before she left them to their food.
Diana brightened slightly at the sight of her chocolate milkshake, displayed nicely in a tall parfait glass, topped with cream and chocolate shavings with a red and white straw to sip from.
"I'm beginning to think I should have gotten a milkshake myself." Draco told Diana, who shrugged and leant forward in her seat slightly to take a sample of her ice cold beverage.
The chocolate goodness quickly cheered her up, and followed by a few bites of her delicious grilled cheese sandwich, she decided to let what she had seen between Ruby and the grey-haired woman go.
Perhaps, she had just been overthinking it all. For all she knew, Ruby may have remembered something from a couple of days ago and decided to tell the woman, who decided to tell someone else. Their hushed conversation didn't necessarily mean it was about them.
'Yes, I've definitely been spending too much time around Harry.' Diana decided before she focused fully on her meal and had a nice conversation with her brother about how they didn't have food like this in Hogwarts, and that they definitely needed to purchase a new owl so that they could write to their mother and Aunt Andy about what they've experienced in America so far.
