When morning rose, Aryll quickly got up and started preparing herself for the journey to Hateno Village. As she was strapping her sword to her back, she couldn't help but mutter the name to herself. It sounded so familiar, like a memory was almost tickling the edges of her mind, but whenever she got close it disappeared like it was never there. While she was frustrated, she didn't spend much time thinking about it. She would be going there soon anyway. If anything, perhaps being there physically would awaken a memory.
Stopping by the store across the way, Aryll grabbed some swift carrots and headed off. Going back the way she came, she noticed that Hestu the Korok had left like he said he would. His inventory upgrades were very useful. She would have to find him again so she could store more weapons and shields in her bag. Deciding she needed to go faster, she hopped up a little hill and pulled out her paraglider. Gliding was much faster and easier than just walking the whole way there. Crossing the decrepit Kakariko Bridge, she took the left path instead of heading to the stable that was down the other. A Sheikah Tower stood out in the distance, allowing her to mark it with her scope for the future.
Along her way, she had a large field with many Guardians strewn about. She felt like there was a pit in her stomach, and it wasn't being caused by the fact that some of those Guardians might still be active. She dispatched of a group of bokoblins before continuing0, making sure that she didn't wander to close to any of the mechanical creatures. Walking further along the road, she found herself standing in front of a ruined wall of stone with holes covered by sharpened wood. A man stood, admiring the wall and she couldn't help but ask what it was.
"Oh that is Fort Hateno!" the man, Garill, informed her enthusiastically, "This was the last line of defense between Hateno Vilalge and the awful tragedy that took place all those years ago,"
Had she been here before? Supposedly she had been alive during the tragedy and had fought. She felt a small shiver up her spine as she walked underneath the gateway. Looking at the slate revealed the time to be close to noon. She stopped by a cabin she spotted and consumed one of the many meals she had saved in her bag. As she was happily munching on a mushroom-steak skewer, a very cheery woman came up to her. There was a particular smell to her that she couldn't place.
"Hey there! You look like you know your way around a sword and a bow! Am I right?"
Aryll was a bit taken aback by the sudden question but answered, "Uh… yes?"
"Why don't you join the Yiga clan?"
She cocked her head, "Yiga clan? What's that?"
"Whaat? You don't know?" the woman was clearly shocked, "Okay then… The Yiga Clan is a powerful, brave group of warriors, founded by Master Kohga and dedicated to defeating a hero thought long dead!"
A maniacal grin stretched across her face, "As such, I will now be taking your life!"
The woman made a series of gestures with her hands, and suddenly her attire changed. She was now wearing a mask with the symbol of the Sheikah upside down and sported formfitting red clothes. A sickle was her weapon of choice as she charged at Aryll. The swordswoman quickly bounced back, able to get herself out of the way before the blade came down right where she was. Her weapons were still resting on a nearby stump, and the Yiga woman had put herself between them. Aryll reached into her bag and pulled out a broadsword just in time to block the next attack. She gritted her teeth as the assassin pushed, trying to sink their blade into her. Using the momentum, she slid the sickle off the tip of her sword and ran to grab her shield. Before she could get there, she saw the Yiga woman charging at her. At the very last moment, she flipped backwards away from the sickle. Time seemed to slow down as she did so, something that felt very unusual to her. However, she wasn't going to let this moment go to waste! She slashed the Yiga woman over and over. When time resumed, there were gashes all over their body. The woman keeled over, face down in the dirt. Blood seeped into the ground below her. It was at this moment that Aryll realized something. Unlike the malice born monsters, the Yiga woman's body didn't disappear in a puff of smoke. Aryll's stomach heaved at the sight.
…
It took her a while to gather herself. But she continued to push forward. Even if she did empty her stomach, eating now would only make things worse. Going further led to her getting ambushed several times by bokoblins that she quickly dealt with. After the fourth one, she found them more annoying than anything else. Passing through a wooded area, she saw a teenaged girl unconscious on the ground with a bokoblin dancing triumphantly above her. Aryll quickly drew her bow and dispatched the monster. Running over, she knelt and began checking the girl over. She breathed a sigh of relief when all she found was a bump on the head, likely just a concussion.
"Hey, are you alright?" Aryll asked as the woman came back to consciousness.
"I'm fine… Thank you stranger," the girl told her, "But I'd put up with worse for hearty truffles! I gotta get me those truffles!"
"Uh-uh!" Aryll moved to stop her, "You are going to rest now. A blow to the head is serious. Go see a doctor and get checked up,"
The girl sighed, "Alright fine… Name's Nat by the way,"
"Aryll. Do you live in Hateno?"
