Author's Notes: Y'all are just juicing me with these snippets. XD Thank you NiagaraLucas and clumsybubbles for supporting this short story. I hope you enjoyed the main plot in the first 12 chapters. Everything else has been bonus chapters and "clips" for new supporters much like you. ;-D Doesn't look like I'll get those three reviews I'm looking for to expand this story anytime soon, so we stick to snippets. *looks through list of clips* I think... I'll pick the one with Nesi modifying Ace's diet this time. If I get more supporters, I'll do the one where the Spades set up Ace and Nesi for a dinner date while he's in the captain's coat. Both are funny. It's just the latter leads up to the accidental marriage episode.
~ ... Balance of Six Tastes ... ~
Snore.
"Oi! Captain, you fell asleep again!" Cuatro yelped, amazed that Ace could do so in record speeds.
"Huh?" Ace responded, blinking himself awake for a moment.
Nesi was out shopping for breads when she heard the commotion from a local pub in town. Ace and some the boys decided to eat outside while Deuce and the other boys decided to pick up women for drinks and company. Nesi wanted nothing to do with either of those things, so she instead left to perform shopping duties. Since Ace refused to let anyone touch the money in the treasury, Nesi was stuck emptying her portion of earnings as the Spades' floor scrubber. Spoiler alert: it wasn't much. Nevertheless, she focused on the necessities and looked into ways to store food better. A lumber shop was just along the edge of town. She could visit it for storage options. Right as she was inspecting a few blocks of cheese, someone had bumped into her. She turned around to see a fairly tall, greasy-looking bounty hunter. He was smiling at her.
"You're definitely new 'round here, cutie," the bounty hunter complimented. "What's your name?"
"Squaw!" Baragon cheered from Nesi's shoulder.
She smiled, cuddled her rosy companion, and replied, "I guess squaw for today."
"You must be thinking about making me a sandwich. That's a lot of food for one girl. How's about it, cutie? I take you out, you make me a fully loaded munchie?" the bounty hunter asked, stooping down to Nesi's eye level with his hands in his pockets.
"Unfortunately, this isn't just for me. I'm shopping for a house full of boys. Bit of a mess 'round dinner time," Nesi admitted, grumbling and chuckling at her crewmates' eating frenzies. She then took notice to a paper sticking out of the man's coat and asked, "That looks like a bounty paper, though. Do you hunt often?"
"I do it to protect pretties like you," the hunter said, creeping closer to Nesi. "If I catch this guy on my roster, do I get a reward for the night?"
"I suppose so. A sandwich doesn't really equate to the money you earn, though," Nesi replied, shrugging her shoulders. She then nodded to the paper, "Who's your target? Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't get your name."
"Cosat Galasplash," he responded, standing straight to take out his bounty paper.
He smiled creepily with the promise of bedding Nesi later and getting a high-quality sandwich afterwards. He watched her pick out her breads and cheeses for a while now. She knew what good product was and what wasn't. He flipped out his paper, though, and Nesi had to fight not to laugh. She remained calm as she looked at Ace's smiling face being covered by his hat on the paper. Shoot, the amount of belly he was worth could fill the Bloody Doubloon with all kinds of food! She hummed with thought, smirked, and then nodded.
"Very well," Nesi replied, smiling brightly. "If you can catch this Firefist fellow, I'll cook a meal for you and whoever you wish to invite as a celebration for your hard, dangerous work. I'll shop for some wines while I'm at it. If there's a ladies' boutique, I'll even wear whatever you like. Deal, Mr. Galasplash?"
"You know something I don't, little girl?" Cosat asked, stooping down to Nesi's level again.
"Only that Firefist is over there," Nesi replied, pointing to the pub that Ace and the Spades were eating in. "Make sure you don't hurt the ladies over there. I may invite a few for the party if you succeed. After all, I work best with company!"
Cosat's nose bled a little at the idea of having more than one woman serving him. Nesi merely watched him wobble over to the pub with a dreamy look on his face. She continued her shopping while the bounty hunter challenged Ace to a fight...
Nesi did as promised. She made a meal to celebrate the victory in town... Galasplash was robbed naked and Ace was blushing at the amount of food stacked on the kitchen table. A few girls did come aboard the ship, but Nesi didn't mind. One of the fruit vendors offered her a room for the night if anything... "popped off" on the Bloody Doubloon. She packed her clothes and studies for the room. Baragon also packed a basket of his own goodies. Ace had fallen asleep mid-chew on some food, which alerted the floor scrubber's attention, and she watched as the crewmates and young ladies panicked. Nesi had started to wonder about her captain's eating habits. That wasn't just him being greedy. There had to be more to the story than that.
