The show doesn't say much about Mordred's past so this is my take on his childhood and why he doesn't speak aloud. Companion piece to "Contrary to Popular Belief" but can stand alone.

Merlin stared back at Arthur, confusion and a little bit of fear clouding his face, before whispering, "Who are you?" And just like that Arthur's heart dropped straight out of his chest.