"Yep!" the girl nodded, "Me, my sister and Mama live there!"
"Alright. I'll escort you to the village. Don't want any more monsters jumping you and potentially killing you,"
Hateno Village was, thankfully, just up the hill. After dropping Nat off at her home, and receiving many thank-yous from her mother, she made her way to Myahm Agana Shrine and obtained the Spirit Orb from the Sheikah Monk. Upon exiting she remarked upon the… cube sectioned houses that stood out from the rest of the village. However, beyond that was a much older house than the rest of the ones in the village. Something in her heart leapt upon seeing it… and dropped when she saw someone with a sledgehammer next to it. She ran over to the person, "Hey!"
"Hm?" the worker looked at her.
"What are you doing?" her voice sounded desperate, but she didn't know why.
"Everyone in town agreed that we should just demolish this house. It's been abandoned for the longest time now," the worker told her, "Supposedly, the owners of the place went out for service and never returned,"
"How much?" Aryll asked.
"I'm sorry?"
Aryll realized she had been panting a bit and quickly collected herself, "How much for the house?"
The worker scratched his head, "I'm not into real estate, but you can talk to my boss if you wanna by it,"
"Where is he?"
"Around the back-"
Aryll was already off by the time he even finished his sentence. She rounded the back to see a man holding a book, seemingly inspecting the house and ordering the other workers. He wore a pink headband and an open blue coat.
"You the boss?" she asked.
"Why yes! I'm Bolson,"
"I want to buy this house," she told him.
The man sighed, "Listen sweetheart. The place has been abandoned for a long time. Nobody wants to live here so it's getting torn down. The demolition costs, with associated fees, and other such details… come in at fifty-thousand rupees. So, when you say you want to buy it, we're talking fifty-thousand rupees. You got that much on you?"
Aryll's heart sunk once again. She shook her head.
"Heh… Figured. I had money problems when I was your age too…" Bolson stared at Aryll for a moment before sighing again, "All right… Look,"
She raised her head.
"Here's the deal!" Bolson announced, "Just for you! I'll cut you a special price of three thousand rupees. But in return, you're going to need to bring me thirty wood bundles. Building materials… you know how it is. Those are the terms,"
Aryll grinned with determination, "I can definitely do that. I'll get you them as soon as I can!"
Without another word, Aryll raced off. She ran to the store that she had seen on her way there to get as many rupees as she could. Her bag was unfortunately empty of any monster parts, but she had enough money! Then, she ran back down the path that led to Hateno and started chopping away at the trees that resided there. By the time she was finished, she was soaked in sweat and dusk was approaching. Despite her fatigue, she ran back to the house to find Bolson.
"H-Here!" she panted as she reached into her bag and pulled out bundle after bundle of wood, then dumped her rupee pouch on the ground, "Thirty wood and three-thousand rupees!"
"My goodness! Did you just spend all day cutting down trees?!" Bolson almost shouted.
As she nodded, her vision began to blur. She heard Bolson and his crew shout something as she toppled to the ground. Oh right… she had chucked up her lunch and hadn't eaten anything since. No wonder she felt this way. Her eyes refused to stay open, and she drifted into unconsciousness…
…
Darkness surrounded her. She couldn't see anything, but she could hear voices. Two of them were children, without a doubt. The other one was more than likely an older man, gruff but jolly.
"Happy eighth birthday Aryll," said the older man's voice, "As promised, I made you your favorite,"
There was a dramatic pause before the man said with glee, "Pumpkin Stew!"
She could hear a young girl scream with glee, but it felt like it was coming out of her own mouth.
"Thank you, Papa! I love you so much!"
"Anything for you my little angel,"
"I…" a young boy's voice came from next to her, it was so quiet, she almost didn't notice, "I also made you something… hope you like it,"
There was a silence before she heard the girl say, "You… you made this?"
"I know it sucks, but-"
There was a taste on her tongue. Sugar and pumpkins with a bread-like crust. Pumpkin pie. It was the best thing she had ever tasted.
"Big brother this is amazing!" the girl shouted, "You're just as good as Papa! Maybe even better! I love it!"
There was a content sigh from the boy, "Happy birthday Aryll,"
"Thank you, big brother! You gotta teach me how to make this!"
