Chapter one:

"Stupid vampires. At least this orphanage is clean of them."

Outside...

Two figures stand before a building looking up at it.

"So... It is here..." One brings up to which the other nods in confirmation.

"This is the place. His majesty should be hiding himself within."

"Then let's go." The two begin to approach the building.

…A year later…

Mello glances to Near who is sitting with Beyond and A, also known as Always, sitting on either side of him.

They got these seats in basically every class.

Mello could almost swear that it is as if Beyond and Always are protecting Near himself. He grumbles to himself quietly as he turns away to focus on his note taking. He is in fourth all because the other three have taken the top three places in this orphanage. He glances to Matt who is sitting beside him. He notices the other glance to the three before turning back to his game that he is quietly playing. He grabs his stuff as the bell rings to indicate that it is the end of class.

Matt gets up then waits for the blonde to which the two head off together.

"Hey. Wanna go into town tonight?" Mello offers a little quietly to the red head.

"Can't. Full moon gaming night." Matt whispers back to which Mello can't believe he forgot about that.

The full moon is the only nights that Matt cannot just hang out with the other. He gets busy every time it comes around.

"Oh. Right." Mello lets the other head off while he heads into his room. He throws his school books onto the desk in his room. He flips down onto the bed with a sigh. He tries to decide what he is going to do. He decides that he'll go for a walk. He makes sure his bed has a secret pillow put to make it seem like he's asleep. He heads out of the orphanage grounds and begins a wander. He stays out even as it becomes late since he knows that he'll just be thought of as sleeping. He looks around as the night air feels wonderfully cool on his skin. As he walks along the quiet streets he starts to get the unnerving feeling that someone is following him. He stops walking to look around only to not spot anyone. He keeps going keeping himself on edge as he waits for any sign of his follower attempting to approach.

A sudden hiss behind the blonde orphan makes the air around become even more tense.

Mello starts to turn only to be suddenly tackled by a figure that effortlessly overpowers him.

"You'll make a tasty snack." The feeling of a pair of sharp teeth brush against Mello's neck. He doesn't even seem to notice the others struggles to try to get free. "Hush. It will be over soon enough. I can't stay long. Not in this territory."

Mello swears that he sees whoever this has glowing red eyes and the other opens his mouth wide. He can't escape and he swears that it looks like the other has vampire like fangs! He can't get a proper look as the angle is all wrong so maybe he is imagining it.

Before those teeth can sink into his flesh there is a flash of something white tackling the figure off of Mello.

Mello shifts to turn seeing two tumble into an alleyway where they disappear from sight.

There is a series of hisses almost like the two are communicating before hurried footsteps hurry away.

Mello waits as things fall to silence. He finally manages to recover from his shock enough to stand up. He is about to investigate however his eyes meet with a pair of glowing red eyes in the darkness of the alleyway. He hears a command in his head in a familiar voice that he can't quiet place.

Run.

Mello doesn't even think twice and he turns running off until he finds himself running for the direction of the orphanage. He hurriedly sneaks back inside and goes under his covers. He tries to comprehend what had just happened. He just can't believe that was even real. He starts to wonder if maybe he was attacked and saved by someone else, but in his shock of almost dying he imagined it as differently than it happened. He thinks that it is the only explanation for what happened.

Vampires aren't real… Right?

Mello knows he isn't getting much sleep tonight.

The next morning…

Mello is wandering early in the morning and he pauses as he hears some voices coming from the common room. He knows that no one else should be awake yet so this really gets him curious. He moves closer to the entryway to try to hear it better. He finds himself surprised by the voice that speaks.

"I'll do an extra patrol to make sure that he has indeed left. If not I'll chase him off. We can't have someone like that hanging around." Matt tells someone only for Near to hum in agreement.

"I did warn him off so if he doesn't listen and he tries to complain about you chasing him off then I will tell him that he got what he deserved. That he should have listened to me in the first place." Near adds in response to Matt's own words that he had spoken.

"We will help with the patrol. The city is big and it'll take forever for you to patrol the territory all alone." BB adds and there is a brief silence before Near makes an approving sound to the idea.

"We'll split the city up between the three of us then." Matt sounds glad that a plan has been put into place. "And Near will stay here to make sure the orphanage grounds are kept safe from any attack."

"Watch it." BB suddenly growls aggressively. "Someone like you doesn't get to order him around."

"Back down." Near lightly hisses in a commanding tone to which the other goes quiet. "We will work together on this. The territory is shared and like it or not but we have to work together to keep it safe."

"As you wish." BB responds though clearly isn't too happy about it.

"Alright. Then let us pretend that everything is normal." Near adds still sounding with an authority tone.

Mello moves away from there and sits in the currently empty cafeteria, though the kitchen staff will be waking up soon, to sit there trying to figure out what he just heard. He then remembers the attack the night before. He can recall the flash of white as someone saved him… Surely the two things can't be connected… Yet evidence is pointing to that being the case… Leaving Mello with no idea what to do. He isn't even fully sure what he has just stumbled into.