Walking over to the snoring captain, Nesi pulled a chicken leg out of his mouth and woke him up. Staring into the boyish charm of a face, she smiled, took her apron into her hand, doused a corner of it into a small cup of water, and cleaned his face quietly. Ace froze up at the attention she was giving him and stiffened up. When Nesi was satisfied with her work, she turned to the food and hummed with thought. Thinking of something, she snapped her fingers and hustled to cook something else. Ace and some of the boys just watched her modify some of the dishes. Before long, she took Ace's portions of food and cut them into smaller portions with rice and gravy to provide more filling. Even his ale was mixed into a cocktail to reduce the side effects of the alcohol. Ace was about to protest when Nesi pushed the food away from him, but she quickly took a spoon and shoved food into his mouth. She waited, watched him chew, and smiled warmly when... he stayed awake!
"That's what it is! You're eating too much at once!" Nesi claimed, hustling over to the bread and cutting a loaf into smaller slices with butter and garlic spread. She offered the slice to Ace, who blushed at her trying to feed him, and then dipped it into the gravy so that he would be more enthusiastic in eating it. Ace took the slice and ripped into it before gasping lightly at Nesi's reaction. Why was she so happy? Nesi continued, "Your body can't process that much food at once. It puts you to sleep to quickly to get the energy you need to digest all of this! That's why you wake up almost in a daze before you snap out of it!"
"What're you talking about, scrubbing bubble?" Ace questioned, growling a bit.
"Someone must've trained you to eat like that," Nesi said, humming to herself to think. "You eat as though you don't know when your next meal will be despite having enough food to last for several days."
Right then, Ace immediately thought of Garp and his lessons about surviving and eating large portions to endure many days without sustenance. He didn't say anything about it, but he did look at Nesi's plate and the smaller amount of food that was on it. Almost out of spite, he chomped into a big hunk of meat then rubbed his face in her apron to dirty it, but she merely chuckled and nodded. Promising to only serve him the amount of food his body can take, she chopped up smaller bits of food for her own dinner and something for Baragon. She ate at her corner table with the lizard and poured a small cup of wine for herself. One of the girls walked over to her out of curiosity to see what she was eating since it smelled different and looked different. Nesi offered her some of her charcuterie snacks and smiled when the girl blushed at the flavors mixing together. She even squealed!
When dinner was practically over, Nesi took some of the uneaten foods and packed them into boxes. She was startled by a finger swiping her spine, "Eek!"
"Where're you headed off to?" Ace questioned, folding his arms.
"Huh?" Nesi answered. "Oh, it's you. To the fruit vendor's shop. I got a room for the night."
"Who said you could sleep at the local inn?" Ace questioned, raising a left brow.
"I'm not particularly interested in staying on the ship with giggling girls and eager boys frolicking about. Ale is a pretty convincing tonic," Nesi emphasized, widening her eyes at the horrors of drunkenness and sexually mature bodies.
"Isn't wine just as bad?" Ace asked, lowering his head to question him. "It's a slow kicker."
"That's why I prefer it!" Nesi replied, smiling brightly. "Goes great with cheese and cutlets!"
"I don't see what you're on about. None of the boys are doing anything right now. You can sleep through it, can't you?" Ace questioned.
"Unfortunately, I cannot," Nesi replied, aura turning black from the mere thought of staying on pheromone-fueled ship with no escape. "It's just for the night, though. I'll come back in time to clean things. Promise!"
Ace let out a big sigh, dropped his head, and threw his arms in the air to walk ahead of her. Nesi forgot that Ace could be a gentleman sometimes despite his bouts of childishness, but she followed behind him until she noticed that he was walking in sync with her as they spoke about things. When they were reunited with the fruit vendor, the old farmer blushed and looked to his wife in question.
"Oh, I didn't realize you had a man, Miss Nesi," the woman said, blushing a bit.
Nesi let out a laugh before saying, "Pfft! He's not my man, old mum! This is Captain Ace of the Spades crew. The young man I shop for. I'm his bookkeeper and floor scrubber."
"Well, you've quite the young lady with you, Captain Ace!" the old man said. "It's rare to find a young lady with her tastes in foods, especially one who's not a noble or high-class patron. Are you staying here for the night as well? We have two beds in the same room. It's the least we can do for her help earlier today. You must've taught this young lady how to fight. She was extraordinary!"
"I want to be as strong as my captain someday!" Nesi declared, lifting up a determined fist. "I won't get there without practice!"
The old couple laughed, escorted them both inside, and gave them a tour of the temporary grocer's shop. Nesi was quite happy to hop in her bed with Baragon. Ace almost forgot she was bald with her headscarf styled into a high ponytail. It suit her pajama set quite well. Inspecting all the locks and windows before bed, Nesi and Baragon made sure the old couple was fine before drifting off to sleep. Ace did a final patrol before he heard the old couple canoodling upstairs on the balcony. He laughed when they started kissing.
"Should've stayed on the ship," Ace said, rolling his eyes at the situation with a smile. "Guess that's karma for setting me up for a fight with a bounty hunter."