…
Consciousness returned and with it, an ache. Her whole body was sore from all the strenuous activity she had been putting it through. Groggily, she opened her eyes to find herself in a room. She didn't recognize it, but the bed she was in was certainly comfortable. It looked to be a normal inn room. Sitting up made her head swim, but not as badly as before. She held her head a moment to steady herself before fully getting up. A growl of protest came from her stomach, but she kept moving. Opening the door, she saw that she was in fact in an inn and a strangely dressed man was talking with the person at the front desk. His head turned her way and he looked at her in shock.
He quickly ran over, "My dear, are you alright?"
"Ugh," another growl came from her stomach, "Yeah… sorry I'm really hungry,"
"Perfect timing then!" the man exclaimed, a bit too loud for her first thing in the morning, "Here, have an omlette, on me,"
He ran back to the desk and grabbed a plate of food that had been sitting there. She scarfed it down right then and there. The taste wasn't the best, but it was sustenance. After she finished, she pulled out a couple of apples from her bag and munched on them. She thanked whatever Korok magic kept food fresh, otherwise she would have starved long ago.
"Sorry, who are you?" she asked the man.
"My goodness!" the man gasped, "You were certainly out of it yesterday if you can't remember that. I am Bolson!"
She began to recall events from the day before. A vague memory of the man and his offer for the house that she bought came back.
"I bought a house from you… right?"
"Indeed! We also set you up with some basic furnishing to get you started," he told her.
"Well… thanks I guess,"
…
Her craze over the random house seemed to be over at least. She remembered what she had originally come to Hateno Village for and began making her way to the Ancient Tech Lab that resided on a plateau above the village itself. A sign she passed marked the paths that led to the Lab and the Hateno Pasture. She decided she would check out the pasture later. It seemed like a nice place to relax. More signs that lined the path to the lab included "NO SOLICITING" and "Enter at your own risk!"
"Can't say they don't take precautions. At least from being disturbed,"
Opening the doors to the lab, Aryll took notice of a few things. The first was that the entire place was a mess. Paper and books were spread haphazardly about. The second was that there was a child- an actual kid- standing on one of the chairs in this potentially dangerous environment. The child turned to her, eyes widening a moment before becoming calm again. She gazed at her behind large glasses that she adjusted before addressing her.
"Good evening," the girl said to her, "Are you here to see the director?"
"Yep," Aryll confirmed, "I was told by Impa to come here,"
"The director is in the back. Do try to keep it brief, they are extraordinarily busy,"
She looked behind the girl and noticed a man arranging books on the shelves. Thanking the child she walked over to the man.
"Hey there,"
"Oh hello!" the man greeted, "Terribly sorry, I've been trying to organize this collection of books. It's currently the largest one in Hyrule. Say…"
The man looked down at her hip, "Is that a real Sheikah Slate?!"
"Uh…" she was caught off guard by the man's sudden enthusiasm, "Yes?"
"Amazing!" he exclaimed, "I've never actually seen one in person before! If you could show me the runes on it, I'd be most appreciative!"
"Wait… you haven't seen it before?" Aryll tilted her head, "I was told by Impa that the Slate is missing some runes and that I need to see the director to get it fixed,"
"Well yes, Lady Impa did inform us of your eventual arrival. Didn't she director?"
The man was talking over her shoulder. But… the only one behind her was the child.
"Hang on. That child is the director?"
The child suddenly struck a pose, "Check it!"
Aryll wasn't sure what the pose was supposed to portray. It looked… weird.
"Yes! That is Ms. Purah!" the man confirmed, "She's the world's foremost authority on ancient Hyrule culture! She may look like a young girl, but… well, maybe it's not my place to say it,"
The name Purah felt familiar. It was like there was an itch in her mind and the word was trying to scratch it, but it couldn't find purchase and slipped right off. She turned to the supposed director.
"So…" Aryll looked down to Purah, "You're the director of the lab?"
The girl giggled, "Are you surprised?! The director wasn't Symin, but ME! Snappity snap!"
Aryll felt like her head was spinning. What the hell was happening to this world?
"Anyway, Aryll! Do you remember any dreams from your time in the Shrine of Resurrection? Despite all the scarring, you don't look like you've changed a bit in the last hundred years, but something must have happened! Right?!"
The way she was talking, it seemed as if this child had also known her back then, "I don't remember anything before waking up in the shrine,"
"Aww really? I can't believe you forgot me!" the child pouted, "I'm so shocked I don't think I'll ever recover from this!"
Aryll put a hand on her hip and raised a brow, "…Really?"
The girl took out a notebook from the bag on her back and began quickly writing things down, murmuring to herself as she did so. Aryll could have sworn she heard something about rudeness in there.
"You're a child. How could you have known me back then if you weren't even born?"
