"The rumours swirling around the ballroom about you are wild and varied tonight, Mr Barnes."
"Really, Ms Natalia? And what are they saying?"
"Some say you're too rich to care for such lowly company. Others wonder if your fortune was gained by nefarious means. Others still suspect you of the most debaucherous behaviour."
The smirk on her lips and choice of words combined made him swallow visibly hard.
"And what do you think?" he checked, unable to keep his own smile in check, as he moved her towards the dancefloor.
"I already know all I need to, sir," she said, flirtatious as ever, as they began to dance. "I know they are right about the riches. I also know your signet ring contains a healing stone, and I am patently aware that although you are in possession of two very fine arms," she told him, gripping onto the left one, "that has not always been the case."
He met her eyes as the dance ended, hand gripping her waist still.
"And knowing all this, what is your conclusion, madam?"
With the most dazzling smile, she gave her answer without hesitation. "That I am most fortunate to be your wife, sir."