"HOW RUDE!" Purah shouted before muttering to herself in thought, "Actually that's a perfectly logical assumption,"
"So?"
The girl crossed her arms, "Truthfully, this is the result of a failed experiment. Well, not exactly 'failed', but it certainly didn't go the way I expected it to. I was supposed to return to my younger years, but not this young!"
"That's…" Aryll had to admit it, "Pretty impressive,"
Purah smiled, "Always appreciative of my work! That's Aryll for you!"
Then, she shook her head, "Back to the topic at hand! Here you are after a hundred years, aiming to defeat Calamity Ganon who has been steadily growing in power with every moment and rescue Princess Zelda! If you're brave enough that is. I, the one and only Purah, will restore the basic functions missing from the Sheikah Slate! What do you say to that?"
Aryll nodded, "It'd be much appreciated,"
"Alright!" the girl jumped and pumped a fist in the air, "First things first, I need you to run an errand for me,"
Aryll palmed her face.
"What's with that?! You didn't think I'd fix your slate for free, did you?"
"No. I seem to just attract people who need me to get things for them is all,"
"Still rude," Purah said as she noted that down again, "Let me explain. I need you to run down to the ancient furnace in town and fetch me some blue flames to light our own furnace. The Guidance Stone over there won't work unless you do it. Then we can fix your slate!"
"Okay. I'll be back," she told the director. Looking out at Hateno Village from the top of the hill, she could see the Ancient Furnace and its blue flame. With a smirk, she ran over to the edge of the path, jumped off, and began gliding down towards it. She grinned in triumph when she landed right next to it. The torch she carried lit up with the blue flames and she made her way back to the lab, lighting up the lampposts around town as she did so. The moment the flames lit the lab's furnace, the travel circle to her right lit up.
"[Hateno Ancient Tech Lab registered to map]"
"Purah!" Aryll called out as she entered the lab again, "I lit the furnace!"
"Great! The Guidance Stone is lit up and ready to go!" the girl told her, "Just slot it in and we can restore those Sheikah Slate runes for you! Now give me a nice SNAP! Go on! No time to be shy about it!"
Aryll was dumbfounded, "What?"
"Just do it!"
"Uh… Snap?" it sounded more like a question than an actual exclamation.
"Eh. Good enough," Purah shrugged, "Now let's do this thing!"
Aryll walked over to the Guidance Stone and placed the Slate into the slot.
"[Sheikah Slate authenticated. Camera, Hyrule Compendium, and missing files confirmed. Starting Repair.]"
A drop splashed onto the Slate and was absorbed. The glass changed so that it showed the runes. In the last square, a new symbol was added.
'Camera
Instantly render a visible image into a picture.
- Pictures created are saved in the album. It has a useful feature that connects to the Hyrule Compendium and automatically registers pictures of new entries.'
The glass switched to show rows of incredibly realistic pictures, the album, before switching again to show even more rows with unfilled squares separated into categories, the Hyrule Compendium.
"[Repair complete.]"
Aryll retrieved the Slate and handed it to Purah, "I think it's fixed?"
"Lessee here…" Purah began poking the Slate, "Camera, Hyrule Compendium, album… Yep, looks good!"
Aryll took the Slate back, "Thanks,"
"Wait," Purah quickly said, "I know this is sudden, but hear me out. Take a picture of me with the Camera! Oh, and don't forget to let me see it!"
"…Okay…"
Aryll poked the Camera rune and suddenly she could see through the Slate. The rune seemed similar to the scope, but at a much shorter distance. A square appeared in the middle of the screen. When she held it up to view Purah, it seemed to lock onto her a little. She clicked the button and the image on the screen froze. So that was how pictures were created… closing the Camera rune, she poked on the album symbol and poked the picture of Purah.
"Lemme see, lemme see!" Purah bounced with excitement. Aryll showed her the picture and Purah gasped.
"My, who IS this beautiful young creature?"
"Okay that's just weird,"
"Hush," Purah chided, "Ah, it's not just a pretty girl in these images. Yes, there are also some old landscape photos stored in the album. I know Princess Zelda had made frequent use of the Camera feature, but…"
She snapped her fingers, "Aryll! It just dawned on me that since your brother was Princess Zelda's appointed knight, and you often accompanied them, you might have been to some of the places where these pictures were taken!"
"In case you forgot, I can't remember anything from back then," Aryll reminded her.
"Hm…" Purah put a hand to her chin in thought, "Ah! These pictures might be the missing pieces needed to restore your lost memories! All you have to do is find where these pictures were taken! I suggest you check in with Impa. She knows more about Princess Zelda than even I do,"
Aryll noticed something, "You seem very familiar with Impa, considering you don't call her Lady Impa like every other Sheikah I've met,"
"Well, she is my little sister," Purah teased.
… Her mind decided it was a good time to leave. She stood there, just as dumbfounded as before, if not even more so. This little kid… was the older sister of the elderly woman she had met at Kakariko. She took a deep breath.
"I think I'm going to go now,"
On her way back down from the lab, Aryll saw the sign for the pasture again. Figuring now was as good a time as any, she made her way up the path to the pasture. Several animals were grazing as she passed through. She pet some of them as she passed before she wound up on a small hill that was the highest point in the pasture. Gazing out onto the horizon, she watched as the sun began to set. Something about this view was… familiar. She felt a shock throughout her body, like she had been struck by lightning, as something within her mind burst forth.
A group of cuccos is surrounding her. She pets them all one at a time, making sure they each get attention. Some of them rub against her, causing her to giggle as the feathers tickle her. She turns when she hears footsteps approaching her from behind.
"Hey Big Brother! What brings you here?"
He shrugged, "Been playing with the cuccos again? I swear those things are menaces,"
Aryll laughed at him, "You just don't know how to handle them correctly. You're too rough with them,"
He scoffed, "Say that again when they suddenly swarm and start pecking you,"
There's about four seconds of silence before the two of them are cracking up. He goes and sits down next to her. A cucco jumps up into his lap and he hesitantly begins to pet it. She decides to place one of the cuccos on his head and laughs as he cringes at the feeling. He slowly reaches up and grabs the very comfortable cucco off his head and places it on the ground next to him. She watches as he starts to gaze out into the distance. In her mind, she remarks how he keeps doing that almost every day now.
"Hey," concern begins to seep into her voice, "Is everything okay Link?"
He seems to snap out of a daze and looks right at her. One of his arms comes up to rub his face, "Yeah,"
They two of them sit in silence for what feels like an hour. The grass sways with the wind as they both stare out into the distance. A sigh escapes Link's mouth.
"Have you ever just wanted to run away from something, even though it's something that you have to do?"
Aryll nods, "Yeah… I mean… mostly chores and stuff… But I think I know what you're talking about,"
The two of them continue to stare off into the distance. Eventually, she breaks the silence, "Are you… scared?"
Link looks like he's about to crack a joke, but stops himself and his face becomes solemn, "Yeah… I am…"
Aryll scooches herself over and leans against the teenaged boy, "I'll be there,"
Link doesn't say anything back and just smiles down at her. He holds her close as the two of them gaze at the castle in the distance, neither of them saying a word for the rest of the time they sat there.
The memory is so strong she can't help but recoil. She remembered… Not everything but she remembered. She was here, one-hundred years ago. She lived in this very village; in that house she had gone manic for when she had seen it was about to be torn down. Link, her brother. She remembered some things about him. How whenever he was with other people, he would often keep himself quiet, but whenever it was just the two of them, he was as loud as anyone else. She remembered the incident where he had been chased all throughout town by angry cuccos until she was able to calm them down and collect them. She loved the animals of the village and cherished every single one of them.
One thing that stood out the most was how much she loved her brother. The love she felt for him in that memory was such a strong familial love. It was the most vivid thing about it. She remembered how she didn't want him to be alone, that she wanted to help shoulder some of his burden. It didn't matter what he did, or where he was going, she was going to make sure that he was okay because no one else could.
"I gotta talk to Impa," she decided. She pulled out the Slate and selected the shrine that was in Kakariko Village. One slightly sickening trip later, she was walking into Impa's house.
"Hm. I heard Purah was giving you the run around, but you seem just fine," Impa joked as she approached.
"I remembered something,"
Impa's eyes widened, "Go on,"
Aryll recounted how she had left the lab and wandered out onto the pasture and about the strong memory she experienced.
"I see…" Impa nodded, "I should have expected such, considering Hateno Village was you and your brother's home,"
"Purah was saying that if I traveled to the locations where the pictures in the album were taken, I might be able to remember more," she told the elder.
Impa nodded again, "If that is possible, do return once you have found at least one of these locations. I have something I wish to give you,"
"Thanks a bunch!" Aryll said appreciatively as she walked out of the house. She brought out the Slate and selected the shrine next to her newly purchased house. The moment she landed she felt extremely nauseous. She leaned next to a tree and proceeded to empty the contents of her stomach on the ground.
"So much for… taking care of myself," she said as she wiped her mouth with her sleeve.
